About a year ago, I shared my experiences at my first all-women retreat cultivated and led by my friend and fellow coach, Allison Crow. I talked about how I had avoided women's retreats, fearing that I would not be able to connect or create connections with other women. But I went nonetheless and learned more about my avoidance and how I related with other women. Recently, I made another huge move—I went back to camp. Here's what happened. In this episode, I share my experience of going back to camp. I explain how I didn't get hung up on being perceived as antisocial and put my desire to rejuvenate above all else. I also describe how I stayed present with my fellow campers, spent time with people, and showed up open. “I showed up open and took care of myself—saved myself—I always have. But this time, it wasn't because I had to, but because I could; because I'm worthy of care, and so are you.” - Karen Goldfinger Baker This week on the Trauma Hiders Club Podcast: ● My return to camp● Why I avoided going to women's retreats● My fear of being perceived as the worst type of woman● How I showed up on my recent camping trip● Being worthy of care Related Episodes: ● Writing Your Way Home with Allison Crow● Embracing Negative Emotions with Allison Crow● Sisterhood and Belonging Where High Achievers Get Through Shit - TOGETHER Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Trauma Hiders Club ‘The Podcast' with Karen Goldfinger Baker. I am excited to share with all y'all wildflowers a conversation I have with my friend and fellow coach Allison Crow. Allison just released her new book Unarmored: Finding Home in the Wild Edges of Being Human. Allison was raised a devout Christian in the south, Texas. Although not raised mormon, Allison has experienced her own faith crisis. I know you will love our discussion and we ebb and flow about life and heartbreak and healing and busting out of the "being a made up woman my religion taught me to be," type of thinking. Allison Crow, M.Ed, is a Life and Self-Leadership coach for small business owners and executives. She has been leading, teaching, speaking, writing, creating, and coaching in one form or another since the mid-1990s. For years, she was a hard-lined performance and sales coach motivated by outside forces and an excruciating need for approval. Now, instead of being driven by hard financial goals and lifeless quotas, Allison has an unconventional and connected practice where delicious and thought provoking conversations are centered around meeting yourself deeply. She helps her clients compassionately work with emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that are natural but often bypassed parts of our human selves. Allison specializes in IFS-informed coaching, deep inner work, creative expression, and building the skills of courageous emotional presence and self-trust. Allison lives in the hill country outside of Austin, Texas, with her husband of fifteen years and her rescued dogs, Leroy Brown and Clementine. She is often seen with a stack of journals, a paintbrush and watercolors, with her phone in her hand, creating and connecting on social media, or floating in the backyard pool she calls her “church.” WWW.ALLISONCROW.COM https://allisoncrow.com/unarmoredthebook/
I've discussed The Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo with hundreds of people of all ages in my career, and this discussion with Allison Crow helped me look at this inspiring painting in a completely new way. In this episode, we talk knowing ourselves, being present with our pain, our emotions, and all of our parts, and the beauty and healing power of connection. She holds a Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and received her Internal Family Systems skills training from the IFS Institute. Her book, Unarmored: Finding Home in the Wild Edges of Being Human, is scheduled for release in December 2022. Allison joins me today to discuss her book and her relationship with writing. She describes her childhood, the environment she grew up in, and her ADHD diagnosis at 50. She explains why a life built on dopamine hits is unsustainable and elaborates on how building slow, boring habits improved her life. She also highlights how being self-centered is one of the most loving things you can do for others and underscores how writing helps us remember who we are. “Writing helps me remember who I am. We live in a world of forgetting, and writing helps me remember—it takes my inside out instead of putting something from the outside in.” - Allison Crow This week on the Trauma Hiders Club Podcast: The first books in Allison's life that stuck with her Allison's relationship with writing How the way Allison dresses reflects the environment she grew up in How Allison paints with words in Unarmored and why it isn't for everyone Writing as a nurturing practice and how