After 31 years as host of The Fifth Estate, plus another decade winning Emmys for CBS and NBC News, award-winning investigative journalist Bob McKeown is ready to retire. The Ottawa native never shied away from his assignments, especially when it came to reporting on football and head injuries. Murrow Award to have also won a Grey Cup.On this episode of brioux.tv: the podcast, the 74-year-old talks about how he lined up opposite the best the CFL and American college football had to offer. That he later went head-to-head with Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter and even Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom host Marlin Perkins only added to his legend. Then there's the time he got bitten by a shark! Sink your teeth into the whole story on this story-packed podcast episode. Johnston was governor general from October 2010 until last year.   The expenses of former governors general has caught the attention of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. But good news, they’ve changed the rules on knives in the aircraft cabin as of this summer.   If you so desire, you can legally carry through security a 6 cm (2.36”) long blade. That would at least allow you something such as a spyderco ambitious or an ESEE Candiru if you are traveling light and aren’t checking a bag for the trip.  Keep in mind the US still has a total ban on carry-on blades if you are traveling there. Here’s the link. http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/aviationsecurity/page-147.htm Hope that helps, Ian   Email From Todd Message Body:Hey guys.  Interesting show again.  It highlighted the contrast between the virtue signalling snow turd and our man Doug.  An interesting story for you. Michaëlle Jean becomes Canada’s first black governor general. Michaëlle Jean was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1957. When Jean was 10 years old, her father was arrested and tortured for his opposition to dictator François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. In 1968, shortly after his release, the family moved to Thetford Mines, Quebec, where Michaëlle was amazed to find snow. She was a brilliant student with an ability for languages. Her education at the University of Montreal, University of Perouse, University of Florence and the Catholic University of Milan gave her an upper hand in literature and languages. She is fluent in French, English, Italian, Spanish and Creole. During her studies, between 1979 and 1987, Jean worked with Quebec shelters for battered women. Wanting to get into journalism, she arrived back in Haiti in February 1986 just as Duvalier’s son, Baby Doc, and his corrupt regime were coming to an end. Her work on that story led her to join Radio-Canada in 1988 with a career in reporting and hosting many programs. In 1999 she moved over to the English network of CBC Newsworld to host the Passionate Eye and Rough Cuts. She returned to the French station with a higher profile, her own show and a trail of awards for her work. On August 4, 2005, the country discovered that yet another well-known broadcaster would become the next governor general of Canada (replacing former broadcaster Adrienne Clarkson and Roméo LeBlanc). In taking on the job of the queen’s representative, Jean became the first black woman to hold the post. To help with the transition to the official residence at Rideau Hall on September 27, 2005, Jean and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond agreed to their daughter’s one request: Marie-Eden would get a dog. Bonne lecture !

Chinese Immigration Act aimed at excluding Chinese immigrants gets royal nod. Since Chinese immigrants were seen as cheap labour, some politicians feared that if B.C. had too many of them, it could lower the living standards of non-Chinese Canadians. This is the logic by which the British Columbia legislature passed a number of anti-Chinese laws. Although it was not their jurisdiction, they also persuaded federal lawmakers to do the same. On June 30, 1923, the Chinese Immigration Act obtained royal assent, allowing the government to bar immigrants of Chinese descent from entering Canada. There were exemptions for merchants, diplomats, students and “special circumstances.” The latter allowed the parents of Adrienne Clarkson, Canada’s governor general from 1999 to 2005, to enter the country. Chinese Canadians referred to the legislation as the Chinese Exclusion Act, and to its day of implementation – July 1st – not as Canada’s birthday, but as Humiliation Day. While the racist “head tax” on Chinese immigrants had been lifted, the new legislation made it just as difficult to enter Canada. In 1947, after seeing the contribution Chinese Canadians made during World War II, the Canadian government repealed the Chinese Immigration Act. However, it was another two decades before skin colour no longer served as the government’s most important criteria for who could immigrate to Canada. We all remember the original 1967 Spider-Man cartoon (you know the one with the catchy theme song) but did you know that all the dialogue for the series was recorded in Toronto and Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is not only still around, but still acting at 86-years-young as the star of the new CBC Comedy web series, My 90-year-old Roommate? The legend comes by to spill secrets from the production of Spider-Man, including the fact that the voice acting company for all the original Marvel cartoons – Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Marvel Superheroes and more – was originally put together during the production of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation classic Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer where Paul starred as Hermey the Elf. Fast forward into the 2000s and Paul inadvertently found himself a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a live-action bit part in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and a prior relationship with star Edward Norton.
