If your head is spinning with marketing messages from high-profile coaches insisting you need a team, a course, a 6 or 7 figure business, when what you really want is flexibility, freedom to do something you love on your own terms, this episode is your permission slip to have a simple, sustainable solo business. My returning guest, Maggie Patterson, joins me to chat about the significance of intentionally staying small as a solopreneur and why this approach can be especially beneficial for neurodivergent entrepreneurs. Together, we challenge the notion that choosing a small business is a sign of playing small or self-sabotage and instead highlight the strengths and preferences that can come with choosing to remain a team of one.Episode Highlights:The Solo Advantage: Maggie explains why being an intentionally small business owner can be the best option for neurodivergent individuals, offering greater flexibility and reducing stress.Cultural Conditioning and Entrepreneurship: Maggie & I unravel how the cultural celebration of hyper-successful entrepreneurship models can be misaligned with many neurodivergent experiences.Recognizing Personal Capacity: Our conversation explores the importance of understanding one's own sensory and emotional capacities and why it's crucial for sustainable business operations.Reality of Business Growth: We discuss the myths around scaling businesses and the reality of what it means for the entrepreneur's role to shift from creator to manager and marketer. Dismissing Magical Thinking: Maggie emphasizes the importance of discerning which ideas to pursue and recognizing that not every new venture has what it takes to succeed.Navigating Neurodivergence and Business: With personal anecdotes, the episode highlights the importance of understanding one's unique neurodivergent traits and leveraging them for business success.Challenging Toxic Advice: You'll find yourself nodding along to our critiques of the flawed business advice often targeted at women and neurodivergent individuals, encouraging you to trust your own judgment.Maggie Who?Maggie Patterson is a seasoned entrepreneur, consultant, and small service business owner who is passionate about demystifying societal conditioning around business success and encouraging entrepreneurs to prioritize their well-being. Service business owners always need a strategy. It's foundational to their business and a part of their work process. It impacts how clients work with them and the quality of service they provide. Is marketing unethical? What about tactics like scarcity or significance? Should copywriters be using these persuasive elements in their copy? If not, why not? And when is it acceptable? Our guests for the 385th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast are Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur, hosts of their own podcast called Duped where they talk about the misuse of persuasion in marketing. Between the four of us, we figured out the answers to these questions and more (almost). Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Duped Podcast Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: At some point in your writing career, most copywriters bump up against a persuasion tactic that just feels off. Or worse, they're asked to do something they don't feel good about. Maybe it's as simple as adding a deadline timer to an offer with no real deadline. Or it might be something worse… like selling programs to people who can't afford them, or who will never get the promised results. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira Hug and I had a chance to speak with the dynamic duo behind the Duped Podcast, Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur. We talked about those dubious marketing tactics, when it's okay to use them, and when you need to be the adult in the room who says, this is going to far. If you've ever wondered where the line is when it comes to marketing ethics, this episode will give you something to think about. But first, I want to tell you abou The Copywriter Underground. You've heard about the library of training that will help you build a profitable business. You've heard about the monthly coaching, and the almost weekly copy critiques and the helpful group of members ready with support and even the occasional lead. Last week we recorded an exclusive training for Underground members on the diagnostic scorecard that helps you close just about any prospect or project on a sales call. It's the kind of business secret you don't read about in free facebook groups or even on most email lists. But right now, you can watch that training and get the diagnostic scorecard to help you close more projects when you go to thecopywriterclub.com/tcu and join as a member.  But hurry, that training disappears in a few days. Now, let's hear what Michelle and Maggie had to say… Kira Hug: All right, welcome, Michelle, Maggie. So good to have both of you here. Let's kick off with the catalyst. What was the catalyst for Duped and that partnership between the two of you? Michelle Mazur: Well, I believe it started with me. Maggie and I vox a lot about things we're seeing and chatting about it. I sent her a Voxer message and said, hey, I think we should do a limited series podcast episode where we dive into some of these topics. And that was the catalyst. We were already creating the content in our Voxer conversations. And we're like, well, what if we just open that up to a wider audience? And we intended just to do, I think, eight episodes and maybe a second season. And then we realized, oh, wow, we have a lot to talk about here. Rob Marsh: So for anybody who's not already heard duped or aware of duped or even met you, Maggie and Michelle, tell us a little bit about, let's just lay that groundwork. What is Duped and why should people be listening to it? Maggie Patterson: So Duped is a consumer advocacy podcast that is really designed to help consumers in the online business space make more critical, nuanced decisions. Because what we tend to see is a lot of stories of, I bought XYZ, or I signed up with this coach, and I had a really negative experience. And from my perspective as a business owner, there's two ways we can approach this. We can try to get every business owner to reform their practices, which we're never all going to agree.

