Back when the Village People's Can't Stop The Music was top of the charts and AC/DC's Back In Black was about to be released, Australian rock fans were hanging out for the start of FM radio that'd cater to their tastes. The race was on between 2MMM, 2Day FM and 2JJJ in Sydney, and 3EON FM and Fox FM in Melbourne. But who'd hit the airwaves first? And who'd be delayed for three weeks? Jack and Korey talk at great length about the new horror-thriller that marks John Krasinski's first big studio effort as director (and of all things produced by *that guy*? To find out who you gotta listen to the episode). Then, another 2 minute movie mile (give or take a couple) that ranges from two highly specific and very different auteurs, to direct-to-video schlock, and Nicolas Cage being his Cagiest in a long time. Oh, and STALIN too? This is a good one to listen to here on the Wages of Cinema Movies: A QUIET PLACE (2018) SINGLE WHITE FEMALE 2: THE PSYCHO (2005) SINGLE MOM'S CLUB (2014) MOM AND DAD (2018) THE DENTIST 2: BRACE YOURSELF (1998) THE DEATH OF STALIN (2018) ISLE OF DOGS (2018) The song at the end is THE EXPERIMENTAL POP ART BAND "I Won't Hurt You" from Isle of Dogs

We haven't done this in a LONG time, which makes this all the more satisfying to bring back: the "Two Minute Movie Mile" (or 2MMM for short), where we each get two minutes (or four if it's one we both saw) to discuss a movie. You got to get it out in those 120 seconds or it'll never happen again! Mwahaha. Anyway, here are the movies Jack and/or Korey saw: THE SNOWMAN (2017) MAN BITES DOG (1992) ME BEFORE YOU (2016) WISH UPON (2017) COFFY (1973) PADDINGTON 2 (2018) PHANTOM THREAD (2017) MUDBOUND (2017) GILBERT (2017) wagesofcinema@gmail.com Johnny Greenwood does the score for Phantom Thread Featuring trailers for The Snowman and Wish Upon
Amanda Keller's contribution to radio and the community in Sydney has been so good over such a long period that she was awarded an Order of Australia in 2016. If it’s true that great storytelling is at the heart of radio’s connection to its audience, then it is easy to see why Amanda is recognised as an elite radio performer. She started her career at 2MMM in the late 90s on the Andrew Denton Breakfast Show, and their on-air partnership resulted in a #1 show. In more recent times, Amanda has reached #1 again with her great mate Brendan Jones on Jonesy & Amanda - a feat few broadcasters have achieved in the Sydney breakfast market. 'They want your loyalty, they want you to share your life, particularly breakfast radio, that's the gig... You share your life and people respond to you, and then you can be told to leave without even a chance to say goodbye to your audience.' A new year, and some new (and old) films! But first, we can't get away from it (and we saw it again), so THE FORCE AWAKENS is talked about. Then at 13 minutes in we get into the Two Minute Movie Mile, with films by great French directors (Melville, Bresson, Malle), some superb but depressing tales about real-world issues (the economy, abortion, romance in the closet), and of course Capra. 1) KRAMPUS (2015) 2) IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) (again) 3) THE BIG SHORT (2015) 4) MURMUR OF THE HEART (1971) 5) LE SILENCE DE LA MER (1949) 6) CAROL (2015) 7) THE PRIZEFIGHTER AND THE LADY (1933) 8) VERA DRAKE (2004) 9) CONCUSSION (2015) 10) THE DEVIL, PROBABLY (1977) 11) PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975) (also again) wagesofcinema@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/wagesofcinema Music by John Williams
This was Turn It Up! radio series, august 1997 series 2. Recorded at 2MMM studios in Sydney and at MIX FM Traralgon, Victoria, this was probably the first time a syndicated radio series was produced digitally and sent out via a "gold" cd. It was broadcasted everywhere there was an opportunity, all over the world. Paul Fidler and I spent crazy amounts of time making this show. This is part 3 and edited for editorial purposes. This show features: new edition, deni hines, jade starling, peter andre, tina arena, neil finn, sex starved superstars, 702, pretty poison, quindon tarver, antmen, whitney houston, toni braxton, the braxtons, p.diddy/faith evans, az yet/peter cetera, will smith, vertigo, and CDB.

