We kick off a new sermon series based on the description given to John and Peter by the religious leaders in Act 4:13 "They were ordinary and unschooled men but they were astonished and took note that they had been with Jesus.". This new series will look at every day, ordinary individuals who encountered Jesus and how it changed or impacted their lives. We kick the series off by looking at 4 individuals who encountered Jesus on the last day he was alive; two of his disciples who betrayed him and the two thieves on the cross who died with him. Listen in to discover how those 4 separate paths will lead to two very different destinations after their encounters with Jesus. The Bhagavad Gita contains eighteen chapters and 700 verses. The eighteenth chapter is called Moksha Sanyas Yoga -union with Liberation through renunciation. It is reaching the destination, which is moksha or liberation, through the path of sanyas or renunciation. This liberation is getting freedom from our divisive mindset; freedom from belief systems; and finally, even freedom from renunciation. This chapter begins with Arjun's question, "O Hrishikesha, I wish to know distinctly the truth of sannyas (renunciation) and tyaga (relinquishment or abandonment)" (18.1). Krishna replies, "Sages call 'sanyas' the renunciation of all desire ridden actions. The wise declare that 'tyaga' is the relinquishment of the fruits of activities (18.2). Some philosophers declare that all work is tainted and should be forsaken; others declare that acts of yajna (fire rituals or selfless actions), daan (charity), and tapah (penance or self-discipline) should not be relinquished" (18.3). Krishna uses sanyas and tyaga interchangeably, thus, indicating that these are two different names used for renunciation. Krishna makes us aware of the four schools of thought on the aspect of renunciation. Incidentally, at their core, all the belief systems are based on one school of thought or another. The first school is about the renunciation of all desire-ridden actions. It is the absence of motivation while performing actions. The second school states that renunciation is relinquishing the fruits of action while performing any karma (action) The third school is about renouncing all the actions as they are all tainted. This school of thought suggests dropping the sense of doer-ship by treating the 'existence' as the doer of actions. Finally, the fourth school is about being selective about actions. Actions like yagna, daan and tapah shouldn't be relinquished. Whatever may be the school of thought, in one way or another all these paths lead to the same destination -mokha.

Rahul Singh, the insightful host of the Bearded Mystic Podcast, joins us to share his remarkable journey from university scepticism to a deep spiritual awakening. Together, we explore how questioning our beliefs can lead to profound stability and purpose. Raul's personal story, enriched by the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita and non-dual philosophy, offers a blueprint for anyone seeking to align their life with deeper spiritual truths. We delve into the nature of awareness and the timeless teachings of mystics like Osho, Jiddu Krishnamurti, and Ramana Maharshi. Essential to this journey is the role of a guru, who can guide seekers through the complexities of Vedanta and Hinduism. By fostering an open-minded approach and perceiving spiritual teachings as alive and present, we uncover the essence of non-duality and the boundless nature of awareness. In our final discussions, we highlight practical techniques for starting a meditation practice, emphasizing the importance of honest self-reflection and the dangers of premature spiritual ego. He grew up immersed in the ancient traditions of Middle Eastern Christianity (Maronite Catholicism) and was expected to become a priest, a family tradition since the year 1300. He was led otherwise. Alexander John attended the University of Notre Dame and received a degree in Cultural Anthropology. Next came a brief time in seminary followed by a Master's in Counseling Education, a Master's in Religious Education, a graduate certificate in Pastoral Psychotherapy, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His extensive psychological training across many modalities finally led him to Switzerland where he studied with the Jungian Analyst and founder of Sandplay Psychotherapy, Dora Maria Kalff. Alexander John became the first US man admitted to the International Society for Sandplay Therapy and continues to serve as a senior Certified Teaching Member of the organization. Returning to the United States, he undertook years of private practice, teaching, parish and retreat ministry and further study. Integrating his life-long practice of prayer with many cross-disciplines—anthropology, psychology, spirituality, and ritual work—has shaped him into a unique thought-leader and a widely sought consultant, trainer, and inspiring keynote speaker. Then in 2000, Alexander John's professional life expanded from being primarily a speaker to also that of an author, now with some eight books and more in the works. He lives in the high Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico and the wild Atlantic coast of Northwest Spain. Four Paths up the mountain is about four different ways to change your life for the better. This is only for the persons who are Aware. This is for persons who are beyond blaming a host of other causes for their condition or conditions. It is for the person who says, regardless of the start I am responsible for the finish. There are four options. You only need to choose one, just one to change your life forever.
