What Really Happens When You Show Up and Get Visible

In short, visibility is getting your message out there and seen. We often associate it with showing up on social media, attending networking events, and gaining speaking engagements but it can take many different forms.  At the root of visibility is connection. Creating connection with your ideal clients, with your audience, with those you're collaborating with, and creating connection by remaining consistent.  In this podcast, I'm sharing six lessons I've learned (so far) when it comes to visibility and showing up and how you can apply it for yourself: Don't bite off more than you can chew if you want to stay consistent Visibility takes time and effort You surprise yourself and will be surprised by others when you decide to get visible  Visibility is a two-way street You'll have some hits and some misses When you decide to get visible, you're more visible Visibility is a buzzword in the entrepreneurial space and everyone wants to be visible, but not everyone wants to embrace all the unique gifts, challenges, and realities of deciding to show up.  Resources Mentioned:  She Built This Lakes Region Event  Emily Aborn Website Marketing Momentum Lab Email me: emily@emilyaborn.com This Shit Works Book by Julie Brown  She Built This Podcast Episodes on Visibility:  127. “[I decided] I’m going to take a break from trying to force things to happen, and to force myself to build a business during a time when everyone is pretty exhausted, struggling, and trying to reinvent and rethink what they’re doing. I just hit pause.” - Angela Lussier Today I am doing something a bit different for the podcast, but it’s a conversation that I feel women entrepreneurs are not having often enough. You’ll meet a very successful woman who is open and honest about the challenges she faced in her life and business since the start of the pandemic, the crossroads she found herself at, and the profound lessons that she’s learned along the way.Angela Lussier started off as a self-described “shy girl” and is now an award-winning professional speaker, six-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and entrepreneur. After starting a career consulting business in 2009 with no marketing budget, Angela decided to offer free workshops to become known in her field. In her first year of business, she gave hundreds of presentations, published her first book, spoke at TEDx, and started to receive calls from corporations and conferences asking her how much she charged to speak. This launched her into a speaking career she never expected to have.Today, Angela is the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, one of Boston’s Best Speakers and she hosts Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. As you’ll hear, Angela has grown so much over the last year, and it was so refreshing to hear someone who has achieved so much share a behind-the-scenes look at what’s happening in her life. If you think that you are alone in struggling at this time, you’re really not. This episode is an eye-opener, and proof that each one of us is worthy. We just need to remember that it is ok to hit pause to enjoy the things in life that really matter.Connect with Angela: https://speakersisterhood.com/ Remember to hit SUBSCRIBE wherever you listen to podcasts! Are you a service-based business who wants to build your brand and get booked solid? I'd taken a break from podcasts when I took on the challenge of reading 200 Books in a Year. A few days ago I found myself between books and decided to see what's new from the podcasts I subscribe to. Angela asked her listeners questions on two podcasts I found inspiring. I wanted to send in my answer by I'd missed her deadline, so I'm answering her questions here. Several years ago (right after the 2016 election, it turns out), I had invited Angela on to the show and we talked about how - when we own and trust our authentic voices - we trust ourselves to do big things. We wrestled with that word: authenticity. And it’s an idea that we all need to wrestle with in our journey to become a better speaker! How can you BeAuthentic in your journey to become a better speaker?

I'm living a life I never expected to have. Growing up, I was shy and didn't think I had much to say. When I was 24 an insightful manager of mine encouraged me to find my voice so I could be a stronger leader. At that time, I was panicking before staff meetings, worried about being singled out, and working harder than ever to fit in. I decided to take him up on his advice and spent the next four years working through my fear of speaking (to anyone, really) and found confidence to not only get on stage and present, but also to quit my job and start a business. At 28, I became an independent career consultant and wrote my first book, The Anti-Resume Revolution. Since then, I've become an award-winning professional speaker, written four more books, helped thousands of people find or create work they love, and got invited to the TEDx stage twice. I am now running the Speaking School for Women, hosting Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. The Speaker Sisterhood is a network of public speaking clubs for women who want to follow their dreams by finding their voice. If you want to be a better facilitator at meetings, feel more confident speaking up, and present yourself with a stronger presence, this club is for you. The first club started in August 2016 in Springfield, MA and in the first few months, five more clubs launched due to popular demand. The network is growing and more clubs are launching all the time. The goal is to create a worldwide network of women who are speaking their truth and becoming role models