This week we talk about the 1953 priestly thriller, I Confess. This is the first movie in our Hitchcock series that Bonnie had seen before, at least in part. It's the story of a priest who is suspected of a murder. He knows who the real killer, but the seal of the confessional prevents him from clearing his name. ***SPOILER ALERT*** We do talk about this movie in its entirety, so if you plan on watching it, we suggest you watch it before listening to our takes. Details: A Transatlantic Picture released February 12, 1953. Produced Hitchcock. Screenplay by George Tabori and William Archibald, based on the 1902 play Nos deux consciences by Paul Anthelme. Starring Montgomery Clift, Karl Malden, Anne Baxter, O. E. Hasse, and Brian Aherne. Cinematography by Robert Burks. Music by Dimitri Tiomkin. Ranking: 27 out of 52. Ranking movies is a reductive parlor game. It's also fun. And it's a good way to frame a discussion. We aggregated over 70 ranked lists from critics, fans, and magazines I Confess got 1,587 ranking points.

Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Isaiah 53: 10-11; Rs psalm 33: 4-5.18-19.20.22; Hebrews 4: 14-16; Mark 10: 35-45 JESUS IS THE MODEL FOR OUR OWN SACRIFICES   The theme for our meditation on this 29th Sunday in ordinary time is: Jesus is the Model for Our Own Sacrifices. The followers of Christ want to follow the example of their Teacher Jesus Christ in the way of sacrifice of oneself. We often show our love to those whom we love, for example through these following expressions: “For the sake of my love for you” or “I love you sincerely”, or “I sacrifice myself for you”.   When in a particular occasion you have experienced someone loving and caring for you, you realized and admitted how that person has loved you in such a special manner. Children always experience such love from their parents who don't get tired to sacrifice themselves to love them. Married couples always show in various ways how they love each other. A friend feels how love from the fellow friends keeps his days so wonderful. We are happy and grateful for such experiences that happen so common among us. We want to repay them with the same love and attention that we have received. Love gives love in return certainly creates such a life that we all want to happen in our lives.   Our readings on this Sunday elaborate how Jesus Christ is the Lord who had done a duty by being a sacrificed lamb to save us. He explained Himself one more time to His disciples and all of us about His willingness to offer Himself up for our sake. That manifestation clearly described His passion and death on the eve and the day of the Good Friday which we celebrate every year. When we hear and accept a manifestation of a brother, a sister, or a friend that he or she in good will and freedom want to do any kind of sacrifice for our sake, we are not only moved by that act, but we also are proud and happy for such a brave and determined act done.   Jesus Christ had proven that statement of His since more that 2000 years ago. The book of the Prophet Isaiah in our first reading today says that what had been done by Jesus, would be done in the same way by all generations after Him. Jesus Christ is the Frist Son of the Heavenly Father and all of us are sons and daughters who follow His example of practicing self-sacrifice. Jesus Christ is our Highest Priest in Heaven who bestows on us His Spirit, to make us remain in this way of sacrifice and cross.   For remaining in this path, the Letter to the Hebrews in our Second Reading today requires us to make our sacrifices to become our constant prayer and worship. Both in our daily confession of faith “I Confess” and in our practice of Christian life, we are encouraged to make the self-sacrifice our identity in the following of Jesus the Redeemer and our Lord. A Christian life that does not practice self-sacrifice and follow the path of Jesus is merely a futile life. Let us pray. In the name of the Father … O Lord Jesus, inflame our spirit of sacrifice that we may become like You in offering of ourselves with all our freedom and sincerity. Our Father … In the name of the Father …

