London-based film writer Esmé Holden joins us to discuss David Cronenberg's M. Butterfly. Based on the Tony Award-winning David Henry Hwang play - itself based on the the real life relationship between Bernard Boursicot and Shi Pei Pu, a Beijing opera singer - Cronenberg's film embraces the conventions of melodrama while thoughtfully exploring gender & queernes and weaving a complex romance tragically undone by the conventions and bigotries of the colonial-capitalist order. We begin by discussing the films explorations of gender, queerness, and transness, and how Cronenberg showcases an exceptionally forward-thinking and nuanced portrayal of these concepts in an era of films content with caricature, stereotype, and parody. Then, we consider how M. Butterfly presents a ground-zero for further explorations of the body, its presentation within societal perfrormance, and the fluidity of sexual expression that would become hallmarks of Cronenberg's signature style throughout the next few decades. Finally, explore the complicated ideological stictures that confine the film's protagonists and how capitalism's myopic definitions of identity continue to hinder self-actualization in its subjects.Follow Esmé Holden on Twitter. Benvenuti in America. "Maps to the Stars" ci trasporta in un vero e proprio cosmo popolato da stelle pronte a spegnersi.

Paul and Shawn are back with Jason to wrap up the main part of our look at all the feature films directed by David Cronenberg. Yes, we've finally reached the film that more or less prompted us to take on this effort, 2022's Crimes of the Future along with 2014's Maps to the Stars. This time we have a bit of diagreement about the films. Shawn really disliked Maps, while Jason thought it pretty spectacular on second watch... tune in to hear how that discussion goes and how they deliver a thoughtful pan to Crimes. And the next time Shawn and Paul join Jason, we'll be doing a ranking of Cronenberg's films, so keep watching this feed... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-sacks/message

They did an episode about Jon-Erik Hexum!(Whatever happened to A.J. Benza?)The poem by John Cooper Clarke that so moved Tim, “Evidently Chickentown,” may be heard here. Jen pointed out a mention of another poet, Anne Sexton, in the movie. Interestingly, while Sexton's daughter reported credibly in her memoir Looking For Mercy Street and elsewhere that her mother sexually abused her, Sexton's own memories of abuse have been called into question due to the methods her psychiatrist used to unearth them. However, Sexton's history of dissociation, psychotic breaks, and eventual suicide seem to point to some kind of trauma. Finally, if you missed our Crash episode, listen to it here! We were so excited after our Crimes of the Future episode we wanted to dive full force into Cronenberg with two classics: The Brood, a psychosexual, generational abuse body horror, and Maps to the Stars, a psychosexual, generational abuse body drama.
So we've come to the end of our cinematic journey through the world and warped mind of director David Cronenberg. Needless to say, we've seen some things. There were growths. There were fluids. There was genitalia growing out of places where there shouldn't be. But as we end our first season, it's time to take one last trip through the most absurdly bizarre and corruptly depraved places of all... Hollywood!!! It's David Cronenberg's 2014 dark show business satire Maps to the Stars. It doesn't matter if you're a deranged A-lister Julianne Moore, a hipster self-help guru John Cusack, or a disfigured, disturbed debutante Mia Wasikowska; all is not right in the state of Tinseltown. Join Nick and Chris for one last trip down Cronenberg Blvd., and stay tuned for news of what's next for Auteur Theory.
Third time's the charm! Today Charlie welcomes American Cinemateque envoy and all-around cinema savant Will Morris to talk about the overlooked late career of David Cronenberg. These more subdued, cerebral films have not gotten their proper due in relief to his much-loved earlier films. Why is that? What can we do to change it? They use Marshall McLuhan's The Medium is the Message as a critical tool to dissect Cronenberg's cinema, covering NAKED LUNCH, M. BUTTERFLY, CRASH, eXistenZ, SPIDER, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, EASTERN PROMISES, A DANGEROUS METHOD, COSMPOLIS, & MAPS TO THE STARS. (They also can't help but talk about some of the early ones, including his obscure drag race flick FAST COMPANY.) Join them as they diagnose of contagious case of Late Cinema. This episode is brought to you by Cinematic Void.

It’s a two-to-one split on David Cronenberg’s weird Hollywood gothic, Maps to the Stars. At the 1:14 mark, we let fly with a 3×3 about peeing scenes in movies. Next week: hmm, is anything even coming out next week? The post Qt3 Movie Podcast: Maps to the Stars appeared first on Quarter to Three.
On this week's episode we discuss David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars starring Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Sarah Gordon and Canberra's own Mia Wasikowska. Out now on Blu ray and DVD in Australia.
Hollywood's bad, m'kay? That is lesson learned number one from watching David Cronenberg's excoriation of Hollywood's (lack of) culture in "Maps to the Stars". Julianne Moore drew a lot of attention to the film for her viciously satirical portrait of an aging actress no longer in high demand. She is backed up by the formidable cast, which includes Mia Wasikowska and John Cusack. This a puzzling, yet fascinating film. Cronenberg used to be known as the Baron of Blood, and there is some blood in this film, but one wonders: did he just want to skewer the vapidity and self-indulgence of the L.A. filmmaking hub? Or is there more to this film? Phil liked it more than Andrew, but both grapple with what is the larger meaning of the film. For this week’s episode of The Close-Up, we’re proud to present an archival conversation with master director David Cronenberg, whose latest film, MAPS TO THE STARS, hits theaters this weekend. Back in 2005, the Film Society of Lincoln Center paid tribute to David Cronenberg leading up that year’s release of A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. That film went on to garner widespread critical acclaim with Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) praising its “explosive power and subversive wit,” and Manohla Dargis (New York Times) calling it a “mindblower.” For our 2005 tribute, The Film Society capped off a retrospective of the director’s work with “An Evening with David Cronenberg,” which featured a conversation with journalist David D’Arcy. The hour-plus discussion touched on many aspects of Cronenberg’s extensive career through the lens of the director’s rare moment of studio favor. “I’ve been getting a lot more offers from studios,” he said, “this will last about 10 minutes but I’m - for an older guy - kind of hot right now.” In addition to his dealings with studios, the director also speaks candidly about his relationship with critics, which he describes as very strange. Doch ist da wirklich was dran? Wird der Film dem Hype um Harry Potter wirklich gerecht? Wir haben uns diese Frage auch gestellt und haben uns die Geschichte mal genauer angesehen.
