In this week's episode, I sit down with my friend Julie Honeycutt, a licensed professional counselor, certified IFS therapist, and approved clinical consultant. Julie has been integrating faith and counseling for over 20 years, and in this conversation, we explore how our attachment styles, parts, Enneagram, and developmental stages all shape our prayer life and spiritual connection. Julie shares that our attachment patterns and spiritual experiences are deeply linked, and how IFS offers a pathway to spirituality and how our different parts, even those with doubts We explore the idea that prayer doesn't have to look a certain way. It can show up in movement, in gardening, in painting, or even in those “texting prayers” we send up throughout the day. As Julie says, “What would it be like if our prayer life could reflect the unique way that God made us?” Julie also introduces the idea of the “levels of faith” and how parts of us may sit at different levels. Some of our parts may still hold early beliefs that we've outgrown, but they are still worthy of attention and care. We talk about: How our parts have different attachment styles in prayer Why anxious parts often get exiled in spirituality The connection between the Enneagram, personality, and prayer How our developmental stage impacts how we experience faith Why meeting ourselves in our prayer life without shame changes everything How gardening and movement can be a spiritual practice Julie reminds us that all parts are welcome: “Even that part is welcome.” About Julie: Julie Honeycutt is a licensed professional counselor, certified IFS therapist for over 15 years and an Approved Clinical Consultant for the IFS Institute. She's been practicing the integration of faith and counseling for over 20 years in her private practice as well as in workshops and retreats. Through stillness-of-mind exercises (what the early Christians called hesychasm), she guides her clients in learning how to discern God over the crowd of voices inside all our parts! And, she has a myriad of free writings and resources on her website. You may have heard me mention IFS, or Internal Family Systems, in podcast episodes before. My guest today is going to go into much more detail, but briefly, IFS is a powerful and compassionate therapeutic framework for understanding the different “parts” within ourselves—like the inner critic, the protector, the people-pleaser. Through IFS, we can learn how to befriend and heal those parts so we can show up more fully as our true Self. I'm pretty fascinated by IFS and have seen how transformative it can be in helping people truly heal and find more peace in their lives. In my research, I came across a therapist who not only feels the same but has fully stepped into the intersection of IFS and neurodivergence. So of course, I had to invite them onto the show. In today's episode, you'll meet Jude Carn, a certified Level 3 Internal Family Systems (IFS) psychotherapist, international consultant, and passionate advocate for neurodiversity. Jude brings a powerful blend of lived experience and deep professional expertise to their work, and in this episode, we're exploring how IFS can be a transformative model for neurodivergent individuals and the families who support them. In our conversation, Jude walks us through the core concepts of IFS, explains how this framework can be especially healing for neurodivergent people—who often grow up feeling misunderstood, judged, or exiled—and shares insights on how IFS offers a respectful, empowering approach to trauma that allows each person to move at their own pace. Jude explains that recognizing and befriending one's own parts can lead to deeper self-acceptance and a better relationship with ourselves. IFS has been transformative for me, and it's really powerful to start from a place of knowing that you are not broken. Imagine what a difference it would make for all our neurodivergent kids to fundamentally know that they are not broken—and that no parts are bad. IFS can be a truly affirming starting point. I hope you get as excited about it as I do after this conversation. About my guest Jude Carn is a level 3 certified IFS psychotherapist and approved consultant with the IFS Institute. Jude lives in the UK and works online internationally with some clients and mainly in supporting other therapists through supervision and consultation. Jude is a late diagnosed AuDHDer and an advocate for the recognition of neurodiversity as part of the human experience, rather than disorder.Jude creates and runs training, conference talks and groups supporting therapists to provide better support and care to their neurodivergent clients. She is genderqueer, and uses she/they pronouns. She co-hosts a podcast, Queering IFS which sets out other questions taken for granted norms around heteronormativity and neuronormativity as these present themselves in the world of therapy.Jude lives at home in rural Sussex with her two dogs and long term partner. You'll learn: What IFS (Internal Family Systems) is and how it helps individuals foster deep self-acceptance through exploring inner parts Why every coping strategy has a purpose, often driven by protectors working to shield exiled parts that carry pain How recognizing and building relationships with internal parts can lead to profound healing and growth How IFS allows respectful trauma exploration at one's own pace Why neurodivergent individuals may especially benefit from IFS's flexible, creative, and affirming approach Ideas for how parents and therapists can help their children understand and connect with their parts Resources: Jude's website, Anchored in Self Queering IFS Podcast Inneractive Cards Books for kids, teens, and adults about IFS No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma & Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwart, PhD Learn more about your ad choices. That Wellness Podcast with Natalie Deering: Internal Family Systems with a Twist