Never trust the guy who makes the first toast at your anniversary party! Jeremy responds to Dave's inaugural choice of Hitchcock's I CONFESS with Brian De Palma's 1976 film OBSESSION, starring Cliff Robertson and Genevieve Bujold, with a treacherous frenemy turn from John Lithgow. Something is rotten in New Orleans in this genteely lurid steambath of loss and longing, as Robertson's Michael Courtland hopes to recapture the love of his life by wooing a younger woman whose uncanny resemblance to his dead wife alarms those closest to him. With Bujold playing both female roles, we're firmly in Hitchcock territory, with nods to VERTIGO piling up like stacks of cash in the ransom scheme that robbed our hero of his wife and daughter years before.  Dave unpacks the parallels between Hitchcock's masterpiece of fetishism and OBSESSION's layers of imitation, while Jeremy marvels at the artistic choices that made Roger Ebert enthusiastically describe this film as “overwrought melodrama” in which “excess is its own reward.” With Lithgow twanging his way through a series of white linen suits and languid, spiteful glances, Robertson's stoic and deeply tanned widower and his new paramour both find themselves retreading familiar ground as they approach the uncanny denouement.  Is it good-bad or bad-good? Can you blame a guy for believing the unlikeliest of coincidences? Don't you want to see what happens when he goes all in? Join us for our next episode where we uncover the image behind the image that is OBSESSION.  Music by Jeremy Donald. Find Dave here: https://linktr.ee/davedwelling

Here we go…it's our first episode! Sure, Jeremy's seen the big Hitchcock movies like REAR WINDOW and VERTIGO, and he even has a couple of black and white favorites (SHADOW OF A DOUBT and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN). But what will he make of a lesser Hitchcock film? This month we take on Dave's pick, the underappreciated and now relatively forgotten 1953 film I CONFESS, starring Montgomery Clift. Clift stars as Father Michael Logan, a Quebec City priest whose vows prevent him from revealing the identity of a murderer, even when he himself becomes the prime suspect of the investigation. What is this movie? Canadian cozy mystery? Location-heavy quasi-noir?  Hitchcock's love letter to Catholicism in the form of a risqué morality play?  Dave and Jeremy talk about mood and style, the ethical dilemma at the heart of the movie, and weigh in on that burning question: was Montgomery Clift the original “hot priest?” Thank you for listening! Please subscribe, leave a rating or review, and share this show with your friends. We'll be back next month with Jeremy's reply. Music by Jeremy Donald. Hitchcock in Quebec! "I Confess" stars Method actor Montgomery Clift in one of his most restrained performances as a handsome, innocent priest accused of murder. The most overtly "Catholic" of Hitch's movies, "I Confess" is also one of the lesser appreciated gems in the director's stellar 1950s output. Join us as we explore the movie and its Holocaust undertones with our special guest James Bogdanski who teaches film at Long Beach City College and El Camino College in southern California.

Welcome. You're listening to Reel Charlie Speaks, an LGBTQ podcast spin-off of the film and television review blog, Reel Charlie looking at movies and TV from a gay male perspective since 2009. I'm your host, Philip Bahr. Each month I select a classic queer film, television series, or creator. I talk about how the subject spoke to me when I first discovered it years ago, and how its stood the test of time. In episode 10 I explore two classic films from the master, Alfred Hitchcock. First up, Rope (1948), followed by Strangers on a Train (1951). Both films boast lesbian and gay writers, both star bisexual actor Farley Granger, and both feature queer male relationships during a time when Hollywood was contained by the Hays Code. Currently the films are available to stream on various platforms for a rental fee and on disk from your local library. Perfect reason to hold on to your disk player. Corrections: Not sure why I kept wanting to say Bruner instead of Bruno. I lived in New York City during the 1990's, not the 2000's. After leaving Ben in suspense on how it ends, he shares his personal experience of being on the receiving end of God's loving mercy.Fun Fact: This was not Alfred Hitchcock's first film; it was, in fact, his 43rd, including his lost films early in his career. I Confess was in pre-production longer than any of his films, with 12 writers working on the script over the course of 8 years. It was evidently a favorite of French New Wave filmmakers.About the ShowEchoes of Eternity is a podcast focused on fostering discussion about modern popular fiction in a way that puts us in touch with our deepest longings and how they direct our hearts to God. 1st reading is delivered by Irene Asterina, 2nd reading is delivered by Erik Stedy from Saint John Bosco Church in Jakarta, Indonesia, Gospel reading and meditation are delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Community in Labuan Bajo Flores, Indonesia. Isaiah 53: 10-11; Rs psalm 33: 4-5.18-19.20.22; Hebrews 4: 14-16; Mark 10: 35-45. JESUS IS THE MODEL FOR OUR OWN SACRIFICES The theme for our meditation on this 29th Sunday in ordinary time is: Jesus is the Model for Our Own Sacrifices. That manifestation clearly described His passion and death on the eve and the day of the Good Friday which we celerate every year. When we hear and accept a manifestation of a brother, a sister, or a firend that he or she in good will and freedom want to do any kind of sacrifice for our sake, we are not only moved by that act, but we also are proud and happy for such a brave and determined act done. In the name of the Father … O Lord Jesus, inflame our spirit of sacrfice that we may become like You in offering of ourselves with all our freedom and sincerity. Our Father … In the name of the Father … --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/media-la-porta/message

Being Eve - Loving, Living and Thriving without Losing the Authentic you!

