THE WORKFollow Break Generational Trauma, One Trauma at a Time“Healing is a daily event. You can't ‘go somewhere' to behealed: you must go inward to be healed. This means a dailycommitment to doing the work.”—Dr. Nicole LePera, The Holistic PsychologistOur purpose is not to create a perfect life for our kids or ourpeople. It is to show our humanness and to raise our kids toknow they are deeply loved by their deeply imperfect parents. And to show our people we are flawed humans who are doingthe best with what we know, right now.Our work is to become aware of our traumas and triggersand the impacts they can have, if unchecked, and then todecide which ones have the biggest impact on our people.Have you ever met an adult with no issues? No parentissues or people-pleasing, boundary issues or control issues?Me, neither... Not sure I want to or need to, either. What if, each year, we focused on different parts ofourselves instead of tackling all our trauma and hoping we canbe perfect for those close to us?It can be so overwhelming, when you begin work in yourlife with a coach, mentor, therapist, guide, or pastor. Instead, pick one thing, and focus on that! Shift that! Grow in that area! This year, my big focus will be:While I am doing this for me, I know____________________________ will also be hugely impacted. The reason I choose this for my yearly goal is:When I feel like I am not making real progress, I willpay attention to mini-magical moments by:Actions I will take include:My triggers around this trauma are:I want to show up for my people in the following way:By showing my people my human, imperfect side, Iam giving them a gift of:Focusing on one per year will shift the all-or-nothingthinking. It will calm the inner rebel and alsoUnFollow that “in order to be great humans, we mustbe healed” false narrative.More of us talking about what we are healing, and why, ishow we collectively change and encourage others. Throughbravery and belief, not shame and perfectionism. It is only by living we truly heal! So, let's live, lassies and lads, and show our imperfectselves as we do it.Get your copy of Melissa's bestselling book, UnFollow: Question Everything with Excitement, and download the FREE WORKBOOK!Curious about Group Coaching? ENTER THE 1 YEAR Anniversary Celebration to WIN a FREE 90-MIN PLOT STRATEGY SESSION!DOWNLOAD "THE WRITE MINDSET" FREE WORKBOOK from Write It Scared!Writing is challenging enough without beating ourselves up along the way, right? In this episode of The Write It Scared Podcast, I'm getting personal—celebrating the podcast's one-year milestone (woohoo!) and opening up about a topic that deserves more honest conversation: being a perimenopausal writer. If you've experienced brain fog, trouble concentrating, or felt like your creativity took an unexpected vacation, trust me—you're not alone. I share a bit of my own journey navigating perimenopause, offering encouragement and practical strategies for dealing with these temporary (but very real!) cognitive struggles. Then, we tackle another sneaky writing struggle—procrastination vs. percolation. Not every pause or hesitation is avoidance, and I'll break down how to recognize the difference between genuinely procrastinating and when you're actually percolating (aka your brain needs processing time).Plus, I introduce a special free resource, “The WRITE Mindset” workbook, designed specifically to help you shift those unhelpful inner critic thoughts into positive actions.Above all, this episode is about reminding you to be gentle with yourself. Writing isn't always linear or easy—but with patience, self-compassion, and the right support, you've absolutely got this.Episode Breakdown00:00 – Let's stop beating ourselves up (please!)00:23 – Welcome back to Write It Scared! (One year already? Yay!)01:31 – The truth about being a perimenopausal writer (because someone has to say it)06:54 – Procrastination vs. Percolation: what's really holding you back?13:35 – Final thoughts and what's coming nextFinal ThoughtsIf there's one takeaway from this episode, I hope it's this: your struggles—whether hormonal, creative, or somewhere in between—are temporary, normal, and manageable. Keep engaging with your story, lean into support when you need it, and give yourself the kindness and grace you'd offer a friend.Happy writing, friends—you're doing great, even when it feels messy!Have a comment or idea about the show? I have chosen to goon retreats, to call my sponsor, and to be a sponsor. It's action. It was my thought to call the hotline. It was my decision toget in Sheri's car. What are you thinking about now?Who are you blaming? What are you blaming?Maybe you had a rough childhood. Maybe you wereabused. Maybe you lost a parent young. Maybe it is none ofthose, and yet you still know there is more to this ONE.Life.Maybe the victim mentality was taught or learned, and maybeit was neither. They are not addicted todrugs, alcohol, sex, or money. Often, they are addicted topleasing people, to perfectionism, to busyness—things thatare quite literally as deadly as my addiction.Often, they blame the kids' sports schedules and theirfamily for stepping on their boundaries. They claim it'sbecause they have the job they have and they can't change. They tell me they were born in a certain state and they cannot“just move.”What if all that changed just by taking some actions ofresponsibility and not blaming your kids and parents orbowing down to every societal norm we have been fed? What is one action you can do today, and for the nextseven days, you can repeat it without fail?If one action could change your ONE.Life in a positiveway, what would it be?As you begin to answer these questions, do it with thecloud of excitement over you.
