Reading I1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23In those days, Saul went down to the desert of Ziphwith three thousand picked men of Israel,to search for David in the desert of Ziph.So David and Abishai went among Saul's soldiers by nightand found Saul lying asleep within the barricade, with his spear thrust into the ground at his headand Abner and his men sleeping around him.Abishai whispered to David:“God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day.Let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear;I will not need a second thrust!”But David said to Abishai, “Do not harm him,for who can lay hands on the LORD's anointed and remain unpunished?”So David took the spear and the water jug from their place at Saul's head, and they got away without anyone's seeing or knowing or awakening. All remained asleep, because the LORD had put them into a deep slumber.Going across to an opposite slope,David stood on a remote hilltopat a great distance from Abner, son of Ner, and the troops. He said: “Here is the king's spear.Let an attendant come over to get it.The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness.Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp,I would not harm the LORD's anointed.”Reading II1 Corinthians 15:45-49Brothers and sisters:It is written, The first man, Adam, became a living being, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual was not first;rather the natural and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, earthly;the second man, from heaven. As was the earthly one, so also are the earthly, and as is the heavenly one, so also are the heavenly.Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one,we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one.GospelLuke 6:27-38Jesus said to his disciples:“To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak,do not withhold even your tunic.Give to everyone who asks of you,and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.Do to others as you would have them do to you.For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?Even sinners do the same.If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back;then your reward will be greatand you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.“Stop judging and you will not be judged.Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.Forgive and you will be forgiven.Give, and gifts will be given to you;a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.For the measure with which you measurewill in return be measured out to you.”

To the man who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek too; to the man who takes your cloak from you, do not refuse your tunic. For even sinners do that much. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.Instead, love your enemies and do good, and lend without any hope of return. “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” - Luke 6:38Jesus' words in the Sermon on the Plain are a reminder that we should look for ways to be generous with all aspects of our finances, including investments. Brian Mumbert is here today to share some helpful ideas.Brian Mumbert is Vice President and Regional Sales Executive at Timothy Plan, an underwriter of Faith & Finance.Dispelling the Myth: Performance vs. ValuesA common misconception in Faith-Based Investing is that investors must compromise financial performance to adhere to their values. Since the inception of Faith-Based Investing in 1994, the industry has made tremendous strides. What started with limited resources and headwinds has now evolved into a robust market with proven fund management, strong fundamentals, and competitive returns. Today, investors can achieve great risk-adjusted returns while staying true to their faith-based principles. Many investors have questions about whether they should tithe off their investment gains. In Luke 12, Jesus instructs us to store treasures in heaven where they cannot decay or be stolen. Additionally, 2 Corinthians 5:1-2 reminds believers that this world is not our home, and we are merely stewards of God's resources. Unfortunately, statistics show that the average American earning over $150,000 annually gives only 1.7% of their income, with Christians slightly higher at 2.5%. Tithing on investment gains is an opportunity to demonstrate faithfulness and generosity.Timothy Plan's Commitment to TithingTimothy Plan leads by example, tithing off the revenue it receives from mutual funds. The company sees this as an act of obedience and stewardship, using their resources to support causes that align with their mission. From funding crisis pregnancy centers to promoting faith-based media and supporting biblical entrepreneurs in underprivileged areas, Timothy Plan goes beyond just making money for investors—they are actively contributing to kingdom work. When