In 1879, a chemist named Constantin Fahlberg sat down to dinner without washing his hands after a day spent handling coal tar. His bread tasted strangely sweet. So he went back to the lab and started tasting everything on his bench until he found the source. That was saccharin, the first artificial sweetener, discovered because a man would not wash his hands before dinner. Nearly 150 years later, we are still arguing about whether the stuff is going to kill us.This week, Zoë and Kylee dig into the question every diet-soda lover has had to defend at a gas station: are artificial sweeteners actually bad for you? They trace how a coal-tar accident became a billion-dollar industry, why the WHO's "possibly carcinogenic" label on aspartame puts it in the same risk tier as pickled vegetables and working as a carpenter, and how Donald Rumsfeld personally muscled aspartame through the FDA. The saccharin cancer scare that haunted a generation came from male rats dosed with the equivalent of hundreds of sodas a day, through a mechanism human bodies do not even have.Along the way: the wartime rationing that built the sweetener industry, the cyclamate the US banned and never reinstated while the rest of the world kept drinking it, the every-fifteen-years villain cycle that has run through fat, high-fructose corn syrup, gluten, and seed oils, the genuinely fascinating Suez microbiome research where scientists grew human gut bacteria in mice, the stevia-in-a-petri-dish problem, and the erythritol heart-attack headline that fell apart the moment anyone read the study.Plus: why these things were always sold to women as a permission structure, the one category athletes actually need to watch (sugar alcohols, and the osmotic chaos they bring to a long run), the client drinking ten Liquid IVs a day, and a hot-takes round that settles Diet Coke versus Coke Zero once and for all.Listen for the full story. This episode is brought to you by:rabbit: Built by runners, for runners. Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses a listener question about whether agave nectar can contribute to obesity like high-fructose corn syrup, arguing that regular use of sweeteners—including agave, honey, monk fruit, stevia, aspartame, sucralose, allulose, and sugar alcohols—can maintain sweet cravings, spike insulin, and contribute to weight-loss plateaus, with added concerns such as microbiome effects, GI upset, and aspartame's neurotoxicity. She notes insulin's role in fat storage and blood pressure via sodium retention, and suggests that needing a sweetener in coffee or tea may indicate dependence on sweetness. She then covers a newly developed, validated Food Noise Questionnaire (FNQ) published in Obesity to measure intrusive food-related rumination, highlighting its five Likert-scale items, study sample characteristics, and the need for further research, including effects of GLP-1 drugs.

Are artificial sweeteners helping us age well—or quietly working against our brain health? In this episode of The Aging Well Podcast, Jeff and Corbin unpack new research linking popular sugar substitutes to accelerated cognitive decline. While artificial sweeteners are often marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar, emerging evidence suggests the story may be more complex—especially for midlife and older adults concerned about dementia risk.Together, they explore the science behind the study, the broader metabolic and neurological implications of artificial sweeteners, and whether “natural” alternatives like honey, maple syrup, or stevia truly offer an advantage. This episode offers a balanced, science-based discussion to help listeners make informed decisions about sweeteners and long-term brain health.Article links:https://scitechdaily.com/popular-sugar-substitutes-linked-to-faster-cognitive-decline/https://www.neurology.org/doi/10.1212/WNL.0000000000214023Please, support The Aging Well Podcast by hitting the ‘like' button, subscribing/following the podcast, sharing with a friend, and….Tip Jar! According to David Gillespie, artificial and "sugar-free" sweeteners are not the harmless alternatives we've been led to believe they are. Of course you’re not surprised. In fact, they're really sh*t. Scientifically speaking. Apparently, they hijack the brain's expectation of energy, leading to increased hunger and overeating, and may also disrupt gut health and metabolism. More recent compounds - like sugar alcohols and "keto" sweeteners - are framed as potentially more dangerous, with emerging research suggesting links to blood clots and cardiovascular risk. The core message in this episode is that there's no "free lunch" in biology - sweetness without energy comes with consequences. Which is personally very annoying, 'cause I inhale that sh*t. Sorry to disappoint you. I’ll try harder.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Charles Zuker, PhD, a professor of biochemistry, molecular biophysics and neuroscience at Columbia University and an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We explore taste perception and how the brain transforms chemical signals from food into distinct taste experiences. We discuss how these taste signals shape both conscious choices and unconscious behavior, as well as how food preferences can change over time. Additionally, we discuss gut–brain signaling and explain why sugar is especially powerful at driving cravings. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about zero-calorie drinks and whether they are really the guilt-free option we have been led to believe. A well-known Copenhagen study compared four groups of people who drank a liter a day of regular soda, diet soda, milk, or water for six months, and the results were surprising enough to stop anyone mid-sip. Could a beverage with absolutely no calories still be working against your blood sugar, waistline and your metabolism? What do your gut, your pancreas, and even your taste buds have to do with it? Jenn digs into the science, questions the study's details, and shares what she has seen play out in real life with herself and her clients for years. But before you toss your diet soda or defend it to the end, you should hear what Jenn has to say about who this affects, why, and whether the calorie count on the label is telling you anywhere near the whole story. Non-sugar sweeteners are neither miracle cures for obesity nor hidden health threats. Recent evidence shows they can modestly support weight loss, help reduce sugar intake and fit safely into a balanced diet. The "uncomfortable truth" is clear: these sweeteners are context-dependent tools, not standalone solutions. Over-relying on them or ignoring overall eating patterns won't deliver big results. Let's take a closer look.
