In this episode, my guest is Dr. Ellen Langer, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Harvard University and the world's leading researcher on the mind-body connection and the power our thinking has on our physical health. She explains how specific ways of framing and asking questions about the world shape our physical health and rate of aging. Dr. Langer also explains how our perception of time and control significantly impact our rate of physical healing, hormones, immune system, and longevity. She describes mindfulness as a way of framing life, not simply a meditation or other practice, and discusses data showing how to use one's mind to overcome health challenges and achieve remarkable outcomes. Dr. Langer is a luminary and pioneer in researching the relationship between the mind and body with scientific rigor. Her work and our discussion are applicable to women and men of all ages and walks of life. Read the full episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. It's hard to live expansively these days, with an open heart and an open mind. But is it possible?
"It's the daily practice of meditation without expectation. It's not a wish-fulfilling cow that if you meditate you'll have a great day. It's the practice of placing the identification on that meditation state as who you are."A loaded, joyful episode filled with satsang and conversation with my dear friend and fellow yogi Anandi Brownstein - a cinematographer and documentary director who shares her lived wisdom with us from a lifetime of meditating and growing up in the Himalayas of India. We surf on some profound concepts and share each of our unique perspectives. Nandi shares her thoughts on life and practice that we can all begin to think about for ourselves;➖cultivating inner expansiveness as a brilliant tool to move effortlessly in the world;➖the yogic work of purification and expansion;➖ maintaining peace as an individual;➖why confusion happens and how to get out of it and;➖not identifying with any limiting idea that confines you.She also reads a verse from Sri Nisaragadatta Maharaj's book of discourse called “I am That” and we discuss Josh Scheri's podcast “The Emerald”.Thanks for listening!

Steff Fenton (they/them) is a trans Christian speaker, writer, educator, and advocate who publicly shares the intersections of queerness and faith. Steff is passionate about creating safe spiritual spaces for LGBTIQA+ people and helping others cultivate a more equitable and expansive faith. I asked Steff on the podcast because they get in the way of all the prejudice I was taught in the faith culture I grew up in. Steff is transgender and is not only Christian, but has co-founded and co-pastored a church, has a Masters of Divinity, and lets their faith shape their way of being in the world. Steff is an amazingly loving human being who longs to see everyone embraced for who they are. In this conversation Steff and I talk about their contrasting experiences of coming out within a church context, firstly around sexuality, and later around gender, and how those experiences highlight what the church often is and what it can be. We talk about exclusion and embrace and the effects those have on people. And we talk about the ways in which embracing those who are different from us, and particularly hearing the transgender voice, can give us a fuller and more beautiful picture of God. “What choices will lead me to greater integration and wholeness?” renowned author, meditation pioneer, and teacher Sharon Salzberg asks in her latest book, Real Life: The Journey from Isolation to Openness and Freedom. "We're told so many stories about who we are and what we are capable of that are given to us. They're not born of our own clear seeing,” she says. “Being able to step back from our conditioning and really question…When can I breathe? When do I feel like I can't breathe? One of the things we discover is that it's not through a certain feeling arising, like fear. It's through being enveloped in and overcome by it. So, we don't have to put ourselves down or be ashamed of what we feel. We can see that the way that we relate to our thoughts, feelings, and sensations is going to make a big difference.” In our conversation, we explore invaluable tools to reframe that relationship, and in so doing, discover the expansiveness that is always available to us.