it comes to deciding where to allocate their charitable contributions, Timothy Plan follows a thoughtful approach. They look at “the other side of the screen,” meaning they support organizations that counteract the very issues they stand against. For example, as a pro-life, pro-family investment firm, they support crisis pregnancy centers and organizations like Movie Guide, which advocate for family-friendly entertainment in Hollywood. Their impact extends locally in Orlando, Florida, and globally across the world.Looking Ahead: What's New at Timothy PlanWith new seasons ahead for the country, faith-based investing remains a powerful tool to influence culture and financial stewardship. For those interested in aligning their investments with their values and making an impact through Faith-Based Investing, Timothy Plan offers a variety of investment options. Read Online“That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called  ‘Lord' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Luke 20:37–38Jesus gives this response to some of the Sadducees who question Him about the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection of the body, whereas the Pharisees did. Thus, the Sadducees asked Jesus about the resurrection of the body using an almost unheard of example. They refer to the levirate law found in Deuteronomy 25:5ff which states that if a married man dies before having children, the brother of that man must marry his wife and provide descendants for his brother. Thus, the Sadducees present the scenario where seven brothers die, each one subsequently taking the same wife. The question they posed was, “Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus answers by explaining that marriage is for this life, not the life to come at the resurrection. Therefore, none of the brothers will be married to her when they rise. Some spouses have a hard time with this teaching, in that they love their spouse and desire to remain married in Heaven and at the time of the final resurrection. For those who feel this way, rest assured that the bonds of love we form on earth will remain and even be strengthened in Heaven. And when the end of the world comes and all of our bodies rise and are reunited with our souls, those bonds of love will remain stronger than ever. However, marriage, in the earthly sense, will be no more. It will be replaced by the pure love of the new life to come. This teaching gives us reason to ponder further the beautiful teaching of our Lord about His return in glory and, as we say in the Creed, “the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” We profess this belief every Sunday at Mass. But for many, it can be hard to understand. So what do we actually believe? Simply put, we believe that when we die, our body is “laid to rest,” but our soul enters a moment of particular judgment. Those who remain in mortal sin are eternally separated from God. But those who die in a state of grace will eternally live with God. Most people who die will most likely die with some lasting venial sins on their soul. Thus, Purgatory is the grace of final purification that the person's soul encounters upon death. Purgatory is simply the purifying love of God which has the effect of eliminating every last sin and imperfection, and every attachment to sin, so that the purified soul can see God face-to-face in Heaven. But it doesn't stop there. We also believe that at some definitive time in world history, Jesus will return to earth and transform it. This is His Final Judgment. At that time, every body will rise, and we will live eternally as we were intended to live: body and soul united as one. Those souls who are in mortal sin will also be reunited with their bodies, but their body and soul will live separated from God forever. Thankfully, those who are in a state of grace and have endured their final purification will be resurrected and share in the new Heavens and new Earth forever, body and soul as God intended. Reflect, today, upon this glorious teaching of our Lord that you profess faith in every time you pray the Creed. Keeping your eyes on Heaven and, especially, on the final and glorious resurrected state in which you will live in the new Heaven and Earth must become your daily practice. The more we live with this holy expectation, the more we will live here and now as a time of preparation for this final existence. Build treasure now in anticipation of this glorious day and believe that it is the eternity to which you are called. My resurrected Lord, You now reign in Heaven, body and soul, in anticipation of the final and glorious resurrection of all the dead. May I always keep my eyes on this final goal of human life and do all that I can to prepare for this eternity of glory and love. Jesus, I trust in You.  Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

