Really .... how does the earth work? Dr Sandra McLaren walked us through Earths thermal engine in our previous episode, and now it's time to untangle plate tectonics and how it built (and continues to build!!!!) the planet we know today. Change is the only permanent thing about Earth. Our landscapes are transient, from mountains to oceans to rivers to plains. But have you ever wondered what makes our earth so *dynamic* compared to our solar systems other rocky planets?

From Indonesia’s declaration of independence in 1945 up until today, the relationship between Indonesian nationalism, Islam, and modernity has been a key subject of debate. One of the central figures in this debate was the great writer, journalist, public intellectual – and pious Muslim from Minangkabau, West Sumatra, Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah, better known by his pen-name, Hamka. Largely self-taught, Hamka was one of Indonesia’s most prolific writers. Between the 1920s and his death in 1981 he penned novels, short stories, biographies, memoirs, self-help books, travel books, histories, and many studies of Islam, including a famous thirty-volume commentary on the Qur’an. In Hamka's Great Story: A Master Writer’s Vision of Islam for Modern Indonesia (University of Wisconsin Press, 2016), James R. Rush traces the development of Hamka’s thinking as expressed through these works against the backdrop of Indonesia’s tumultuous modern history, including late Dutch colonial rule, the Japanese occupation, the Indonesian revolution, the Sukarno years, and the New Order military dictatorship under Suharto. Since the end of the New Order regime in 1998 some scholars have referred to a "conservative turn" in Islam in Indonesia. Listen to James Rush explain how an appreciation of Hamka and his influence in twentieth century Indonesia can help us better understand what is happening in Indonesian Islam today. To write a comprehensive history of Southeast Asia is a task reserved for precious few scholars: historians of unrivaled skill and formidable knowledge. Anthony Reid is among them. His new book, A History of Southeast Asia: Critical Crossroads (Wiley Blackwell, 2015), is almost impossibly vast in scale and ambitious in scope, ranging across familiar territory while drawing out major new themes in the history of one of the world’s most diverse yet nevertheless coherent regions. Writing against the “seductive pressure” to view past political and cultural arrangements as analogues of our own, Reid draws on the resources of a life spent studying and writing Southeast Asian history to take the reader on a journey from the nagara polities and stateless majorities of a thousand years ago to the rise of high modernism in the places that today we know as Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam. His strong engagement with major debates will appeal to specialists, yet the book is also highly accessible to students new to study of the region. Tony Reid joins New Books in Southeast Asian Studies to discuss civilizations without cities, global war in the Indian Ocean, state evasion, the shared poverty of late colonial rule, and the role of women in the economies and societies of Southeast Asia from earliest times to the present day. David Brabham will make his long-awaited racing debut at the iconic Goodwood Revival meeting this weekend, 12-14 September. It’s astounding to think that in his extensive 30-year career the sportscar legend is yet to take on the historic 2.4-mile circuit in race conditions. The Le Mans 24 Hours victor and double ALMS Champion is relishing the opportunity to contest the St Mary’s Trophy races on Saturday and Sunday. He will drive the 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta, hailing from the same year that his father Sir Jack, a regular Revival supporter, won the first Formula 1 World Championship in a rear-engined car, the Cooper-Climax T51. David commented; "I am really looking forward to racing at the Goodwood Revival and my first race at this historic track. It holds a special place for the Brabham family as my father, two brothers and I all had our very first UK race car tests at this iconic circuit. “I have heard so much about the event from my racing friends and I knew, when my schedule allowed, I should come and compete. It’s great to finally have that chance. I have not driven the Alfa Romeo Gulietta Ti before, but I am sure it will be a lot of fun.” Racing at 12.55 on Saturday and 12.40 on Sunday, David will join the crowd-pleasing line-up of fellow celebrity drivers, including Anthony Reid, Jackie Oliver, Mark Blundell and BTCC drivers past and present, all driving a stunning array of saloon cars from the Fifties.
Former World Touring Car champion Rob Huff will break new ground at the Goodwood Revival as he becomes the first current professional racer to take part in the Goodwood Trophy. Huff, 34, will drive Richard Last’s Parnell-MG, which contested the 1938 Donington Grand Prix, in the race for pre-1950 Formula Libre machinery. Among the 2012 WTCC champion’s rivals will be Alfa Romeos formerly raced by Raymond Sommer and Achille Varzi and ERAs once campaigned by Prince Bira and Dick Seaman. His St Mary’s Trophy machine will be an Austin Westminster in the same specification as the car taken to the inaugural British Touring Car Championship crown by Jack Sears in 1958. He will contest part one of the event on Saturday. The Westminster will be campaigned by Nick Naismith in part two of the event for 1950s production saloons on Sunday, with Huff aiming to go one better than in 2012, when he and Desmond Smail were second overall in an Austin A40 – Huff having won his part of the contest after an entertaining battle with Anthony Reid’s Jaguar.
You never quite know who's going to turn up to these podcasts at Goodwood – we camp ourselves out in the drivers' club and hope that some of the famous names at the Festival of Speed will want to come and have a chat before or after their lunch. This year didn't disappoint as Anthony Reid, Henri Pescarolo, Nelson Piquet, Emerson Fittipaldi, John McGuinness, Stuart Graham, Danny Sullivan and Vic Elford all gave us some of their time. Former British Touring Car Championship ace Anthony Reid brought the house down at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed after recording the fastest time of the day. In a change from previous Festivals, this year’s running saw more than 45 cars vie to take part in the top 20 ‘shoot-out’ finale. David Tetley’s fearsome ‘Stars ’n’ Stripes’ Opel Manta V8 kicked things off, recording a time of 57.34sec, the times tumbling until Rod Millen’s Pikes Peak Toyota had an ‘off’ following a grassy moment exiting Molecomb. The Kiwi emerged unscathed, and even managed a smile, but his ‘truck’ had bent front suspension and bodywork damage. Following the restart, a psyched-up Reid blasted his Chevron GT3 racer up the hillclimb course in a staggering 46.46sec, the Scot reaching 131mph on his run. He narrowly edged out the favourite Gary Ward, who streaked up the hill in 46.80sec aboard his Leyton House-Judd CG901B Grand Prix car. However, fastest man in terms of outright speed was Group C Jaguar XJR8/9 driver Justin Law who recorded a belief-beggaring 142mph across the line. It was a suitably dramatic conclusion to a thrilling even
