Sleep is essential for good health, but new research suggests that many older adults aren't getting enough of it. A study found that people 50 and older who slept five hours or less at night had a greater risk of developing multiple chronic diseases as they age compared with peers who got a longer night's rest.VISIT OUR STOREStore: https://www.selfelements.comFOLLOW USwww.selfprinciple.orgwww. youtube.com/selfprinciplewww.youtube.com/plantbasedkidneyhealthwww.instagram.com/seanhashmimd

What's the link between splenda, stevia, blood sugars and our gut microbiome?

Artificial sweeteners have been around for decades, but lately, there is a lot of controversy surrounding their safety. In this video, we will discuss artificial sweeteners and their effect on the microbiome. The gut microbiome is one of the most important parts of our body, and a lot of research is being carried out to understand its role in a number of health conditions. Some people claim that non-nutritive sweeteners, such as aspartame, sucralose, stevia, and saccharin can alter gut microbiome and increase blood glucose and insulin levels. This may be one reason why people who consume artificial sweeteners are more prone to obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic health issues. We will also discuss Saccharin which is the oldest of all non-nutritive sweeteners and the one that has been around for the longest time.Reference: Suez J, Cohen Y, Valdés-Mas R, Mor U, Dori-Bachash M, Federici S, Zmora N, Leshem A, Heinemann M, Linevsky R, Zur M, Ben-Zeev Brik R, Bukimer A, Eliyahu-Miller S, Metz A, Fischbein R, Sharov O, Malitsky S, Itkin M, Stettner N, Harmelin A, Shapiro H, Stein-Thoeringer CK, Segal E, Elinav E. What is the link between cocoa flavanols and brain health?

It is well known that cocoa flavanols can improve cognitive function and blood flow in older patients. This new study shows that cocoa flavanols can improve cognitive function and blood flow in healthy young adults. This is the first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the acute cognitive and cerebral blood flow effects of flavanol-rich cocoa in young, healthy adults. "Our findings demonstrate that the daily intake of cocoa flavanols for two weeks is sufficient to improve the cognitive performance and increase cerebral blood flow in young adults," according to the researchers. "Therefore, our data suggest that daily intake of a cocoa flavanol-containing drink over a longer time period may improve cognitive function in healthy individuals."Reference: Gratton, G., Weaver, S.R., Burley, C.V. et al.
