Greg Fischer did not plan to spend ten years in recruitment. He joined a solo healthcare practice in LA as employee number one, figured it would pay the bills, and planned to open a gym someday. He never left.Instead he built one of the most profitable staffing businesses in the US. $4.2 million in NFI, $1.4 million net profit. 38 people and a seven-figure equity stake with a $50 million exit on the horizon. But he walked away with nothing! The push toward the exit had quietly changed how the business ran. “I think we started looking at people as much more like resources and just a means to an end than actually people.” Greg had spent a decade building his career on the opposite belief. But the drift was so gradual he hadn't noticed it.“I couldn't be the person I wanted to be and be in a good, healthy working dynamic. It was going to be one or the other.”On this episode of The RAG Podcast, Greg Fischer, founder of Well Oiled Machine, tells the full story. The gym that cost him $150,000. The 10 years building someone else's company. The walk away. And how he built a lean, profitable rec-to-rec from a mountain town in Colorado with no cold outbound and twenty clients in year one.Greg Fischer is not chasing the big exit this time. He is building something small, profitable, and built entirely around the person he decided he wanted to be.If you have ever wondered what it actually costs to chase a number, and whether the person collecting it is still someone you recognise, this episode has the blueprint.----------Episode Sponsor: AtlasAdmin is a massive waste of time. NFI's 3PL Growth, Real Estate Strategy, and Tech Adoption with Michael Landsburg (IAMC Little Rock) Live from the IAMC conference in Little Rock, the Industrial Advisors podcast interviews Michael Landsburg of NFI about the company's scale and strategy in the 3PL world. Landsburg explains NFI is a 94-year-old, privately held, family-owned supply chain company operating primarily in the US and Canada, with about 80 million square feet in its portfolio (about 17 million owned), roughly 18,000 employees, 5,000 trucks, and 14,000 trailers, serving shipments from Asian ports to home delivery. He discusses how NFI decides between customer-held leases, NFI-held leases, and owning facilities for control, speed, flexibility, and family investment diversification. This includes a shift after the global financial crisis toward leasing more space to third parties. He touches on submarket-by-submarket leasing conditions, NFI's strong performance versus the industry since 2022, a reduced risk posture in matching leases to contracts, ongoing data centralization to enable AI, warehouse automation with fully autonomous robots, and uncertainty over whether Asian-based 3PL growth represents net-new demand or market-share shift. 0:00 Intro and NFI overview 2:10 The history of the 94-year-old family business 4:15 Strategy behind owning vs leasing assets 6:30 Diversifying the portfolio after 2008 8:45 Current industrial market trends and softness 11:00 Leveraging data and AI in logistics 13:15 Autonomous robots in the warehouse 14:50 The impact of Asian 3PL growth 16:00 Closing thoughts and wrap up

A Calm Before the Storm: Cooling Markets, Falling Diesel, and What to Watch Before DOT Week It's the week of April 29, and the freight market is doing something rare… exhaling. On this episode of The Transfix Take, Jenni Ruiz and NFI's Justin Maze break down a quieter week across freight, where easing diesel prices and softening markets are giving brokers and carriers a brief window to reset before the surge of DOT Blitz Week. But don't get too comfortable. Beneath the surface, the signals are already shifting. Here's what we cover: Diesel prices are finally easing — down week-over-week nationally, with noticeable relief on the West Coast, pulling down all-in rates across regions Tender rejections remain elevated at ~13%, holding steady as the market prepares for its next move Linehaul rates are flat at ~$1.96/mile for loads over 200 miles, signaling stability… for now Flatbed continues to dominate, with rejection rates hovering near 50% and rates still climbing Regional cooling is widespread across the Southeast, South, Midwest, Northeast, and West Coast, driven largely by fuel declines and seasonality The Midwest and Northeast are in a seasonal slide, while the Southeast quietly sets up to become the most volatile region heading into May Spot opportunities are dipping — but expect a sharp rebound as capacity tightens and rejection rates climb into DOT Week Maze walks through why this “slow week” is actually a critical setup moment, and what brokers, shippers, and carriers should be doing right now to prepare for the volatility ahead. Because come next week, the market won't be quiet anymore.

