Lessons from an Entrepreneur In this candid conversation, Todd brings his extensive experience and expertise as an entrepreneur in ‘ordinary' businesses into an open discussion about the coaching profession. Wanting to be an entrepreneur from a young ages, he reflects on some of his lessons from those early years, and masterfully articulates what is required in a coaching business. Phil & Todd discuss: * What's missing in the coaching industry. * What distinguishes coaches who will succeed in creating a prosperous coaching life from those that probably won't. * Why some folks leave the coaching industry after a short while. * The benefits of working with people smarter than you. * The dangers of social media & comparison. * Starting out as a pro coach, & why it can be so difficult to succeed in building a sustainable coaching practice. * An insight in Paris that has helped Todd live a happy life. * Making his life more about horses than the office. * What's the one thing that contributes the most to his financial liberty and financial success. Here's a little more about Todd Not every entrepreneur has a world-changing innovation to bring to market or can spin off a division from a larger company to get their start. Todd Randall was a mid-level manager at a large company when he reset his work values to match his personal ones and still found a way to be a successful multi-preneur with the liberty lifestyle he craved. Currently, Todd is a multiple-entity business owner including retail, wholesale and real estate businesses. His pride and joy is a consulting/coaching business to help aspiring entrepreneurs in hopes that they can avoid the mistakes he made in creating the liberty and/or success they dream of. Life, Love & Leo Unleashed This episode is a little different, it's a conversation that is a beautiful example of what is possible in coaching. At the time of recording Leo had been working with me for 6 months in my Coaching Life Unleashed program. In this episode Leo shares some thoughts about his first 6 months of our time together. He has been a wonderful client himself, open to looking at the uncomfortable, to be held with love through aspects of our exploration that have had him squirm, and a willingness to step into the unknown, which is all there really is. We have explored some pretty deep topics during our time together, and this 24 minute conversation is barely a glimpse. What is possible in coaching? A complete shift in your relationship with life, love and yourself. If you're a coach please feel free to share this episode with your prospects and clients as an example of what is possible in coaching. Here's a little more about Leo: Born in Austria and raised in Germany by an American Mother and Austrian father, Leo developed a sense of alienation early in life. His “ADD” felt incompatible with traditional education and, feeling something was wrong with him, he found it difficult to connect with other people. Since 2014 he has explored the nature of the human experience and through many kind and openhearted conversations has come to understand that how he felt was as much a universal as it was a personal experience. It is what he would describe as a pandemic of disconnection and disembodiment. Having trained in Gestalt therapy and group dynamics, and being at much more ease with life, he reached a turning point in his career: daring to offer someone he had just met a coaching session. The feedback from that conversation helped him decide to follow his calling to coach. Leo has invested in working with internationally renowned coaches and teachers and now takes much joy from helping his clients flourish and connect with a loving life. He also enjoys writing, listening to and playing music, volunteering in the name of happiness, and supporting organizations or individuals in their quest for a better world. In this conversation we discussed: * Tim's evolution from corporate employee to freelance coach and business owner. * How each of his redundancies became a blessing. * The series of happy accidents and synchronicities that continue to unfold. * How a pint of real ale became a turning point and led to a name for his business. * The difference between commitment and intention. * The system of selling coaching without selling * Determining the right fees for coaching * His biggest current challenge after coaching for more than twenty years. The Simplicity of Being Happy A former addict, hairdresser, and Harley Street therapist, Hugh now lives in Switzerland, is the author of 3 books, and works as a coach and therapist, helping people overcome their addictions. In this conversation we discuss: * At his lowest point, what came to mind to help him move forward? * How the losing of control gave an artificial sense of control. * Some of the steps he took to set up his therapy practice in a way that enabled him to support his family. * The value of imperfection and embracing being human. * What we would like to be different about ourselves. * Playing the game, and reflect on some coaching trainings. Hugh gives one of my favourite answers ever to my final question! Here's a little more about Hugh, in his own words: “In 1997, after a long period of drug abuse, my life fell apart in a way that it could never be the same again. This turned out