It has been three weeks since the war in Ukraine began. The fighting grinds on and there is no clear end in sight. But what are the potential paths forward in the coming days and weeks? On Wednesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an address to Congress, proposed one such path, though it is an incredibly unlikely one: a no-fly zone over Ukraine.Elsewhere, Times reporting has suggested four other potential scenarios — a diplomatic end to the conflict; protracted monthslong fighting; China coming to Russia's rescue; and President Vladimir V. Putin expanding the conflict beyond Ukraine's borders. We explore these scenarios and consider which of them is most likely to occur.Guest: David E. Sanger, a White House and national security correspondent for The New York Times.Have you lost a loved one during the pandemic? Predicting how it might end is proving far more difficult. In a speech to Congress, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine called for a no-fly zone and more weapons to combat Russia's assault and implored President Biden to be “the leader of peace.”Want more from The Daily? In 1993, Theologian and activist Matthew Fox, Ph.D., was expelled from the Dominican Order of the Catholic church after 34 years, by Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI). His mistake was reviving Creation Spirituality, which decries original sin (the doctrine that we're all born sinners) in favor of Everyone Born is a Blessing (seeing all creation as divine). Creation Spirituality blends teachings from the Christian mystics with science, the arts, social justice, environmentalism, and ideas from other spiritual traditions worldwide (including those of indigenous cultures). Wasting no time, Fox became an Episcopal priest the year following his ouster. His upcoming book, Essential Writings on Creation Spirituality will be released on March 23, 2022. In this episode, we discuss: The Four Paths of Creation Spirituality. Reinventing forms of worship. The Cosmic Christ. The distinction between sin and evil. Matthew's approach to a feminist theology. Applying the 7 capital “sins” to the chakras. Recovery of the sacred to save the planet. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this series on paths, we take a deeper look at each enneagram type by discovering how our dominant type is connected to these whole other sides of our personality through the arrow lines of the enneagram. Traditionally called “stress path” and “growth path,” Jessica teaches a different way of looking at the paths as a dynamic part of our personality that we take both positive and negative characteristics from on a day to day basis, but can lean into and grow through in seasons.
Setting and pursuing goals can be tedious. To change your results – you first have to change the way you look at things. In this episode, Dan and Kiley go deep on four transformational paths that will add energy, fulfillment, and momentum toward whatever it is you want to achieve or experience in 2022. Listen in as they share their own experiences on what drains energy and what ignites it. The best part? You decide what, when, and how often – one step at a time.

Yoga, the sister science of Ayurveda manifests itself as four major paths. Patanjali, the Indian sage who is believed to have authored the Yoga Sutras, derived the four paths of Yoga for further enlightenment of people. These four paths are like the branches of a tree with the roots deeply embedded in our inner self. Colette describes these four paths, which are: Bhakti Yoga Karma Yoga Raja Yoga Jnana Yoga Connecting with our true nature lies by connecting to these internal roots rather than searching for it outside of ourselves. Ayurveda and the four paths of Yoga help us navigate this journey to self-realization or to our true nature. * Thanks to Kerala Ayurveda Academy for sponsoring this episode. The Michael Yardney Podcast | Property Investment, Success & Money
As the world works its way through the confronts of the Covid related economic issues, lockdowns, and health challenges, one thing has become clear. The rich keep getting richer. They seem to do this through pandemics, through good times and bad. And this has led a lot of people to ask why? How? What do they do differently? That's what we're going to discuss in today's Rich Habits, Poor Habits episode of the Michael Yardney podcast. Even if you come here to learn about property, success or money, at the end of today's show you're going to understand some new research that Tom Corley has uncovered which should help you in your future endeavours. The Four Paths to Wealth There are four predominant paths toward accumulating wealth. The “Savers-Investors” path is the easiest, while the other three involve much more risk. The Saver-Investors path Just less than 22% of the millionaires in Tom's study chose to take the Saver-Investors path. Not only is it the easiest way to build wealth, but if you start early, it almost always guarantees a lot of money. The Saver-Investors had four things in common: A middle-class income A low cost of living and preference for saving to save A habit of saving 20% or more of their income. An early start to investing their savings The Dreamers path This is perhaps the hardest path to building wealth because it requires the pursuit of a dream, such as starting a business, becoming a successful actor, musician, or author. Approximately 28% of the folks in Tom's study were Dreamers, and they accumulated an average net worth of $7.4 million — far more than any of the other groups — over a period of about 12 