This week on The Transfix Take, Jenni Ruiz and NFI market expert Justin Maze unpack a freight market that is anything but sleepy. They dig into the CBS Sunday report on chameleon carriers and what the launch of FMCSA's new MODIS registration system could mean for carrier vetting, fraud prevention, and the broader push for accountability across the industry. They also touch on the ongoing Strait of Hormuz disruption, why rerouted global cargo matters for domestic freight, and the small but welcome drop in fuel prices. From there, Jenni and Maze break down where the market stands today: national linehaul rates holding at $1.96 per mile, outbound rejections sitting above 14%, and flatbed rejection rates surging to nearly 50%, a flashing signal that volatility is already building. They close with a must-hear preview of DOT Week, explaining why this year's blitz could hit much harder than it has in the past two years, how brokers should prepare now, and why the coming weeks may trigger a meaningful reset in spot and contract pricing across the market. -- Disclaimer: All views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of Transfix, Inc. or any parent companies or affiliates or the companies with which the participants are affiliated, and may have been previously disseminated by them. In this week's episode of The Transfix Take, Jenni Ruiz and NFI market expert Justin Maze unpack the diesel surge shaking the industry, with fuel jumping from $3.89 to $5.37 a gallon in just a few weeks, and what that means for shippers already bracing for higher costs. They dig into why linehaul rates dipped, then started creeping back up again, how tender rejections are hovering around 14.5%, and why flatbed is in a league of its own with rejection rates reaching as high as 50%. Jenni and Justin also break down the regional picture, from tightening in the Southeast and Texas to mixed signals in the Midwest, loosening in the Pacific Northwest, and a surprising shift in Southern California. Plus, they look ahead to April and explain why produce season, fuel pressure, spot market exposure, and even a rise in new carrier authority applications could make the next few weeks especially unpredictable. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Contracts Tolled: What It Means for 2026 The Detroit Lions tolled the contracts of Levi Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal after both spent the entire 2025 season on the NFI list. The practical outcome is simple. What was slated for 2025 now applies to 2026. Neither player hits free agency. Both remain Detroit Lions into the new league year. Onwuzurike's 2025 deal carries forward. Paschal moves into the final year of his rookie contract. The distinction matters inside the NFL calendar and for how the Lions plan the defensive line room into training camp. Cap Mechanics and Roster Stakes Onwuzurike has a one year, $4,000,000 deal with $3,500,000 guaranteed. The contract included a $2,000,000 signing bonus, which is typically paid at signing, so the cash outlay this year is lighter. He had a likely to be earned playing time incentive of $250,000. He did not reach it. That amount credits back to the Detroit Lions cap, a small but welcome bump. Paschal sits in the final season of his rookie deal. One key difference with the NFI list compared to IR is that teams are not obligated to pay base salaries on NFI. Beyond signing bonuses, it is unknown what either player received while sidelined. Expectations must be measured. Neither should be penciled in for significant snaps. Both must prove they can make the team. Prior second round draft status should not influence the competition. If healthy, their presence adds depth and pushes the group in camp. The medical histories frame the caution. Onwuzurike played well in 2024 before his knee gave out. He later needed knee surgery. A torn ACL was discovered after he signed, and it was not related to his longstanding back issues. He is playing after a spinal fusion surgery, which remains remarkable. Paschal had back surgery last offseason. His prior issues included melanoma that metastasized in his foot, knee problems, and a hamstring issue. He missed last season for a back problem. Availability will decide their paths. Pro Bowl Note: Goff Finds St. Brown The Pro Bowl shifted to flag football and still offered a Detroit moment. A switch of the channel landed on Jared Goff delivering a pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. It is not tackle football. Accept that and the pace can be enjoyable. The connection was a quick reminder of timing and touch, even in an all star setting. The Detroit Lions Podcast goes live tonight at 8 PM with Chris to dig deeper into the cap ripple and the defensive line outlook. