A Conversation on Stopping Well, Starting Again, & Seminary with Amy Seiffert Following the Holy Spirit's prompting requires us to slow down, and sometimes He invites us to stop altogether. However, you can be sure, that's not the end of the story. PSALM 23 ESV The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.2     He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.[a]3     He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness[b]    for his name's sake.4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[c]    I will fear no evil, for you are with me;    your rod and your staff,    they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies;you anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows.6 Surely[d] goodness and mercy[e] shall follow me    all the days of my life, and I shall dwell[f] in the house of the Lord    forever.[g]MEET AMY Amy Seiffert is an author, speaker, and YouVersion teacher. Send us a textShame has a way of convincing us that we're flawed beyond repair, but it's simply a lie that thrives in silence. In this deeply personal episode of Striving Butterfly, I share my experience of becoming single in my 40s after ending a significant relationship—and the shame that followed. From questioning my worth to feeling like I failed my daughter, I unpack five types of shame we all encounter: relational, societal, career, family, and friendship shame. But shame doesn't get the final say. Through honest reflection, I explore how we can name our shame, bring it into the light, and reframe the stories we tell ourselves. With Isaiah 61:7 as a reminder of God's promise of restoration, this episode offers hope, encouragement, and practical steps toward freedom. You are not your shame. Your story is still unfolding. This podcast isn't just about me—it's about us. Your journey matters. I want to hear your questions, your thoughts, your experiences. Sara shares with us in this episode the process of shifting, navigating differently in the act of up-levelling. When you know what's right for you and it's time to shift to that, it is hard work, but Sara stresses the point that you are NOT starting over which can sound drastic, you are rather Starting AGAIN. You have learned from previous experience, ideas and solutions that you have already created in your life. This can lessen the fear of this new territory - your foundation has been set. Sara talks about moving toward Keynote speaking which she realized was the culmination of all her experiences and her passionately wanting to share what she's learned with a large audience. This episode is about moving from INTIMIDATION to MOTIVATION. Here are some tips from Sara for those going through this next phase in their journey: Whatever you want to do, you've created solutions in the past. Build on what you've done that worked before. Find people that can help you and brainstorm with you to create what you want to create. Reverse engineer: See and feel the end-result of what you want. See yourself there already. Then start to take the steps that get you there. Step away, take your time in creating what you are wanting. Patience is key. Website: www.Saraschultingkranz.com Check out the new site! Intuition. It is SO important. And the older I get, the more I realise this. In the Western world, we aren't taught how to connect with it aka listen to ourselves. So, when I was younger I kinda went around 'thinking' a lot; doing what 'I should' do and what is 'valuable' (in society's terms). I guess I was ruled by the dominant culture and the 'norm' like many of us. BUT, here's what I have been doing for the last decade to LISTEN TO MY INTUITION, connect to myself, and decide what I want for my life! Happy listening. In This Episode: What is intuition? How to feel it How I got better at listening to it, by... Spending time alone Walking Journaling Talking out loud to myself Acknowledging the importance of sleep Gathering 'data'/insights to help my process Seeing how I respond to types of news (listen to find out what!) Deciphering who NOT to listen to... I hope you feel like you can align with yourself a lot more after this episode. ___________________ SIDE NOTE: Want to improve your brand storytelling or learn how to communicate so that people LISTEN? Becoming Superhuman
The First Pancake