for the next generation. Why You Should Do What Scares You the Most with Angela LussierAngela Lussier, CEO & Founder of Speaker Sisterhood, joins me in this episode to explore why we should do that very thing that scares us the most! Angela is a 6-time author and two-time TED-X speaker who at one time tried to make herself invisible because of her extreme shyness. She experienced being bullied as a child because she was very tall, so even as an adult, she tried to hide away and remain unseen due to her fear of being ridiculed or rejected. But she realized that hiding herself away was not a good strategy for advancing her career. So, she faced her fears and did what scared her the most. She became a public speaker! In this episode, Angela shares:How she transformed herself from a shy, invisible woman into an inspirational, in-demand public speaker. Why she gave herself the title CEO.The scariest moment of her life when she allowed herself to be incredibly vulnerable - and how that moment gave her the confidence to build her speaking club for women: the Speaker Sisterhood. How she overcame her struggle with valuing her services and asking for money from clients. The power of stepping into our own resistance and fear. Why she wrote her six books and a preview of an exciting new book coming out in November 2019.The vision of Speaker Sisterhood and how this program empowers women to find their authentic voice and speak from their heart with confidence."There's a lot of resistance when we try things we're afraid of, but when we go into that resistance, we often find there's something there for us to learn and grow, and maybe we'll find we even enjoy it!" Written by Brittany ShenkAnyone here know what glossophobia is? It’s a fear of public speaking, and one of the most common fears human beings experience. It’s right up there with spiders, death, heights, and being stuck in small spaces.Public speaking terrifies me. You’d think after 18 years of schooling, two of which were very presentation-focused, my public speaking anxiety would’ve improved? #nope. Sweat soaks my palms. Breathing becomes more difficult, uneven and shallow. My limbs tremble. I experience a ‘presentation blackout.' I walk off stage to recover, and realize I don't remember a single moment of my speech. Oh crap, did I leave an entire part of it out? Did my words match up with the presentation slides? Who did I make eye-contact with...did I even remember to make eye contact..? What were my hands doing the whole time?? Who knows? I can't remember. These questions just bounce around like ping-pong balls in my head.PUBLIC SPEAKING: A TOOL FOR SELF-DISCOVERYRecently, the ecofemmag team has been focusing on dropping down into our heart spaces before sharing our thoughts. Speaking our truths. This takes a bit of inner work though. Speaking our truths first requires that we explore our inner truths - figuring out who we are at our core - which is what our podcast episode this week is all about. Our podcast guest, Angela Lussier, is a two-time TEDx presenter and founder of the Speaker Sisterhood. We discussed the journey that led her to her profession in public speaking, her experiences on a TED stage, and the Speaker Sisterhood business. She’s also really good at cartwheels.SPEAKER SISTERHOODSpeaker Sisterhood club is kinda like Toastmasters, but it’s exclusively for women and focuses on using public speaking as a tool for self discovery. The curriculum Angela developed is dynamic, and includes mind mapping, impromptu speaking, speech development, meditation, and yoga, among other development activities. The women in the Sisterhood are at various levels with their public speaking skills, but they’re all determined to improve. The members learn from each other, guide one another, lift each other up, and hold space for their club members to feel safe and supported. They’re also finding shifts taking place in other areas of their lives, as a result of the program, areas such as romance, work, removing toxic friendships, and speaking authentically.“If you’re thinking about public speaking, and you feel like you're not ready, you should try it anyway. You’ll never be ready. You just have to start.”CONNECT WITH ANGELA LUSSIERThough she isn’t crazy about spending time on social media, you can still find and connect with her on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. One day, while running her career coaching and consulting business, Angela Lussier realized she was tired of constantly filling her new client funnel and trading her hours for dollars. Deciding there had to be a better way to bring her valuable insights to more people, and make money while she slept, Angela took out her journal and asked herself three important questions. The answers to that self-inquiry helped her realize that public speaking was what she loved, what people asked her about most, and where she had been most successful. And she knew she had to build a business around helping women use their voices and develop their public speaking skills. Her first step, an online course called "The Speaking School for Women", was a 6-week online program on building your brand as a speaker, building a signature talk, pricing, expectations and marketing. And when enthusiastic students completed the course, they started asking where they should practice their talks. Her suggestion to try Toastmasters was met with less than enthusiastic response and that's when she hit on another need - women wanted a safe space where they could practice with other women who knew their challenges speaking up as women, and so she held her first event to help women speak up and use their voices. And that's where Speaker Sisterhood was born.