years. Those who want to take this path, however, must be willing to work long hours and able to handle financial stress. The Dreamers in my study worked more than 61 hours per week before finally achieving their dreams. Weekends and vacations were almost non-existent. The Company Climbers path Climbers are individuals who work for a big company and devote all of their energy to climbing the corporate ladder until they land a senior executive position. This is the second-hardest path to becoming a millionaire, and about 31% of the rich people I studied fell into this group. It took them an average of 22 years to accumulate a net worth of $3.4 million or more. In most cases, their wealth came from either stock compensation or a partnership share of profits. To be a Climber, you must have strong relationship-building skills. Networking and making lasting connections with powerful people in your industry are essential. The Virtuosos path Roughly 19% of the participants in Tom's study chose this path. Virtuosos are among the best at what they do in their profession. They are paid a high premium for their knowledge and expertise, which sets them apart from the competition. It took the Virtuosos in my study about 20 years to reach an average net worth of $4 million. Some worked in the medical field, while others worked in law. A handful either worked for large, publicly-held corporations, or they were small business owners with highly profitable enterprises. Four Paths of Light is a four movement suite for a solo instrument, played by Jason Vieaux, and Road to the Sun, a piece in six parts, performed by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Metheny himself plays his arrangement of Arvo Part's piano piece Fur Alina, on an extraordinary 42 string instrument. Pat Metheny tells John Wilson about this ambitious work. We've reaction to today's Budget Statement from the Chancellor. Rishi Sunak has added £300m to the £1.57bn Cultural Recovery Fund, £90m more for museums, and £18m for cultural community projects, but will the newly announced extension to the government's Self Employment Income Support scheme really help struggling arts freelancers? And how can the festivals industry plan for the summer without the government-backed insurance scheme many were calling for? Chairman of the DCMS parliamentary select committee, Julian Knight MP and Paule Constable from the Freelancers Make Theatre Work campaign join us to discuss. And Poet Amanda Gorman became famous around the world when she read her poem The Hill We Climb at Biden’s Inauguration, and now her work is due to be translated into multiple languages. Publishers Meulenhoff have been criticised for appointing a white writer, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, to translate Gorman’s poetry into Dutch, and now Rijneveld has stepped down amid the furore. It's the big day and there's a lot going on. Relationships are being redefined. Power dynamics are actively shifting and yet, in the words of wedding planner Tria Chang, "It's taboo to acknowledge or to express anything but joy." What would it look like to make room for some of the more complex emotions? To let everyone acknowledge the effect a wedding has on their unique relationship to the couple? Music by Terry Hughes Image Credit Mercedes Bosquet Links: A Joyful Wedding Can Still Make Room for Grief The Cosmic Mass What is Creation Spirituality Full Transcript Chang: I was actually talking to a young woman the other day who is thinking about becoming a wedding planner. And she had one hesitation, she asked me, “I heard that people act irrational and crazy on wedding days, is that true?” And I had to be honest with her and tell her it's partly true. People behave in ways that seem bizarre and irrational on wedding days, but if you really strip away what's happening, to me it makes perfect sense the ways that they're acting out. So it's the big day and there's a lot going on. Relationships are being redefined. Power dynamics are actively shifting and yet it’s taboo to feel anything but joy. What would it look like to make room for some of the more complex emotions? To acknowledge the effect a wedding has on their unique relationship everyone has with the couple? This is Shame Piñata. I'm Colleen Thomas. I'm so happy to welcome Tria Chang and her wisdom back on today’s show. Tria and I met last year when she was in the process of planning her second wedding. She was working through a rich and complicated experience of weddings, being a former wedding planner who had participated in over 100 ceremonies and who had gone through a divorce during those years. As she looked ahead to her second wedding, she wanted to create a unique ceremony that was a perfect fit for herself and her partner. At the time we met, I shared with Tria some of the details of my own wedding, specifically how it was designed to make room for all of the feelings, both happy and other. Weddings bring up a myriad of feelings and yet we're taught that there is only room for joy on the day. There's no above-board acknowledgement of how the new union will shift the family dynamics or sometimes push friendships to the back seat. We are not encouraged to sit down and have meaningful conversations about these things with our friends and family, about how the new union will change things for everyone. And when something is not brought into the light or given room for expression, it can take on a life of its own. Think people behaving irrationally at weddings. Think Bridezillas. Shortly after that first interview, Tria and I sat down again to explore what