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #levionwuzurike #joshpaschal #non-footballinjurylist #contractstolled #teamcontrolinto2026 #playingtimeincentive #$2millionsigningbonus #likely-to-be-earnedincentive #rookiecontractfinalyear #tornacl Learn more about your ad choices. The freight recession may finally be over as January transportation metrics reveal a market in firm expansion territory. With the overall index hitting 59.6, a convergence of tightening capacity and rising rates suggests the cycle has officially turned. Regulatory pressures are squeezing the driver pool just as Werner Enterprises settles an 11-year-old lawsuit regarding driver wages. This $18 million payout underscores the rising floor for labor costs in an increasingly constrained environment. On the demand side, a surge in Japanese machine tool orders points to a manufacturing rebound later this year. North American orders jumped nearly 30%, signaling that industrial production is gearing up for a strong second half of 2026. Macroeconomic policy could also provide a tailwind if Fed Chair nominee Kevin Warsh shifts focus back to Main Street. His criticism of current monetary strategy suggests relief may be on the way for the industrial and small business sectors. Meanwhile, rail infrastructure is booming with Norfolk Southern customers advancing over $7.7 billion in new projects. The final Transfix Take of the year arrives at the peak of chaos — and opportunity — in the freight market. This week, Jenni Ruiz and NFI's market expert Justin Maze break down one of the most volatile December surges we've seen since the pandemic era. With spot rates spiking, winter weather wreaking havoc, and carriers finally regaining the upper hand, Maze walks listeners through what's driving the sudden escalation — and what it means as we head into 2026. Jenni and Maze take you region by region across the U.S. to unpack: • Why national spot rates are climbing faster than expected, with a potential 20¢ jump by New Year's • How winter storms and rollover freight are creating a ripple effect across long-haul and cross-country lanes • The Midwest's shocking 5%+ breakouts and what's behind the biggest surge of any region • Capacity tightening on the West Coast despite minimal weather disruptions • The looming non-domicile CDL rulings that could reshape Q1 and Q2 capacity • Whether this is officially the start of the carrier “revenge market” Maze also shares his early forecast for 2026 — including how January sets the tone, why a 5–8% annual rate increase is firmly on the table, and what brokers must do now to keep carriers aligned heading into the new year. It's our last episode of the year — and one of the most insight-packed. If you're a freight broker, shipper, or anyone navigating transportation volatility, this is the year-end debrief you don't want to miss. -- Disclaimer: All views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of Transfix, Inc. or any parent companies or affiliates or the companies with which the participants are affiliated, and may have been previously disseminated by them. "Service isn't a necessary evil—it's your most valuable relationship builder." This week, Tim welcomes Bart Ogden, owner of Home Safe Hearth & Chimney in Wichita, Kansas, to discuss how service work can be the foundation of a thriving hearth business. Starting as a chimney sweep in 1979 in a town of 600 people, Bart built his company on a simple principle: if someone calls needing help, we're going to help them—regardless of brand, age, or who installed it. In this episode, Tim and Bart discuss: Why servicing everything—not just what you sell—builds long-term customer relationships that outlast and outperform the initial sale. The lifetime value of a service customer: How annual or bi-annual maintenance over decades generates more revenue than the original installation, and creates trust when replacement is finally needed. Profitability through knowing your numbers: Why specialty service businesses need 60% margins to thrive, and how to build a supply chain that supports servicing all brands. Building a systematic training program: How Bart created a 100-day curriculum using certification paths (CSIA, NFI) that trains every technician to the same standard, regardless of their background. The power of great inspections: Why every successful service job starts with ensuring customers know the exact condition of their system, then letting them choose what happens next. Don't miss this episode that reframes service from an afterthought into the strategic foundation of a sustainable hearth business. ------ Become a supporter of The Fire Time Network and get access to awesome rewards: https://itsfiretime.com/join To hear more audio articles from our magazine, subscribe to the Fire Time Magazine Podcast: https://www.itsfiretime.com/magazine To get a copy of the 2025 Fire Time Journal: https://www.itsfiretime.com/journal Read The Fire Time Magazine Reader Edition online: https://magazine.itsfiretime.com

JD Vance has been in the Cotswolds this week on his Britain fantasy tour. This has been billed as a ‘holiday' but he did take the time out of his busy schedule to meet with some of Britain's right-wing politicians. Robert Jenrick, Chris Philp and Nigel Farage were all granted an audience with the vice-president, and even Danny Kruger and pillow salesman/Apprentice star Thomas Skinner got the call-up. The notable exclusion is, of course, Kemi Badenoch, who despite claiming to be firm friends with Vance was NFI'd. CCHQ claim this is due to scheduling, but clearly it's an embarrassing snub. A X. Budapest Ritmo fesztivál április 10. Maciej Zientara to fascynująca postać polskiego biznesu, której historia pokazuje, że sukces często idzie w parze z odwagą podejmowania ryzyka i umiejętnością dostrzegania szans. Przez lata pracował w czołowych instytucjach finansowych, m.in. w Banku Handlowym i BRE Banku, gdzie uczestniczył w największych transakcjach M&A w Polsce. Jednak przełomowym momentem była decyzja o samodzielności i zainwestowaniu całego majątku w wykup lewarowany NFI. To ryzykowne posunięcie przyniosło mu wielokrotny zwrot z inwestycji.
