While gamers of color are more active than their white counterparts, they still only make up about 13% of the gaming development industry, according to a study by Pew Research. First, we hear from Neil Jones, a Black video game developer who went independent after struggling for years to break into the industry. He shares what inspired him to pursue a career in video game development and the difficulties he and his peers faced looking for employment at traditional gaming studios. He shares how he created and released his own survival game, Aerial Knight's Never Yield, to carve his own path in. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with Damon Packwood, co-founder of Gameheads, a video game industry job training non-profit aimed at preparing marginalized students for work in the lucrative video game industry. Detroit born Neil Jones created "Aerial Knight's Never Yield" because he hadn't seen it before; a 3D side-scrolling endless runner, or “narrative runner,” as Jones passionately calls it, where the player must jump, dash, slide, and race to complete each level. As a product of hip-hop culture, the game reaches an aesthetic I've not seen before. Neil gave us some time where we talk about the challenges of creating a game like this, as well as his influences as we celebrate it's success. We take some time to talk about some broad thoughts about the game as a while as well as dedicating about 15 or so minutes to spoiler discussion. Persona 5 Strikers spoilers start 0:14:48 at and end at 0:32:41 Additionally, Joel spent a bit of time with the demo for Aerial_Knight's Never Yield, a new auto running game featured in the most recent Indie World that Nintendo held last week. Meanwhile, Kyran talks about his time with a single game of Resident Evil's newest weird multiplayer distraction, RE: Verse, and the highly anticipated Resident Evil Village demo. 30 minutes in the Village segment was enough to truly convince Kyran that this game is going to be brilliant as Resident Evil continues to stride forward (remember when we were all ready to write the series off after Resident Evil 6?) Over in the Bonus Round Joel runs us through the list of presented in the most recent Indie World, which included some games we've seen a lot (like Cris Tales) and some genuine surprises (like a new game being published by Konami based on an old NES IP and a new Oxenfree game from Night School). In this week's Pixels & Ink Podcast, Jordan and Chris are joined by newcomer, and Twitch up-and-comer: Debbie "Gluxbox." They sit down to talk about the Nintendo Indie Showcase; mostly the bigger names in announcements such as the "procedurally generated road trip," Road 96; the interestingly artistic, narratively driven: Last Stop, and Hindsight; the fresh runner with a banging soundtrack: Aerial_Knight's Never Yield; the chilled out, newly stylized OlliOlli World; and of course, the newest retro-styled return of the Beat Em' Up icon: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge.  Afterwards; Jordan, Chris and Deb discuss the rumours that the creators of the classic, early Internet virtual pet site Neopets, are considering bringing the property to the Nintendo Switch.
