This short story, written by Andri Snær Magnason for our third print edition, follows an architect in Reykjavík grappling with the growing discord between his creativity and a capitalist reality. Laying bare the ways narratives of control and human supremacy can manifest in the physical objects we make, “Giantstone” asks us to consider what new stories could begin to shape our inner and outer worlds. Will we remain stuck in our humancentric philosophies, or will our art come to reflect a way of life that keeps and cares for the Earth? Read the short story. The warming of the planet is ushering in changes on a mythological scale. Oceans heat up, ice shelves melt, great floods swallow landscapes, ancient forests are reduced to ash. In this interview from our archive, Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason speaks about how such incomprehensible changes are accelerating geological timescales. Instead of playing out over millennia, vast transformations of the Earth are now happening in the span of a lifetime, and in rapid succession. An accompaniment to The Last Ice Age—the third film in our Shifting Landscapes film series—this conversation with Andri explores how we can shift our sense of time to comprehend an uncertain future with greater clarity. Drawing on poetry, memories, stories from his grandparents, and language that infuses meaning into the data-led narrative of the climate crisis, Andri turns to the power of mythology to help us comprehend both the loss and possibility of our moment. The Hearing Architecture podcast proudly sponsored by Brickworks, presents Again and Again and Again, a mini-series hosted by Hilary Duff. Each week, we will bring you interviews and conversations as we seek better ways to understand, harness and deploy the expertise and knowledge of professionals currently within the design community, at home and abroad. Our guests are all experts on circularity within the building industry and share the aim to display that waste is not an accident but the consequence of decisions made at the design stage. Here is our opportunity. We, as designers, have an opportunity to do better. In this episode, we hear from Andri Snær Magnason. He is not our usual podcast guest as he is not a formally trained architect, yet he has worked alongside them, written for and about them, and comes from a lineage of family involved in the environment, whether built or natural. I thought that my conversation with Andri would be a good starting point for the publication of my research because he deals with words and facts in a way that we as humans can relate. His books, projects, presentations, and advocacy all try to convince us of one thing: We need to start connecting to future in an intimate and urgent way. Today's discussion focuses less on architecture, and more on our environment as a setting for our future and how and why we care about it. Andri is a Reykjavik-based Icelandic writer and documentary filmmaker, who navigates the realms of environmental activism, architecture, visual art, music, film, and theatre. He ran in the 2016 Icelandic presidential election, where he passionately advocated on environmental issues. His literary portfolio spans novels, poetry, essays, theatre and children's books, performed and published across more than 40 countries. His 2019 National bestseller, "On Time and Water," delves poetically into the alarming realities of environmental change, approaching the subject as if a shared tale at the dinner table.  Time, particularly in the context of climate change, is a recurrent theme in his work, and he offers an intimate perspective that resonates amidst the overwhelming facts and figures. In our conversation, Andri emphasizes the challenge of connecting people to a future that seems beyond imagination, stressing the need for a more personal understanding of time as a dimension in the face of global changes.  I spoke with Andri back in his office in Reykjavik in August 23, after I had just returned from a hike in the highlands of Iceland to view the now declassified OK glacier, and Andri's commemorative plaque which we discuss in our recording. Our interview explores the power of language and its ability to collapse these wide expanses of time into something we can feel, touch and get close to emotionally. It was a joy to speak about these topics in which architecture slots itself within. Energy, resources, materials, landscape, and time. This has been Again&Again&Again, a mini-series of Hearing Architecture, proudly sponsored by Brickworks, and made possible with the support of the Alastair Swayn Foundation.  Thank you so much for listening and thank you to our international guest Andri Snaer Magnason for your discussion, your stories and your myths. We join you in the goal of making the future feel intimate, relevant, and in realising the interconnectedness of individuals and loved ones across the unfolding timeline we exist in. We look forward to speaking with you again. Our sponsor Brickworks also produces architecture podcasts hosted by Tim Ross. "When I was writing On Time and Water somebody said this is not just one book. This is about your grandmother, about glaciers. You have to focus. You can't have this mythology and glacial and ocean sites, speculations about words like ocean acidification, and your grandfather's sister who is visiting Tolstoy. You have to focus. You can't put all this into a book. And then I thought, oh yes, I forgot my favorite uncle, who was the researcher of crocodiles. I also have to put him into the book. And when I put the crocodile's story into the book, it was like a keystone. Everything fell into a whole picture.Because we live in democratic societies and literature is an art of entertainment. People want to continue reading books, and it's based on instant ways of storytelling. Of course, it's strange to live in a society where we have to entertain ourselves to understand the most important issue in the world."Andri Snær Magnason is an award winning author of On Time and Water, The Casket of Time, LoveStar, Dreamland and The Story of the Blue Planet. He co directed Dreamland - a feature length documentary film based on the book. Footage from Dreamland and an interview with Andri can be seen in the Oscar Award-winning documentary Inside Job by Charles Ferguson. His most recent book, Tímakistan, the Time Casket has now been published in more than 10 languages, was nominated as the best fantasy book in Finland 2016 with authors like Ursula K. le Guin and David Mitchell. In English six books are currently available: Bónus Poetry, The Story of The Blue Planet, LoveStar, Dreamland and The Casket of Time, (Tímakistan) and On Time and Water."When I was writing On Time and Water somebody said this is not just one book. Of course, it's strange to live in a society where we have to entertain ourselves to understand the most important issue in the world."www.andrimagnason.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