Before the 2MMM, we talk about some comments regarding our previous 'List' episode and what we (or Jack) got wrong with the Man for All Seasons Christian-mythology. With the Two Minute Movie Mile, Jack sees a lot of new movies (plus two maybe not-so-great Nicolas Cage ones), and Andrew watches a Lucio Fulci movie and a Spike Jonze movie and... not too much else (it's one of those months with little time). Oh, and things like Nathan Fillion in a non-sci-fi and Tippi Hedren getting (almost) eaten by a lion round out the discussion: 1) SPOTLIGHT (2015) 2) ZOMBIE (1979) 3) THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 (2015) 4) KIRK CAMERON'S SAVING CHRISTMAS (2014) 5) A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING (1988) 6) HER (2013) 7) THE NIGHT BEFORE (2015) 8) BROOKLYN (2015) 9) ROAR (1981) 10) STOLEN (2012) 11) TRESPASS (2011) 12) TRUCKER (2008) 13) THE LONG RIDERS (1980) wagesofcinema@gmail.com (Song is Duke Ellington's 'Jubilee Stomp)
We get right into it with the movie this week, as there have been a LOT to talk about: new releases go really to Jack and Andrew talks some horror (as Jack does too, this was covering the last week of October, after all), but then some animation (of varying qualities), a documentary about a making-of movie, the weirdest time travel movie ever, two or three French films (viva la France!) including one more dip into Luis Bunuel, and Jack and Andrew share their thoughts on one of the biggest bombs in recent memory. And Jack opens the show with a botched rendition of Mockingbird, which you've been (mostly) spared... visit us on facebook,com/wagesofcinema and Twitter @wagesofcinema plus email wagesofcinema@gmail.com 1) STEVE JOBS (2015) 2) MEET DAVE (2008) 3) HALLOWEEN (1978) 4) THE SENTINEL (1977) 5) THE PEANUTS MOVIE (2015) 6) LITTLE NEMO IN SLUMBERLAND (1989) 7) A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN (1969) 8) THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY (1974) 9) SPECTRE (2015) 10) PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975) 11) OUR BRAND IS CRISIS (2015) 12) OSS 117: LOST IN RIO (2009) 13) THE LEOPARD MAN/THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943) (also the Daily Double) 14)THE BEYOND (1981) 15) DEADLY BLESSING (1981) 16) THE RAID: REDEMPTION (2011) 17) STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN & LE MANS (2015) 18) THE BIG EASY (1988) 19) PREDESTINATION (2014) 20) THE INTOUCHABLES (2011) 21) DEAD OF NIGHT (1945) 22) THE FLY/RETURN OF THE FLY (58/59) 23) LAST DAYS OF CONEY ISLAND (2015) 24) JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS (2015) (Songs: Duke Ellington's "Jubilee Stomp" and The Misfits' "Return of the Fly")
So, let's get back to what we love talking about - MOVICINEFILMOGRAPHIA! Sorry, we sometimes do make up words... First, the guys start off with a discussion on the 3rd (and final) Star Wars trailer for Episode 7, and other episodes and their special editions. Then it's time for the 2 minute movie mile, where Jack and Andrew talk about the films they've seen in the past two weeks - some new releases from acclaimed/award-winning auteurs, horror movies that are obscure and well-regarded (and not), plus Andrew does a block of films directed by Luis Bunuel, and Jack looks at things wide-ranging as the final(?) Studio Ghibli feature and Roger Waters' Wall concert film. 2MMM starts at 11 minutes in: 1) CRIMSON PEAK (2015) 2) THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL (1962) 3) WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE (2015) 4) VIRIDIANA (1961) 5) THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE (1991) 6) THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1972) 7) THE NAME OF THE ROSE (1986) 8) THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE (1977) 9) THE WALK (2015) 10) SINGLE WHITE FEMALE (1992) 11) ROGER WATERS THE WALL (2015) 12) SOMETHING EVIL (1972) 13) CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED (1963) 14) DEAD SILENCE (2007) 15) A BUCKET OF BLOOD (1959) 16) BAGHEAD (2008) Songs: Duke Ellington "Jubilee Stomp" and Iron Maiden "Children of the Damned" (live)
LOTS of horror talked here, in large part by Jack, and ranging from new releases to classics (Karloff, Corman, Michael Powell and John Landis on this one) and obscurities by well-known directors, plus two documentaries and an entry from the good ol' folks from Tromaville, New Jersey. (Oh, and there's Belle de Jour as well - not a horror movie, but what can you do, it was in the block!) Jack and Andrew first talk about the fact that this is Columbus Day (that this was recorded on) and why there aren't more movies about this Columbus guy, then a brief discussion about a recent screening of Rifftrax's MIAMI CONNECTION (which they previously saw for 2MMM). Then on to the movies, with largely new titles and two action classics from John Woo. Stay tuned for part 2, with a block of HORROR MOVIES (It is October, duh). Starting at 08:46: THE MARTIAN - HARD BOILED - 99 HOMES - A BETTER TOMORROW - BRIDGE OF SPIES - IT'S ALIVE - BLACK MASS wagesofcinema@gmail.com
