Is a pregnant nun about to crash Poland's election?

The Europeans

In theory, the government's guy looks set to win Poland's presidential election, making life a hell of a lot easier for Donald Tusk as he attempts to undo eight years of destructive authoritarian rule under the previous rightwing populists. But might a pregnant nun swoop in and change everything at the last minute? For an explanation of this metaphor (and yes, it is just a metaphor), listen in to this week's great interview with Poland's best political YouTubers, Dominika Sitnicka and Agata Szczęśniak. We're also digging into Sweden's plans to crack down on porn influencers, and celebrating the sweeter side of last week's mass blackouts in Spain and Portugal.    Dominika and Agata are reporters at OKO.PRESS and co-hosts of its YouTube show, Program Polityczny (which can be watched with English auto-subtitles).   Thanks for listening. In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Sarah Tomlinson discusses the inspiration for and reads from her debut novel, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers'. ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers' synopsis: Anke Berben is ready to tell all. A legendary model and style icon, she reveled in headline-grabbing romances with not one but three members of the hugely influential rock band the Midnight Ramblers. The band members were as famous for their backstage drama as for their music, and Anke is the only one who fully understands the tangled relationships, betrayals, and suspicions that have added to the Ramblers' enduring appeal and mystique. That is most evident in the mystery around Anke's role in the death of Mal, the band's founder and Anke's husband, in 1969. When Mari Hawthorn accepts the job to work with Anke on her memoir, she is dead set on getting to the truth of Mal's death. She has always been deft at navigating the fatal charms of celebrities, having grown up with a narcissistic, alcoholic father. As she ingratiates herself into the world of the band, she grows enchanted, against her better judgment, by these legendary rock stars. She knows she can't get pulled in too deep, otherwise she'll compromise her objectivity—and her integrity. Filled with all of the glamour and attitude of rock and roll, ‘The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers' is a bighearted page-turner that will appeal to fans of ‘Daisy Jones & The Six' and ‘Almost Famous'. Sarah Tomlinson, a former music journalist, has been a ghostwriter since 2008, penning more than 20 books, including five 'New York Times' bestsellers. In 2015, she published the father-daughter memoir, 'Good Girl' (Gallery Books). She wrote 'The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers', her first novel, in-between assignments for a who's who of celebrity clients.  Check out Christy's interview with Svetlana Zill and Alexis Bloom, the directors of the documentary ‘Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmqtedDBbl4   MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Rock is Lit theme music [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” “Midnight Rambler” – Rolling Stones “You Got the Silver” – Rolling Stones “Salt of the Earth” – Rolling Stones [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” Rock is Lit theme music   LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 Sarah Tomlinson's website: https://sarahtomlinson.com/ Sarah Tomlinson on Instagram and Twitter: @duchessofrock Sarah Tomlinson on Facebook: @SarahTomlinson Christy Alexander Hallberg's website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislit Christy Alexander Hallberg on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Rock is Lit on Instagram: @rockislitpodcast Learn more about your ad choices. For anyone who loves a poignant, thoughtful, revealing and all round incredibly written memoir, Ali Millar's The Last Days is a knock-out.   It's 1982 and in the Kingdom Hall we are Jehovah's Witnesses. The state of the world shows us the end is close, and Satan is like a roaring lion, seeking to devour us. Ali is waiting for Armageddon. Her childhood revolves around regular meetings in the Kingdom Hall, where she is haunted by vivid images of the Second Coming, her mind populated by the bodies that will litter the earth upon Jehovah's return. An unforgettable story of one woman's courageous journey to freedom, Ali Millar's The Last Days is an unmissable memoir for people who loved Tara Westover's Educated.  We recommend buying from your local indie or you can get it from our shop. Mike and Scott get into all sorts of nooks and cranny's featured in the episode. And yes, they talk at length about the profanity in Dave and Julia's conversation and what it means for us a society today. Insightful, and slightly entertaining, this episode of 'The Letterman Podcast,' is one that should not be missed! Now, a quick blurb about Scott: If you haven't read 'The Last Days of Letterman,' and you appreciate what Dave & Company did even marginally, this is the book for you. Mike holds this book up at the same level of Bill Carter's books; essential reading for anyone who enjoys David Letterman. The last 6 weeks of 'The Late Show with David Letterman,' was nothing short of magical as far as television shows are concerned. It was the send off of arguably the greatest body of work broadcasting has ever seen. Scott's book goes behind the scenes of that remarkable run and talks to many of the staffers that made it happen. The magical feeling during the original broadcasts airing is captured in this very special book. We at The Letterman Podcast are extremely grateful that we can call Scott a friend, and he will be back in the future many times, most likely with very special guests joining us along with him. As always, we would ask that you subscribe to this show, and even consider liking it, and sharing it with everyone you know. Even your mom. This week The Movie Breakdown is coming at you with four reviews of very different movies. Speaking of different, we look at a Martin Scorsese movie that some may say goes against his reputation with the film adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel about upper class life in 1870s New York, The Age of Innocence. I also argue in the review that it actually is very much a Scorsese movie while also showing his wide range of talents and skill by tackling different subject material as well. Another director with a reputation is Olivier Megaton and we review his latest action picture, The Last Days of American Crime. We also have a slice of life 1950s period piece sci-if thriller -- yes, you read that right and no, I can't think of another movie from this specific newly created genre but here is The Vast of the Night. I need to mention that this is the first movie where a character has my son's name, Everett. If you want drastically different, then we end the movie reviews with one of the movies that launched the Asylum B-movie empire, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. After all that, we look at some of the Academy's recent announcements for moves and initiatives they are going to launch that will create more diversity and inclusiveness in the Academy Awards and hopefully, the movie industry. As always, we had a great time recording the show and we really hope you love it as well. If you do, then please help us out by spreading the word on social media. We also want to thank David Wierzbicki for the amazing illustration this week, which is a depiction of the Academy trying peel away their image and reputation for something brighter and more inclusive. A couple of weeks ago two of my favourite things collided - books and ballet! I've actually had a copy of Kerri Turners debut novel, ‘The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers' sitting on my beside table for months. So when I heard Kerri would be in town, I thought it would be an opportune moment to not only take some time out for myself and actually read this incredible book, but also interview Kerri for the podcast. When I sat down with Kerri I was half-way through the book and now that I've finished, I would like to say, ‘WOW!' What a read. I thoroughly enjoyed this one guys and if you're an adult ballerina this is a book you won't want to put down. Set in Petrograd in 1914, the novel is about two Imperial Russian Ballet dancers who fall in love during World War 1. Now if like myself, 'Petrograd' doesn't ring a bell… it's also known as Saint Petersburg, home of the Marinsky Theatre. The city has changed it's name back and forth and during 1914 it was known as Petrograd. There you go, you learn something new every day - or at least I have! I had an absolute ball reading this book as I learnt so many new things about the ballet world! I truly didn't know, until now, just how luxurious and wealthy the life of a ballet dancer was back then. Very different to todays standards! And I had no idea that most Principle Ballerinas had what they called a ‘protector' - someone that paid for their lifestyle and influenced the theatre and their roles in the company in exchange for sharing their bed. Kerri carefully uses actual famous ballerinas of this time mixed with fictional characters to share this side of the ballet world, so it truly is an incredible insight. The book is definitely not for young children. I'd say it would be okay for the teenagers. But this is the precise reason why I think any adult ballerina will absolutely LOVE this read. So many books written about ballet are targeted at children, so it's nice to have a little scandal and romance for the older age bracket of ballet lovers. Kerri and I chat about her writing process, her own ballet journey (she now teaches adults!) and the wonderfully exciting world of ballet in the early days! I really enjoyed this conversation and I think you will too.