I was thinking, what do you ask a person that has been reincarnated 14 times? I also interviewed lots of scientists, and sometimes the gurus are more rational than scientists, and they talk about climate solutions. And I seek wisdom from my grandparents, and simple friendship and stories. They were both 98 years old, and I would ask them: 'Is 100 years a long time or a short time?' And they would tell me it's a very short time. And this climate scientist encouraged me to write and said, 'People don't understand data, but they understand stories.' And it's a very strong belief that the artist does have a role in our society. Sometimes he's an entertainer. So professors from Rice University Dominic Boyer and Cymene Howe are anthropologists doing research on climate change. And they noticed that Iceland had lost its first glacier to climate change. And just like we have monuments to major events like war monuments and anti-slavery monuments, humans have all sorts of monuments in history. And they were thinking, the first glacier to be gone, doesn't that deserve a monument? So they planned this event where we would place a monument in memory of the first glacier Iceland lost to climate change and asked me to write the text for that plaque. And it was a strange request because for the person to be a writer, to be living during a time when a glacier has gone during a lifetime, what kind of an obituary or what kind of message do we write? Because I was thinking, Okay, I'm writing this in copper, so I'm writing to the people around me here and now, but just like in a graveyard, somebody might come after 200, 300, 500, 600 years and read these words. So simultaneously addressing my peers, my fellow earthlings here and now, and then talking to people that might stumble upon that glacier in the near or distant future. So I wrote: A letter to the futureOk is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we knowwhat is happening and what needs to be done.Only you know if we did it."www.andrimagnason.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

The real tragedy is if the Himalayan glaciers go the same way as Iceland. In many places in the world, glaciers are very important for agriculture and the basic water supply of people. So that's where I go into mythology in On Time and Water because in Nordic mythology, the world started with a cow, a frozen cow made of frost and snow. And it never made sense to me. But if you look at the Himalayas, how these frozen glaciers are feeding 1 billion people with milky white water that is better than normal water, then it makes total sense. Of course, the frozen cow - it's a glacier."www.andrimagnason.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Sometimes he's just documenting, but sometimes you maybe have a role in a very fundamental shift in our history. I think I could not be a writer here and now in history and not make some effort to address this issue."www.andrimagnason.comwww.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

"If you look at the Himalayas, the frozen glaciers are feeding 1 billion people with milky white water. Of course, the frozen cow - it's a glacier."Andri Snær Magnason is an award winning author of On Time and Water, The Casket of Time, LoveStar, Dreamland and The Story of the Blue Planet. His work has been published in more than 35 languages. He has a written in most genres, novels, poetry, plays, short stories, non fiction as well as being a documentary film maker. His novel, LoveStar got a Philip K. Dick Special Citation, and the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire in France and “Novel of the year” in Iceland. “Those who define the world based on money, industry, and production capacity have seemingly been spared from acquiring an understanding of biology, geology, or ecology. They calculate statistics and feel optimistic. What's fatal to the Earth and unsustainable for the future is hidden by the words ‘favorable economic outlook'. Increased oil production is positive for the economy; doubling aluminum production is positive. Economic growth doesn't distinguish sustainability and unsustainability. Imagine making no distinction between strengthening or fattening, or between a child or a tumor growing in the womb. Growth is simply presented as an inherent good; there's no distinction made between malignant and benign growth.” ― Andri Snær Magnason, On Time and WaterAndri Snær Magnason is an award winning author of On Time and Water, The Casket of Time, LoveStar, Dreamland and The Story of the Blue Planet. “Your time is the time of the people you know and love, the time that molds you. And your time is also the time of the people you will know and love. The time that you will shape."“Glaciers are frozen manuscripts that tell stories just like tree circles and sedimentary deposits; from them, you can gather information and create a picture of the past. Glaciers store histories of volcanic activity. They store pollen, rainwater and air that reveal the chemical make-up of the atmosphere tens of thousands of years back in time. They are important sources of details about vegetation and precipitation of the past.” “We do not see fire; we rarely see coal or oil. We're frequent flyers but we have no idea about the size of the bonfire that could be ignited with 20 tons of jet fuel. We buy our airline tickets online but we never have to check in the oil barrels that will carry us out into the world. Take the time I went to a two-day poetry festival in Lithuania, a journey of around 1,750 miles, the same distance as Chicago to Los Angeles. A barrel of oil holds about 42 gallons, so a single airline passenger burns through about three-quarters of a barrel on such a flight: up to one gallon every 60 miles.” ― Andri Snær Magnason, On Time and WaterAndri Snær Magnason is an award winning author of On Time and Water, The Casket of Time, LoveStar, Dreamland and The Story of the Blue Planet. Recommend this show by sharing the link: pod.link/2Pages My first job out of university was with a company that specialized in innovation. It was there that I really began to understand how creativity flourishes when there are restraints. We were once hired by Kellogg's to help do something new for Corn Flakes, but weren't allowed to change the product, packaging, or marketing. I remember realizing that I needed to figure out the rules in order to decide which ones needed to be broken.  