Jack and Andrew return, once again, NOT for the last time (far as we know, we don't control the sponsors…) Time for more movie talk, but before the movies that they saw this week, Jack brings up the latest sound-bytes that seem to be coming out of that fount of movie-geekdom, Quentin Tarantino, and his comments about streaming and taping from TV on VHS in ‘I Lost it at the Video Store'. The 2-Minute Movie-Mile this week, meanwhile (starting at 13:35 in), is once again an eclectic mixture – you want em, we got em, folks: new releases, documentaries, horror films by a late (great?) master, horror movies that are actually comedies, animated films that changed the medium forever, and how about some Philip Glass and AC/DC composed films while we're at it? 2MMM: SICARIO – THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (72) – ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTILD STORY OF CANNON FILMS – THE HILLS HAVE EYES (77) – THE KILLING FIELDS – GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES – WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS – THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED – (Jacks marathon: 31:57) WHIRLPOOL – WHISPER OF THE HEART – KOYAANISQATSI – AC/DC: LET THERE BE ROCK – THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS visit us on iTunes, Soundcloud and now, a new connection, Stitcher.com ! wagesofcinema@gmail.com
Snakes. Monkey Brains. Giant Bugs. Crocodiles. Rats. Sean Connery. What do all these things have in common? They were all on the set for director Steven Spielberg's constant, undivided amusement! (Well, duh). In this mini-episode, culled from the 2MMM, Jack and Andrew see all three films from when Spielberg and Lucas decided to get together and play in 1930's Saturday matinee/James Bond style sandbox. Do the films hold up? RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981) INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) Clip from ‘Raiders' trailer
Before the intrepid hosts get into the Two-Minute Movie-Mile, Andrew is upset about Pacific Rim 2 being shelved indefinitely, and Jack recounts his trip to Retro Con in Oaks, PA, and his purchase of an unusual NES (movie-related) game from 1986. Then, the movies on tap for this week are… dominated by Jack, who else, but there's some good talk for animation (80's robot action, Spielberg mo-cap and Disney classics abound), a faith-based nightmare, and movies featuring Oscar-winners, tragic deaths and sexual encounters of the bizarre and strange kind. Also, Jack may have discovered the black Klaus Kinski in an otherwise forgettable would-be Lifetime movie, and Andrew related Colin Trevorrow's first film to a 40's horror classic. (Jack's ‘Marathon' starts 28:28) MOVIES (2MMM, starts 14:14 in): THE VISIT – JODOROWSKY'S DUNE – THE TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE – THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN – RICKI AND THE FLASH – SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED – DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL – THE PERFECT GUY – GOD'S NOT DEAD – THE LION IN WINTER – THE SWEET HEREAFTER – DISNEY'S BEAUTY & THE BEAST – TOY STORY contact us at wagesofcinema@gmail.com Theme is “Jubillee Stomp” by Duke Ellington Clip is from Boogie Nights
This week, Andrew saw.... almost nothing. This leaves Jack to carry nearly all of the load of the 2 Minute Movie Mile, and he saw a bunch of new releases and a couple of classics. The two hosts come together to talk about a film they watched together: Walt Disney's first feature film (and the first ever in animation with synchronized sound). Movies: STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON - BOYZ N THE HOOD - THE END OF THE TOUR - SHAUN THE SHEEP - AMERICAN ULTRA - PAPILLON - CASINO JACK - GASLIGHT (1944) - MISTRESS AMERICA - SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS Email us at wagesofcinema@gmail.com facebook.com/wagesofcinema Twitter @JackGattanella Songs: Jubilee Stomp by Duke Ellington Heigh Ho by Tom Waits
PARENTAL ADVISORY NOTICE (fy) for Explicit Language... Check out the big-movie-watching brain on Andrew! This time, for the first time since the first Two-Minute-Movie-Mile, Andrew sees more movies than Jack, but altogether the movies discussed go from auteurist spectacles in blockbuster form (Coppola and Nolan) to animated films (Wes Anderson and Miyazaki). Before this, Jack and Andrew discuss the Fox's FAN4TASTIC fiasco, and the trailer for Tarantino's HATEFUL EIGHT. Films discussed: THE VANISHING (1988) - THE GIFT (2015) - FANTASTIC MR. FOX - THE DARK KNIGHT - RUSSIAN ARK - TRAINWRECK - THE ILLUSIONIST (2010) - HOW THE WEST WAS WON - PORCO ROSSO - THE BABADOOK - HARD CANDY - APOCALYPSE NOW (again, re: Episode 1) - PERSEPOLIS - PAPER TOWNS - (Andrew's Marathon): CORALINE - WATERSHIP DOWN - WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY - CLUELESS email: wagesofcinema@gmail.com theme song is Duke Ellington's "Jubilee Stomp", end song is "Ride of the Valkyries" by Wagner (both public domain/fair use)
