Despite the fact that women have been socialized to be nice above all else, it's not actually a very noble goal, as my co-host this week, Terri Trespicio, breaks down today. Does that mean you should go out and let your a-hole flag fly? Or become outright mean? Goodness, no. It just means you set your sights on something different--something that takes a lot less energy than being nice AND that gives you more energy, because it's gratifying. Today's surprising strategy for a better new year is to Un-plan Your Life. Which, depending on how much of a planner you are, may sound like just a completely ludicrous idea. BUT, as this week's co-host, Terri Trespicio, will talk us through--plans change all the time. Multiple times. And sometimes, even when your plans work out, you've put so much stock in them that you can feel lost now that they're no longer on the horizon. So what do you do instead? When Terri Trespicio was invited to do a TEDx Talk, she had no idea what subject she would speak on. Her talk now has over eight million views. Years later when she decided she wanted to write a book, she faced the same issue. She was told to include the ideas from her TEDx Talk, but she didn't have a solid idea of the book's overall theme or purpose. The first draft of her book looked very different from the book it is today, which Mel Robbins describes as “A. MUST. READ.”In this episode of “Authors Who Lead,” I talk with Terri about her book, Unfollow Your Passion: How to Create a Life That Matters to You, and how to create a life you enjoy.Want to become a published author? Terri Trespicio is an award-winning writer, speaker, and brand advisor. She works directly with entrepreneurs and business owners to develop their brand messaging, working with companies such as Wells Fargo Advisors, Baird Financial, and Northwestern Mutual. Terri is also a stand-up comic and performed a popular TEDx talk. Similarly, she has brought her knowledge to several speaking engagements, even being featured on popular shows like The Martha Stewart Show and Today. In this episode… When receiving advice on where to take their life, many people have been told to “follow their passion.” While this can be helpful for some, this vague encouragement can be a nonstarter. The saying is predicated on an ideal that is not always realistic or even desirable in the long run. What if there was a better way to find purpose and success? Terri Trespicio is a speaker, advisor, and writer who has thoroughly explored this concept throughout her career. Her perspective on thriving in business is different from many but might be what someone needs to find their way. In this episode of Access to Anyone, Michael Roderick is joined by Terri Trespicio to discuss her novel and her view on navigating the business world. They dissect the idea of passions, why this advice can be misleading, and how to find fulfillment outside of that framework. The two then go into the challenges of relationship building, knowing when to say no, and becoming more than a service provider.

This week during the great hiatus of 2023 (for this podcast, anyway, although if there's something you can take a break from, I support you!), I'm replaying the three episodes with the most listens. Today's is from the last week of 2021, when my friend Terri Trespicio, author of the book Unfollow Your Passion, was my co-host for the week and shared several anti-resolutions for the year ahead. This was far and away the most popular anti-resolution–and was, in fact, the most popular episode I've ever released. It is: Stop Being Nice. Despite the fact that women have been socialized to be nice above all else, it's not actually a very noble goal. Does that mean you should go out and let your a-hole flag fly? Or become outright mean? Goodness, no. It just means you set your sights on something different--something that takes a lot less energy than being nice AND that gives you more energy, because it's gratifying. No matter what the activity - whether it is when we are writing an email, putting together a bio, giving a speech, starting a conversation at a networking event - it's always the first word that is the hardest to utter - but then from there the opposite happens - we let the words take over - we go on without making the point - we use words we don't need and cover up what we are really trying to say with superfluous language.Listen to this week's episode as I talk with Terri Trespicio, (a repeat guest) to discuss how to connect with anyone - by not letting words get in the way of sounding human. “Creativity is a muscle, not a metric.” If you hold back because you're afraid of feedback, you won't have a life infused with creativity. After all, your attention budget is limited, so where do you want to spend it? In short, visibility is getting your message out there and seen. We often associate it with showing up on social media, attending networking events, and gaining speaking engagements but it can take many different forms. At the root of visibility is connection. Creating connection with your ideal clients, with your audience, with those you're collaborating with, and creating connection by remaining consistent. In this podcast, I'm sharing six lessons I've learned (so far) when it comes to visibility and showing up and how you can apply it for yourself: Don't bite off more than you can chew if you want to stay consistent Visibility takes time and effort You surprise yourself and will be surprised by others when you decide to get visible Visibility is a two-way street You'll have some hits and some misses When you decide to get visible, you're more visible Visibility is a buzzword in the entrepreneurial space and everyone wants to be visible, but not everyone wants to embrace all the unique gifts, challenges, and realities of deciding to show up. I remember listening to Terri's Ted Talk Back In 2020 and it truly helped me ease the pressure from following this conventional idea of following your passion. Watching that video made me think how amazing it would be to chat with someone who actually is creating her own thought process, ditching the ideas conventional ideas and thinking for herself. And it happened in this podcast..In this episode, we spoke on how to think for yourself, what questions to ask, which ideas to challenge, marrying when you really want to not out of fear, why it is okay to still be figuring out, and many more.At the end of the podcast, you will feel a little less. pressure and more in control of your own life. In Unfollow Your Passion, Terri Trespicio—whose TEDx talk has more than seven million views—skewers the platitudes, inverts conventional wisdom, and calls into question everything you think you need to succeed: passion (fun, but fleeting), plans (flimsy at best), and a bucket list (eye roll), to name a few.