What's up, Squad! Welcome back to part two of Buried Treasure and I'm your host, Casey Alexis! Before we get into it... In part one, we focused on the internal factors on unearthing our treasures but in this episode, we'll go deeper and talk about the external factors (the world around us) To start off... Every believer is given a responsibility by God to go out and spread the gospel. You can do this based on your talents/gifts/abilities given to you by God! You are the living and breathing vessel of the gospel and the word is made flesh in you! Just like Christ, the word was made flesh in Him! In addition to that... You are encouraged to go out and preach the gospel, but the most important thing is to show God through your Actions. Are you a doer of God's word? As firm believers, God is looking for us to be lighthouses! Glowing to the world in the midst of all the darkness, and guiding the people back to Christ! Matthew 2:1-12... The three kings followed the star (the light guided them) at night to Bethlehem to go see baby Jesus! Matthew 25:1-13; The Parable of the 5 Virgins In the NIGHT (Darkness), the trumpets were blown to announce the arrival of the groom. The wise virgins had their lamps (LIGHT) and they got to enter the banquet because THEY WERE PREPARED! Finally... Learn to unearth your treasures because... How can you walk fully in your God-given mission while still burying your treasure? This episode focuses on two movies whose star characters are men of the cloth, but who experience inspirational and terrifying personal challenges that will excite all audiences. We first discuss The Keys of the Kingdom, one of Gregory Peck's earliest starring roles and which earned him an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a Scottish missionary in China. Next we examine Alfred Hitchcock's stirring suspense movie I Confess. It features Montgomery Clift as a priest who when hearing a parishioner's confession finds out that he is a murderer. Clift is bound by his priesthood to preserve the seal of confession, even when the police begin to suspect him of the murder of which he knows the culprit but is bound by sacred law to not reveal. We would like to give a special thanks to Leonard Cooke (Diploma of Theology) for his providing consultation on Canon law concerning the sacrament of confession.

God wants relationship with us. And despite how our actions and attitudes separate us from God, God has offered us the way to that relationship through Jesus. We can walk with Him. Or Not. However, if we say that we don't have sin (never mess up), we are deceiving ourself about our own nature, our own possibilities, and our own needs. We are not living and walking in the light or the truth. But God promises to forgive us and cleanse us upon confession—confession of our condition and of the results of that condition. Confessing our sins brings us out of the darkness of the world and into the light. #IConfess #messiahyl