With choreography from the world-renowned Wayne McGregor, Rourke reunites with Anne-Marie Duff as Charity, and Arthur Darvill makes his Donmar debut as Oscar, for her farewell production as Donmar Artistic Director. During Sweet Charity, multiple guest actors will play the role of Daddy Brubeck including Shaq Taylor, Adrian Lester, Le Gateau Chocolat, Beverley Knight and Clive Rowe. Ian McEwan’s subversive and entertaining new novel Machines Like Me poses fundamental questions: what makes us human? Our outward deeds or our inner lives? Could a machine understand the human heart? Machines Like Me occurs in an alternative 1980s London, where Britain has lost the Falklands war, Margaret Thatcher battles Tony Benn for power and Alan Turing achieves a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. The novel's narrator Charlie drifts through life making his money by playing the stock market when he becomes involved in a menage a trois with a difference - one of the three is one of the first synthetic humans. It is not long before this strange love triangle inhabiting an even stranger alternate reality have to confront some profound moral dilemmas. Smoke and Mirrors The Psychology of Magic at the Wellcome Collection in London explores how magicians have achieved astonishing feats of trickery by exploiting the gap between what we think we perceive and what we actually perceive. Recently scientists have begun to appreciate this ability as a powerful tool for the study of human psychology. This research has emerged from an extraordinary history that stretches back to the 19th century, where a fascination with the paranormal coincided with the birth of science as a profession and the flourishing of the entertainment industry. The author and journalist Jon Ronson made the podcast "The Butterfly Effect" about the many and sometimes surprising consequences of the rise in free online pornography. He's also written a book about public online shaming and abuse called 'So You've Been Publicly Shamed'. These two worlds meet in 'The Last Days of August' his new show telling the story of August Ames, an adult actor and model who took her own life in December 2017. We play some of episode 1 of The Last Days of August, presented and produced by Jon Ronson and Lina Misitzis and available exclusively via Audible. [Warning: the clip deals with mature subject matter and contains some discussion of suicide.]