In this episode of "The Art of Alchemy" podcast, Natasha de Grunwald shares her personal experiences of surrendering control and being present, which has brought her a feeling of expansiveness. Natasha invites listeners to join her in exploring their own expansiveness and embracing their edges in her upcoming workshop. She also reflects on areas of her life where she is learning to let go of control and emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between action and surrender. In honor of the holiday of Passover, Rabbi Joshua discusses the concept of leaving the narrow places, a key theme, as it relates to our thinking around homelessness and potential solutions. We need to have a more expansive approach to using empty building for housing; empty storefronts for mental health clinics; closed nursing homes, hospitals and motels for bridge and interim housing. Locusts on the menu? Doesn't sound very appealing to me. Good thing we are only using the analogy of eating locusts in this week's episode on the Life Coaching Classroom podcast. In this episode, I'm discussing what it TRULY means to be LIMITLESS. To be Free. To be Expansive. As a Virgo Sun and Virgo Stellium (hello Earthly grounded energy LOL) this is something I've really struggled a lot with - DESPITE the fact that I *KNOW* that we are all Infinite Beings of Source Consciousness and that we ARE the Universe having a Human Experience.Despite this, my Virgo ass has struggled a lot to truly lean into EXPANSIVENESS - and this has been a HUGE learning and transformational curve for me.To just - let go.Sure, I took a leap of faith when I left my marriage 4 years ago with no money, no job, a young 3 year old daughter and a brand new business. But I trusted in my VISION - that I wanted a better life and that I couldn't spread my wings to the full extent if I remained in that relationship. So, I leapt. We ALL have Free Will. We are ALL Creators of the Universe - we CREATE our own realities. Now, this isn't a podcast about the BORING AS FUCK book & film, The Secret, that "spiritual teachers" like to push as some gospel on Law of Attraction and Manifestation. The Secret is kindergarten level when it comes to Manifestation. This podcast episode is about YOU seeing YOU as the Creator. As the entire fucking Universe! That you get to choose limitless expansion - or not.You cannot sit there and moan about your circumstances, your experiences, the time it's taking to do XYX or the fact you had a shitty childhood (yes, that is one massive Truth Bomb right there, and I know it'll be painful for some to hear, but Truth IS Medicine) - YOU CREATED EVERYTHING.Your Soul chose everything before coming Earth Side.Your Higher Consciousness chose THE BEST LAUNCHPAD for your growth before you came Earth Side.YOU CHOSE IT ALL. YOU CREATED IT ALL.We can ALL be limitless. It is our DIVINE Birthright after all.To be limitless. To be free. To be expansive. How do religion, mysticism, and metaphysics dance together? Do they? Or are they separate paths of exploring our relationship with the Divine? I grew up Jewish, more culturally so than religiously observant, but always felt a draw to explore the deeper experiences of humanity. That has been a continuing and compelling force in my life. ON COACHING | Where do teaching and coaching overlap and how do they differ? Which skills transfer? Many of our team members were educators for years before they decided to become executive coaches. Former teachers/current Novus Global coaches Amanda Jaggard, Laura Leffelaar, Randy Poon, and Joseph Thompson discuss the venn diagram of teaching students and coaching adults. While the disposition required of great coaches and teachers is similar--an unconditional belief in their clients or students--the approach is not the same. The group discusses artificial limits, inquiry-based coaching, and how the ability to impart knowledge effectively in a classroom is a different art than the ability to ask the right open-ended questions to "unleash the genius" in a client. Novus Global is a tribe of elite executive coaches who work with Fortune 500 Companies, Professional Athletes, World Renowned Artists and Business Leaders to create lives, teams and companies that go beyond high-performance.Book a free consultation with a Novus Global coach here: http://novus.global/now/ This podcast is produced by Rainbow Creative with Matthew Jones as Senior Producer and Jeremy Davidson as Editor and Audio engineer. All of us have some version of this thought, “I don't have enough time”, Even if it is really true that you have a task that will take an hour and you only have 30 minutes, your brain will lose focus, be frustrated and not be helpful if you think and believe that you don't have enough time. What if there is another way and you just have to teach the brain how. What if this other way felt more expansive, made work more fun and helped you to be more productive?