We are so often told that one of our fundamental goals in life is to find our “passion” and follow it. If we can identify this goal, we are led to believe, then everything will magically fall into place. According to Terri Trespicio, our guest on the podcast today, if we are busy looking for our passion we might well miss out on opportunities that may come our way. These opportunities may be related to our work or even our relationships. Terri makes it clear that it's “OK not to know” as it relates to finding our passion, and that surpasses, if we are available for them, can be very fulfilling. Many people seem to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out “what they are supposed to do.” But as Terri, quoting her mother counters, “You create life by living it.” Reading Terri's new book, UNfollow Your Passion, might well lead the reader to recognize that he or she is letting someone else set the rules for what is their life. And the book helps us understand both how this happens, and importantly, what we can do to put ourselves back in the driver's seat. ==== TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 2:10 Picking a Career Path 6:11 Romantic Partnership 8:49 Comfort and Discomfort 18:38 The Things that we “Swallow” 23:14 Learning from MLMs 28:45 Tools for Redirection 40:25 Conclusion ==== Terri Trespicio is an award-winning writer, in-demand speaker, and brand advisor whose TEDx talk, “Stop Searching for Your Passion,” has been viewed more than seven million times. March is Women's History Month and we will be featuring some outstanding female FOMO Sapiens on the podcast all month long for a special break between seasons. Some people confuse comfort with complacency. Award-winning writer, speaker, and brand advisor Terri Trespicio, however, does not. Following the publication of her new book, Unfollow Your Passion, Terry discusses why her TedX Talk “Stop Searching for Your Passion” was so hugely popular that it has been viewed more than 7 million times while dispelling the idea that following a passion is the only path to a fulfilling or meaningful life. Terri explores the process of how we identify goals, how we define passion, and why you don't have to embrace a lifetime outside of your comfort zone in order to create a life that matters. Terry explains how to evaluate your passion or goals: by determining if you are subscribing to the agendas of others and conforming to society's “ideas” of what success looks like or if you are truly driven by personal desire for meaning and fulfillment. The challenges continue, they keep coming, sometimes seemingly without end. Conversations with the remarkable guests from Season Two elevated my spirit and provided me with tangible insights. I hope you glean inspiration from them as I did; the goal in life should be to lift each other up. Here are my reflections and takeaways from our guests on Season Two:Marten Bostrom rebuilt his body, focusing on the technical aspects of his sport, enabling him to win the World Orienteering Championship. Clarion Johnson shares a family legacy of courage, providing the fortitude to embrace medicines' most difficult specialties, and becoming global medical director of Exxon Mobil. 2004 Olympian Carrie Tollefson reminds us to ease back on the throttle, believing in ourselves and the process.Chuck Garcia, master storyteller and Columbia University leadership communications professor, teaches us the power of momentum and positive action. Chuck beautifully illustrates these strategies in, A Climb to the Top, his book and podcast. The Ripleys show us the benefits of falling short of initial goals, rallying our resolve, and strengthening our faith. Terri Trespicio calls us to action. Terri gives us permission to unsubscribe from untruths in her new book, Unfollow Your Passion, where she guides us to sharpen our skills, unlock our creative genius, calling us to show up and trust. Life transitions can be difficult. World-class marathoner Brett Gotcher encourages us to leverage the power of perspective, focusing on positive memories instead of negative departures. Loretta Claiborne, the most decorated Special Olympian of all time, calls us - regardless of our circumstances - to give from the heart to those in need. Conservation giant and CEO of Trout Unlimited, Chris Wood emphasizes a willingness to learn and demonstrates that the humility to embrace the role of student translates to fulfilling one's purpose. ParaTriathlon champion and former Marine Corps Sargent Zach Stinson moved beyond anger after a bomb resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee and numerous other injuries. After thirty-five surgeries and grueling rehabilitation, Zach transcended bitterness, opening providence and provisions for his family, and new possibilities for him to harness his athletic talents. Closing Thoughts...I'm grateful to the guests who shared their stories with me. I've taken away tangible strategies, real-time approaches, and new ways of understanding—messages I'll continue to employ when the road gets tougher. Continued thanks to Andrew Hollingworth—master editor and sound engineer. Thanks to all those who have listened, cheered, and championed this project; we are grateful for your encouragement and support. Which stories move you forward? How have these stories impacted you? What would you like to hear next? Let us know. Until then I look forward to being with you on the next season of Intrinsic Drive™.Intrinsic Drive™ is produced by Ellen Strickler and Phil Wharton. On episode 25 for The School of Unlearning podcast, we are joined by author and entrepreneur, Terri Trespicio. Terri's new book, "Unfollow Your Passion" is a provocative inquiry into some of life's common assumptions. This podcast is filled with moments of unlearning about relationships, how we blindly inherent narratives that don't serve us and Terri argues that our best growth comes within our comfort zone, not outside of it. On this podcast you will learn: Who has