Rabbi Kivelevitz questions Rabbi Kolakowski as to the number of cases where he has heard the imprisoned person claim that he was completely innocent. To Kivelevitz's surprise, Kolokowski responds that only one inmate that he has served, has stated that that the crime he was purported to have committed was a complete fiction.Kolakowski recounts the background and his interactions with a well known Rabbi who was convicted in 2009 of transporting a minor in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in criminal sexual activity and for engaging in sexual conduct with a minor. The pair recount a number of famous Jewish heroes ,patriarchs and martyrs who have been falsely accused, imprisoned and subject to suffering.(Avraham Avinu ,Yosef HaTzadik ,Rav Schneur Zalman of Liadi, Colonel Alfred Dreyfus,Leo Frank)Y.K.'s Not quite Innocent/Not really guilty Movie and TV recommendations are Edward G. Ulmer's noir-classic, Detour ,Vincent Price's first star turn, The Invisible Man Returns, and the first season Simpsons episode Krusty Gets Busted .A.K.'s list of wrongly accused and imprisoned films are drawn primarily from the work of Alfred Hitchcock, who uses the inscrutable oppressive hand of fate as a theme throughout his career. A.K. suggests strongly to savor, The 39 Steps, Saboteur, I Confess,The Wrong Man, and especially the films that were the apex of Hitchcock's career, North By Northwest, and The Birds. Another treat that features a man imprisoned wrongly ,is Preston Sturges' hilarious ,moving, masterpiece, Sullivan's Travels, with its strikingly poignant climax that was a milestone for a dignified representation of African-Americans on screen. For listeners who want to hear a ballad on the theme of the authorities rush to judge and convict and unfair treatment of people of color ,A.K. offers Bob Dylan's, The Hurricane.Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. The institution is a medium security prison facility housing 1,100 inmates and a 120 bed Forensic Treatment Center, which provides inpatient psychiatric treatment in a secure setting for adult male offenders.Kolakowski is the first Rabbi in the history of the Commonwealth to serve as head chaplain in a state prison.Prior to his present position, he served pulpits and chaplaincy positions in Virginia and Upstate New York. The Rabbi has emerged as a talented speaker in areas of religion, politics, spirituality, popular culture, history, and interfaith affairs. He has created an extremely popular YouTube channel with thousands of followers.Kolakowski unashamedly recounts his personal history. While his mother was raised in a Modern Orthodox home in Queens, his father is a devout Roman Catholic. He had a bris in an Orthodox synagogue but was also baptized in a Catholic church. His maternal grandparents encouraged him to have a bar mitzvah in their Orthodox Shul which spurred the young Kolakowski to adopt a frum lifestyle. At eighteen, he spent a year in a Yeshiva in Yerushalayim, whose environs drew him into Hasidic practice and philosophy .Kolakowski went on to study for and receive semichah at Yeshiva Or Kedoshim Biala in Brooklyn. He recognized the need to obtain a B.A. in psychology from Lander College for Men .Hearing the call to become a communal leader, he matriculated to Touro College for a postgraduate certificate in Advanced Rabbinics and Synagogue Management in conjunction with the National Council of Young Israel and the Young Israel Council of Rabbis.Rabbi Kolakowski's English translation of sefer Seder HaYom by the late Biala Rebbe was published in 2006 in Israel to wide acclaim. He can be reached at josephkolakowski@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Holly Palmer talking about her life in music with David Eastaugh Palmer started playing live gigs during the period she lived in Boston. She particularly enjoyed stripped-down shows at small clubs, and she still loves intimate engagements offering the opportunity for spontaneous chemistry with the audience. Also during her time in Boston, Palmer began to seriously delve into songwriting, and landed a demo deal with Island Records. In 1999, David Bowie invited Palmer to sing background vocals on his album Hours; she was featured on the album-opening track "Thursday's Child." Palmer subsequently toured worldwide with Bowie and his band as a vocalist and percussionist throughout 1999–2000. After completing the Bowie tour in 2000, Palmer settled in Los Angeles, where her music publisher Marla McNally introduced her to Grammy-winning, Emmy and Tony-nominated composer Allee Willis (whose songwriting credits include Earth Wind & Fire's "Boogie Wonderland" and "September", Broadway's "The Color Purple", "I'll Be There for You (Theme from Friends)", etc.). They began a songwriting collaboration, at the time primarily focused on songs for what would be Palmer's next solo album, I Confess. Palmer made a new deal with Tom Whalley and Jeff Ayeroff, the new heads of Warner Bros. for the album's release but, after completing the album, once again, she and the label saw things differently and went their separate ways. This time, Palmer was able to take the masters for both Tender Hooks and I Confess with her. I Confess album highlights included the single "Just So You Know", a Don Was-produced cover of the Holland-Dozier-Holland classic "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and Dr. Dre's mix of "Jumping Jack". Late, great keyboardist Billy Preston was spotlighted on the track "Down So Low", also featuring Joachim Cooder on drums. Holly launched her own label imprint, Bombshell Records, and independently released both I Confess and Tender Hooks on it in 2004.