to be a good thing! As my addictions ended, I knew I had an opportunity to re-build my life. I am so grateful I had that choice, and that I took it! Since the re-build began, I worked hard on becoming better at being myself. This has not always been easy. Aside from my many and varied addictions, I have struggled with anxiety, confidence, and relationship issues. I have also had times where my life seemed to lack meaning and purpose. Along the way, I have worked with some really great coaches, therapists, and guides, who have helped me get clear about who I am and what my life stands for. These days my life is primarily guided by my core values, two of which are kindness and imperfection. Kindness because, for me, this is one of the most important human qualities. The world needs more of it, so I am doing my part! Imperfection because, for me, we are all fellow strugglers finding our way on this journey through life. Our struggles are not an obstacle to growth. They are our growth! I love helping my clients find freedom from addiction and change their lives! I love helping people realise they can have more of what they want, with the strengths and resources that they already have! One of the great things about choosing a path of personal growth is that one day you get to look back and tell a different story about the journey you have been on. I love helping people come to that place where the dots join up and they can see their personal history through new eyes.” You can find out more about Hugh at https://thehughosborne.com/

Indeed a defining characteristic of David is his passion for the things that he chooses to give his attention to. A father, a husband, a film-maker, a coach and a business owner. For many years David followed a corporate career, although was always more interested in the process of change, rather than the underlying businesses he worked in. David was first introduced to the foundations of personal transformation in 1996, and in 2005 this culminated in leaving the traditional corporate world and setting up a coaching and consulting business in 2005. Over the years David's work and his coaching have evolved to where he is today. The coaching has become simpler, deeper, slower. More often than not simply offering the space to be deeply heard. From this style of coaching a new dimension of film making has emerged, perhaps the most powerful work that David has and continues to do. A process of listening in silence, present to whatever words emerge and capturing them in beautiful short films. Sometimes personal. Sometimes shared. The Nature of Beliefs - A Conversation with Amir Karkouti And why sharing your understanding of the principles (or indeed anything) may be unhelpful... In this episode I share a conversation I had with my dear friend Amir, for his WTF Are The Principles Group. Let's look at the nature of beliefs and the role they play in our interpretation of the world. We've seen some passionate debates around these parts, strong opinions, gentle pointing, all usually with an undercurrent of ‘so long as you're pointing to truth it's all cool.' I like that sentiment too. But are we pointing to truth? Or have we been hoodwinked by an unintentional magic trick that appears to have swept aside our beliefs only to instil another? Let's explore... Here's how Amir introduced this conversation: Alright folks, I am excited about this one! You may have seen him as the host of "The Coaching Life" Podcast where he interviewed some of the top coaches in our industry. You may have read his books Musings on Love and the sequel More Musings on Love. You may have seen him jump in and answer a question on Facebook from a completely different space that blew you away. Well, you will finally get a chance to listen to him speak and share with us. I am going to give you a personal bio even though his bio is posted below. I have known Phil since the beginning days of my coaching career. We have done workshops together and he has become a very good friend. One thing that separates Phil from so many is that he embodies what he shares. His personality, his love of life, and his generosity seeps in every facet of his existence. Whenever we spend time together I feel like I got bathed in a spiritual bath. He is incredibly human and has a talent to see what most of us don't see about how amazing we are! It's been a wild ride, one that has had him listen to his heart and change completely how he shows up in the world. If you're a relatively new coach, you're transitioning or have transitioned from a previous career, or are passionate about living a coaching life, this one is for you. Here's a little more about Troy Hailing from California Troy was introduced to the ocean and surfing at a very young age. In 1991 he was on his way to becoming a professional surfer when he was faced with a decision of surfing for a living or taking a leap of faith at a startup called Volcom. He chose the latter and ended up with the company for 20 years where he worked his way up to Global EVP of Marketing. In 2010 he left the company and shortly thereafter he was divorced. In 2016 he started a men's yoga clothing line called Kozm. At the beginning of 2018, he was feeling unfulfilled with running his company and made the tough decision to step away. Simultaneously he