During the pandemic, we were told one thing seemingly over and over again: You need to start a membership. You need a community. That's the only way you can scale your business. And to be honest, I fed into it. I believed that a membership was the key to stop trading for hours for dollars. But the truth is I was trading more hours for fewer dollars. See, what most solopreneurs don't realize (what I didn't realize for a long time) is that you're always trading hours for dollars. That's what work is. The key difference is how many hours you're trading for how many dollars. And that's what Maggie Patterson is here to talk to us about today. See, when the pandemic ended, we both noticed something: many of those people who were preaching the importance of basing your business off a community or membership were going back to one thing: services. Because when you do services right, you can make a lot of money. Today, Maggie, who has over 15 years of experience successfully selling client services, tells us the key to unlocking more income: selling strategy. Top TakeawaysIt's important to understand what kind of business you want to run. 1-to-1 business is a lot different from a 1-to-many business. And they require different strategies. The key is in pricing. Don't just price on gut feeling. Tether it to some reality (like how much money you need to make to pay yourself, and run the business), and then listen for feedback. The market will tell you if you're priced correctly. Too many solopreneurs give the strategy away for free in their proposal. They say exactly what they're going to do. Instead, hold paid strategy sessions (sometimes called Discovery projects) where you get paid to truly understand the scope, and give the client something tangible. Show NotesMaggie PattersonReverse Salary CalculatorThe Best Advice I Never Took Sponsored by Liquid WebJoin my FREE Newsletter, Podcast Workflows ★ Support this podcast ★

In the final episode before a self-care break, Candice is thrilled to sit down with Kathleen Oh, a fellow writer, coach, and new-age wellness survivor. Kathleen lays the foundation for her cult-like experiences, sharing how she was born into high-control environments. She opens up about how the resulting black&white thinking shaped her choices at home as a young mother, and as in her work as a coach. Kathleen expresses her regret and speaks openly about how she is still coming to terms with the ways in which she spread misinformation and unknowingly used coercive sales tactics. She and Candice trade stories about the love&light ‘cult'ures they occupied, underscoring just how much the lies they learned - and helped to perpetuate through their work - are really just a byproduct of capitalist-cult, supremacist self-help rhetoric. Kathleen breaks down the real differences between therapy and coaching and shares how she learned (the hard way) what can happen when coaches are not, in fact, trauma-informed. Candice shares about the boss-babe business training she invested in, and Kathleen has an even more humbling story to share when it comes to predatory sales practices. The episode wraps with a variety of resources for folks who want to learn more about a small-yet-growing counterculture of coaches who are calling themselves, and one another, ‘out'… with the hope of mitigating the culty and harmful business practices that run rampant in the coaching industry.Kathleen Oh (she/her) is a Coach, writer, and safe drug use advocate and educator specializing in psychedelic integration. She offers coaching services focusing on the continued care and well-being of clients from high-stress, high-performance careers as the center of their work. She practices trauma-informed and integrative, positive psychology, solution-focused coaching and Internal Family Systems Informed approaches informed by an anti-oppressive framework. Kathleen openly practices as a learner and student of cultic studies. She is continuing to decondition and recover from systems of cultic indoctrination. This combination of skills is uncommon in coaching communities. She has lost close friends and relationships with her community members to controversial conspiracy groups. ohmyheart.substack.com | coachkathleenoh.com | IG: @therealcoachohReferenced In This Episode:Lalich Center on Cults & Coercion >> https://lalichcenter.org/Gerette Buglion, Writing to Reckon >> https://www.gerettebuglion.com/Maggie Patterson on IG @smallbusiness bossTarzan Kay on IG @tarzan_kayThe stories and opinions shared in this episode are based on personal experience and are not intended to malign any individual, group, or organization.Join The Deeper Pulse at Patreon for weekly bonus episodes + other exclusive bonus content. >> https://www.patreon.com/thedeeperpulseFollow The Deeper Pulse on IG @thedeeperpulse + @candiceschutter for more regular updates.