all is happening at a wedding - the many people, the many perspectives, the many feelings. The big mash up of everything happening at once and the things that may not get acknowledged. We typically think about the couple when we think of a wedding, but there are so many more people involved and each person brings their own perspective, expectations, and life experiences to that day. There's the couple, their parents and siblings and maybe even children, their friends and family who make up the wedding party, and the guests. In addition to people we could look around the room and see, there are also invisible forces that can influence the day. There's that phenomenon I call the female legacy, which women can be acutely attuned to by the mere fact that marriage has been a survival tool for women historically. I'm not sure how else to describe it other than to say weddings can be heavier for women. There also may be some acute losses going on, such as the loss of a father to give the bride away or the loss of a close friend missed by the entire community. And there's often this idea that it all happens in one moment, there's this wedding, and it happens in a day and boom, you're married and it's all transitions are finished. Chang: To add the behind the scenes perspective even for the vendors, for most of the weddings that I planned, there were at least 8-12 different vendors working on things. And each of those vendors come in with their own goals and agendas. So for example, the makeup artist will of course be wanting to make the bride look beautiful because it's her day, but she also has her portfolio to think about. So she'll be wanting the photographer to get certain shots of the hair and makeup, be sending that to her or be recording it for herself for her own social media or website. The photographer's obviously working on a portfolio as well and they want to get a certain type of shot that can help them get on wedding blogs or gain the trust of other clients. And the planner or stylist has a certain look that they're trying to achieve so that they can also show their best work in their portfolio and attract future clients too. So there are a lot of desires going on on a wedding day, not just the personal, also the professional. And then there is that feeling of transition, as you said, and transitions don't happen in one moment that you're not a completely different person right after you have the ring on or right after you kiss. It's just part of the process. So there is a lot going on in the wedding day, and that you're supposed to pack all of these things in, and you're supposed to be thrilled about it the whole time. So everyone is really supposed to be on their best behavior, and it doesn't usually turn out that way. Thomas: Right. And we've had quite a few conversations about the other feelings, the feelings that are harder maybe, the feelings that don't fit in the pretty package, the feelings that we're not allowed to have at a wedding, they get discouraged, and maybe the even the unconscious losses that folks aren't even aware that they're feeling. What tensions have you seen come up at weddings? Chang: Yeah, there have been a lot of tensions that come up, I think the most common one I've seen is usually between the couple and their parents. So sometimes there are mothers of the bride who are feeling protective, or like they don't really want to let go. So they start trying to control small things like the way the bride is getting her makeup done, or trying to change menu items last minute. It can really come out in ways that seem unrelated, but are just things that catch their attention and show them a way of having more control in that moment. I also had a client who… they were a slightly older couple and so they didn't have their parents involved in the planning at all. And when the mother of the groom showed up to the ceremony site, which was an art gallery, she was furious. She just hated the venue. She thought it was so ugly and she told me, “These pictures on the wall, they're awful. They have to go. There aren't enough flowers!” And, you know, in an art gallery you can't change the display. It's off limits. We did end up moving some flowers around for her. And she didn't like the concrete floor which was part of the modernist look. But I talked to the bride and groom and told them I think it would really help her if she could have some say. And so they were comfortable with us putting down an aisle runner, so at least having something cloth for them to walk down - f or whatever reason that became important to her in that moment. Thomas: Right. And would you say that with a lot of these people, that these attempts to regain a little bit of control, feeling uncomfortable, that it was unconscious? Chang: Yes, I definitely think it was unconscious, I think they were really focused on that tangible thing. Because that seemed rational to them that seemed like something they could handle. Whereas going within and taking those steps inside and recognizing I'm losing my son or my daughter in these small ways. That's a really daunting thing to look at. And you don't really want to look at that on a wedding day, because what if it breaks you? What if you break down and end up inconsolable? You don't want to be that person at a wedding. You want to be supportive and joyful. So yes, I definitely saw a lot of unconscious outbursts at things that were probably not the real problem. But after those outbursts, people did seem to be able to feel a little bit better or maybe they felt a little embarrassed about how they acted