Angela is the host of Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women rated #1 on the inspiring podcasts list by Forbes in 2017. She is a contributor to Huffington Post and her work has been featured on ABC, NBC, Forbes, Virgin, and Entrepreneur. Her motto:  Stop waiting. Start creating. Playing Small Moment Angela’s most defining small moment took place in 2008, when she was employed at an executive recruiting firm. Angela’s job was very refining. She sat at a desk all day, while making calls and reading the same script. Her boss approached her and asked her to create a presentation showcasing how she stood out from the other recruiters. Angela saw this as an amazing opportunity and put together a detailed presentation. After presenting at the meeting, Angela’s boss told her they knew her creativity would be a problem. Angela struggled to fit into the box they made for her, before realizing maybe the problem wasn’t her at all. Style of Leadership Angela leads by example. She shares her stores to inspire and show others how she got to where she is now. Angela also shares tips and shows them the steps they could be taking to move forward. Now that Angela has a staff working for her, she makes sure to ask lots of questions and welcome their ideas so it can be a more productive space, with her team more invested in their jobs. What Are You Excited About? Angela will be on a speaking tour throughout New England in April. The tour will help spread the word about speaking up and asking what for what you need at home, and at work. Angela will also be promoting her new book, The Secret Life of Speaking Up Prequel: 30 Tiny Speaking Adventures. Current Business Challenge As CEO, Angela is often weighed down by financial worries. There is cash flow and revenue, but they are so close to not being a sustainable business. Angela has a goal, and now has a plan to get there by next year. Leadership Practice Angela is a creative person who tends to come up with a lot of ideas, but when there are too many ideas going at once, not much gets accomplished. Angela’s ability to focus on 1 or 2 ideas at a time, and executing them before continuing to new ideas, really helps her lead effectively. Advice For Younger Self Surrounding yourself with coaches, mentors and a support team, is not essentially a bad thing, but you still need to trust and believe in yourself and the things you want at the same time. 100% Jodi: March Update on Goals

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me. This episode is going to be short and sweet this week for a couple of reasons. I am going to give you a quick update on my goals and frankly, I have learned another lesson about spreading myself too thin. I did in fact spread myself too thin but this time it wasn’t about time or physical energy, it was creativity. I took on projects that definitely fit in my calendar and were not going to burn a lot of calories but they were going to take a lot of mental focus and creativity. Before I knew it I was spent and started to have an aversion to sitting at my desk. I started to work with a pad of paper and a pen out in the living room. I lit a candle and made hot cocoa. I tried all my normal tricks and they helped a little but they only got me so far. Although I would love to offer you some new insights this week I’m going to leave it to updates for the sake of my brain. Next week I’m releasing my interview with Angela Lussier of the Speaker Sisterhood and the week after that I will be coming with a fresh and well-rested 100% Jodi episode on The Dip. The Dip is a book by Seth Godin and subtitle is “A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick).” Are you feeling that topic? I am and I’m going to share my experiences with you in just a couple of episodes from here. Until then you know you can always be a part of the community and the conversation in the private facebook group. Go to womentakingthelead.com/group and it will take you right to where you can ask to join and fill out some information about yourself. On to the update on my goals… Goal #1 Build more strength and endurance. Original goal for strength and endurance was to do 300 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session by June 30. Separately, do an unassisted pull-up. Let me start with the pull-up. I said I would have the pull-up bands to help with my goal of doing an unassisted pull-up and I received them last week. Now I just need to start incorporating pull-ups into my workouts during the week. Last month I accomplished my goal of 300 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session on February 20th. In last month’s episode I reported that I’ve changed my goal to doing 1000 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session. I have the plan all mapped out and as of this morning I have done 425 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form in one session. Goal #4 Do a Women Taking the Lead branded full-day event in the summer or fall I’m shooting to have this goal of 1000 burpees accomplished in October.at a fundraising event. In last week’s episode I released the Facebook Live I had done with Emily leRoux of Spartan Races on International Women’s Day. In that conversation we announced that in October, which is breast cancer awareness month, we will be collaborating to do a “Burpees for Boobs” event. I am going to coordinate the event here in Maine but the intention is to have these events happening globally in October. There has not been a lot of extra time to make significant progress on this goal but I have been sharing this goal with a lot of people who are ready to take action as soon as I can give some marching orders. I am crazy-excited about this and it’s almost chaffing me that other things need my attention before I can give this my full focus. However, there will be more to come on this in a couple of months. Goal #2 Be in a relationship One of my milestones was to join a dating app and I announced last month that I did that. Additionally, I had a conversation with a friend about going on the dating app and we went back and forth about what I was looking for. After getting some good critical feedback I declared that I would just start with the intention of meeting good human beings. Since then I have met several good human beings and I’m glad I’ve met them. Some I would want to continue to spend time with but no spark just yet. I have no expectation that this goal will be achieved quickly. My only expectation is that conversations happen that lead to dates, so I can get to know more men. Goal #3 Increase profitability in my