Mark 8:27-38Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?' And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.' He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?' Peter answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.'* And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.'He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel,* will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.' Recently, I read an article about the potential joys and troubles of traveling with others. One of the stories was about a man named Stephen Garrido, who took a trip with his girlfriend of a year, a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland. He had high hopes for the journey. But apparently, even Disney isn't always the happiest place on earth. Instead, it was a living nightmare Stephen said. He learned his girlfriend was much too messy for a small hotel room and worse, extremely rude to staff at the hotel and restaurants. She found out that Stephen snored like a blender full of marbles. The trip ended with her cursing at him profusely and the two split two weeks later. Getting an invitation or extending an invitation to travel with someone is a big deal. Mainly because I think traveling with someone is the best way to get to know them. The new experiences, stressors, and challenges reveal a new or different side of you and you see a new side revealed of someone else. So you are likely cautious when extending and accepting an invitation to travel.Jesus and his disciples traveled together a lot, especially in this part of the gospel of Mark. Just in the last two chapters, Jesus had been in the desert, then to Bethsaida, Over to gennesaret, On to Tyre, then Decapolis, Down to Dalmanutha, and finally back to Bethsaida. I'd say from all of that, the disciples and Jesus likely learned a thing or two about another from all this travel. You'd think they knew each other pretty well at this point, but maybe not…In today's story, Jesus and the disciples are again traveling, this time from Bethsaida to Caesarea Philippi. And as they were walking, Jesus threw out a question, “who do people say that I am”. It doesn't seem to have much context, but if we look back a few verses, Jesus was just berating the disciples for not knowing who he was: “do you still not understand? He said. Are your hearts hardened, do you have eyes and ears and yet you don't get it? Do you not remember all that I have done? Maybe he was concerned others were just as confused as his disciples. They responded to the question with logical answers, but none were the answer Jesus had hoped for. “Who do you all say that I am” asking the disciples, thinking maybe after all the traveling and that stern talking to, they had figured it out. And Peter, acting as the spokesperson for all the disciples, says “you are the Messiah.”! Ah there it is! The right answer. The disciples or at least Peters has it figured out, he knows who Jesus is. The Messiah, the Christ, the anointed one. This is the first time in the entire gospel, more than two thirds of the way through, that someone calls Jesus the Messiah, that someone seemingly understands who he is. And it's that the best feeling, to be understood, for others to truly know who you are…But immediately there was a problem. The messiah Peter had envisioned was not the same Messiah that Jesus would be. Peter had created this image, this idea, or ideal, of what the messiah would be and do, act and look like. And that wasn't something only Peter had done… Many Jews expected and longed for a Messiah to return and restore Israel to all its glory. How that would happen or the kind of messiah the people hoped for, varied. So when Jesus started revealing the kind of Messiah he would be and what would happen to him, well Peter just couldn't take it. That's not what he expected the messiah to be. To be fair, we don't know exactly what Peter hoped for, but we do know it wasn't a Messiah who would suffer, get rejected by the religious leaders, and then be killed. That much we know because Peter pulled Jesus to the side and let him know just how wrong he was. But Peter's expectations, whatever they were, were wrong or misguided or incomplete. And apparently not in a small way, since Jesus felt the need to call Peter satan, the tempter, and ordered him to turn around and get behind Jesus, because clearly Peter didn't know what he was talking about. We do the same thing, no? We, too, create an ideal image of our Messiah, an idea of who Jesus should be and how he should act. We want Jesus to be a judge who condemns all those we think are wrong and who models only what we think is right. We want Jesus to be our grant maker, who will give us the health and wealth we've wished for if we just lift up the right prayers. We want Jesus to be a republican or a democrat, that way we can say “my preferred politician is more Christ like” when really we mean they are more like the Christ we have created for ourselves.Yet, Jesus is rarely what we want him to be. And like Peter, we get disappointed, upset, and ultimately let down by this. The truth is our partner, our friends, siblings, parents, kids and coworkers, even our Messiah will never live up to or fulfill the image of who we want them to be. If we hold them to some version we've made up for them, they will inevitably leave us angry, wishing they were more like this or that, and the relationship will suffer if not cease. A deeper, more fruitful relationship can only occur when one sees the other person for who they really are and not who they wished them to be, Jesus included. Because Jesus isn't always the messiah we want, but he is always the messiah we need. We need a messiah who meets us in our suffering. A messiah who knows what it's like to face rejection and heartache and despair and share in that with us. A messiah who comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable. A messiah who willingly lays down his life in order to give you a new one, full of grace and forgiveness and love. I find great comfort in knowing that Peter didn't fully understand Jesus. This man who had traveled all over Judea, who had seen the miracles, who used the right words, but in many ways still got it wrong. What I find even more comforting is that he still got the invitation to follow Jesus. We don't have to have it all right, we don't have to understand everything about God or Jesus or the faith we claim. We can have doubts and questions and even wrong ideas about all of it. The good news is that the invitation still stands! Jesus extends the invitation to follow him, to travel with him regardless of what we have wrong, or if we feel our faith isn't deep enough or strong enough or sincere enough. He doesn't say you need to have this understanding, or you have to know this, or even believe these things about him. In fact, it is because Peter, the disciples, and the crowd don't have it all figured out that Jesus invites them in the first place. Unlike you and me, Jesus isn't cautious about who he invites because Jesus knows that if you really want to get to know him, you have to travel with him. I hope we model this well here at Cross of Grace, especially on days like today, when we welcome new Partners in Mission. Hopefully, we have been clear, you don't have to have it all figured out, or believe in every single thing we do, or know all the answers. We don't! Because becoming a Partner in Mission isn't about any of that.Being a Partner in Mission is about accepting the invitation to travel with us. Today you are saying I am willing to take this journey of faith alongside you. And in return we get to say, Thanks be to God. We're so glad you're here because we are in for the trip of a lifetime. We will undoubtedly learn new things about one another, we won't get it all figured out, but we'll ask questions and support each other along the way. And we'll help each other aside the idea of the messiah we want and together we'll follow the messiah we need. Amen