and were able to let go and get into the joy of it more. Thomas: How do you think it would have been different for those in those situations, if the couple had said, "We don't want you to hold it together. We want you to just be here and have all your feelings." Chang: I like that idea a lot. But I've also seen the dynamics between parents and their children can be so hard to change that even if their children tell them, “Be yourself, let go,” if that's not their personality, I'm not sure they would be able to do that. But maybe even just having that permission would have felt good. It's hard to say. Thomas: Right. Tria wrote an article for the Washington Post about the wedding my husband and I created, specifically how we worked in a section for grieving. To explain how our wedding came about, I need to take you back 20 years. In the year 2000, I moved to California to attend Matthew Fox's graduate program in Creation Spirituality. Fox is often described as a renegade theologian and it was his unique event called the Techno Cosmic Mass that drew me to his school. The Techno Cosmic Mass, or Cosmic Mass as it is now called, is a multimedia rave-like community worship experience that brings prayer and devotion off the pages of the hymnal and into the soles of the feet. During my years in school I attended almost every mass. One thing I didn't know was that my future husband was also attending those events. But we wouldn't even meet each other for another 5 years when the masses were no longer being produced. So we met. And then 10 years later, we decided to get married and began considering what kind of ceremony might be a good fit for us. We were actually kind of stuck because we come from different traditions and nothing seemed to come organically. But as synchronicity would have it, Matthew Fox and his team began producing the Cosmic Mass again right around that time. And on a Sunday night, in a room full of people sweating their prayers under flashing dance lights we realized we found it - we'd found the way we wanted to get married. We were going to create the first ever Techno Cosmic Wedding. The structure of the Cosmic Mass follows the Four Paths of Creation Spirituality. To give you some context, the Four Paths of Creation Spirituality are: The Via Positiva, a time of joy, awe and wonder; the Via Negativa, a time of darkness, letting go, and grieving; the Via Creativa, honoring ourselves as divinely creative beings; and lastly the Via Transformativa, a time of preparing ourselves to go forward as spiritual warriors. While we structured the entire wedding on these four paths, it was the Via Negativa that was most unusual to have in a wedding. Matthew Fox defines the Via Negativa as "a time of communal grieving for the suffering of the planet and all beings." Here's how Tria described the Via Negativa section of our wedding ceremony in her article: "The room was dimly lit. Wedding guests were seated on the floor, eyes closed, some crying, some reaching out in comfort. Bodies swayed gently to a melancholic chorus, and a woman’s voice crescendoed with emotion... The speaker invited guests to summon feelings of loss - whether those be for the loss of loved ones, of faith, of youth, of passion - and to embrace feelings of fear, for the world or for themselves." It was important for us to include time for these harder emotions in our wedding ceremony because we wanted to make room for our full selves to show up both at the wedding in the marriage. Thomas: And we've spent some time too talking about the idea of the Via Negativa which comes from the wedding that my husband and I had where we actually had a section of the wedding dedicated to grieving and we've talked about how that was very unusual. Chang: Yes, and wonderful, I think. Thomas: And you and your fiancé are planning something a little bit like that for your second wedding. Chang: Yes, so we have such a small wedding and I think our guests tend to be on the more conventional side. So instead of having it at the actual wedding and having an orchestrated section of going through Via Negativa like you did, we've been spreading it out over the months leading up to the wedding, and we plan to continue making space for it after the wedding even in the years to come. Because I think it's important to realize that negative feelings, especially grief, they don't go away after one session. They can't be addressed very quickly. But if you make space for them in an ongoing way, I think it makes it easier to make joy the forefront of a certain day, in this case the wedding day. So what we've been doing is having conversations with people close to us and asking them what kind of fears they might have about how our relationship going forward might be or any fears for us as a couple, or just anything on their mind really that may be different from the regular congratulations. And then inspired by you and Rodrigo, my fiancé and I did our own kind of private Via Negativa with the two of us. We did it last week and we lit candles and turned off the lights and played some music and then I asked us to write down in a notebook all the things that we were scared about or nervous about for the wedding day. And then all of the things that made us have those fear feelings for marriage in general. And so we wrote for a little while and then we took turns sharing things and it lasted about two hours actually. We really got to talk about a lot of things. Anything from just where would we spend Christmases, like which family gets us at which time of year, to how will the dynamic change when we have