business. Goal: have a net income (earnings minus expenses) of $80,000 minimum this year. February’s Profit and Loss report showed a net profit of $493.82. That’s not good and can be partially explained by where my annual bills fall. Some of my largest bills come due in February and March. I’ve also had some legal work done and if you remember from last month I’ve been giving more work to my Virtual Assistant to alleviate my workload as I begin to take on new projects. That has served me well and I am still in the black. However, as I stated last month if I’m going to have a net profit of $80,000 I’m going to need to start recording an average net profit of about $6700 a month. So I’m a little further behind but there is more potential in the coming months. Goal # 5 Outsourcing Goal: (contingent upon profitability goal) to outsource social media content creation and email inbox management. Although I am outsourcing more items to my VA my intention was to outsource social media content creation and the management of my email inbox. I am behind on emails and I don’t feel great about that. Seeing this goal realized is definitely going to take having the funds available to pay for these services. I am hopeful that this will happen sooner rather than later. Again you can be a part of the community and the conversation in the private facebook group. Go to womentakingthelead.com/group and it will take you right to where you can ask to join and fill out some information about yourself. I would love to meet you there. This week on the Moms With Dreams podcast, we’re talking about the hot topic of public speaking. Women often tell me how they want to speak and get paid, but they’re afraid to put themselves out there. I remember how scary it was the first time that I spoke in front of an audience. So I thought it would be neat to have Angela Lussier, an award-winning speaker, three-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and trainer join me on the podcast. Angela is the founder of the Speaking School for Women, an online program that trains women to become paid speakers. She is also the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, a network of speaking clubs for women, and the host of Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. You’re going to love Angela’s bubbly personality and gain a ton of value from our conversation. During this episode, you’ll learn: How Angela became a speaker on purpose but a paid speaker by accident What she did during her first 6 months in Toastmasters The truth about what you must do to become a great public speaker, get over your fear of public speaking, and improve your presentation skills The steps Angela took to book 16 workshops in 5 minutes and 32 workshops on her 2nd day in business! Why Angela thinks rules shouldn’t apply to brand new speakers What you can do as a new speaker to get comfortable on stage The #1 reason why business owners (especially new ones) should be speaking How to find speaking gigs (thanks to my listener, Cheranissa Roach, for asking this question) Why you should start out with unpaid speaking gigs that add value for your target audience What should be included on your speaker one sheet Angela’s Tip for Improving Your Presentation Skills Videotape yourself then watch it in 3 different ways: Watch without sound so you can see your facial expressions and body language. According to Angel, this is “a great book about marketing, standing out and taking risks so you can become that person or company that people remember.” Angela’s Parting Words of Wisdom “Stop waiting - start creating. The longer we wait for opportunity, the longer we wait to start, and the more time we’re wasting. We need to get started now. Then you can start experimenting and the adventure begins. Angela Lussier is a coach, public speaker, and author of three books. In this episode Angela talks about her journey towards creating her own business, how to overcome the imposter syndrome, why you need to live by your own rules, and the importance of play. Here are three things you can learn from Angela: Everyone feels like an imposter If you think you are the only one who feels like an imposter, you are dead wrong. We all feel like imposters in some way or another. Even those who look like they have it all together have their doubts to. Angela believes we are all students at something. “Even experts. Even gurus. Even millionaires. Everyone is a student and they may know a lot about what they’re doing in their business, but they still have a lot to learn somewhere else.” Don’t believe people who tell you they have all the answers. We are all learning together. The key is to have the right mindset. “As long as we have the right intentions of trying to help people and trying to do our best work, then that’s the most we can hope for.” By talking to a bunch of successful people, Angela has come to realize that you can feel like an imposter and still be successful. Don’t let the imposter syndrome keep you from achieving your dreams. Live life by your own rules Too often we feel like we have a standard we need to live up to. We need to be like this person or run our business like that person. But that simply isn’t true. Angela believes the problem is our fear of being ourselves. “I think a lot of people spend a lot of times being scared and afraid to show what they really want to say and what they really want to do and that’s a major problem.” Many people get into business without ever considering the lifestyle they want to live, and that’s a mistake. At one point in her career, Angela was living life for everyone else, and it drove her to exhaustion. It was only when she started creating and living for herself that she felt whole again. Stop living by other people’s expectations. Stop living in fear of being yourself. Determine how you want to live, and make steps towards living that way. The importance of play While creating classes for her community, the Do + Make Business District, Angela had the idea of recording one of the lessons at a playground. Before releasing the lesson, she was scared what her community might think. Would they think it was unprofessional? Would they taker her seriously? The beautiful thing is, her community loved the idea. They enjoyed seeing her having fun and liked the idea of having fun with business. This gave Angela the courage to experiment even more. She did classes dressed in costumes and played different characters. She wanted to make learning fun again. Angela also believes in playing as an adult. “Just because you’re a kid doing something doesn’t mean it’s a kid thing.