What if your insomnia isn't a problem to fix, but a part of you that needs your attention? In this insightful and compassionate conversation, I'm joined by somatic IFS and leadership coach Katie LaCelle to explore the deep connection between sleeplessness and our inner system. Katie shares her personal journey with chronic insomnia and how Internal Family Systems (IFS) offered a radically different way of relating to wakefulness—one that invites curiosity, compassion, and presence. Together, we explore how insomnia can be understood through the lens of parts work, what happens when protector parts activate at night, and why asking “Who's awake?” might be more helpful than trying to fall back asleep. Katie also offers grounded techniques and nervous system tools to support better sleep—not by overriding parts, but by listening to them. Whether you struggle with occasional restlessness or chronic insomnia, this episode offers powerful insights into how we can meet our sleepless parts with kindness—and finally begin to rest. _____________________________ We Explore:
In this week's episode I welcome three guests--Robin Barre, Ann-Katrin Bockmann, and Kasra Mirzaie--to talk about IFS and working with teenagers. We explore how IFS often skips over this phase of life, both in how we work with clients and how we relate to our own inner adolescent parts. We tend to romanticize childhood or focus on early wounding, yet there's a lot of cringing and avoiding when it comes to the teenage years. Adolescence is where so much transformation happens. It's where meaning gets made. It's when parts start to emerge with passion, intensity, and voice. My guests are each doing beautiful work in the world to support teens. Our teens (and teen parts) need room to grow, roll their eyes, slam doors, and ask big existential questions. This episode makes space for and sense of it all. We talk about normalizing rebellion, exploring identity, meaning making, and listening deeply to the parts of ourselves and our teens who are still figuring it all out. We also talk how IFS can overlook the developmental and cultural realities of adolescence. This conversation left me feeling full of insight and hope. Speaking of hope, be sure to check out my extended interview with this trio over on The One Inside on Substack, where they each share what is giving them hope right now. In this episode, we explore: Why adolescence often gets skipped over in parts work What we miss when we pathologize normal adolescent development and behavior The meaning crisis and mental health crisis we are currently experiencing The difference between burdens and suffering that transforms Why validation is essential for connecting with teens How Self-Led parenting looks different during the teen years Questions to carry with you: What would it be like to revisit your inner teenager with curiosity? Which of your parts “woke up” during adolescence? What did you need then, and how might you offer it now? About my guests: Ann-Katrin Bockmann, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and speech therapist, certified IFS and Somatic IFS therapist, IFS approved clinical consultant and Co Lead Trainer for the IFS Institute. She works at the Institute of Psychology at Hildesheim University (Germany) and in private practice. Kasra Mirzaie is a licensed psychotherapist, research assistant, and teacher in Germany who works with people of all ages in diverse psychological, educational and medical contexts. Robin Barre is a Level 3 trained IFS psychotherapist and approved consultant. She also is a professional consultant for those who provide services for adolescents. I'm so thrilled to welcome Dick Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS), back to the podcast, as well as my friend Ocean, who brings her voice and lived experience to this important conversation. Today, we explore the intersection between IFS and the plural community--those living with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and OSDD (Other Specified Dissociative Disorders). What's the difference between DI parts and the IFS parts many of us talk about? How can we bridge misunderstandings between the IFS community and those living with more distinct parts? This conversation was deeply moving and healing. I'm so grateful to both Dick and Ocean for their honesty, wisdom, and compassion. In this episode, we explore: The differences and overlap between DI parts and IFS parts Why the plural community has sometimes felt unseen and misunderstood by IFS The harm in labeling parts as managers, firefightes and exiles The complicated relationship many survivors have with Self Energy Strategies for working with systems shaped by deep trauma Why trust, patience, and honoring every part is a prerequisite to