Show notes Episode 33 “Capacity - moving to expansiveness – neuroscience, neurobiology and the social engagement system” with our guest Pamela Stokes There is a connection far beyond our bodies. There is a part of the neuroscience and the neurobiology that is called the social engagement system. And it's a grouping of five different things in our physiology that allows us to connect with ourselves. But also to connect with each other This week we get into the neuroscience of our connections with one another and we figure out how to begin the healing process for our society. Some topics include: the science of brain and body, trauma based therapeutic movement and brain training, movement and neuroplasticity, mindful motion, the insula cortex and how it is the key that allows us to connect with others. This episode is really big on more than one level. It’s a little over 90 minutes, but it’s packed with techniques that will help our world. Trust me when I say, you don’t want to miss a minute of it. We begin with the question of how to get out of operating from full capacity mode (meaning we all have so much on our “plate” from responsibilities, to worries and thoughts, to trauma, fear, and pain) and unable to be open to others, to getting to an embracing, loving, giving state; getting back to social engagements and selfless constructs, after so much we have been through. Also, can trauma actually be beneficial? How can we be there for each other (as a society) when we are all in pain? Who gets to go first in being heard and cared for, when we all need comforting and help? Today, we have some answers that will begin this process. Guys, everything is going to be OK! - more than OK, actually! to connect with Pamela https://www.linkedin.com/in/moveintoresilience/ https://www.moveintoresilience.com/about-pamela/ Let's connect! About The EpisodeIn Expansiveness of Grief, I’m bringing you a very special and personal conversation. I’m actually inviting you to listen in on a pretty typical conversation I have quite often with my longtime friend, Shongah Taruza. We explore the impact of compounding loss and the physical aspects of grief work.Shonagh and I have been book swapping for a decade and a half now, constantly learning and sharing with one another, so I’m not surprised we ended up talking books in today’s show including How to Be an Anti-Racist by Dr. Ibram X Kendi and My Grandmothers Hand by Resma Menakem I want to thank Justice Leaders Collaborative for support of today's show. Jivasu’s (Pradeep Kumar) teachings are called Naturality. Naturality is to ‘to live according to our nature’ and ‘walk our own path’. The core of Jivasu’s teachings is about the fear of death (and life) and the emergence of the ego in response to that fear. The ego helps us to escape the fear of death and promises us an illusory immortality. This illusory immortality is needed during the early stages of life but we must eventually go beyond the ego in order to experience freedom from fear. Born in 1956, Jivasu was trained as a pediatrician in India. He and his wife, Karen (his teacher) served in the remote villages of Uttarakhand Himalayas for thirteen years. While living at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, India, he experienced his first awakening, which came to full fruition twelve years later in an experience of ‘wholeness’ and ‘freedom from the psychological fear of the death.’ Eventually the process culminated in the realization that death is an illusion. The mind and body die but consciousness is immortal. Currently, he is teaching courses about Naturality (Sahajta) and the fear of death and life in Canada, India, Ireland, Barbados and Dominica. He also teaches acupuncture courses for the Contemporary Acupuncture Program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He conceived Expansiveness Meditation (Braham dhyan) and the Breath of Dissolution (Kalajayi pranayam), two elements of the Naturality teachings. He also teaches that all spiritual experiences have a biological basis. When the brain is cleared of its memories and emotional scars, it will connect to and clearly reflect the universe within and around us. Jivasu is the author of many books including: Meditation: A Path of Relaxation, Awareness and Expansion of Awareness, From Death to Immortality, Naturality, Science of Naturality, and Offerings in Longing and Love. Listen as Jivasu and I talk about: How a 5 year stay at a Hindu monastery helped him to overcome his fear of dying How Fear prevents you from discovering your purpose Why having a healthy identity is essential to discovering yourself How to know your natural personality by examining your body and asking certain questions The stages of enlightenment that come from Naturality The feelings you get from living out your purpose within your true nature How each of us must open our own, unique door to fully explore one's Naturality and purpose Why religious, group settings prevent one from fully understanding their purpose How his Eastern and Western cultural help him to discover his Naturality Why he has decided to be a family man instead of a monk Thoughts on good teaching Why he doesn't care about a following How to educate children in today's culture Why one should take the path of least resistence to discover Purpose Why yoga and meditation are necessary tools to get started in Naturality Why one no longer needs yoga and meditation once they are living their Naturality The science of yoga, meditation, and Naturality Why science is the universal language of the world How to get