Hey there! We’re Luna and Shannon - licensed psychotherapists in private practice who also happen to love tarot. Each episode we work to demystify tarot and explore its connections to mental and emotional health while implementing its inherently helpful tools to better understand ourselves and those around us. Join us as we unravel common struggles related to our behavior, thought patterns, emotions, and relationships while pulling cards to facilitate growth and to help create the life and relationships we all desire.
This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I invite you to step away from your Eight of Pentacles bench of productivity and join me on the stone slab with the Four of Swords - a card I kept circling back to while creating a workshop on the architecture of stability. After pulling the Eight of Pentacles (yet again) I realized this card that's been following me around for two months now was in desperate need for a session on the couch. So, I paired these two cards and asked: Why does pressing pause feel so threatening? And what happens when relentless mastery meets restorative stillness? I also brought the Eight of Wands into the mix because I know we have all experienced a sense of urgency when it comes to creating, checking off a to-do list, or simply just by existing. In this episode I touch on:Why rest feels unsafe. First we look at the knight in the Four of Swords with three blades suspended overhead and one tucked beneath him. I talk about how many of us lie down “at the ready,” never fully releasing vigilance. Polyvagal Theory helps us name that jumpy nervous-system state and identify the ventral vagal calm we're craving. How hustle culture rewires worth. Drawing on Juliet Schor's research and Devon Price's Laziness Does Not Exist, we trace the way late-stage capitalism elevates exhaustion to a status symbol, turning the Eight of Pentacles into a bit of a warning sign. The shame spiral of speed. Brené Brown's work on perfectionism meets the Eight of Wands, highlighting our belief that value = how much we accomplish and how fast we deliver. Spoiler: that metric is unsustainable.A values check-in. I share a quick exercise I use with clients comparing an “ideal day” with a so-called “lazy day” to expose how easily we mislabel restoration as failure.Practical invitations. From booking bodywork to choosing a new setting (nature, a quiet room, etc.), I offer ways to step outside the urgent grind and let your nervous system soften into safety. The takeaway: the Four of Swords isn't laziness; it's necessary maintenance. And until our Eight of Pentacles selves learn to lay down the hammer (even briefly) true stability will stay out of reach.Reference material and further reading:Devon Price, PhD — Laziness Does Not ExistBook page (Simon & Schuster): https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Laziness-Does-Not-Exist/Devon-Price/9781797120591 Simon & SchusterAuthor hub / articles: https://devonprice.medium.com/ MediumJuliet Schor, PhD — The Overworked AmericanBook page (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/Overworked-American-Juliet-Schor/dp/046505434X AmazonFaculty bio (Boston College): https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/morrissey/departments/sociology/people/faculty-directory/juliet-schor.html Boston CollegeBrené Brown, PhD, LMSW — The Gifts of ImperfectionBook page: https://brenebrown.com/book/the-gifts-of-imperfection/ Brené BrownOfficial site: https://brenebrown.comStephen W. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I have a timely and tender conversation with my friend and favorite financial educator Mimi Cirbusova to explore what it means to find stability when the world feels like it's crumbling. Whether it's rising rent, global uncertainty, or emotional exhaustion, we're all navigating something right now. This episode is an invitation to pause, reflect, and reimagine what stability looks like for you.Mimi walks us through her Money Mountain framework, and together we explore how tarot (especially the Fours) can help us ground ourselves, soften financial shame, and build emotional resilience in real, accessible ways.✨ In This Conversation, We Explore:Why “stability” looks different than it used to and how to meet yourself where you areHow the nervous system and financial anxiety are deeply connectedThe symbolic (and somatic) energy of the Four of SwordsThe tension between the Four of Pentacles and Four of Wands (survival vs. joy)Reframing saving, spending, and celebrating through a trauma-informed lensHow tarot can soothe money shame and create space for gentler decision-makingWhy community is essential for both emotional and financial well-being
This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm stepping back into my music-journalist roots (yes, I share a tidbit of my personal lore in this episode haha) and I'm leaning hard on my therapist brain to do something I've been dying to do: a Jungian-tarot psychoanalysis of Sleep Token's new single, “Damocles.” Beyond dissecting the song itself, this episode journeys into the artist's mind and unpacks the relentless push to outdo one's last creation, highlighting the unique ache of making art under capitalism. In this episode, I look at how a seemingly stripped-down metal track can crack open huge psychological themes of coping with fame, creative and emotional burnout, cognitive dissonance, and the inevitable collapse of any persona. Drawing on Jung's ideas of the Persona and Shadow, I unpack Vessel's lyrics line by line, explore the myth of Damocles, and show how the song mirrors key tarot archetypes like The Tower, The Moon, Seven of Wands, and The Emperor (but specifically The Emperor from the Somnia Tarot with that anvil-over-the-throne vibe).Along the way, you'll hear:Why the song's minimal arrangement is a clever metaphor