Allison discovered the power of words How writing helps us remember who we are Growing up in a volatile environment of love and verbal violence How writing can help sort through the chaos of life A reading from Allison's Unarmored Why building a life and career on dopamine hits is unsustainable Doing low, slow, and boring work and the power of habits Creating a loving, compassionate culture of sacred willingness and intentional doing Pound, beat, stomp, slap, and shake and the wisdom of fire ants Why being self-centered is leadership Coming home to myself Resources Mentioned: Book: The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life by Thomas Moore Book: The Last Picture Show by Larry McMurty Book: Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls Book: Succulent Wild Woman (25th Anniversary Edition): Dancing with Your Wonder-full Self by SARK Book: Becoming by Michelle Obama Book: Only 10s 2.0: Confront Your To-Do List and Transform Your Life by Mark Silverman Related Content: Embracing Negative Emotions with Allison Crow Connect with Allison Crow: Allison Crow Website The Better Life Better Work Show Allison Crow on LinkedIn Allison Crow on Instagram Allison Crow on Facebook Allison Crow on YouTube Where High Achievers Get Through Shit - TOGETHER Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Trauma Hiders Club ‘The Podcast' with Karen Goldfinger Baker. I went to a women's retreat recently. This is huge, considering I avoid women's retreats: them being specifically for women triggers several parts of me. But by going to this camp cultivation experience— masterfully created and facilitated by my friend and fellow coach, Allison Crow—in Dripping Springs, Texas, I learned so much about my avoidance and how I relate with women. In this episode, I share what I learned from attending a women's retreat. I describe the first few years I went to overnight camp and how fear of rejection fuels my avoidance of women's retreats. I also explain how I was able to relate with the other women in the camp and highlight the importance of women helping other women. “I don't know when I'll be at the next women's retreat, but I do know this: I have not been rejected. I am worthy of belonging and I belong.” - Karen Goldfinger Baker This week on the Trauma Hiders Club Podcast: Going to a women's retreat in hot-as-fuck Dripping Springs, Texas The first time I went to an overnight camp How fear of rejection colored my view on women's retreats How childhood sexual abuse impacted the way I relate to men and women The worst sister in the sisterhood of women Related Content: Embracing Negative Emotions with Allison Crow Where High Achievers Get Through Shit - TOGETHER Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Trauma Hiders Club ‘The Podcast' with Karen Goldfinger Baker. How do you “do” enoughness? What are the steps to come back to wholeness? Is it as simple as chanting a mantra on repeat? I am enough I am enough I am enough How's that working for you? Yeah, me neither. If you know me at all, you know I like practical. This episode is for the do-ers. Allison Crow is our guest. She's a brilliant transformational coach, but I didn't invite her on as an expert today. I'm curious about the practices that other thought-leaders do for themselves. What modalities are they using? What are their rituals? And what can we learn from them? Allison is IN the messy work of being in relation with all the parts of herself — especially the ones that nobody claps for. She shares her experience of Internal Family Systems, a modality she's currently immersed in. Important note: She's not teaching or talking as a practitioner, but as a woman on her own journey. I wanted you to experience the realness of someone in the work, and what that might bring up for you, as you listen. Hit play. See you on the other side. Show time, 18 min. In today’s episode, I talk with Allison Crow about how she embraces both high and low experiences in her life and business, and why she believes it’s so important to show her heart in her work. I talk a lot about energy in this show, how we “show up” and Allison is one of the few people I know who ALWAYS shows up as her true self. She’s so at home with who she is, and unafraid of what that might mean to others. It’s incredibly inspiring to me, especially because it has always been a challenge for me (workin’ on it)! And, of course, it hasn’t always come easily to her either. We also talk about her coaching membership program, who it’s for and why she shifted her business model from private coaching to a membership community. Adrenal fatigue led Allison Crow to get honest about changes she needed to make in her successful coaching business. In this raw and real episode of Get Gutsy, she shares her journey of transitioning from a business built around high-end coaching, retreats and “all the