involved in Jivasu's upcoming immersive, Naturality courses around the world Listen as Jivasu leads a guided Inner Light meditation to conclude the episode --------------Resources Mentioned: --------------------- The Rise of Superman - Steven Kotler The Denial of Death - Ernest Becker Strange Order of Things -Antonio Demassio A Brief History of Everything - Ken Wilbur Finding Your True Personal Nature Questionaire - developed by Jivasu Find Naturality Programs around the world, contact Jivasu, and join the movement @ http://www.naturalitypath.com/ Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... Donna Stoneham, Ph.D. is a master executive coach, transformational leadership expert, author, activist and speaker. For twenty-five years, she’s guided several thousand Fortune 1000 leaders, teams, and organizations unleash their power to thrive™ in work and life. Donna's award-winning book, The Thriver’s Edge: Seven Keys to Transform the Way You Live, Love, and Lead was named by BuzzFeed as “Nine Awesome Books for Your Kick-Ass Career.” She is also a contributor in two books, The Coaching Code: Practical Tips for Cracking the Code and Building a Successful Coaching Business and Ask Coach (October, 2016). As one of the world's leading coaches, Donna will be featured in the upcoming full length documentary, Leap! The Coaching Movie Podcast Highlights Who is Donna Stoneham? Donna is fully committed to do everything in her power to help people work and thrive. Just over 50% of the people in the US believe they are thriving despite the fact the US has the world’s biggest economy. Seven out of ten people that go to work in the US are not engaged in their jobs. If you are one of the people that is thriving, it’s important to pay it back and pay it forward. Donna became very sick while running two businesses and completing her graduate degree, but that trial lead to her discovering the truth of what her mission really is. Where does the courage to make that decision come from? “At what price, freedom. At what price, responsibility.” Donna felt the financial freedom and sacrifices of being an entrepreneur outweighed the benefits of working for someone else. After getting sick, Donna decided that anything she worked on had to be in the service of a deeper mission. What constitutes thriving? There are seven keys to Thriving: Trust, Humility, Resilience, Inner Direction, Vision, Expansiveness, and Responsibility. Many of us have a limited perspective and are unable to see the full landscape of what is possible. You must be willing to change and learn if you want to enlarge your perspective. Balance is what makes life rich and robust. If all you do is focus on your work all the time, you are unable to grow. Use your intuition as your inner compass, the trick is to discern your intuition from your ego. You have to be willing to make the shift from “what can I get?” to “what can I give?” How did you evolve to that level of thinking? There are two ways you can learn or grow, either through inspiration or desperation. Equal parts reflection and reaction are important to growth in the right direction. Having a reflective practice as part of your day is crucial. Does business factor in thriving? Once you live your own personal mission, the sky's the limit on what you can achieve and accomplish. Reconnect yourself to your mission and purpose daily. Before undertaking something, ask yourself “does this align with my mission?” and trust that the universe will send you an opportunity that will be a better fit. "True nobility isn’t about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you used to be." Dr. Wayne Dyer Martin tackles this Mind Bullet Monday solo and labels it a bit of a hybrid episode since he bridges concepts and ideas from a couple prior episodes. This episode is on the heels of the synchronicity/serendipity episode where Martin and Henry compare theories on ways to create an increased frequency of such events in our lives. Martin then adds some of the late, great Dr. Wayne Dyer's thoughts via his bestseller, The Power of Intention. Specifically where Dyer reviews the importance of aligning with the "FACE" of the "Creative" source. In his book, Dr. Dyer spells out the "Seven Faces of Intention" Creativity, Kindness, Love, Beauty, Expansiveness, Abundance and Receptivity and how Dr. Dyer believed deeply that creating alignment / "matching up" with sources "Faces" of energy was essential. Martin then takes the entire process a step further, and perhaps makes it sound/concrete by recommending to the listener that they focus upon and TRACK just ONE "FACE" at a time for four weeks following the habit factor method. This one step would mimic the process Benjamin Franklin used that was recently recounted on the a prior episode where Ben tracked his behaviors (habits) to create VIRTUES! Charisma—the real McCoy—has unique qualities: Expansiveness, energy, joy, creativity. It is not only a way of being which calls forth all the powers at your disposal— from pragmatic to inspirational, from intellectual to intuitional. It's a natural way of relating to yourself, those you work with and play with—even to the planet itself. At its core, charisma is disarmingly simple yet immeasurably complex. Living your life with charisma is nothing more than living from a full and honest outpouring of individuality—that spirit that is unique to you. This unique nature, which every one of us has, most of us have to discover within us. And discovering it can be a lot of fun. How? In a myriad of ways—from the simple and playful, to the