Hannah Brinsden, head of policy and advocacy at the Food Foundation is with a panel from politics, policy, academia and investment to discuss what we need from the new government, including from the new food strategy and the mission boards, to really incentivize a healthier food system and ensure everyone can access and afford a healthy diet. The episode is part of our recipe for change campaign led by Sustain, The Food Foundation, Obesity Health Alliance, with a wider coalition of nearly 50 supporting organisations. The campaign is calling for the government to introduce a new tax on food companies to encourage them to improve the healthiness of the food they sell us and play their part in supporting our health. To discuss the opportunities of the new government and what is to come, Hannah is joined by Alison Tedstone, former Department of Health and Public Health England chief nutritionist; conservative peer, James Bethell; Adam Briggs from the Health Foundation and Antony Yousefian, a partner at The First Thirty Ventures. Yorta Yorta man Briggs is a real renaissance man. We may have met him first as an MC, but in the years since he's shown his creativity knows no bounds. He's an actor, a writer, a label head, an author, and one of the funniest people I know. Briggs grew up in Shepparton in regional Victoria, it's a big part of his identity. So when the opportunity came up for triple j and Double J to head to Shepp for a weeklong Takeover, Briggs immediately sprung to mind for a Take 5. Shepp is on the lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation, and home to the largest Indigenous population in regional Victoria. The Briggs family looms large in Shepp, and the opportunity to come back to Adam Briggs' hometown to hear about his foundations, was too good to miss. From Ice Cube to Ryuichi Sakamato, to The Simpsons, this is a beautiful capture of a true talent. Adam Briggs is the ultimate multi-tasker. As a solo artist and with A.B. Original he’s become one of Australia’s most respected rappers, but he’s also an actor, scriptwriter, children's book author and activist. As a student growing up in the regional Victorian town of Shepparton, though, he was told he’d never amount to anything. So how has this man who was told he had no prospects, who’s had to fight and claw for every opportunity, got to where he is today? That’s what we’re here to find out. More than a performer and an artist, Briggs has also become a role model for young Indigenous Australians, and he talks about coming to terms with that in this interview. He also discusses the backlash and abuse he’s been subjected to throughout his career, and the lessons he’s learned as he’s dealt with it.
The ultimate slashie joins us again on the podcast this week. Rapper / Actor / Comedy Writer and record label CEO, Adam Briggs. It's been 18 months since he last spoke to the Advocate, and in that time he's cut a new record and added Children's Author to the resume. Briggs talks to Clancy about the rapidly changing landscape of Australian music, his almost reluctant role as the media's go-to sound bite for all things Indigenous, and why Black Lives Matter isn't just an American movement. At the age of 9, Adam was told he would not live to see 18. Born a blue baby, he had over 60 operations growing up and grew so ill that he was confined to a wheelchair, with his heart working at a fraction of its capacity. A tragedy for another little boy and another family led to a successful heart transplant for Adam and following the operation and recovery, Adam discovered trail running a little later in life, throwing himself in head first to the Lakeland trails on his doorstep. In this conversation, we talk about the reality of growing up with serious health issues and how it has influenced his lens on life, as well as his journey to trail running and attempting the notorious Bob Graham round in the Lakes, a circumnavigation of 60 miles and 42 peaks. His trail adventures are depicted in the short film Life on the Fells, which you can find on You Tube. He had me giggling into the mic and was a joy to talk to. Please check out Life on the Fells and show Adam your love on social media.

Rapper, writer, actor and record label boss Adam Briggs knows how to get work, be heard, and get paid. In other words, he knows how to hustle. In the first episode of Pretty For An Aboriginal, Briggs, Nakkiah and Miranda give our listeners tips for cutting through the bullshit and getting ahead. When Briggs joined with fellow rapper Trials to record under the moniker A.B. Original, he thought it would be a career-ending project. Their music was political, urgent and unapologetically about black Australia. But they ended up winning, as Briggs says, “a plethora of awards”. Australia is built on the presumption of meritocracy and fairness, and that if you’re talented and work hard you’ll see your name in lights. Is Briggs the exception or the new rule?Music creditsA. B. Nakkiah Lui and Miranda Tapsell are set to rock traditional perceptions of Indigenous Australia and challenge rigid mindsets of what women of colour can and cannot do. In our eight episode first season, we'll talk honestly about relationships, weight, dick pics and being a boss in male-dominated industries, and unpack the pervasive influence of African American popular culture and politics on young black people in Australia. Our guests will include author Roxane Gay, Orange Is The New Black’s Yael Stone, rapper and TV writer Adam Briggs, Canadian Vice presenter and activist Sarain Carson Fox, and rising Australian actors Akar Das (Lion) and Blessing Mokgohloa (Spartacus), among others. When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn’t unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we’re diving deep into the super-specific with listener-requested discussions and interviews. In this double-length Microsode Cap is joined by THE ENTIRE CREW of Ghostbusters: Resurrection - Doug, Nina, Josh La Forge, Adam Briggs, John Poole, and Mike Wall. Their mission: to dig deep into their collective well of comic book fanaticism to share the comics they'd most love to see adapted on the big screen, but don't have a snowflake's chance in hell of being pulled off. What are the stories so crazy not even the Marvel Cinematic Universe would dare touch? What independent books would make killer features but Hollywood can't be trusted to adapt? What stories can exist only in the sequential art medium? And just how do those springs in Ranma 1/2 work, anyways? All this and more thanks to Joshua Westphal - the Nerdy Show fan who requested this topic.