things” to a simple yet powerful membership model. This focus on ONE THING has helped her embrace a less is more and better is better energy. But it’s not all roses and rainbows in any kind of business model. There are new challenges and new messes to clean up. And new levels of trust to develop. And new paradoxes to play with. Tune in to hear: What happens if less is more? If more is not better, but better is better? Dealing with churn and membership cancellations How there is no end to our reinvention and creation Her desire to be a transparent and unfiltered leader Taking a stand on having an authentic business behind the scenes on the logistics side and on the mystic side Getting in alignment to hear and listen to your own voice. I was really hoping that there was going to be a neat, tidy system for getting more comfortable in our own skin, something Marie Kondo-ish: throw this bit out, compartmentalise that, and Ta-Da! Spoiler alert: there is no system. Ok, so I had actually figured that out on my own, but I thought wild artist, intuitive life & business coach, and magical unicorn, Allison Crow, might, just might, have a system. It was worth a shot, right? I don't know anyone more comfortable in their own skin than Allison - except maybe my nine-year-0ld daughter, who just took a series of selfies on my iPhone, dancing on the kitchen table (that's my girl). I asked Allison to talk about her metaphorical striptease - her journey of shedding layer after layer of perfectionitis, and being led by how she was "supposed to" look, work and live in the world. I came to our conversation with so many questions: How did you let go of all the performing and the pretending? How did you just surrender all the BS and be yourself? And how do you 'do' surrendering, and letting go? Any tips? (The achiever in me really wanted to know. And yes, I do see the humour and irony in my line of questioning. Bless.). This lovingly-made episode is the result of my deep curiosity and Allison's straight-talking wisdom. It is not linear and there is nothing compartmentalised about it. There is no 3-step plan. Allison talks about... How she lets go of over-identifying with achievement and shiny objects How she handles her fears that people will "un-choose" her if she is her real, wild self Her ongoing conversation with her inner whisper, and what 'surrendering' means for her Her 'to feel' list and other practices to try I am so excited to share this nourishing, soulful and VERY ADULT conversation with you. Irreverent priestess with a humongous heart. A modern medicine woman using deep coaching, creativity, intuition. Wild Artist Allison is simply one of my most favourite people on the planet, and I LOVED recording this episode! I couldn't have a Podcast and not invite her as a guest, and I'm releasing this a week ahead of schedule because I just can't sit on it any longer! Allison is the one person that I often suggest people check out when they talk to me about their own concerns around how they show up in the world, and whether they can make any kind of living through their own creativity and by freely expressing theirselves. Allison does exactly that, with zero filters. She lights up my Facebook feed every day in rich colour, in both pictures and words, and shows it all! She is also one of the most creative people I have ever met. Hold on to your seats and enjoy the ride! She doesn't hold back! “Art washes away from the soul the dust of every day life” (Picasso). What is it like to have art transform you? Allison Crow joins the show to talk about her painting process, getting back on the wagon and why she sees the down time as foreplay for her next project. Brain Exploding painting by […]
Welcome to episode #83 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. There is no doubt that this is now, officially, my favourite Podcast of the year. I get to turn this show over to you - the community - to share your thoughts on the year that was and the year ahead. I was blown away by the diverse voices that took part in this Yuletide Log episode. There are men and women from all over the world, but even more fascinating is that there are more than a few who are not even Marketing, Communications or Advertising professionals - just people listening and learning. That's probably the highest level of praise one can hope for. I received a few additional audio comments post-recording which I will play in the coming weeks - so, if you're interested, you can still add your thoughts and commentary to the community. Here's how. Allow me to take this last opportunity to wish you and yours a very Happy Holiday and a healthy and safe New Year. I'll also direct you over to the Twist Image Holiday Greeting - Share 2007. In the meantime, let the show play in the background as you take a break to celebrate with your family and loved ones.