children, and what will happen if, you know, one of our parents passes away, how will we take care of the other one? So we really covered a lot of ground and I think felt a lot better afterwards. But we also recognize it's a conversation that will continue. And then we had a special song to us and did the eye contact for a while to kind of let it all settle in. Thomas: That's wonderful. That's so wonderful. Chang: Yeah. Thomas: So you've really laid the groundwork, then for yourself, each of you individually plus you as a couple plus the people in your life, to have space to share any fears, any, any worries... Chang: Yes, yeah. Because we are both at a point in our lives where we recognize marriage is difficult, because life is difficult and you're attaching yourself to someone else's life. So you will get all their difficulties plus all your difficulties. And that is something to celebrate, because you'll have someone with you, but it's also something to be a little bit nervous about and having space for all of that really feels a lot better. And I do have you to thank for that because it kind of didn't click for me until I saw your wedding ceremony from the video you showed me. And seeing that Via Negativa and seeing the space you made made me realize that was what was missing in my wedding planning. Because I had been going to a bit of therapy and trying to deal with my own feelings of worry because I was married before and it didn't work out. And so I knew I had to do this second wedding and marriage differently. But I wasn't quite sure how. So seeing your experience really helped me. I asked Tria how she worked with couples around the loss of a loved one at the wedding. Chang: With acute losses, or grief in general, that can be a really difficult thing to handle at a wedding because, as we talked about, a wedding is supposed to be all joy and it feels scary to invite something in that will bring you grief and sadness. But sometimes people are important to us and when they're not there, to kind of brush it under the rug, it doesn't really feel real. So I think, in some ways, it could be interesting to expand what happens at a wedding to include some of the things that happen at a memorial or a grief ritual. So we can look to other cultures, for example, like the Day of the Dead. You know, they have these beautiful altars and flowers and favorite foods of that loved one, and they really presence them. And at most weddings I've been to where they've lost a loved one, they either have a line about them in the program or a picture or two kind of on a shelf in a corner that you can easily bypass if you want to. And they are honoring them, but they're making it really kind of optional and something that's easy to ignore if you're not comfortable with that. But it could be really lovely to actually invite that deceased loved one in and really have them there with a favorite food or some tradition that they loved. At my little wedding ceremony, we are having our... instead of place cards with people's names, we're writing cards to everyone with our heartfelt sentiments to them and we're writing them on watercolor painted envelopes and cards. And my mom was a watercolor artist and a lot of weekends, we would spend painting big sheets of watercolor together and then cutting out envelopes. And in those days, people used to mail each other letters often. So we would use those envelopes. So I had my fiancé make these envelopes with me and I really felt her there with me. And he's never met my mom so it was a great way for me to introduce her to him and show him this is how I would spend my weekends with my mom. And I know that having those envelopes there on the day, it's small, it's not going to be very distracting for people who didn't know her. But I will make a mention of the meaning that they have to me. And I think I'll feel her there more in that way. Thomas: Hmm, that's a really beautiful way of including her. As the interview came to a close, Tria and I touched on inclusivity at the wedding, how to include everyone even in a small ceremony. Chang: We are actually having a very casual meetup at a cafe, the week after our wedding ceremony for all of those friends of ours who we didn't feel like we could accommodate at the ceremony because it's so small, but who we still wanted to celebrate with in some way. So we're just having some snacks at a cafe and a tarot card reader and a watercolor portrait artist. And that’s pretty much it we're just gonna hang out. For me, I'm so... I think I have a caregiving aspect to my personality that I have not been able to shake. So when I think about holding an event for people, I literally think of it from every single person's perspective and think of how to make it comfortable for them. So we're having 25 people at our wedding. And that's, you know, me thinking through the day 25 times and that seemed like my limit. I feel like I don't want to think through this in 125 ways, just 25. That's all I can manage. Thomas: Is that something that you ever recommended to your clients when you were a wedding planner? Chang: Oh, no. That's just a problem that I have. I don't recommend it at all. Yeah, I've even tried to imagine for my two year old niece, like, okay, she's gonna get bored around this time. So I'm like... put Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes on our playlist for the wedding. Like, make sure to have something for everybody. Thomas: Oh, wow. That is super personalized Chang: A little kid playlist just for the cute little ones. Thomas: That’s so wonderful. Well, thank you so much