influenced Terri while she was growing up How comedy has shaped Terri's voice Why Terri maintains she is at her best when she allows for space in failure and growth Disappointing someone isn't the end of the world, seeking to always please is. Why our innate drive for connection leads us to accept things that don't serve us. Why its essential to decide who you will listen to and who you won't. Terri's relationship with saying, "no", and why saying "no" doesn't always needs to come with an explanation. How women have been influenced to always feel they need to be in a relationship, and why it's unfair to feel "less than" if you are single. What a "full body yes" feels like Why getting to a "yes" requires a lot of "no's". Why saying "yes" when you don't need it, it's a recipe for drama. Why drama is expensive in relationships and on teams. Why "discomfort isn't a guarantee for growth, its a condition." Real growth does not come outside of our comfort zone, despite what struggle/hustle culture tells us. Terri urges us to expand our comfort zone so that we can live and work inside it. Passion is an experience, not a state, it's not a talent and we need to stop seeking it all the time. Why our needy pursuit of passion is ironically draining us and largely, diverting us from the joy of living. Terri on unlearning: "When you unlearn, its not a forgetting, its purposeful, learning is the acquisition of knowledge and application in the world, unlearning is amending, its what editing is to writing. Unlearning is the next step of knowledge." Quotes from Terri: “As soon as you start to monetize something in order to legitimize it, you've lost it.” "Passion is when energy is moving through you, where can you allow that to happen? “The minute you get fixed and rigid about finding passion in one thing, you've killed your own vibe.” "Pay attention to where industry or the need to do a thing comes in. Beware of trying to sell or market every last ounce of passion you have. To learn more about Terri Trespicio, click here. Don't we all wish things would just go according the plan? But that's not life. What happens when things don't go as planned? Or if we don't actually know what our future looks like? Our guest, Terri Trespicio, says don't be wed to an outcome, which we can't control; instead be wed to something we can control: the planning. The best outcomes result from planning and preparation, and those are skills we can develop. Terri's forthcoming book is called Unfollow Your Passion: How to Create a Life That Matters To You (available now for pre-order at unfollowyourpassion.com). Confucius told us that if we choose a job we love, we'll never work another day in our lives. This idea that we need to find our singular passion is a message that starts in our childhood and weighs on us as adults. Terri Trespicio is challenging us to rethink the conventional wisdom around what we need to succeed in her new book, Unfollow Your Passion. In this episode we talk about owning your story, the value of staying in your comfort zone, and why embracing boredom could be your path to creativity and passion.
Many of us have been told that the one way to find meaning in life is to follow our passion. Terri Trespicio takes issue with this advice and offers a new way to live life on your own terms in her book "Unfollow Your Passion." Terri joins us to share how we can unhook ourselves from others' agendas and unlock our own unique path to meaning.
In this episode, Coach Cami chats with her guest, award-winning writer, speaker and fellow creative Terri Trespicio, about the creative process and how we somehow always manage to beat ourselves up inside it. Learn ways to tame that nagging inner critic, what it means to become a sovereign person and to own all your choices, among other things. An expert on not following your passion, Terri's TEDx talk, Stop Searching for Your Passion, has recently surpassed 7 million views, and her upcoming book, Unfollow Your Passion, gives countless examples of why “follow your passion” is just plain bad advice. Make sure to listen for Terri's special offer (it's amazing!) for people who pre-order her book. Are you ready to dive deep?
Every kid is asked the same question, what do you want to be when you grow up? Like how are we supposed to have any freaking clue what we want to be when we are a kid. Not to mention that half the jobs out there didn't even exist when I was a kid. For this reason and many others I think this is a terrible question - it plants the seed that in order to be passionate about something you have to know from a very young age that you want to do that thing. What if instead of trying to find our passion, we decided to unfollow it? Instead of searching it out and trying to conjure it into existence we simply let it find us, through the process of living and learning? Tune in this week as I talk with sought after speaker and brand advisor, Terri Trespicio whose Ted Talk Stop Searching For Your Passion has been viewed more than 7 million times about her upcoming book Unfollow Your Passion. Whew, we really start to get kind of vulnerable here. After kicking off with a little bit of a success recap for the week, Mike and John get into the concept of what direction we have taken, or actually, the lack of direction we have. We discuss a video from Terri Trespicio about Passion in one's career. She claims, contrary to many career coaches, that people should not follow their passions. The video is titled "Stop searching for your passion" (Terri Trespicio | TEDxKC from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MBaFL7sCb8) We also discuss a Japanese concept to improve work and life called "ikigai", which looks for the intersection of what you love, and what you're good at, and what the world needs, with what you can get paid for. It's a term that embodies the idea of happiness in living, and, "Essentially, ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning." We cap the episode with two Final Thoughts!