How do you decide who to trust in your business? When you're thinking about joining a program or hiring a service provider, do you make those people earn your trust, or do you just default to trusting them? When we first meet someone new, we want to believe the best in people. We want to believe that they are trustworthy, so we trust them until they give us a very good reason not to.  However, today on the podcast, my guest and co-host of Duped, Maggie Patterson, is turning that notion on its head. She believes that in online business, we should be skeptical at first until we're given a good reason to trust someone, that trust should be earned and not just given. So how do you earn trust and how do you know who to trust? Maggie and I are diving into all of that today. Maggie Patterson is the creator of Small Business Boss and has two decades of experience in communications, marketing, and client services. She's worked with everyone from solopreneurs to the world's biggest brands and today she's a mentor and advocate for do no harm business practices in the online space. There's a game Maggie Patterson, my co-host of Duped, plays with me all the time. It's called “Can I Tell What Makes You an Expert?” We go to an about page of someone who's doling out advice like candy on Instagram and see if we can tell why they're credible to speak on this topic. If we can figure it out, great! They earn our respect and trust. But nine times out of ten, I have no clue why they are credible to do the work they do or say the things they say. It's no wonder it's so easy to be duped and burned in the online space. Real experts who know what they're doing and how to help you are hard to find online, but pseudo-experts are freaking everywhere. So how do you know who to trust online? How do you vet them? And if you're thinking about hiring a messaging strategist, what should you be looking for? In this episode: Three questions to ask when you're vetting a program or offer How to gauge factors of trust–care, sincerity, reliability, and competence–in messaging strategists Red flags to watch out for in promised results, timelines, and testimonials Why you should steer clear of anyone who promises you “magnetic messaging” Learn more about Michelle Mazur: Communication Rebel Three Word Rebellion Request a free 1:1 Chat  Finally Nail Your Message Resources: Duped: Vetting Coaches and Programs: What to Watch For  The Thin Book of Trust: An Essential Primer for Building Trust at Work, Charles Feltman

Just imagine a high school art teacher, wife, and mom trying to start an online business.  She loves her students and teaching itself but all the rules of the profession are sucking the joy right out of her.  In spite of her boundless enthusiasm and endless creativity, plus years of side hustle experience, like the rest of us, this wantrepreneur turns to the alleged “experts” in the field, the high priestesses of online marketing.  The ones who make 'the rules". These celebrity coaches and online marketing gurus have made multi-million dollars selling their courses and coaching programs, and they have pages and pages of testimonials gushing over them, so it had to be “The Way”, and they had a right to make The Rules, only it wasn't and they don't.  Several courses later, this teacher, whom we will call Deanna (because that's actually her name) is not only not getting anywhere closer to the promised land of the laptop lifestyle, but she is starting to feel just as disillusioned with this whole online entrepreneur thing as she was as a teacher.  See the real problem? Is poor Deanna doing something wrong or did she simply get caught up in the “results, not typical” marketing hype that has made celebrity coaches fabulously wealthy while leaving most of their students blaming themselves for not being one of the success stories they bring on stage at their high ticket sales events?   Well, as you might have guessed, Deanna is today's guest on The Driven Woman Podcast and she is also the graphic designer and coach that I recently hired and will start working with in June, to help me write MY own rules when it comes to Instagram.   