healing Be sure to watch the extended video interview with Dick and Ocean over on our Substack. Favorite Quotes: “IFS was never meant to pathologize people. It was meant to honor the fact that all of us are multiple, and that those parts aren't what they seem.” — Dick Schwartz "There's a huge difference between saying, 'Your parts are managers, firefighters, and exiles,' and saying, 'I'm noticing some of your parts seem to be taking on these roles to protect you.'" — Ocean About Tiffany "Ocean" Morgan Tiffany Morgan (Ocean) is a Certified IFS therapist, consultant, and educator with lived experience of OSDD (Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder). On today's podcast, I chat with Dr. Irina Diyankova, certified IFS therapist, IFS clinical consultant, and Lead Trainer with the IFS Institute. We explore the fascinating intersection of IFS and neurodivergence, a topic she knows intimately from both her lived and professional experience. We talk about time blindness, sensory sensitivities, what gets mistaken for trauma but might be hardwiring, and how IFS therapists can differentiate. We also get into self-accommodation, the limits of coping skills, and why healing through IFS is a lifelong journey. I loved my conversation with Irina and felt uplifted and inspired by her beautiful Self Energy. You'll also find a gentle, creative meditation Irina led designed especially for neurodiverse folks to connect with parts of their nervous system. Bring crayons and curiosity. Key Takeaways: “Healing doesn't always bring rainbows and butterflies.” Irina talks about the moment she realized her nervous system challenges weren't just about unhealed trauma. How do you tell the difference between parts and hardwiring? Irina walks us through how she listens for what's left after unburdening and what that might mean. “Coping skills that work for others might not work for you—and that's not a failure.” Why traditional therapeutic approaches (like exposure therapy) can be harmful for neurodivergent clients—and what to do instead. “I have to accommodate myself.” Irina shares how self-acceptance and sensory regulation opened up a whole new window of tolerance. We also talk about Irina's upcoming book, Becoming an IFS Therapist: A Journey to One's Self, which offers practices and reflections for IFS therapists. In this episode I chat with Jeanne Catanzaro, an IFS therapist, educator, and author of Unburdened Eating: Healing Relationships with Food and Body. We talk diet culture, internal critics, and the societal pressure to view our bodies as projects. Legacy burdens, cultural messaging, and our protectors shape our relationship with food and body image. Jeanne explains how healing these parts with IFS can lead to a more compassionate and Self-Led approach to eating and wellbeing. Key Takeaways: Diet culture is deeply rooted in legacy burdens; how can we begin to unburden parts influenced by societal expectations? Many of us start the day with critical voices driving us—learning to identify and soothe these critics is a key first step. Healing our relationship with food begins with curiosity, not judgment. Self-led eating involves negotiating with parts and focusing on what your body needs in the present moment. Unburdened eating is not a diet—it's about building trust with our parts and moving away from perfectionism. About Jeanne Catanzaro: Jeanne Catanzaro is an IFS therapist, educator, and author specializing in helping individuals heal their relationships with food and body. Her new book, Unburdened Eating: Healing Relationships with Food and Body, offers a compassionate guide to transforming these dynamics through an Internal Family Systems lens. In addition to her role in helping to lead the IFS Institute, she offers workshops and retreats on Unburdened Eating and IFS. www.jeannecatanzaro.com Thank you to Pisgah Coaching Institute for sponsoring this episode. _______________________________________________________________________________ Watch video Clips from select episodes on The One Inside on YouTube Follow Tammy on Instagram @ifstammy and on Facebook at The One Inside with Tammy Sollenberger. This week's episode features Dr. Jeanne Catanzaro, who's a bit of an IFS rockstar. Jeanne has been one of the strongest voices in the IFS community in regard to food and body concerns, and I'm so thrilled to have her on the podcast! Just a little about her: Jeanne is a clinical psychologist who has specialized in the treatment of disordered eating and trauma for over twenty-five years. She trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing®, and eye movement-desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) before discovering the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Jeanne is known for her compassionate and intuitive appreciation of the relational dynamics, internal and external, that keep people stuck in painful relationships with food and their bodies. In addition to serving as a leader of the IFS Institute, Jeanne facilitates IFS consultation groups, workshops, and retreats on Unburdened Eating. Jeanne is also the author of Unburdened Eating, a wonderful book that just came out earlier this year. And she also wrote a really fantastic article for the IFS Institute (that we discuss in this episode) called IFS's Viewpoint on Dieting and Cultural Harm. This article explicitly states that