Sugar isn't sinful. Artificial sweeteners aren't automatically better. But confusion around both is keeping many women stuck—especially in midlife. In this episode, we're having an honest, science-based conversation about sugar, insulin, and artificial sweeteners, and how your body actually responds to sweetness. This isn't about shame, restriction, or cutting everything out forever. It's about understanding the biology God designed so you can change habits with clarity instead of guilt. We'll talk about why fat loss feels harder in perimenopause, how insulin controls fat storage, why “sugar-free” foods can still stall progress, and how artificial sweeteners affect your brain, gut, hormones, and cravings. You'll also hear practical, realistic ways to reduce sugar and sweetness without extremes. In this episode, we cover:What sugar actually is and how it affects blood sugarThe role of insulin as a storage hormoneWhy chronically elevated insulin blocks fat lossWhy midlife women are more insulin-sensitiveHow artificial sweeteners signal the body like sugarWhy “calorie-free” doesn't mean metabolically neutralThe impact of artificial sweeteners on cravings, brain, and gut healthCalories vs metabolic signalsBiblical wisdom on self-control and stewardshipPractical ways to reduce sugar and artificial sweeteners sustainablyKey Scriptures Mentioned:1 Corinthians 10:23Proverbs 25:28Galatians 5:22–23Key Takeaway:You don't need to quit sugar forever. You don't need “sugar-free” everything. When you understand how your body responds to sweetness, you're free to make wiser choices without fear or guilt.Reflection Question:Where might clarity about how your body works help you release shame and build healthier habits?

Unmasking Hidden Sugars in 'Healthy' Drinks: Leyla Muedin, a registered dietitian nutritionist, examines the surprising amounts of sugar found in commonly perceived 'healthy' drinks. She discusses how beverages like energy drinks, fruit smoothies, and chai lattes can exceed the daily recommended sugar intake, based on a study by Ben's Natural Health. Leyla warns that even health-focused products and homemade drinks can contain high sugar levels, which can impact weight, blood sugar levels, and overall health. She emphasizes the importance of being an 'ingredient sleuth' and making informed choices.
In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Justin Sonnenburg, PhD, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University. We discuss how microbes in our gut impact our mental and physical health and how diet and the environment affect the gut microbiome. Today we're diving into the world of artificial sweeteners. Back in July 1982, Coca-Cola launched a groundbreaking new product: Diet Coke. A healthier alternative for those Coke fans looking to cut back on sugar and manage their weight. Sounds great, right? Well, maybe not. You see Diet Coke, and many other low sugar drinks, rely on artificial sweeteners. And while they were once seen as a smart swap, emerging research is raising serious concerns about their long-term effect on our health. In this episode, I'm joined by Professor Eran Elinav and Professor Tim Spector to break down the latest science and explore how these sweeteners impact our gut microbiome.