Becoming Superhuman

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2022 9:52

For every stack of fluffy, buttery, golden pancakes, what immediately preceded it was an ugly, first pancake. It's almost inevitable that the very first pancake of any batch is going to be ugly, and poorly executed. The pan isn't hot enough, or perhaps it's too hot. Maybe you greased the pan a little too much, or maybe you went a little too light on the non-stick spray or butter. In any event, while it probably tastes just fine, the very first pancake is usually not your best work. I have been away from Becoming Superhuman since September 5th. I consciously chose to eschew this project — temporarily — to instead focus on my role as father and husband with the arrival of our second child. Sleep and sanity have both been noticeably diminished. After a little more than a month completely off, I am back, and this is my first pancake. Starting Again, Amidst Uncertainty Life, thankfully, is rarely monotonous. Unexpected challenges or setbacks appear without warning…like the various leaks my home seems to spring on me or the appliances that break at the worst time. Exciting opportunities come crashing into your office like the Kool-Aid man, often when you are down to your last dollar or when you are double booked every hour on the hour. And, new ideas materialize from nothingness, leaving you to decide whether to hold on tight and pursue it, or let it fade back into obscurity from whence it came. All of this, while often stressful, does keep things interesting. Unfortunately, the process of putting all of these variables back in order can be quite difficult, especially if your underlying circumstances already keep you busy. If you're anything like me recently, you may be wondering: how do we get back up to speed from a cold start or manage our energy and momentum amidst uncertainty? Here's the four steps I'm taking to get back up to full speed following a month off. Step 1: Consult the face in the mirror I have ADHD, and (undiagnosed, but likely) low support needs Autism. I share this because as I explain my strategies for managing energy and momentum, it's important to note that my advice is tinted by the unique way that my brain processes the world around me. I am open about my conditions and hope that doing so helps de-stigmatize the labels that are too often used to marginalize and malign, consequently leading people to mask their needs. Those who do not feel safe to set boundaries or ask for the accommodations they need, may stop searching for solutions. By shedding the stigma of these labels, we give everyone the freedom to truly investigate how their own minds work and hopefully find ways to drop the mask, show up powerfully and authentically, and find methods for pursuing what's important to them. This is important because the first step to developing strategies for getting back up to speed or managing our energy, is to understand ourselves. I cannot give you the full list of questions to get to know yourself as it could fill an entire book. I'll just encourage you to become intensely curious about how your brain works, what factors impact your energy and focus, and what purpose is at your core? Step 2: Honor your totems and routines To trigger a work session, I like music without lyrics. Some people like silence, or the Top 40, or TV in the background. I like to work late at night following a short nap after dinner — I like the darkness and quiet, and my mind is at its sharpest. I prefer working for LONG uninterrupted stretches of time because I know that taking a break after 20 minutes or an hour into my work is almost guaranteed to destroy my focus. Some people like to work first thing in the morning when their energy and focus are at its peak. They may need to take frequent breaks to maintain or strengthen their focus and may prefer to break their work up in