Whatever your situation, there's liberation in understanding what rules need to be followed, and which ones can be played with. I'm wondering, how might you more joyfully break a few rules? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The sense of a start, published by Gavin on September 28, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Some attempts to feel the size of the future: ChronoZoom: [woosh] Will Macaskill: Imagine living, in order of birth, through the life of every human being who has ever lived... Your life lasts for almost four trillion years in total. For a tenth of that time, you're a hunter-gatherer, and for 60 percent you're an agriculturalist. You spend a full 20 percent of your life raising children, a further 20 percent farming, and almost 2 percent taking part in religious rituals. For over 1 percent of your life you are afflicted with malaria or smallpox. You spend 1.5 billion years having sex and 250 million giving birth. You drink forty-four trillion cups of coffee. As a colonizer, you invade new lands; as the colonized, you suffer your lands taken from you. You feel the rage of the abuser and the pain of the abused. For about 10 percent of your life you are a slaveholder; for about the same length of time, you are enslaved. But now imagine that you live all future lives, too. Your life, we hope, would be just beginning. Even if humanity lasts only as long as the typical mammalian species (one million years), and even if the world population falls to a tenth of its current size, 99.5 percent of your life would still be ahead of you. On the scale of a typical human life, you in the present would be just five months old. And if humanity survived longer than a typical mammalian species—for the hundreds of millions of years remaining until the earth is no longer habitable, or the tens of trillions remaining until the last stars burn out — your four trillion years of life would be like the first blinking seconds out of the womb. Carl Sagan: If history were a football field, all of human history would occupy an area the size of my hand. Bryan Magee: There are always some human beings who live to be a hundred. More do so today than ever before, but there have always been some... It comes as a shock to realise that the whole of civilisation has occurred within the successive lifetimes of sixty people -- which is the number of friends I squeeze into my living room when I have a drinks party. Twenty people take us back to Jesus, twenty-one to Julius Caesar. Samuel Arbesman: "Me (b. 1981) Harold C. Urey, American chemist, Nobel Prize laureate (b. 1893) Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, U.S. Supreme Court justice (b. 1825) William Waldegrave, 1st Baron Radstock, Governor of Newfoundland (b. 1753) George Berkeley, Irish philosopher (b. 1685) King Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland (b. 1630) Johannes Kepler, German astronomer (b. 1571) Shimazu Takahisa, Japanese samurai and warlord (b. 1514) Donato Bramante, Italian architect (b. 1444) Leonardo Bruni, Italian humanist (b. 1374) Petrarch, Italian poet (b. 1304) Emperor Go-Fukakusa of Japan (b. 1243) Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent (b. circa 1160) Eric Jedvardsson, king of Sweden since 1156 (b. c. 1120) Gerard Thom (The Blessed Gerard), founder of the Knights Hospitaller (b. c. 1040) King Duncan I of Scotland (b. 1001)" Andri Snær Magnason: 262 years. That's the length of time you connect across. You'll know the people who span this time. Your time is the time of the people you know and love, the time that molds you, and your time is the time of the people you will know and love, the time that you will shape. You can touch 262 years with your bare hands. Your great grandma taught you, you will teach your great granddaughter, you can have a direct impact on the future right up to the year 2186. Sydney Trent: The whipping post. The lynching tree. The wagon wheel. They were the stories of slavery, an inheritance of fear and dread, passed down from father to son. The boy, barely 5, would listen, awed, as his father spoke of life in Virgini...

Andri Snær Magnason grew up with the wild Icelandic Highlands in his heart and soul. As a student of Nordic mythology he perceives that we are living through ‘mythic times’ such is the extent of the climatic and ecological change that we will see in a lifetime. As a writer, poet and director, and a father of four children, he finds words to help us understand the era we are living through, to question the flawed logic of economic and political systems that plunder our home, the earth, and shows us how a new generation has what it takes to enact the changes we need. Andri Snær Magnason is one of Iceland's most famous and well-known writers. He has written novels, poetry, plays, short stories and essays. He is the only writer to win the Icelandic Literary Award in all categories. His work has been published or performed in more than 35 countries. Andri is very outspoken about the environmental and ecological impacts of climate change, and the effects that certain industries have on the environment. His latest book On Time & Water will be available on March 23rd - and is not only an incredibly personal story, but also a global story, that affects us all. Andri and I discuss: Why he became a writer, given that his whole family is in the medical field The inspiration for his book Writing a climate change book from a different perspective Tourism in Iceland His glacier exploring grandmother His unorthodox approach to writing Why Icelandic, the language, is so difficult And much more... On Time and Water Andri Snær Magnason My Take: Taking a subject that has been written about so often, and giving it a different spin - a personal story that spans generations - is something only a skilled writer, with personal insight and a timeless perspective, can pull off. It is a necessary way of looking at what is the most pressing issue of our time. If we look at the future like we look at our past, we might have a different relationship with time.