for your inspiration and for sharing your story of your, your second wedding, and all that you're learning and doing and experiencing and all that you bring from everything you've done before. Chang: Thank you as well and, to use your term, for holding space for all of these conversations. And I think that there is such an automatic track that people get on when they wedding plan so I hope that hearing stories on your podcast will help people realize they don't have to follow an automatic track. They can do it as they want to. They can have a Via Negativa if they want to. Thomas: They can! Thank you so much for joining us today for this conversation about making room for all of the emotions on the wedding day. This episode discusses the Four Paths to God, which together lead to god and self realization. The devotional path to god (bhakti yoga) is the oldest and simplest of the four paths to God, which includes the path of wisdom (jnana yoga), service to others (karma yoga), and meditation (raja yoga). Together these paths cause us to know and love god as ourself. As a child I had a natural love of God. I grew up attending fundamentalist Christian churches and remember sometimes being overcome with devotion before I was old enough to listen to the words. However, as I grew older and began to understand the things that were being said about God that capacity to feel devotional fervor went away. The hypocrisy and incoherent theology of the religious people I grew up with turned me off to religion, and for a time even turned me off to God. The God of my childhood was vengeful, petty, and judgmental. The imagery of my childhood religion depicted God as an old man with a white beard sitting in heaven judging his creation. He was to be feared but gave us few reasons for loving him. There was also talk of Jesus, but we heard little of his mercy. Jesus was one with the old man with a white beard in heaven, and we had disappointed both of them. The theology of my childhood religion encouraged us to profess faith in Jesus as God and assured us that alone was enough to be “saved.” I quickly noticed that those who made this profession and started going to church adopted a fake piety and in most cases became more judgmental than they were before their conversion, before slipping back into their old modes of being. My intellect and heart rejected this version of God, and for a long time it cut off the flow of devotional love. It wasn’t until my kundalini awakening in 2012 that those devotional waters began to flow once more. In an instant, after years of being an atheist, my heart flew open and I experienced nonduality and overwhelming love for all things. I did not consciously walk the four paths of yoga to re-discover my love of God, but in retrospect that is what I did. I began by finding conceptualizations of God that were more in alignment with my mystical experiences of God. This was different from the dualistic God I grew up with that was always separate from his creation. This God was without gender, this God was omnipresent, indwelling, and transcendent. This God was another name for all that is. There could be no separation between me and this version of God. I was walking the path of the jnana yogi, refining my understanding of God with my intellect. In order to truly love and know God I had to heal my intellectual understanding of God (jnana), sensitize myself to God’s presence through meditation (raja), and start relinquishing my selfishness through service to others (karma). Now I can worship God in all of God’s varied forms, with the clear understanding that God is all and in all. Some people might ask, “Why should we worship God if God is in us, and not separate from us?” It is quite simple, in order to be truly one with God in mind, body, and soul we must love God. We learn to love God through acts of devotion. It is in the heart space where we experience undifferentiated union with God. Moreover, devotion is an indispensable ally in overcoming the ego. One of the last aspects of ego to go is spiritual pride. I was hesitant to offer myself in service to others as a spiritual guide because I felt like I had too much spiritual pride. When I sat in Ayahuasca ceremony in Peru I asked my Divine Mother Kali Maa how to overcome this spiritual pride, and through a series of visions and experiences she taught me that when I was at my spiritual highest I was nobody and became her, and that when I became proud of that fact I became baby Ganesh in her arms and should praise her. Now when I sense spiritual pride creeping in I praise my Divine Mother and remember I am but a helpless baby in her arms. When I praise Mother I experience her as the Shakti kundalini energy racing through my spine. When I praise Shiva I experience him as pure witnessing awareness in my third eye. When I praise Jesus Christ I experience him as pure loving energy in my heart and as radiating union with Brahman in my crown, I have found this is the same energy I experience when praising Vishnu or Krishna. These are all different names for different expressions of the one infinite God. When you learn devotion with right understanding we find we can love God and experience God in all of God’s infinite forms. Begin with the form most beloved by your heart and praise God with complete trust and devotion. As your heart opens and as you become sensitized to God’s presence through effective meditation, you will experience our omnipresent infinitely loving God in all things. Infinite and transcendent, yet ever willing to take on whatever form is most pleasing to our hearts.