the IFS Institute does not support intentional weight loss due to the harm it can cause. Throughout this week's episode, Jeanne and I touch upon: The differences between IFS and other therapy models in how they approach food and body concerns How diet culture perpetuates the belief that there's something wrong with your body The fact that all negative feelings about the body come from outside of us The importance of being curious toward our parts Having compassion toward all of our parts, including those who are trying to manage our bodies by focusing on food and weight What is “unburdened eating” The need for community when working on food and body concerns Jeanne also gives us some great advice in terms of how to start working on food and body concerns. She suggests that we ask ourselves the following questions: What would it be like if I wasn't always trying to fix my body? What would it be like if I wasn't always criticizing my body? What if my body wasn't a problem to be solved? Can I get curious about the parts of me that feel like my body needs to change? You might have already noticed parts surfacing just by reading those questions. When you can, take some time to really sit with and answer them. We cover a lot of important ground in this episode, and I'm just thrilled and honored to have one of the best on my show. A huge thanks to Jeanne for taking the time and for all of the wisdom she imparts. Check it out! Welcome back, dear listener. In today's episode, I got to have a very interesting conversation with my colleague Katie LaCelle. We talked about using Internal Family Systems Therapy to recover from insomnia, we talked about detoxing from early childhood survival habits of urgency and overwork, we talked about so many nuances of the mind-body process that I'm almost sure you'll see yourself in at least some part of our chat. My guest today is Mary Kruger, an IFS lead trainer and therapist specializing in addiction and eating disorders. Mary helped develop the IFS Level 2 training for addiction recovery and treatment. This episode is a re-release from Season 2. Episode Summary: In this episode Mary shares her own story of finding IFS and her personal experience of the healing power of its integration with the 12-step model. We explore: How can we shift the way we approach addiction, eating disorders, and shame? Have traditional approaches to addiction recovery, such as AA or 12-step programs, left us demonizing our behaviors rather than understanding them? What happens when we stop viewing addiction as a "moral failure" or "genetic defect" and instead see it as a system out of balance What role does shame play in maintaining cycles of addiction, and how can IFS help us unburden that shame? How can we learn to work with, not against, our addictive parts? Can group work enhance healing by reducing shame and helping us feel connected to others with similar struggles? One of my favorite quotes from the episode: "What if we stopped demonizing our addictive behaviors and instead asked, 'What are they trying to teach us?' When we befriend the parts of us that struggle, we unlock the door to true healing." Mary will host a workshop on October 10 and 11, 2024 with Life Architect on working with polarized parts. Having a waiting list of 20,000 people to take your training is a pretty good sign you're onto something important. That's the mixed blessing Dr. Richard Schwartz faces as interest in Internal Family Systems -- an innovative therapeutic approach to trauma and other mental disorders he developed -- continues to grow. The “family” in this case are the multiple parts of a person's psyche that, in Schwartz's view, need to listen to each other in order for people to overcome traumas and function well. “This is an alternative paradigm for understanding all kinds of what are seen as mental illnesses. Part of my goal is to bring this different perspective to all of these things that have been so medicalized,” he explains to host Shiv Gaglani. A welcome discovery of IFS is that among the parts, there is a core Self that can't be damaged and knows how to heal. As Schwartz explains it, IFS therapy works by opening enough space for the Self to pop out and start relating to, and leading, the other parts that may be critical, protective or play other roles. Don't miss this fascinating look at an evidence-based therapeutic approach that challenges conventional thinking and offers hope to patients with a long history of struggle. "There are many heavily diagnosed people who feel hugely relieved to know they're not sick."Mentioned in this episode: https://ifs-institute.com/

#126: Dave sits down with therapist Dick Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, to discuss how acknowledging and caring for the various "parts" within ourselves and others can serve us as individuals, business leaders, and social activists. Dick Schwartz is a well-known psychotherapist who founded Internal Family Systems in the 1980s, a treatment approach based upon the concept that humans are made up of "parts" that are guided by their own core essence or "self. " This idea runs counter to the long-held view that humans are mono-minded beings. Dick is the founder of the Center for Self Leadership which changed its name to the IFS Institute in 2019 and also leads workshops at the Cape Cod Institute. He is the author of several books and multiple articles. https://ifs-institute.com/https://www.cape.org/courses/internal-family-systems-workshopTo watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/dick-schwartz-internal-family-systems-social-activism-episode-one-hundred-twenty-sixThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