Here is what you'll learn in today's episode: How Deanna and I met:  In Angie Trueblood's Podwize membership Why she broke up with social media for 6 weeks and what it taught her Why Deanna no longer considers the $$$ she spent on courses to be a total waste What she thinks is the key to dealing with the fear of being vulnerable onlineWant more Deanna Seymour? Waitlist for “Eff That!” Instagram Community: https://deannaseymour.com/shop/Website: https://deannaseymour.com/“Eff That! Being the most talented person in your field doesn't guarantee the best client experience. If you are difficult to work with, don't meet your deadlines, have a bad attitude, are disorganized, or don't communicate well, clients aren't going to have a good experience with your business. Your client experience matters just as much, if not more than the product you are producing. This week, I'm joined by Maggie Patterson, founder of two successful service-based businesses. She is the editorial director at Scoop Studios, a content marketing agency for tech companies. She also is the founder of Small Business Boss where she acts as a consultant for other service-based business owners.Maggie knows firsthand the impact of having a truly excellent experience around your expertise. On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview communications strategist Maggie Patterson, who works with entrepreneurs and corporations to help them craft intelligent communications strategies. Maggie believes that all the marketing in the world won't get us anywhere if you don't have the right message in place, which is where stories come in!  Maggie helps her clients figure out what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. She is the host of Moxie Marketing podcast, and has more than 15 years of experience. If you want to know why stories work in selling your product or service, then you must listen to this podcast!   Main Questions Asked: -       How do stories help us sell our products and services? -       How do you weave stories in when you are giving valuable information? -       How do you help people figure out what stories are relevant and will help them? -       How do you tell a story that is average and doesn't seem relevant? -       Do you have any thoughts on social media flaws and saying too much? -       Talk about your Moxie Marketing podcast and building that platform. -       What is your experience in growing an audience but not obsessing over it?   Key Lessons Learned:   Storytelling -       There is a definite science behind why stories work. -       A story activates multiple parts of your brain. Your imagination fills in the blanks, and turns a story into a memory. -       If you hear about facts and logic, only two zones are activated, which are rational areas. -       Stories stay with us longer than facts and figures. -       A micro story is adding something memorable that creates a connection with the audience.   Entrepreneurs and Stories -       As entrepreneurs, we get stuck on the idea that the story should be about us.   -       Ask yourself where you can start to share your personality (social media or blog posts?). -       Start to look at how your experiences fit into your personal story. -       We have a tendency to get stuck in the ‘Hero's Journey,' which gets tired.   Finding Your Story -       No matter how average or boring we think our story is, we all have defining moments. -       Due to the stories we consume, we now expect them to all be inspirational. -       Implicit egoism is people liking and wanting to connect with people just like themselves. -       Never underestimate the power of the relatable story. -       Define what your story will be and how you will show up in the world. -       You don't have to expose all your ‘dirty laundry.' Storytelling is always done on your terms.   Vulnerability, Social Media and Business -       We have been trained on the idea that we need to be vulnerable and transparent. However, this can go too far and put you in ‘victim territory,' which can be a bad thing for your business. -       If you are sharing too much online or stories that are not appropriate to your business, you could attract the wrong type of clients or alienate existing clients. -       If you are ‘free and loose' with telling your stories, start to think and post about what is impactful. -       Remember that you can't own every issue and niche. -       Everything about you online reflects on you as a business owner.   Podcasting -       If you are looking at a podcast as a marketing tool, then get focused on the purpose and mission of values rather than the downloads. -       Make sure you know where your podcast fits in with your business. -       Success comes in so many different ways and can only be defined by you. -       Remember every download is someone letting you in.   Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer.
