On the heels of the by-election within British Columbia's riding of Burnaby South, a tale of two stories is being told. Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh secured a seat in the House of Commons, less than 2 years after winning his party's federal leadership. The other story being told is that of Maxime Bernier's People's Party of Canada. Despite it's maiden run, the party was able to garner 11% of the overall vote. Now, while that number doesn't seem all that big, it calls into question the bigger picture, that being could Bernier's party make things difficult for Andrew Scheer's Progressive Conservatives in the upcoming federal election?

The Roy Green Show - Maxime Bernier and his People's Party of Canada will face the electorate in Monday's federal byelections in Burnaby South, B.C. - as well as in byelections in Outremont, Quebec and York Simcoe, Ontario. This is the first A first real test for the People's Party of Canada, in its quest to form the national government in the October 21, federal election. PPC founder and leader Maxime Bernier Democracy Watch co-founder and law professor Duff Conacher continues to challenge the involvement of federal ethics commissioner Mario Dion in the Trudeau - Wilson-Raybould issue. Dion was appointed by the Trudeau cabinet and without engagement by the opposition parties as required by the Canada Parliament Act. Conacher write that "any committee of MPs is a Kangaroo Court, as they are all partisan.  Fully independent investigation needed."  He joins Roy to expand on this. Brian Peckford was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador for twelve years.  Mr. Peckford, in two blog pieces this week, is very critical of the use of the Clerk of the Privy Council to defend the federal government in the Trudeau/Wilson-Raybould/SNC-Lavalin/PMO issue and particularly the CBC for its reporting of the situation. The National Energy Board gave TMX the green light, and there is a developing scandal in the B.C. legislature. Roy brings on CKNW host Mike Smyth to cover these issues and address how the byelection in Surrey could decide the fate of NDP leadership. Jussie Smollett continues to insist he is telling the truth, that he is the victim of a racist attack, and he has hired a legal defense to take his "I'm innocent" position to court. Meanwhile Smollett has been charged criminally as the perpetrator of a racist hoax, and was directly challenged by the Chicago Police Commissioner. Many, like Democrat Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, tweeted their immediate support for Smollett and his claim. And some voices are saying Smollett's case should still be used to attract attention to the hate directed toward the LGBTQ and black communities. First Roy speaks with Dean of Helms School of Government and author Ron Miller, to get his perspective on how the Smollett case will affect those who want to step forward with their own - Guests: Maxime Bernier, Leader of the People's Party of Canada Duff Conacher, of DemocracyWatch.ca  Brian Peckford, former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador Mike Smyth. Canada's in a bad way with China. Has the media prepared us to deal with the growing superpower? With tensions rising, it may be more important than ever for Canadians to understand China. The Star Vancouver's deputy bureau chief Joanna Chiu takes us through various forces standing in the way -- a lack of understanding of Chinese media among English Canada, the misogynistic culture of the foreign press in Asia, and government control over Chinese social media, even in Canada.   Plus, she talks about her team's recent scoop that Karen Wang, the Liberal candidate for the Burnaby South byelection, attacked Jagmeet Singh for being of "Indian descent" on WeChat. Wang resigned after that story.   Joanna's study for PEN, Forbidden Feeds: Government Controls On Social Media In China.   Joanna's piece for Foreign Policy, "Sexpat Journalists Are Ruining Asia Coverage" Support CANADALAND: http://canadalandshow.com/join See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a riding with a large Chinese population, Wang made it clear that she was the only Chinese representitive, going against the "diversity is strength" liberal tagline that got Trudeau elected in the first place.

Karen Wang is not getting a second chance from the Federal Liberal Party. It has swiftly rejected her call to be reinstated as the party candidate in the upcoming Burnaby South byelection. Wang dropped out of the race yesterday after making online comments that singled out the ethnicity of NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh. She's now asking for a second chance - but her plea has been rejected by the federal Liberals. And she may end up running as an independent. Any moment now she's expected to hold a press conference. The Liberal candidate running against NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in the Burnaby South byelection has bowed out of the race. Karen Wang says she made comments online that referenced Singh's cultural background and her choice of words wasn't well-considered and didn't reflect her intent. StarMetro Vancouver reported this morning that Wang wrote on Chinese social media platform WeChat that she was the "only'' Chinese candidate in the riding, rather than Singh, who she identified as "of Indian descent.'' She says she "sincerely'' apologizes to Singh and has deep respect for him as the leader of his party and for his public service.   Onus on homeowners to opt-out of speculation tax Starting later this week, homeowners in Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, and other communities targeted by the speculation tax will be getting notices in the mail with “clear instructions” on how to apply for an exemption.