experienced a painful breakup, was confronted with mid-life and was feeling depleted and lost. Soon thereafter he fell into depression which battered his immune system leaving him vulnerable for a health crisis. He then became ill and was diagnosed with mold poisoning from the house he was living in. Finally realizing the innate healing power within he soon learned how to become his own doctor and created the optimum environment (inside and out) to heal. This experience ended up being a blessing which supercharged him in becoming a life coach where he helps people to remember the true essence of who they are and what they're capable of creating and achieving. In this wonderfully frank conversation Karen talks about play and experimentation, boobs and smoking, and gives us all a glimpse into the delights of simply showing up as yourself. Here's a little more about Karen DiMarco, RN, BSN, iRNPA A nurse for 22 years with specialties in Intensive Care, Trauma, and Flight Nursing, Karen DiMarco (who is writing this in the 3rd person, which is weird, but apparently the standard for bios), had an experience in 2011 that she describes as “a coming home.” Within weeks of that profound moment – on the floor of a closet in a puddle of snot and tears – her mental and physical illnesses, and a 26-year history of eating disorders, melted away. Since then, she has been a catalyst for transforming the way we deliver and conceive of health care and wellbeing. Put simply, the mind and body are not disconnected, and when misunderstandings of the mind are healed, there is a profound healing effect on the body. Karen is a total geek about science, and the connection between the mind and the body. Her insatiable appetite for all things spiritual and biological, and her ability to communicate her understanding in a scientific, sometimes hilarious, and always easy-to-understand way, is what makes her both a total weirdo and incredibly impactful as a healthcare visionary and transformational coach. Hobbies include: collecting sea glass and coaching certifications; reading, research, yoga, and ‘playing with herself' (nutrition, biological alchemy, meditation, & quantum-whatever); hanging-out with family — including her 3 daughters, a Tortoise, and a small dog named “Mr. Big” (all often seen, or spoken of, as backdrops to her 1-to-1 coaching, courses, writing, and speaking engagements.) In this delightful episode, Molly shares some of her insights that have helped her develop and grow her coaching business, continue to be of service and help to her clients, and have fun in enjoying the longevity of her loving marriage. Here's a little more about Molly: By 1996 Molly Gordon had been a waiter, a writer, an editor, a business manager, and a full-time artist. She had a penchant for Jungian studies, the novels of Dorothy Sayers, and Improv. After closing her fiber arts studio, Mollycoddles, she agreed to help a few friends with their businesses. Before long, they were coming to see her weekly, not only with business issues, but also with life questions. Molly didn't know what to call what she was doing. It wasn't consulting, and it wasn't therapy. All she knew was that her clients became more engaged, confident, and pro-active in their lives and work. They were living into their dreams. One day a client sent an article from Newsweek about coaching. Attached was a sticky note saying, “This is what you do.” And she saw that her variegated past had been the perfect training ground for what became her life work. Twenty years and a substantial amount of training later, Molly is a Master Certified Coach, a Certified Mentor Coach, an assessor in the International Coach Federation (ICF) credentialing process, and an instructor at University of Miami (Coral Gables) Professional Coaching Certificate Program, 7 Paths Forward, and Coach Masters Academy. In 2010 Molly encountered the teachings of Sydney Banks, commonly known as the Three Principles. She recognized in Syd's insights the source code for effective coaching: human beings are part of an infinite intelligent life energy, and as such, they are inherently whole, creative and resourceful. Molly is now on a path to incorporate the Principles into the International Coach Federation (ICF) definition of coaching and mentors ICF-oriented coaches to integrate the Three Principles into their work. Loving Out Loud Deanna shares her journey from being an over-achieving, happy-faced, straight-A student, perpetually chasing perfectionism, through having a wake up call from anxiety and being guided by some realisations that had her relocate across the country, and immerse in a spiritual and loving exploration of being of service to others. By embracing her natural ability to love out loud, being able to listen deeply, and see the true essence of her clients, she reveals how she provides for them what most of us have been been craving for most of our lives - acceptance, non judgement, openness, warmth, and support, and by demonstrating her own power of raw openness, in a dance of self-acceptance and self-love, she inspires others to love, embrace and express their own beautiful humanness, helping them to redefine success into something they enjoy. Listen, also, for a delightful outtake at the end. Here's a little more about Deanna: A multi-lingual