for longing to return to simplicity amid skyrocketing successHow anonymity and adoration create cognitive dissonance and create emotional whiplashThe inner critic's cameo: “I know these chords are boring, but I can't always be killing the game”A tarot-infused reading of the lyrics that reveal a map from persona collapse to individuation and integrationEven if Sleep Token never hits your playlist, you'll still love hearing a therapist psychoanalyze a song and weave its themes through universal tarot archetypes. So grab your deck, hit play on “Damocles,” and join me for a deep dive where metal meets myth and tarot meets therapy.Want to find out all of the ways you can connect with me live this month? This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm continuing my monthly Tarot Therapy series by exploring a topic I've been wanting to discuss for ages: How tarot and witchcraft function as Psychodrama.Specifically, I explore how tarot and witchcraft can be understood and practiced through the lens of psychodrama, a powerful therapeutic method developed by Dr. Jacob Moreno. Psychodrama is essentially theater for the psyche. It's an embodied way of working with emotion, memory, and healing through role play, creativity, and storytelling. If you've ever lit a candle for someone you love, pulled a tarot card that made your stomach drop, or cried while drawing a protection sigil - then you've already engaged in psychodrama. In this episode, I share why I believe tarot and magick aren't just symbolic or ritualistic, but active, expressive healing tools. I talk about how tarot spreads become psyche-inspired stages, how tarot becomes characters, and how we can use these practices to externalize our inner world in ways that go beyond talk therapy.I also walk you through a guided psychodrama-inspired tarot practice using a technique called the soliloquy - a beautiful, embodied way to give voice to something you've been holding inside. ✨ In this episode, I talk about:What psychodrama is and how it relates to tarot and ritualWhy embodiment and symbolism matter for emotional healingHow to turn your tarot spread into a living storyA guided soliloquy-style tarot activity to help you release what's been unspoken Want to find out all of the ways you can connect with me live this month? This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast I'm exploring a delicate identity that many people carry without ever naming: the wounded caretaker. Inspired by a social media trend that says, “I probably just needed a hug, so I became a therapist,” this episode takes a deep dive into the lifelong emotional patterns that develop when we're asked to care for others before we're ready…and before we've been cared for ourselves. In this episode, I unpack the concept of parentification - when a child is placed in the role of caretaker, whether emotionally or physically, and what that does to their developing sense of self. Through the archetype of the Queen of Pentacles, we examine how this card (often celebrated for her nurturing energy) can also hold shadow traits of burnout, over-functioning, and self-neglect. I explore how tarot archetypes like the Ten of Wands, Page of Cups, Six of Pentacles, The Devil, and The Star offer a rich map for understanding the cycle of exhaustion, grief, and hidden hopes of those who were taught to meet everyone else's needs and neglect their own. I also bring in psychological research and frameworks like Internal Family Systems (IFS) and attachment theory to illustrate how the identity of the helper often masks a quiet desperation to be held, seen, and nurtured. This episode is dedicated to those of you who have always been the “strong one,” the “go-to” person, or the “emotional rock” and who might be quietly wondering: But when will someone take care of me? And just a quick note before we dive in: the phrase “we're all wounded healers” is often attributed to Carl Jung, who did explore the idea that healing often stems from our own pain. That said, the exact quote has been credited to several different folks over time. The first time I heard it was back in 2009, when I was taking classes to become a certified domestic violence counselor, and honestly, it was one of the most validating phrases I had ever heard. It gave me permission to keep moving forward in the healing profession, knowing that I didn't need to be fully healed to help others. That nuance really sits at the heart of today's conversation. ✨ If you've ever felt resentful after giving too much, struggled to ask for help, or found your sense of worth tangled up in how useful you are to others, this episode will speak directly to that wound. I also offer journal prompts, card pulls, and strategies to help you begin the healing process…so you can learn to care for yourself with the same devotion you've shown others.
This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm discussing a tender and often overlooked habit many of us carry: over-explaining. In this episode, I explore the psychological roots of this behavior through the lens of the Page of Swords, an archetype that is curious, alert, and sometimes altered by experiences of gaslighting or a lack of conflict resolution. We'll unpack how early experiences with unresolved conflict or emotional invalidation can lead us to constantly seek clarity, not just for understanding and being understood, but also for safety. I explore how the Page of Swords becomes the internal part of us that can't rest until everything has been said just right, and how that habit, while protective, can also be exhausting. From there, we journey through the Swords court to see how our communication style evolves over time: from the anxious explaining of the Page, to the defensive urgency of the Knight, the discerning clarity of the Queen, and finally the peaceful detachment of the King. Each archetype offers insight into how we can move from over-explaining to grounded self-trust.If you've ever sent a “just to clarify…” text, stayed up all night replaying a conversation (hello Nine of Swords), or struggled with the need to be understood perfectly, this episode is for you. I also share practical strategies and tarot prompts to support your healing, self-reflection, and emotional regulation.✨ Tune in for a heartfelt, validating, and empowering exploration of communication, trauma responses, and the healing journey from the Page to King of Swords.
