"The End" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received a polarizing reception from audiences, but those who loved it really, really loved it. It's the first narrative feature film from Director Joshua Oppenheimer after his two Oscar-nominated documentary films, "The Act Of Killing" and "The Look Of Silence." Oppenheimer and star Michael Shannon were both kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the musical film, its themes, and resonance to an audience in today's political climate, which can be listened to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from NEON and is up for your consideration for the 97th Academy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! Social media has been full of smiling genocidiers lately, so it's a good time to revisit THE ACT OF KILLING (2012). Joshua Oppenheimer's experimental documentary about the legacy of the Indonesian mass killings asks: What would it take to prick a mass murderer's conscience? And how does violence linger in the human soul? PLUS: So, have you heard about this guy Joe Biden? Edwin name checks the Maysles' 1960's key work SALESMAN and Errol Morris's 1980's THE THIN BLUE LINE. Step into a world of unwatched movies with hosts Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler as they launch, "Never Did It." In their debut episode, Brad and Jake dive into the year 2013, exploring two outstanding and strikingly different films: "The Act of Killing" and "In a World." "The Act of Killing," directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, takes the center stage as Jake assigns this thought-provoking documentary to Brad. As they embark on a deeply unsettling journey, the hosts confront the chilling nature of power and its effects on society. Through the lens of Indonesian death squad leaders reenacting their crimes, they unravel the complexities of guilt, memory, and the lingering scars of history. Meanwhile, Brad introduces Jake to "In a World," a delightful comedy written and directed by Lake Bell. Exploring the world of voice-over artists, the film delves into themes of gender dynamics, family relationships, and the pursuit of dreams. As Jake discovers the nuances of this charming and witty indie gem, the hosts reflect on its refreshing take on the film industry and the underrepresented voices within it. In their inaugural episode, Brad and Jake set the stage for the podcast's unique concept. Their chemistry and passion for cinema shine through as they explore the artistic choices, social commentary, and critical acclaim surrounding "The Act of Killing" and "In a World." "Never Did It" promises to be a fun diversion of a podcast that unearths hidden cinematic gems, spanning from 1923 to the present. With their infectious enthusiasm and dedication to filling the gaps in their movie-watching journeys, Brad and Jake invite listeners on an exciting ride through the unexplored realms of film history. Whether you're a film aficionado or simply curious about the uncharted territories of cinema, this podcast offers an engaging exploration of forgotten and underappreciated films that deserve their time in the spotlight Please forgive the audio issues. They are resolved beginning with episode 3.

Today's Unwatchables takes our first dive into non-fiction with help from Jon Nix, documentary filmmaker and director of the new film Don't Fall in Love with Yourself. Joshua Oppenheimer's documentaries about the 1960's Indonesian mass killings are a singularly bizarre and uncomfortable spectacle: The Act of Killing allows the killers themselves to gleefully re-enact their atrocities, while The Look of Silence sets up direct confrontations between the perpetrators and a victim's brother. We discuss the ethical considerations of such a project, which film better illuminates its harrowing subject, and why genocidal killers are so into gaudy musical numbers. This world has always hated the people who follow Yahweh, the one true god. Throughout history, kings, rulers, countries, and many groups have been killing Jews with the intent of making them extinct. Pharo, Hamen, Herod, Nero, Stalin, Hitler, and others. Whatever the claimed reason, it all boils down to the fact that they followed Yahweh. This world hates Yahweh and wants to eliminate followers of Jesus. Sadly, this is not going to stop. In fact, it will most likely get worse. Jews and Christians will be targeted. The fact is, Christians are a lot more difficult to find than Jews. Being Jewish is an ethnicity as well as a religion. Therefore, eliminating Jews has historically been easier. Now that being Jewish or Christian is no longer tied to ethnicity, it will be a lot more difficult for those who are evil to kill Jews and Christians. Unfortunately, this means that those who are evil may simply start killing anyone and everyone in order to find those who they truly wish to eliminate. Lee and Lady Leah have a conversation covering their thoughts on director Joshua Oppenheimer's 2012 documentary "The Act of Killing", which is about the surviving Indonesian death-squad leaders, who were responsible for the deaths of over one million people from 1964-65. A lot of it is just the shock and anger both hosts felt while watching the brazen boasting by these monsters, but they do get into Oppenheimer's unique and non-confrontational way he goes about opening these people up and showing what they truly are, with their own words and shallow justifications. It's not a fun film to talk about, but we think the discussion about it was quite good at least. Listener feedback and what Lady Leah has watched as of late are also covered. One filmmaker got men who committed a genocide to play themselves in a movie about the genocide. In the mid-60s, a fascist regime in Indonesia enlisted several paramilitary militias and two-bit gangsters to murder millions of innocent people labeled as communists. The event was re-written in their history books as heroic, and all the men responsible for the genocide are still in charge and walking free. Nobody knew the truth about what really happened until documentary filmmaker, Joshua Oppenheimer, decided to make a documentary about it. But instead of interviewing victims, he interviewed the actual murderers responsible, and he discovered they were more than willing to share the explicit details of their war crimes. They'd even...dress up in costumes and re-enact the murders in a movie about the genocide where they play themselves. And thus, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, twin documentaries, were made and changed the country of Indonesia forever.

Joshua Oppenheimer isn't the only documentary filmmaker to aim his lens at the perpetrators of atrocities. But he may be the first to find such willing subjects. In his new film The Act of Killing, former Indonesian death squad members are only too pleased to describe their participation in the anti-communist purges of 1965-1966, when they helped butcher anywhere from 500,000 to more than a million people. So enthused were the aged genocidaires that they took an active role in Oppenheimer's project, re-enacting their youthful exploits for the camera. Werner Herzog, who served as executive producer with Errol Morris, says, “I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal, and frightening in at least a decade… it is unprecedented in the history of cinema.” Joshua Oppenheimer has been interviewed relentlessly as The Act of Killing debuts across the country, so when I got my chance, I tried to skip some of the compulsories and dig a little deeper into the details of the film and the queasy questions it raises.