“And now 40 years later, thousands of parts and thousands of people using this all over the world, we can safely say that Self is in everybody; it can't be damaged, it knows how to heal, and it is just beneath the surface of these parts…and psychedelics seem to have a way to access that pretty quickly.” Welcome to Integrating Psychedelics, featuring insights gleaned from psychedelic experiences and conversations around how to integrate this wisdom into our daily lives. I'm your host, Jenny Weinar, and in today's episode I'm speaking with Dick Schwartz. Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, is the creator of Internal Family Systems, a highly effective, evidence-based therapeutic model that de-pathologizes the multi-part personality. Dick lives with his wife Jeanne near Chicago, close to his three daughters and his growing number of grandchildren. In this conversation we discuss: How listening to his patients led Dick to develop the therapeutic model of Internal Family Systems How IFS is fundamentally different than most other paradigms for understanding the psyche The role of inner child parts in the IFS framework The goals of IFS and how it differs from mindfulness How parts work fits naturally with psychedelics The problem with the concept of ego dissolution The relationship of IFS to set, setting and psychedelic facilitators My personal experience incorporating IFS with ketamine Why parts work is helpful for people who seemingly don't respond to the medicine How the inner work of IFS extends to social justice and the world at large Why it's vital to follow up with parts even after healing has occurred Dick's vision for the future of IFS ...and more! In this episode, Dr. Peter Malinoski guides Drew Boa through the process of unburdening sexual arousal using the internal family systems model (IFS). This type of healing experience can bring tremendous freedom from porn and unwanted sexual behavior.Disclaimer: This is what we call a demo, which is short for a demonstration. Demos are a common way for IFS therapists to practice with each other and to show others what IFS is like. Demos are not therapy or counseling. In sharing this demo, we are not trying to teach people how to do IFS on themselves or others, but rather demonstrating what the IFS model can look like in action. Unburdening protocols are taught in formal IFS Level 1 training from the IFS Institute. IFS Level 1 training is required to do unburdening protocols and to be called an IFS therapist.Clinical psychologist Dr. Peter Malinoski is president of Souls and Hearts and host of Interior Integration for Catholics, a podcast helping Catholics embrace their identities as beloved sons and daughters of God. Today I interview Richard Schwartz. His friends know him as Dick. And while this is my first time speaking with him, I can't help but feel friendly toward him. Dick is the creator of Internal Family Systems or IFS, an extraordinary and paradigm-shifting therapeutic model that changes not only the way we envision healing, but also the person being healed. Full disclosure: I am currently working with a therapist who uses IFS in their approach, and it's been healing and revelatory, which is why I'm very excited to share this conversation with you, where we explore personal and cultural healing, the innate goodness of our humanity, and our connection with one another and the world around us. Dick is the author of several books. He's taught around the world. He's the founder of the IFS Institute, which offers resources and training for professionals and the general public. And he's just written the new book No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model (Sounds True, 2021). Enjoy my conversation with Dick Schwartz. This week Anne and Alison talk with IFS therapist Madeleine Warren about the parentified child. We interview Madeleine Warren, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) about parentified children. This is a relationship children have with their parents in which the child takes on the parent's role of emotional caretaking in the absence of the parent doing this for the child. This can result in children being labeled “mature for their age” or “an old soul”. These children often grow up feeling that they may not even have any needs, which Madeleine shares with a humorous and personal story. Madeleine Warren has a private practice in Evanston, Illinois where she works with individual adults and couples, many of whom have a trauma history and/or histories of childhood parentification. She is also an Assistant Trainer for the IFS Institute and runs IFS Consultation Groups for trained IFS therapists. She has a life partner who is a survivor, and no children, although she has been honored to offer some re-parenting and to facilitate inner-parenting with her clients.00:00 Introduction with Anne and Alison20:00 Interview with MadeleineShow notes.Latchkey Urchins & Friends Website.Audio engineering by Josh Collins.Episode music: "One Cloud is Lonely," "Hannah Hannah," and "Better Now" by Proxima Parada.