This week, Jack and Andrew start off taking on a listener comment about the previous episode on movie scores (looking at you John Williams and Dvorak), and then go right into the movies the hosts saw, together and separate, ranging from Hollywood product, new the not-so-new, and some independent and documentary fare, too. Once again Jack hogs the mic, but only after the 34:15 mark into ‘Marathon' mode. As for the films Jack and Andrew saw together, it's both the highest and lowest of cinematic tastes… Two-Minute-Movie-Mile: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION – HOUSE OF WAX (1953) – CALIGULA – SOUTHPAW – THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED – THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT – FIRDAY THE 13th (2009) – IRRATIONAL MAN – PAPRIKA – DOLAN'S CADILLAC - WHILE WE'RE YOUNG – HOT GIRLS WANTED – TRICKED – DAYS OF THUNDER – 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN – BAD NEWS BEARS (2005) wagesofcinema@gmail.com facebook.com/wagesofcinema

After talking about a newscaster in 1982 ruining the end of a classic film, and what makes the hosts unnerved watching a movie, a bevvy of horror movies are discussed by Andrew (listen up MARIO BAVA fans!), while Jack checks out a slate of new (mostly independent) releases. After a brief discussion about whether or not Lebron James can act (based off of the trailer for TRAINWRECK of all things), and a few imitations (by email request!) it's Moooooovie time! Lots of movies, both new and classic, some hardcore auteurs to discuss (Herzog, Bergman, Dreyer, PT Anderson), including some tough 90's flicks, war movies (not of the conventional kind), and much much more. And what's that? Yeah, the new Pixar. Well, duh? The 2MMM: THE LOOK OF SILENCE (w THE ACT OF KILLING - the Daily Double) - THE THREE MUSKETEERS & THE FOUR MUSKETEERS - INSIDE OUT - THERE WILL BE BLOOD - LOVE & MERCY - THE COURT JESTER - SAFETY LAST! - A FEW GOOD MEN - JOE (2014) - LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL... We start off with a talk about the very departed James Horner (Aliens, Wrath of Khan, so many more). Then at around the 8 minute mark we get to talking about new/classic movies we've seen with two minutes a piece. We go across from new blockbusters to Harold Ramis comedies to Charles Laughton, to Bela Tarr, James Gunn and Satyajit Ray (the latter gets 4 mins). Jack, as usual, gets into marathon mode at the 28 minute mark. Episode 17 will be in part about what is fun, funny and exciting, and what is dark and depressing. All about the human condition as usual on the Wages of Cinema podcast! On the Two-Minute Movie Mile, where Jack and Andrew each get two minutes to talk about their recent movie-viewing experiences, we got all-time classics, another look at an experimental short, and that one movie The Departed was based on: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS - TOP SECRET - THE PEOPLE VS PAUL CRUMP - MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN - IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER - 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA - SECRETS & LIES - MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON (again) - INFERNAL AFFAIRS - GREAT EXPECTATIONS facebook.com/wagesofcinema
Jack may put a pox on the 2 minute movie mile (or Triple M for short) but he's going to do it anyway! Another day, another episode of the Wages of Cinema, and there's another boatload of classics and new films, ranging from the latest from George Clooney to a British classic with Alec Guinness, two by David Lynch and two by Thomas Vinterberg, and a claymation movie about... Another day, another time where Jack and Andrew talk about a whole swarth of movies. In this collection there's some new ones like Alex Garland's directing debut Ex Machina, and the latest from Quentin Dupiex called 'Reality'. A focus is on surreal movies, and we'll be getting into that in the main segment. And Jack sees an Iranian feminist vampire hipster spaghetti western shot in black and white. Whew! Our Daily Double this week are a TWO pack, with Jack and Andrew talking about surrealist shorts from the late 20's. MOVIES: EX MACHINA - BLOOD OF A POET - BELLE TOUJOURS - THE KARATE KID (2010) - A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT - ROBIN AND MARIAN - THE STING - THE STARFISH and THE SEASHELL AND THE CLERGYMAN (DAILY DOUBLE) - DAS BOOT - ERASERHEAD - WRONG - REALITY - MESHES OF AN AFTERNOON
This episode features GOD. And I don't just mean Mr. Alfred P Hitchcock (is his middle name 'P'? Who knows) LOTS of movies to talk about, but first Jack and Andrew spend the opening talking about the recent trailers for Star Wars & Batman v Superman - not so much the content as the entire air of expectations when it comes to such events. The movies in the Two-Minute Movie Mile (including a block from The Master of Suspense): THE HUSTLER - MARLEY & ME - FRIDAY - MALEFICENT - THE PHILADELPHIA STORY - THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST - TRUE STORY - ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES - UNFRIENDED - EXODUS: GODS & KINGS - THE BIRDS - THE PARADINE CASE - MURDER! - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (34) - I CONFESS