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/amigocatolico/message

GospelJOHN 13:21-33, 36-3821When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, "Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."22The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; 24so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks." 25So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, he said to him, "Lord, who is it?" 26Jesus answered, "It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly." 28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the feast"; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30So, after receiving the morsel, he immediately went out; and it was night. 31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; 32if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going you cannot come.' 36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward." 37Peter said to him, "Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times.

Então, a febre desapareceu; e ela começou a servi-los. “That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called ‘Lord' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Luke 20:37–38Jesus gives this response to some of the Sadducees who question Him about the resurrection of the dead. – Palavra do Senhor. E o anjo desapareceu. – Palavra do Senhor. Salmo Responsorial: Tb 13 Bendito seja Deus, que vive eternamente! 1. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:46–52 (ESV) — 46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

– Palavra do Senhor. / Assim mostrou misericórdia a nossos pais, / recordando a sua santa Aliança. – R. 3.

John 1 (ESV) 1In the beginning wasthe Word, andthe Word was with God, andthe Word was God.2He was in the beginning with God.3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.4In him was life,[a]andthe life was the light of men.5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6There was a mansent from God, whose name wasJohn.7He came as awitness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yetthe world did not know him.11He came tohis own,[b]andhis own people[c]did not receive him.12But to all who did receive him,who believed in his name,he gave the rightto becomechildren of God,13whowere born, not of bloodnor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14Andthe Wordbecame flesh anddwelt among us,and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[d]from the Father, full ofgrace andtruth.15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said,He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.)16For fromhis fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[e]17Forthe law was given through Moses;grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18No one has ever seen God;the only God,[f]who is at the Father's side,[g]he has made him known. The Testimony of John the Baptist 19And this is thetestimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,Who are you?20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.21And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are youthe Prophet? And he answered, No.22So they said to him, Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?23He said, I amthe voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight[h]the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. 24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)25They asked him,Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?26John answered them,I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,27evenhe who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.28These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. Behold, the Lamb of God 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, whotakes away the sinof the world!30This is he of whom I said,After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.31I myself did not know him, butfor this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.32And Johnbore witness:I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, andit remained on him.33I myself did not know him, buthe who sent me to baptizewith water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizeswith the Holy Spirit.34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[i]of God. Jesus Calls the First Disciples 35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold, the Lamb of God!37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.38Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them,What are you seeking? And they said to him,Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying?39He said to them,Come and you will see.So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.[j]40One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus[k]was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, We have foundthe Messiah (which means Christ).42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,You are Simon the son ofJohn. You shall be calledCephas(which meansPeter[l]). Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael 43The next day Jesus decidedto go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,Follow me.44NowPhilip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.45Philip foundNathanael and said to him, We have found him of whomMoses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesusof Nazareth, the son of Joseph.46Nathanael said to him,Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,Behold,an Israelite indeed,in whom there is no deceit!48Nathanael said to him, Howdo you know me? Jesus answered him,Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.49Nathanael answered him,Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are theKing of Israel!50Jesus answered him,Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.51And he said to him,Truly, truly, I say to you,[m]you will seeheaven opened, andthe angels of God ascending and descending onthe Son of Man.

31When he had gone out, Jesus said,Now is the Son of Man glorified, andGod is glorified in him.32If God is glorified in him,God will also glorify him in himself, andglorify him at once.33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and justas I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, Where I am going you cannot come.34A new commandmentI give to you, that you love one another:just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. 36Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going?Jesus answered him,Where I am goingyou cannot follow me now,but you will follow afterward.37Peter said to him, Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.38Jesus answered,Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you,the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

Daily Lectionary: Job 20:1-23, 29; John 8:21-38Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin." (John 8:34)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Words of slavery are always the most optimistic. When there's no escape, you don't have to waste time hoping for something realistic. Addicts say things like, "I'm fine. It's okay. I have a plan,"  all the while lying in a gutter and smiling about it. It's the ugly truth about the bondage of sin. The same kind of slavery happens under the Law in the name of religion. It doesn't look like it's the Law telling you what to do. It looks like it's you who can't keep from doing the stuff that's killing you. You can even dare to think that it's your job to fix it somehow. Those are the dreams that leave you wanting to love Jesus but hating yourself while looking for an excuse for everything you do that He says not to. When you can't describe yourself without balancing your accomplishments and failures on a lopsided hill, hoping nobody notices, you know. Anyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. If your religion is just false optimism based on trying harder in the face of everything that hasn't worked yet, then Christianity has become a race towards not needing God. And that's not working. It's just the bold dreams of another addict. That's not okay with the Son. He sets sinners free. He is bound to the Cross in their stead. He bears the weight of the bondage of sin. He dies for you, and your sins are forgiven. Now you are bound to the Cross, too. That's where the real freedom is. It isn't license to do whatever you want. It's hope in an escape so rooted in reality that they buried Him in a tomb and three days later He moved the rock so you'd see. Jesus rose from death. You are free, indeed. You are free from having to fix this. You are free from being known by what the Law would call you. You are free from excuses that hide from wrath. You are even free to love yourself as God first loved you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen."This is the Christ, our God Most High, Who hears your sad and bitter cry; He will Himself your Savior be From all your sins to set you free."