Send us a textIn this episode of Causes or Cures, Dr. Eeks talks with Dr. Claudia Suemoto in Brazil about her new 8-year study looking at whether artificial sweeteners are linked to changes in thinking and memory. We cover: • How she started studying dementia and why she became curious about sweeteners. • What the research team hoped to learn and what they actually found. • Why these results are different from older, one-time “snapshot” studies. • Why the link between sweeteners and thinking problems showed up in people under 60, but not over 60. • The seven sweeteners they studied and whether any looked more concerning than others. • What a small decline on a cognition test really means in everyday life. • Whether people who switch to sweeteners because of health issues make sweeteners look guilty. • Whether there seems to be a “safe range” or if more sweetener means more risk. • How to use studies like this when they show association, not proof. • Easy ways to cut back on sweeteners without doubling your sugar. • What policies she thinks make sense while we wait for more data. • Her top tips for protecting your brain and lowering dementia risk.If you want a clear, calm, evidence-based take on sweeteners and brain health, this episode is for you.Guest Bio: Claudia Suemoto, MD, PhD, is a geriatrician and researcher at the University of São Paulo whose work centers on successful brain aging, dementia, and the cardiovascular risks that shape both. Join Dr. Pinkston and returning favorite guest, Dr. Carolyn Dean, as they tackle the great confusion surrounding sugar and its profound impact on your health. In this illuminating discussion, you'll learn: The Sugar-Heart Disease Connection: Discover the suppressed history of how the sugar industry successfully blamed fat for heart disease and the critical role of Vitamin C in preventing arterial damage. The Magnesium Link: Understand the biochemistry of how sugar metabolism depletes your body's essential magnesium stores and its direct connection to ATP energy production. Collagen & Scurvy: Hear how high sugar intake bumps off Vitamin C, which is vital for collagen production, potentially leading to weakened blood vessels (scurvy) and the mechanism of arterial plaque formation. The Addiction and Cravings Cycle: Explore why sugar is highly addictive, the role of yeast overgrowth (Candida) in cravings, and how nutrient depletion drives excessive eating. Artificial Sweeteners & Toxicity: Dr. Dean explains the dangers of many synthetic sweeteners, including how they break down into toxic compounds, and offers safer alternatives like Stevia and monk fruit. Peripheral Neuropathy Explained: Learn the fascinating (and terrifying) mechanism by which excess sugar transforms into sorbitol, which builds up inside cells and can lead to nerve damage. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the science behind sugar's toxicity and how an integrative approach—focusing on critical nutrients like Magnesium and Vitamin C—can help you achieve the "Better Life."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Artificial sweeteners are linked to faster memory loss and thinking decline, equal to 1.6 years of extra brain aging People under 60 who consume the most low or no-calorie sweeteners face the steepest drop in verbal fluency and overall cognition, making midlife a key time to cut them out Adults with diabetes are at even higher risk, with sharper declines in memory and global thinking skills when relying on artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes The harmful effects were consistent across years of testing, showing that continued use steadily chips away at brain function You can protect your brain by eliminating artificial sweeteners, using natural options like fruit, honey, monk fruit, and dextrose, and focusing on foods that fuel steady energy

In today's episode, we're talking about bacteria and the impact artificial sweeteners can have on your gut health. Did you know that you've got more bacterial cells in your body than human cells? Bacteria are the biggest part of what makes us uniquely human. You are a walking bacterial super-organism. Artificial sweeteners—like sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin—aren't neutral because they have no caloric value as so many love to postulate. A study published in the Journal of Nature in 2014 revealed that the altered bacterial balance brought on by ingesting artificial sweeteners triggered glucose intolerance—basically, Splenda or Ace K lay the ground work for diabetes in the future. Artificial sweeteners shift the gut away from butyrate-producing species (our favorite short chain fatty acid) and toward inflammatory ones. This is essential to understand because how those bacteria are balanced decides how our mind and body manifest in life. ➡️Download 16 Delicious Goat Whey Recipes https://drwholeness.ac-page.com/goat-whey -------- Connect with Dr. Matt online:

In this episode, we're talking about how diet culture shows up in diabetes care and how it can actually make things worse. We're joined by Janice Dada, a weight-inclusive diabetes expert, Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian, and author of the upcoming book Intuitive Eating for Diabetes: The No Shame, No Blame, Non-Diet Approach to Managing Your Blood Sugar Janice shares how food fear, rigid nutrition advice, and weight-focused care can lead to disordered eating and make blood sugar management harder, not easier! We talk about how to recognize the ways diet culture shows up in care, why shifting away from shame-based approaches matters, and how it's possible to support blood sugar while still honoring your relationship with food and your body. Whether you live with diabetes or support folks who do, we hope this conversation offers validation, clarity, and a more compassionate approach to diabetes.Resources mentioned in episode: Artificial Sweeteners: https://diabetesdigital.co/artificial-sweeteners-and-diabetes/ New Intuitive Eating Scale: https://www.instagram.com/evelyntribole/p/C8xDjMPpBvo/?img_index=1If you're living with diabetes or prediabetes and want personalized support from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist covered by insurance, visit diabetesdigital.co to connect with our culturally aware and weight-inclusive team.