recovering perfectionist and life-long cheerleader, Deanna took the advice of a fridge-magnet, “Leap and the net will appear,” and moved to California from New Jersey to gain a master's degree in Spiritual Psychology to educate her heart as well as her mind. She serves her high-achiever clients all over the world to redefine what true success means to them. She provides a space of pure love and possibility in which they feel safe to explore beyond old ideas and expectations into embracing their true hearts' desires. Her greatest joy is reminding people to give themselves permission to be human. Deanna is also the host of Better Living Coaches, an online show featuring renowned coaches from across the globe, aimed to offer practical tools, skills, and perspectives to shift from living life to loving life. When not coaching, Deanna can be found dancing her heart out, filling her belly with NY style pizza, or cuddling up with her two Chihuahuas, Lola and Penelope. Haircuts, Recovery & Clothes Dryers There was only ever one person I wanted to help me celebrate this milestone 50th episode of this podcast. Someone who inspires, who is always super fun and loving, who keeps it real and is a dear friend. JG and I talk haircuts, Mad Men, breakups, recovery, boners, clothes driers, and a game of fave & crave. This is a slightly different format to the other episodes, it's a little more fly-on-the-wall as the two of us simply hang out and chat, and as is always the case with JG, there's lots of laughter and fun with some real insightful gems. Here's a little more about JG: What does an award-winning entrepreneur, a TEDx Speaker, a bacon-atarian (thats a vegetarian who still eats bacon), a funky sock lover, a former rapper (who opened for the Wu-Tang Clan - YES, really!) and a previously 332lb man (who has since lost over 130lbs despite his affinity for bacon) have in common? They are all the same guy! Jason Goldberg (JG for short) is the King of Playful Sales, Success and Self- Leadership. He is a geek, turned entrepreneur, “Edu-tainer”, author of the #1 International Best-Seller “Prison Break” and creator of both the Playful Prosperity AND the Business UNusual System programs. JG blends his signature mix of simple and transformational wisdom, practical business mentorship, and belly-busting humor to help coaches, speakers and online educators build “Competition-PROOF” businesses full of impact and influence (and that allows them to have a ton of FUN in the process)! Before shifting his focus to the world of human potential, JG earned his MBA degree, served as the Director of Engineering and Operations for a technology firm, was the co-founder and CEO of a ground-breaking executive transportation company and was also co-founder and CEO of a technology commercialization startup in partnership with NASA to bring innovations from the space shuttle program to the private sector. As a sought-after international speaker and host, JG has shared the stage with some of the world's greatest thought-leaders and innovators in human potential and performance including Dr. Sean Stephenson (The 3 Foot Giant), Don Miguel Ruiz (The Four Agreements), Vishen Lakhiani (CEO of Mindvalley), Steven Kotler (Stealing Fire), Marisa Peer (the UK's psychotherapist to the stars) and so many others that he hopes will impress you if these other ones don't! ;) Find out more about Jason at: http://www.thejasongoldberg.com/ You can get a free copy of JG's latest book “How To Build a Competition- Proof Coaching Business” here: http://BeCompetitionProof.com

Investing in the Unknown It takes quite an investment and leap of faith to spend over fourteen hours on an airplane to travel to an event from which you don't really know what you'll get. Brenton shares his journey from the other side of the coaching relationship - as a client and avid explorer of personal development. He also shares how he has caught himself living a double life, continues to shift from people pleasing to people loving, and how he quit his well-paid job to step completely into the unknown. What's next? Taking steps away from what is considered normal…. Brenton is currently swimming in the unknown, having sold his home and walked away from a $110k (AUD) job in September last year. Ask him what he plans to do and you will likely get the response “I don't know” and if you do get a more definitive answer he is probably making up a story so you won't feel uncomfortable with his unconventional approach. The story so far….. For the last 20 years or so Brenton has worked as a nurse. For the first 10 years, clinically, in the field of Intensive Care in Sydney, Australia and in London, UK and more recently as a Nurse Educator, initially in ICU and developing across all areas of nursing education. It is in this period he has become more curious about himself and others. He has experienced the power of investing in himself through coaching, travelling, and attending workshops around the world to explore his curiosity. Right now he is on a journey, which may well lead him into becoming a coach, but nothing is certain. Having chosen not to work, for almost a year, Brenton has reacquainted himself with emotions he has blocked for most of his life, fear, anger, and shame to name a few, and has enjoyed the space to continue exploring.