infinitely profound. Stop for a moment and think of the colors you like best, for instance. Think of how you choose to have your hair cut, or maybe the kind of make-up you wear (or choose NOT to wear). Charisma is explicit in the way you think and talk, in the deep values you embody, the dreams you dream and the things you create—whether they be works of art, intellectual or physical feats, or just your day-to-day ways of being. Charisma is also evident in the rhythms and fluctuations of your energies. How different are you on the tennis court, to when you hold a child in your arms, produce a piece of work, get involved in an intellectual discussion, or embrace a lover? In each of these circumstances, so long as you are true to yourself, you will have charisma—the originality of your essential being shines through. Connecting with that essence—your soul—coming to respect it and courageously choosing to live from it, brings charisma to birth naturally. Sometimes this can feel challenging; frequently it's exciting. It can even be amazing. As your innate charisma emerges, the externals of your life—the clothes, the cars, your preferences, the way you move, how you relate to your world around you—cease to be anything you have to think about or try to make happen. They unfold and develop naturally, beautifully, mysteriously—even organically—from within. And they become ever more honest and potent expressions of who, at the very core of your being, you are. Whatever forms or shapes your natural charisma takes, one quality permeates every facet of it: Aliveness. Radiant well-being develops, together with a sense of profound respect for yourself, just as you are. The more you dare to allow your unique nature to shine through, the more charisma you will have. And the simpler everything in your life becomes. In the 21st century crazy world we live in, we are bombarded by a litany of challenges. These include breathing polluted air, to interacting with the corrupt mainstream media trying to sell us things we don't need or want at prices we can ill afford as well as publishing false reports about events occurring in the world. All of this can feel as though it's contriving to interfere with our process of unfolding. I suggest that you take a decision now not to let any of this get in the way of discovering the essence of who YOU are. I believe that each of designed to become a creator in a new world—for ourselves as well as for the planet as a whole. I hope you will join me in the process of charisma unfolding and in discovering who, in essence, you are at the deepest levels of your being. For along with all the chaos and horror, suffering and loss that surrounds us, there is also great promise for a new way of living. Has there ever been a more perfect moment for your charisma to come into its own—both for yourself and those you care for? Join me in exploring the power of charisma . Set yourself free.
What gives you charisma? The Chanel suit you wear? The car you drive? The way you've been taught to use your body or speak your words? Not really. Mentors. Teachers. Gurus. Friends. Sponsors. What do all of these have in common? They are people who help us find the way. Whether its the way through a specific issue, as a sponsor does with substance abuse; or in a big way- how to walk though life as the most open and full version of ourselves. Sometimes they come to us and stay with us for long periods of time and sometimes they pop in for a moment of a time and then disappear. On this podcast, we have been fortunate to speak with several people who taught us something, who in some ways showed us the way. To share one of those interviews with you feels like the most appropriate way to start off this new journey as “American Desis.” So today we are pleased to drop our interview with the wonderful Gotham Chopra. Gotham is a first generation Indian American who is now a filmmaker/story teller and while he may be well known as being Deepak Chopra’s son, in reality he is so much more. He had a big year in 2015, directing two documentaries about two legendary sports figures, Muse and the The Little Master. Muse is about the American cultural icon in Kobe Bryant, and The Little Master is about an Indian Diety Sachin Tendulkar. We start the interview at this point asking whether it was important to tell a story from both American and South Asian culture, and from there we dive right in to identity. We chart how these projects got started and learn why Gotham may need to be called the godfather of cricket in America. We explore the commonalities between these Kobe and Sachin, and how the exploration of “greatness” is the spine between both. We then chart Gotham’s personal growth from a Journalist to a filmmaker, and how his Indian identity influenced those transitions. We discuss how he changed the spelling of his name to move further in his career, and yet as the founder of "Graphic India", feels a responsibility and passion to represent his heritage in a more grounded way. We speak on his transition from identifying as "South Asian" to "American", which leads to the hosts fascination with Gotham's ability to hold space for both identities without conflict, and how he manages to do so. Finally, the conversation moves to his son- the next generation- and how he goes about treating this next generation, as well as his responsibilities to it. A discussion will drop in a few days. So please go to the website and comment in the forum. Also feel free to tweet us @AmericanDesis, or respond to our Facebook page at "American Desis Podcast".