The Source of all experience is pure consciousness.

Although yoga philosophy teaches that there is only one Supreme Consciousness as the source and substance of all that is, there are many different ways to realize this oneness. Classical yoga includes four major paths to suit the varied temperaments of students: Bhakti Yoga, the path of the heart, or devotion; Karma Yoga, the way of selflessly using our hands in service to the Divine in others; Jnana Yoga, which uses the mind to go beyond the mind; and Raja Yoga, which uses meditation and other techniques to directly experience the Divine. This week, we have been building up our Energy/Effort/Persistence (viriya) by focusing on the virtue (middah) of Order (seder). That may seem like a strange choice, but with a little discernment, we realized it was the right thing to do.Effort is one of the Five Strengths, and as such, it controls Laziness. When we thought about this, we found many examples of Effort in our lives, and while I would not say our Effort is perfect, we had a difficult time finding the flaw we needed to work on, or how exactly we could work on building up the virtue. When we turned our eye to what it is meant to control, Laziness, we saw that while we couldn't call ourselves lazy, there were significant aspects of our lives that were blocked. There are messes so big and projects so daunting, so we choose not to expend any effort at all toward them.Ah ha! That is the biggest problem with our practice of Right Effort. When we couldn't see a way forward, we turned and went another way. The messes seemed insurmountable. So what we needed to focus on was our understanding and practice of Order (seder). As our Musar text, we picked How to make sense of any mess, by Abby Covert. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to do this. The book is simple straightforward and easy to read. It will change the way you see any mess in your life.I am not going to go on about the book. I might later, but right now, I feel like I should focus more on the spiritual things. The book is eminently practical. That is not to say that spirituality isn't, but I know that I often spend way too much time in my head wrestling with arcane theological and mystical insights, but what I have learned this week is that my understanding of spiritual order has a direct effect on my practice of order in my daily life. The Order of ZionI have been baptized and confirmed in Jesus Christ and thus, I am a citizen of Zion still living in Babylon. I hope to build a little piece of Zion here, but for now I am surrounded by Babylon. I am consecrated to Jesus through Mary, and I awake everyday with the familiar prayer, "I am all yours, and all that I have is yours, O Jesus, through Mary, our Holy Mother."Zion is the Kingdom of Heaven. It is not a political change here, nor is it a geographical location. I am a warrior/ambassador of Zion, and if you are Friend of Christ and his Cross, you are too. I cannot cower in the face of the mess of the world. My work and practice is to make myself into the best warrior/ambassador that I can be, and hopefully make others interested in taking citizenship in Zion as well. I have to not only fill myself with the energies of God, but connect my life to them so they can flow through me unimpeded. The Order of Zion is not learning the Four Paths of Creation Spirituality and taking up the ten practices. It is learning to live Dabhar, Royal Personhood, Kenosis, Creativity, and Transformation (among so many other things). It is not enough to know what Dabhar is. It is the creative word of God. I have to learn to connect with Dabhar, and to live it out in my life.I have a lot of ideas about how to do this, and I will share them as I write them out. I would love to hear your comments and ideas. I am moving forward through the practice of Musar, since I have seen it have the most effect on my heart and my life.O, Light of God that could not be overcome, shine through me and conquer the darkness around me. An old saying is that we humans are “creatures of habit.” We develop behavior patterns as an ordinary, basic skill of being human. Some behaviors helped us survive in the past – but get in the way of progress now. When the consequences lead to disappointment, it helps to have reinforcement for the changes you want to make. In this episode, host Michuael Anne Conley offers the third of Four Paths to Emotional Sanity, which is to be honest with yourself and others. This episode includes experiential exercises.