I'm doing something a little different this week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast! I'm re-releasing an episode from a few years ago on Tarot and Parts Work, where I get nerdy about the therapeutic model of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Jungian Depth Psychology through the lens of tarot.I have a few reasons for this: First, there's been a surge of interest in this intersection, so I want to bring more visibility to the topic for newer listeners. Second, I'll be traveling over the next few weeks and won't be able to record a new episode. So, whether this is your first time listening or a revisit, I hope you find new insights in this conversation.
This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm continuing the new Tarot Therapy series, where I explore tarot through the lens of therapeutic theories and modalities. In this episode, I'm nerding out about Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Suit of Wands and uncovering how the fiery energy of Wands aligns perfectly with the psychology of change, motivation, and burnout. At its core, Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic approach designed to help people work through ambivalence and move toward change. I spend time talking about how the four fundamental MI processes (Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning) mirror the journey of the Suit of Wands, making this an exciting and dynamic pairing.Join me as I explore how each card in the Suit of Wands maps onto different aspects of MI, using a fictional client case study to illustrate these concepts in action. From the Ace of Wands igniting motivation to the Ten of Wands warning us about burnout, this episode walks you through how tarot can help us better understand the change process. If you've ever felt stuck in cycles of procrastination, burnout, or self-doubt (or if you just want to explore new ways to approach personal growth) this episode is for you! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I explore how the brain's dopamine system drives us to feel intoxicated by toxic relationships. Inspired by conversations with clients, I discuss the science behind intermittent reinforcement and how tarot cards like The Devil and the Two of Swords reversed perfectly mirror these psychological patterns. Join me as I walk you through the neurobiological and emotional mechanics behind toxic relationship cycles and share insights from the minor arcana that represent these forces. I also talk about the reversed behavioral characteristics of the Knight of Cups, the role of cognitive dissonance, and the pointed, yet nurturing guidance from the Queen of Pentacles for reclaiming stability and self-worth. The Moon, Wheel of Fortune, and Eight of Swords make their role known in this process as well.If you've ever wondered why you find it so hard to walk away from a toxic relationship or want to develop a healthier relationship with yourself, this episode is a must-listen! This week onThe Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm wading into the intersection of tarot and cognition with Dr. Thomas Brooks, a research psychologist, educator, and tarot enthusiast. Together, we explore how tarot fosters cognitive flexibility, promotes self-reflection, and helps us hold complex dualities. We discuss the power of projection, the role of archetypes like The Emperor, and how pattern recognition can guide deeper insights. Thomas also shares his journey of blending tarot with academia, how this tool can reframe our thinking, and why he doesn't currently read tarot for himself.Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation about tarot as a cognitive tool! You can find Dr. Thomas Brooks on Instagram@impulsegnometarot, or check out his podcast,The Psychosocial Distancing Podcast. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am nerding out! I explore the concept of Tarot by Omission: what it means when a particular suit or archetype is missing from a reading, and how that absence can guide deeper self-exploration. To bring this concept to life, I introduce a fictional, therapeutic case study, analyzing a tarot spread where Cups and Swords are absent, revealing deeper emotional and cognitive blocks. I also offer practical applications for identifying and working with omissions in your own readings. Side note: I didn't explore the absence of court cards, but I will be exploring this in an upcoming workshop inside The Symposium! Inspired by my clinical musings on silence in the therapy room, I reference the following study in this episode: Koudenburg, N., Postmes, T., & Gordijn, E. H. (2011). Disrupting the flow: How brief silences in group conversations affect social needs. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am introducing a brand-new series—Tarot Therapy! In this series, I'm returning to the foundation of my work, where I explore tarot through the lens of psycho-therapeutic models and theory. Each episode in this series will dive into a different psychological theory and/ or therapeutic model, blending them with tarot to deepen self-awareness and of course, personal growth. In this kickoff episode, I explore The Aces in tarot through the Transtheoretical Model of Change, also known as the Stages of Change. If you're part of The Tarot Diagnosis community, The Symposium, you might recognize this concept from a recent workshop. This episode serves as a deep dive into how each Ace corresponds to a different stage of change. Precontemplation → Ace of Cups: When we're unaware that change is needed. What are we oblivious to that needs to change? Contemplation → Ace of Swords: The moment clarity strikes, but doubt lingers. What's the story we tell ourselves about change? Preparation → Ace of Pentacles: Laying the foundation and gathering resources. What support do we need? Action → Ace of Wands: Taking bold steps toward transformation. What's one small action we can take right now? Maintenance → The Fool: Sustaining progress with curiosity and resilience. How do we keep moving forward? Throughout the episode, I pull cards to explore each stage more deeply, offering prompts and reflections for your own tarot practice. Plus, I've modified the Celtic Cross spread to align with the Stages of Change—head over to Instagram (@TheTarotDiagnosis) to check it out! If you're ready to explore transformation through tarot and psychology, this episode is for you. Listen now and let's dive into Tarot Therapy! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm exploring the collective and personal energy of 2025, a year ruled by The Hermit. From a numerological perspective, 2025 reduces to 9, aligning us with the wisdom, solitude, and introspection of this archetype. In this episode, I reflect on key elements of The Hermit—the lantern, staff, cloak, and the path they walk—all offering us unique insights into how we can navigate our inner and outer worlds this year. I also share an exciting project inspired by this archetype: a nearly 200-page guided journal filled with prompts, rituals, tarot spreads, and more to guide you throughout 2025. You can grab the fillable, digital version or a physical copy here. Let's embrace The Hermit's wisdom together. Wishing you an insightful, healthy, and transformative 2025! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm reflecting on the last year and my personal relationship to vulnerability. A few weeks ago, we reached the 150th episode of this podcast, and I've been quietly contemplating the journey that brought us here. To those of you who have been with me since the beginning, and to the newer listeners who've joined along the way—thank you. Your support and engagement mean the world to me. Lately, I've found myself at a crossroads, grappling with personal challenges that have tested my resilience. As I step into a new era of vulnerability, I'm sharing some deeply personal solstice and birthday reflections with you. In this episode, I pull three tarot cards to explore who I was, who I am, and who I am becoming: Who I Was: Judgement (Reversed) — A reminder to relinquish control, codependency, and people pleasing in order to embrace freedom. Who I Am: Ten of Pentacles (Reversed) — Facing fear and seeking the courage required to rebuild after life shreds the future narrative I wrote. Who I Am Becoming: King of Cups (Reversed) — Embracing the importance of confronting emotional restraint and allowing my emotional messiness to be witnessed. Through these reflections, I'm embracing the messiness of growth and inviting you to do the same. My hope for 2025 is that we all open ourselves up to being seen, loved, and accepted in our full complexity. Join me for this deeply personal journey and reflect on how your own tarot cards might mirror your path. Want to find out all of the ways you can connect with me live this month? This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am sitting down with Brigit Esselmont, the founder of Biddy Tarot and the best-selling author of Everyday Tarot. Brigit just released her latest book, Intuitive Manifesting, a practical guide to using your intuition to supercharge your manifestations. In this episode, Brigit and I spend time exploring the intersection of manifestation, intuition, and tarot. We explore the inspiration behind her new book, discuss how to uncover your true desires beyond superficial goals, and touch on the psychological aspects of manifestation, including the power of visualization and managing limiting beliefs. We also pull cards together to reflect on the archetypes of manifestation, specifically The Devil and the Page of Pentacles, an unsuspecting pairing that ends up leading us down an insightful path. Throughout our conversation, Brigit shares how to align logic and intuition in the manifestation process, how tarot can support visualization practices, and why dropping from the head to the heart is a vital step in manifesting meaningful, fulfilling outcomes. This conversation is packed with actionable insights, examples, and inspiring advice for anyone curious about the practical and intuitive sides of manifestation. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am highlighting the hidden narratives that shape our lives: the unspoken family stories and ancestral shadows that influence us in ways we might not even realize. Inspired by my clinical work (especially during the holiday season), the collection of essays What My Mother and I Don't Talk About, and my recent workshop on ancestral shadows (available for replay inside The Symposium), this episode explores the legacies we inherit and how they shape our identities. Join me as I discuss how the suit of Pentacles reflects these dynamics, from the stories we inherit (Ten of Pentacles) to the active work of transformation (Eight of Pentacles). We'll explore generational trauma, the science of epigenetics, and how unspoken family narratives often manifest in unexpected ways. If this episode resonates with you and you're ready to dive deeper, I invite you to join The Tarot Diagnosis Symposium. Our monthly workshops are a space for self-reflection, healing, and growth. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I felt compelled to approach the podcast a bit differently. Like many of you, I've been sitting with a deep sense of grief and uncertainty, and I knew it didn't feel right to just dive into a typical episode without acknowledging that shared weight. So today, I'm letting tarot guide the conversation. I pulled three powerful and pertinent cards: The Wheel of Fortune, reminding us of life's constant cycles; the Four of Cups, encouraging us to hold true to our values; and the Queen of Swords, an encouragement to embody personal truth and strength. Together, they offer wisdom on how to stay grounded, thoughtful, and resilient. Join me as I reflect on these cards, share insights, and offer a space for finding strength and comfort in uncertain times. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am diving deep into the intersection of horror, monsters, and mental health in celebration of spooky season. I'm joined by special guest and fellow therapist Candis Green, host of the Mental Health is Horrifying podcast, who is an expert on horror and mental health. We have a nerdy and enlightening conversation exploring how horror films and monsters are more than just entertainment—they are reflections of our psychic terrain, particularly the shadow. Together, we discuss how horror helps us confront and integrate our repressed fears, the emotional release horror films provide, and how finding our "monster soulmate" can offer deeper insights into our shadow. Candis and I also spend time talking about the emotional compensatory function of horror and its role in performing psychic balancing. We also walk listeners through a tarot based exercise in order to find our “monster soulmate.” Tune in for a fascinating conversation about embracing the darkness within and using horror as a tool for self-exploration. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am exploring two important functions of the shadow: complexes and projections. Inspired by recent talks, presentations, and my upcoming book on shadow work (to be published by Weiser in Fall 2025), this episode highlights how the shadow, tarot, and psychology intersect. Throughout the episode I discuss The Star as a shadow, the Six of Pentacles as a complex, and the King of Cups as a projection. We end with the Nine of Wands as our “Now what?” card. Episode Highlights: Complexes: These are stories that form from unacknowledged shadow material, often functioning autonomously and influencing how we see the world. For example, an inferiority complex might form in response to childhood experiences of being belittled or compared to others. Projections: A defense mechanism that allows us to attribute our own undesirable traits or feelings onto others, helping us avoid confronting our shadow. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am analyzing the symbolism of the Ten of Swords, focusing on its representation of fear, judgment, and self-sabotage. I explore how this card encapsulates the culmination of suffering and defeat, not only from external forces but often from our own internalized fears. This episode looks at self-sabotage behaviors driven by the dread of being perceived or judged, how that prevents us from reaching our true potential and how we can shift to begin uncovering deeper truths about our lives and relationships. Throughout this episode, I pull the Page of Pentacles, Knight of Wands, Four of Pentacles, and Two of Cups to help expand the discussion. I also spend time touching on Carl Jung's theories on the shadow, the importance of parts work through Internal Family Systems (IFS), and the universal experience of projection. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I am exploring a concept that has been infiltrating several of my therapy sessions this past month - the idea of neutrality. We can sometimes find ourselves emotionally charged when confronted with challenging cards like The Tower, Three of Swords, or The Emperor. These immediate reactions can cloud our judgment and hinder the insightful guidance that tarot offers. So, I explore the concept of value neutrality, a term rooted in research ethics, and how it applies to everyday life and practices like tarot. By maintaining impartiality and avoiding bias, we create space to interpret tarot beyond the surface-level knee-jerk reaction. This approach allows for a more balanced understanding, transforming fear and anxiety into opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Through real-life examples and psychological frameworks such as Internal Family Systems and shadow work, I illustrate how neutrality enables us to confront and integrate the parts of ourselves we often suppress or project onto others. By stepping into a neutral stance, we not only enhance the depth and clarity of our tarot readings but also foster emotional regulation and resilience. This practice encourages curiosity over judgment, enabling us to ask pivotal questions that unravel deeper truths about our lives and relationships. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm having a bit of nerdy fun by exploring the top nine cognitive distortions I have been seeing inside my therapy practice. Surprise, but no surprise, I pull a TON of swords along with several reversed majors. Check out the cognitive distortions below and tune in to the episode to see which cards show up for each distortion! All-or-Nothing Thinking: Viewing situations in black-and-white terms, seeing things as either perfect or awful, with no middle ground, or willingness to acknowledge a “gray” area. Overgeneralization: Generalizing a single negative event to an overall pattern, leading to negative self-assessment and worldview. Mental Filter: Focusing on a single negative detail while ignoring positive aspects, leading to a pessimistic perspective. Magical Thinking: Making negative predictions about the future without sufficient evidence, treating them as facts. Believing we know what others are thinking, often assuming negative thoughts without evidence. Catastrophizing: Exaggerating the importance of negative events or minimizing positive achievements, skewing perspective. Emotional Reasoning: Accepting emotions as facts, believing that feeling something makes it true. Should Statements: Imposing unrealistic expectations on ourselves or others, leading to guilt and shame. Labeling: Assigning negative labels to ourselves or others based on a single event, often using emotionally charged language. Personalization: Blaming oneself for events beyond one's control, assuming undue responsibility for others' feelings and actions. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I was inspired by a facetious conversation inside The Symposium about how you could use tarot as a form of marketing (e.g., Want to go from the Ten of Swords to the Ace of Cups?) I sat on this conversation for a while because it did strike a cord - but I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to explore it. Then it hit me - this felt a lot like spiritual bypassing. Spiritual bypassing involves using spiritual practices and beliefs to avoid confronting unresolved emotional issues and psychological wounds - it can also feel like toxic positivity. Going from the Ten of Swords to the Ace of Cups without acknowledging everything that happens in between is nothing but a disservice. Join me as I reflect on this topic and pull cards like the King of Pentacles, Queen of Wands (reversed), The Hanged Man, and The Hermit. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I explore the challenges and rewards of seeking deep, meaningful connections in a fast-paced, often superficial world. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm pulling cards to the concept of the golden shadow, a lesser-known aspect of Carl Jung's theory of the shadow. While the idea of the shadow and shadow work is well-known and often discussed in the realms of tarot and psychology, the golden shadow highlights the positive traits and potentials we might have repressed or ignored. Throughout this episode, I pull the Page of Swords as an example of golden shadow work, highlighting how curiosity may be repressed due to negative feedback in childhood. The Magician as representing resourcefulness and the potential within. The Seven of Swords highlighting strategy, resourcefulness, and self-assertion. Follow along as I create a “Golden Shadow” spread on the spot and analyze the cards I pull! Queen of Swords: Unacknowledged potential. Ace of Cups: An obstacle preventing the embrace of this potential. The Emperor: Steps to reclaim and integrate this hidden strength. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm sitting down with The Gender Doula, Eli Lawliet, PhD. Eli (he/him) is the dreamer and weaver of The Gender Doula. In addition to a decade of experience researching trans healthcare, law, policy, and history, he has formal training as a full spectrum doula, breathwork facilitator, and tarot reader, as well as many years of surviving the world of poverty wages and retail work. The broad scope of his experience directly informs the equally broad spectrum of his work as The Gender Doula. Eli has been seeing clients since January of 2020 and has worked with trans folks nationally and internationally in sessions, classes, and workshops. Though he was born in Oklahoma and raised in Missouri, Eli currently lives in Los Angeles (Gabrieliño-Tongva, Chumash, & Kizh land) with his partner, three cats, a dog, and four snakes. I invite you to join Eli and I as we nerd out on the construct of gender through the lens of tarot. We touch on cards such as The Hanged Man, The Empress, and The Emperor. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm doing something I have never done before. I am exploring tarot through the lens of music - specifically the iconic Taylor Swift. Swift recently took the world by storm (as she always does) not just via her Eras world tour, but by dropping a (double) album in the midst of the tour. Admittedly, I have never been a Swiftie and only recently started listening to her music when she released Midnights. I tend to listen to more obscure metal and indie folk music - I know…weird mix. But it is what it is. Anyway, I was listening to Swift's new Tortured Poets Department album and really enjoyed the irony and sarcasm throughout the song “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.” I kept thinking about cards that would depict this song and found it to be a fun way to deepen my connection to the cards. So, I invite you to join me on an exciting trip through one of Taylor Swift's newest songs as I psychoanalyze the meanings of the lyrics through the archetypal symbols of The Empress, Seven of Cups, Ten of Wands, Five of Cups, reversed Ace of Cups, Eight of Pentacles, Three of Swords, and The Magician. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm getting existential. There's been an uptick in discussion in my therapy practice around the concept of death, the meaning of life, and existential dread. So, naturally I'm turning to tarot to help me examine, ponder, and even come to terms with my own existential dread. The Five of Cups, Queen of Swords, Hanged Man, Two of Wands, and Nine of Cups all make an appearance and help to write the narrative of an existential crisis. I'm inspired by Freud's essay “On Transience” as well as the work of Dr. Irvin Yalom this episode. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I invite you to step into the transformative practice of Shadow Work, guided by the symbolism of The Sun card. Unpacking the teachings of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, I explore how the shadow encompasses suppressed fears, desires, and insecurities within us. Contrary to common misconceptions, the shadow isn't inherently dark; it also encompasses lighter aspects we've pushed aside. Shadow Work involves bravely bringing these hidden aspects into the light for personal growth and healing. I highlight the importance of ongoing self-reflection and dispel the notion that Shadow Work is a quick fix. Drawing parallels with Freud's id, ego, and superego, I offer insights into understanding these concepts for a deeper exploration of the shadow self. Tune in as I introduce a tarot spread inspired by Freud's theories, designed to aid in navigating the complexities of shadow work. I invite you to join me on this journey of self-discovery, as I pull cards to a meaty shadow work spread and work to uncover the transformative power of integrating our shadows to embrace authenticity and promote liberation. It is so nice to be back recording some episodes. This has been a weird month for me - you probably noticed episodes have been inconsistent and I've been rather quiet on social media. Unfortunately, I was insanely sick for nearly three weeks, but I'm finally coming out the other side and experiencing some glimpses of energy again. This week, I explore generational trauma, focusing on the Mother Wound. I discuss how trauma can impact us unintentionally and through the concept of epigenetics. Using The Star archetype, I navigate hope, resilience, and healing in strained parental relationships, drawing from my own experiences. I examine four avenues of the mother wound, represented by the reversed queens. To heal, I advocate for self-compassion and inner child work, aligning The Star with each reversed queen and their corresponding page. I touch on how acknowledging societal factors in motherhood and advocating for breaking the cycle of inherited trauma is vital if we're going to heal the mother wound. My hope is this episode brings you clarity and comfort. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm exploring the world of Attachment Theory through the lens of tarot! I start off anchoring us with The Devil archetype and then lead us on a journey into Anxious, Avoidant, Disorganized, and Secure attachment styles. To explore these concepts, I spend time working with The Moon, Nine of Swords, Four of Cups, Eight of Cups, Queen of Swords, Two of Cups, Six of Pentacles and then the Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine of Wands. So, it's a very card heavy episode! Please keep in mind this is a general, introductory overview of different attachment styles. There is so much depth and reasoning that goes into why we lean more towards one style over another, which I will explore in future episodes. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm stepping into the world of social media tarot readers with Annie Buell aka Moonlight Medium who you might know from TikTok (check them out here). We've all been scrolling and come across some questionable readings before. Annie was noticing an alarming amount of these on TikTok and started two series to help educate folks on “Terrible Tarot” and “Trustworthy Tarot.” Together we get real about social media tarot readings, exploring peoples' intentions, how to spot red AND green flags, as well as the importance of autonomy and knowing if you're in the right mental and emotional space to be receiving messages from folks on social media. Don't worry - there is plenty of laughter and even a few moments of reminiscing on the old “chain email” and “MySpace bulletin” days! Remember those? *cringe* Eventually Annie and I start pulling cards and the messages and interpretations of tarot do not hold back. I can't wait for you all to listen in! Learn more about Annie and their offerings here. Have you heard the news?! The first official Tarot Diagnosis spread book is now available! Welcome back to a new year of The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast! This week I'm exploring the symbolism of the Temperance archetype while also finding where it intersects with the Strength card - as it's the card of 2024. Throughout the episode, I draw parallels between Temperance and psychological concepts like self-regulation, radical acceptance, and change, which we see in therapeutic modalities such as ACT and DBT. I discover that rather than merely advocating for balance, Temperance emphasizes the integration of conflicting emotions and thoughts to achieve inner harmony. Eventually this leads to a discussion on the implications of the Strength card, highlighting the importance of self-compassion and navigating the both/and space rather than falling into if/then thinking. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm pulling cards and offering a raw and vulnerable glimpse into what this last year has been like personally and professionally. From surgery, to a farewell - I touch on everything that has made this year what it was through the lens of Death as our anchor. The World, 8 of Cups, and King of Pentacles emerge first as reflections of the year and have me reflecting on the departure of my former co-host. Then the Wheel of Fortune, Two of Swords, and Three of Cups arrive to help me explore the energy of 2024. These cards get me thinking about the beginnings and endings of relationships (both with ourselves and others) and leave me wondering what relationships need to be tended to and which relationships may have run their course. I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your endless support and encouragement this past year. It wasn't the easiest year, but it was wildly fulfilling in so many ways. So, I invite you to pull cards alongside me as I reflect on 2023 and then look forward to 2024. Have you heard the news?! The first official Tarot Diagnosis spread book is now available! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I'm joined by Cami Ostman - a former Internal Family Systems therapist who has journeyed away from organized religion, into tarot and therapy, and now into storytelling. Cami vulnerably explores her experience of entering and exiting a fundamental religion, how pivotal tarot has been in her personal healing journey, and how she has transitioned from one healing profession into another. Throughout the episode, we talk about Eight of Wands, Ten of Pentacles, Page of Swords, Ten of Cups, Six of Swords, and The Magician. Even now, writing out those cards I feel like they make such perfect sense for this conversation on the different versions of ourselves and the various lives we will inevitably live. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, Theresa Reed (aka @thetarotlady) joins me to discuss life's most difficult moments and her new latest book “The Cards You're Dealt - How To Deal When Life Gets Real.” Our conversation explores grief, loss, tragedy, and the role tarot can play in helping us to navigate life's difficulties. Theresa and I touch on societal pressures, why we often neglect certain types of grief beyond death, and we challenge toxic positivity and our societal discomfort with acknowledging mortality. We spend some time discussing the importance of breaking the silence around unrecognized grief and the significance of creating space for open conversations. We open the episode with the Seven of Swords and Two of Wands, and Theresa makes a powerful connection between our two cards. Theresa's book, "The Cards You're Dealt," is praised for its acknowledgment of various forms of grief experienced in everyday life, not just related to death. It emphasizes the need for curiosity about our emotions and internal worlds, allowing individuals to navigate unexpected waves of grief more effectively - all with the help of tarot. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I tackle a topic I think many of you have pondered yourselves. How do we find harmony while we're rooted in logic, but long for magic? A Symposium member reached out to me recently and posed an insightful question. I had already planned on doing some work with The Hanged Man this week, and I felt her question paired so well with that anchor. I begin the episode by exploring the concept of logic and magic through the lens of The Hanged Man. Then The Hierophant, Hermit, and Ace of Cups all make their presence known. I spend quite a bit of time talking about Dialectical Behavior Therapy and dialectical thought and how that seems to be the most appropriate avenue for finding harmony in opposition. The question asked is below: “Hello! I have a question and I think it is a difficult one, but I do not know who I can talk with. In general there are two sides inside of me. I believe in logic. I understand how Tarot cards and horoscopes are working from the psychological side. I know deeply why I am using them and how it helps. But there is also another side of me who is really interested in all the spiritual things. About mystery and energy flow. And it is more about chaos theory and that everything has meaning. And this part makes me believe in all "magic" things. So my question - how do you manage these two sides and have a clear mind for decisions?” I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, Mimi Cirbusova joins me to explore the personal stories and baggage we carry around about money and personal finances. Mimi is brilliant at taking a topic often dominated by shame and infusing it with compassion and understanding. We use tarot to help us explore our money scripts (take the quiz here), find out what experiences contribute to our money stories, discuss how to regain a sense of financial power when you're feeling anxious and overwhelmed. I'm surprised and not surprised that we both somehow pull all of the cups for this episode…but it makes sense. Money is such a delicate topic that often brings up a ton of emotions and discomfort. Let us know if you ended up pulling cups alongside of us too! Mimi will be hosting an exclusive workshop on the same topic inside The Symposium this month AND we will be LIVE on Instagram on Thursday Nov. 9th at 6pm ET. So come hang out with us! This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, I have an epiphany about the Justice card. You'll hear me realize why this card has always frightened me, made me squirm, and want to shove it back in the deck (or in the trash) and pull again. It was such a profound moment, even my partner was like… “Oh sh*t!” I tackle the psychological concept of cognitive dissonance and somehow explore Temperance, Five of Swords, Seven of Wands, Nine of Wands, Queen of Swords, and The Fool all within a relatively short amount of time. Side note: Thank you all for making this space encouraging, safe, and uplifting so that I knew it would be okay to share my own personal experience with this card so publicly. This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast, join me for a candid and personal conversation about the Wheel of Fortune and how we can humanize an often elusive, or superficial archetype. Sarah Thibault, host of The Side Woo podcast joins me and together we talk about how we can reclaim the Wheel of Fortune by viewing it through the lens of power and control, karma, comparison, radical acceptance, and ritual. Yes - all of that. And somehow it all works. We also explore traditional and modern depictions of this archetype while exploring how the images pertain to modern emotional and psychological experiences - like navigating the social media algorithm and not losing our inherent sense of value in the process. To learn more about Sarah, check out her podcast The Side Woo, subscriber to her substack Art Date, and browse her captivating artwork.