Larry Harp's "Leaving The City of Regret" is a very inspirational poem that has helped many people who are struggling with regret. It is a call to action that inspires us to leave the city of regret and start over. The poem talks about how the city of regret creates dark memories, which in turn creates unhappiness. It says that when we are in the city of regret, it gives us an excuse to be unhappy and ungrateful for what we have today. With this verse, Simerjeet Singh encourages listeners not to let our past mistakes dictate our present and future happiness. Leave the city of regret and start over because anything is better than living in this dark place. It's never too late to start over. Leaving the City of Regret by Larry Harp I had not really planned on taking a trip this time of year, and yet I found myself packing rather hurriedly. This trip was going to be unpleasant and I knew in advance that no real good would come of it. I'm talking about my annual “Guilt Trip.” I got tickets to fly there on Wish I Had airlines. It was an extremely short flight. I got my baggage, which I could not check. I chose to carry it myself all the way. It was weighted down with a thousand memories of what might have been. No one greeted me as I entered the terminal to the Regret City International Airport. I say international because people from all over the world come to this dismal town. As I checked into the Last Resort Hotel, I noticed that they would be hosting the year's most important event, the Annual Pity Party. I wasn't going to miss that great social occasion. Many of the towns leading citizens would be there. First, there would be the Done family, you know, Should Have, Would Have and Could Have. Then came the I Had family. You probably know ol' Wish and his clan. Of course, the Opportunities would be present, Missed and Lost. The biggest family would be the Yesterday's. There are far too many of them to count, but each one would have a very sad story to share. Then Shattered Dreams would surely make and appearance. And It's Their Fault would regale us with stories (excuses) about how things had failed in his life, and each story would be loudly applauded by Don't Blame Me and I Couldn't Help It. Well, to make a long story short, I went to this depressing party knowing that there would be no real benefit in doing so. And, as usual, I became very depressed. But as I thought about all of the stories of failures brought back from the past, it occurred to me that all of this trip and subsequent “pity party” could be canceled by ME! I started to truly realize that I did not have to be there. I didn't have to be depressed. One thing kept going through my mind, I CAN'T CHANGE YESTERDAY, BUT I DO HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE TODAY A WONDERFUL DAY. I can be happy, joyous, fulfilled, encouraged, as well as encouraging. Knowing this, I left the City of Regret immediately and left no forwarding address. Am I sorry for mistakes I've made in the past? YES! But there is no physical way to undo them. So, if you're planning a trip back to the City of Regret, please cancel all your reservations now. Instead, take a trip to a place called, Starting Again. I liked it so much that I have now taken up permanent residence there. My neighbors, the I Forgive Myselfs and the New Starts are so very helpful. By the way, you don't have to carry around heavy baggage, because the load is lifted from your shoulders upon arrival. God bless you in finding this great town. If you can find it — it's in your own heart — please look me up. I live on I Can Do It Street. Christine Bannister's journey to excellence has been fueled by challenges. After a rough divorce, single parenting and working in the 911 environment where traumatic events were commonplace, and a subsequent run-in with PTSD; she solidified her calling to bravely meet people in their chaos. Her busy life can create a busy mindset, so she begins by sharing how she prepares her day to stay focused for the unknown busyness ahead of her. STARTING AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN Christine doesn't waste any time digging deep as she shares how starting over can be a decision one day, and a new journey the next. It can also be a marathon of small little steps, like just doing the next right thing today, because it's all you can do. She feels blessed to have all of those starting overs in her life. In her early 20's, she had a great career and ended up meeting a man, getting married and having two children. Unfortunately, there were a lot of challenges that ravaged her marriage, and it quickly came to an end. So in that space of not only starting over as a married woman, and a mother, she then subsequently had to start over as a single mom, and a divorced woman. And just dealt with a lot of challenges and emotions in that space. GROW, LEARN and EVOLVE Christine changed and grew as her life became very different than it was. She found herself in the space of starting over again, a beautiful new season, as she puts it. Starting over as a family, a new business and about to launch her Courage life coaching business, “Christine Jean Coaching.” She shares how God is opening doors and using her to speak truth and life into people. Not only are new opportunities coming forward for her business, but after not dating for a very long time, she is now in her 40's and starting over with love, and trying to figure that out again. She balances life by prioritizing her faith, single parenting her two teenagers- Chloe and Eagan, spending time in her garden, and building a life and an empire with her partner, Aaron. Friday16th April The Fear of Starting Again 5 The greatest leader the Israelites had seen in recent times, Moses had just passed on. The nation was in national mourning and confusion. How will we get to the promised land they must have been thinking? God has instructed Moses to anoint Joshua as the new leader of the people, the one to take them into the promised land but most of them couldn't see how that could happen without Moses. Joshua himself was fearful, but God encouraged him; "…my servant Moses is dead, and it's time to get the people moving again, face your fears and move on ahead. It's your time". This is the summary of what God said to Joshua. Joshua 3:7 (NLT) The lord told Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses. That's exactly what God is saying to someone today. You might be coming after a great leader, morale might be low, people might be doubting your abilities but God is saying to you, “It's time to start again. It's time to go beyond your fears, no matter how great your predecessor was, know that the greater God lives on the inside of you”. Joyce Meyer wrote a book Titled "Do it afraid" meaning in spite of your fears, just do what you have to. Take advantage of God's presence in you, confront and conquer your fears and you'll see the great things God has ahead of you, just as Joshua later discovered. I pray for you that the hold of fear will be broken over your life in the name of Jesus. This season that is pregnant with possibilities will work for you in the name of Jesus, you will excel and prosper in your new position, venture and organisation as you start again in Jesus' name. Your greatness is now in Jesus' name. God bless you, have a lovely weekend.