Research is one of the keys to Alex Barclay’s incredible success, with ideas developing from chance conversations with experts. Sam Blake quizzes her on her unique process, character building and how she tackled her first stand alone. Finding out how she writes and why isolation is so important to her,  Alex Barclay is a former Irish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland) journalist turned crime (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_fiction) writer who was the first Irish female crime writer to get a significant deal that spawned No 1 bestsellers in multiple territories, with her debut novel Darkhouse. Darkhouse was the first of two novels featuring NYPD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NYPD) detective Joe Lucchesi. The book, set in Texas, New York and County Waterford, achieved strong reviews and was translated into 18 languages. After two novels in the Joe Lucchesi series, Barclay created Ren Bryce series, a bipolar FBI detective who took her through six more books. She has also branched out into YA fantasy and more recently has written the standalone I Confess plus a new YA novel. Barclay studied journalism with French at Dublin City University (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_City_University) , graduating in 1996. Her course included a period of study in France, at Nanterre University (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanterre_University) in Paris (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris) , when she lived and worked part-time. Subsequently she also trained at the Gaiety School of Acting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaiety_School_of_Acting) , afterwards appearing, for example, on television with Podge and Rodge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podge_and_Rodge) . Barclay worked for magazines including U Magazine and the RTE Guide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTE_Guide) before turning to crime writing. Destination Murder: Alex Barclay and Lucy Foley with WC Ryan From a luxury inn on a remote west coast peninsula in Ireland, to a Scottish hunting lodge, these dark stories are told by two of crimes leading female voices. Chaired by WC Ryan, author of House of Ghosts, a man who knows a thing or two about dangerous, lonely places. Lucy Foley’s departure to the dark side is her fourth bestseller, and Alex Barclay, the first lady of Irish crime, brings us her first Irish set standalone in a gripping event that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Alex Barclay lives in County Cork, Ireland. She is the bestselling author of Darkhouse and The Caller, as well as the Ren Bryce series. Alex Barclay’s debut novel Darkhouse was a top ten bestseller in the UK, France and Germany, and a number one bestseller in Ireland. Her latest novel I Confess is out now. Lucy Foley studied English Literature at Durham and UCL universities. She then worked for several years as a fiction editor in the publishing industry – during which time she also wrote her debut, The Book of Lost and Found. The Hunting Party has been a bestselling sensation both in Ireland and the UK. Lucy now writes full-time, and is busy travelling (for research, naturally!) and working on her next novel. On this week’s episode Dakota Arsenault is joined by Zach Sokol, host of Radio Camp Half Blood a Percy Jackson read-a long podcast. The two talk about director Alfred Hitchcock one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. They talk about his legacy on cinema history and their favourite works by him. If you were to recommend a Hitchcock film to introduce someone to his work the guys have a few options. Zach rec’s The Birds or Psycho while Dakota suggests Rear Window. While breaking down Hitchcock’s films into tiers they try to make a Mount Rushmore of his work. They agree on Psycho and Vertigo while Dakota suggests Rebecca and Rear Window to round it out contrasting with Zach wants Strangers on a Train and The Lady Vanishes. Zach informs Dakota that a sequel to The Birds exists called The Birds II: Land’s End (“directed” by Alan Smithee like Zach assumed it was). Surprisingly Tippi Hedren, also in this sequel but not as the same character. You can watch the original Psycho trailer where Hitchcock gives the audience a tour of the Bates Motel HERE. In a fun game of over rated/under rated the named some other picks. Dakota- Over rated: Notorious and The Birds Under rated: The Wrong Man and I Confess! On this month's episode of Trad Reviews, it's all about some old and new "classics" today at TradReviews. We will discuss Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson's famous novel Lord of the World, Alfred Hitchcock's film I Confess, and the classic game of chess. If you have not read Msgr. Benson's works, this show will be a worthy primer into his most famous novel, one that if read through the eyes of the faith, provides a sobering parallel to the world in which we live today and a very plausible scenario for the rise of the antichrist. We will take a look into Hitchcock the director, his style, his vision for bringing to the screen a story in a distinctly unique manner and what he provided to the viewer. Host Stephen Heiner will talk about the importance of these topics and what should be kept in mind when reading, viewing, or playing. Join us on this episode of Trad Reviews. Far Side of the moon spelas fortfarande, sjutton år efter premiären. Hollywood Radio Theater (Lux Radio Theater) strove to feature as many of the original stars of the original stage and film productions as possible, usually paying them $5,000 an appearance to do the show. It was when sponsor Lever Brothers (who made Lux soap and detergent) moved the show from New York to Hollywood in 1936 that it eased back from adapting stage shows and toward adaptations of films. The first Lux film adaptation was The Legionnaire and the Lady, with Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable, based on the film Morocco.