Wednesday 14th April The Fear of Starting Again 3. The fear of starting again is real whether it's from a natural source or fear induced by Satan, he tries to build a stronghold to keep people down especially after a failed project. Peter was an experienced fisherman and had gone fishing overnight but caught nothing. As He was clearing up to return home after a disappointing outing, Jesus stepped into his boat and preached a sermon from there. After preaching He asked Peter to go fishing again in the Sea of Galilee. Luke 5 vs 4-6 (NLT), 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn't catch a thing. But if you say so, I'll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! Peter couldn't imagine going back fishing that day again, it was the wrong time of the day, he was tired, he was still thinking of the economic implications of going another day without a catch when Jesus gave this instruction. Jesus didn't just tell him to go back into the sea to catch fish, Jesus said he should go in deeper! After his initial hesitation and resistance Peter did as Jesus said, he went fishing again, and the result was unbelievable. He caught so much fish that his net began to tear and his boat began to sink because of the number of fish that was caught. This is what can happen when we overcome our fears and try again. Most people that we celebrate today as achievers had experienced failure at some point but they stayed persistent, believing, tried again and eventually succeeded. Maybe you have experienced economic failure like Peter, or you've worked so hard at a venture, a relationship or a program in school and have nothing to show for it. Are you tired and worn out, “washing your nets” to pack everything up? Jesus said, “Get back in there and try again. Go deeper, try harder.” With faith in God, you will experience a breakthrough that will make all the losses and failures of the past inconsequential in Jesus' Name. Stay strong and stay focused. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Divorce - Who Gets What? Just because you think you deserve a particular outcome from your marriage, it doesn't mean the law works that way? The family court has a formula which lawyers use to work out what you are entitled. And the court will approve the orders under the terms ‘just and equitable’ for both parties, allowing you both to move on and build a new life from the equity built up in your relationship.  Where a 50/50 split may seem fair when dividing assets, there is a list of criteria which also needs to be considered. Not only for you to survive now but also into the future. Consider contributions at the start of your relationship, during and contributions made by other parties, such as gifts or inheritances.  Researchers say it takes five years to get back on your feet financially after a divorce. This fact happens whether you remain friends or enemies. And emotions can heighten the need to win at all costs.  Knowing what you are entitled to and being prepared to receive that and nothing more can cut the cost of litigation and emotional distress. In this podcast, I will go over some of the criteria needed to help your lawyer evaluate your position and financial entitlements.    Links: My book: The Jelly Bean Jar – Empowering Independence through Divorce https://tanyasomerton.com/shop/the-jelly-bean-jar/ Join my Free Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/divorceangel/ Divorce Roadmap Session: https://tanyasomerton.com/divorce-roadmap/

Losing Everything And Still Finding Happiness

Today’s episode: Losing Everything And Still Finding Happiness When a client walks into my office, saying she needs help leaving her marriage, I normally look for positives to help her move on and build a new life. In this podcast, l am going to explain the strength, family support and willpower one client had to leave her marriage, start a new job, relocate her family and decide to go bankrupt. None of this was what she expected when marrying her husband or dreaming of a successful future. Like many of us, she stayed in a marriage because she thought she was doing the right thing for everyone around her and did not want to let anyone down, especially her teenage children.  Instead, she realized her husband had been lying for years and did not want to face up to his financial reality. Leaving her with phone calls from debt collectors and people he owed money too. This story is not uncommon, but thankfully, most people are able to move on with a little bit of financial equity from their relationship. But starting again in your late 40’s and having nothing to your name can certainly make you question, ‘What has it all been for?’ This client showed strength beyond words and in a short period of time has turned her life around. She amazes me, and her story will stay with me for a long time. Life is what we make it. Timestamps: How did life get this bad? [00:01:00] Not having aligned values and goals with your partner. John uses the story of Nicodemus to suggest that rather than trying to understand God as Trinity, we might instead start with the relationship with the Trinity. Using the ancient metaphor of that relationship being a dance, he invites us to learn to live in the dance. What might the idea of “Trinity” offer us in our daily lives?
