From it's early days in the 1920's news was an important part of radio. The first newscasts were little more than announcers reading press releases and police reports. In the 1930s and 40s, network newscasts evolved into audio versions of newspaper columns. During the World War Two and into the 1950s there was the arrival of the radio news anchor, who presented reporters on the scene, with commentary confined to the people actually making the news. You're hear this transition develop over decades of radio news coverage. David Leslie is an Inupiaq Sipiniq (Two-Spirit) living in Fairbanks. He is a frequent testifier against the anti-trans bills moving through the Alaska State House. We discuss his specific perspective as a queer Alaska Native man.To check out the book recommended by our guest, Yuuyaraq: The Way of The Human Being, by Harold Napoleon, Click here. This episode is part of a series on trans rights. The inspiration for these interviews is three bills currently moving through the Alaska State House: HB 183 which bans trans girls from playing girls sports; HB 105 which requires kids to get signed permission slips approving their preferred name and pronouns; and HB 338 which allows doctors to be sued up to 20 years after performing gender affirming procedures on trans youth.Alaska has many big problems. The pressing need to increase the funding of our public school system and finding a solution for an imminent energy crisis, for example. But instead of working on these very real, very substantial problems, we are spending the last weeks of session debating whether trans youth exist and have rights. They do exist; they do have rights.

Are you considering putting your business on the market but unsure about what to do? Are you concerned about how selling your business might affect customer relationships, your employees, and the brand itself? In this week's episode, we're thrilled to be speaking with David Leslie, Founder and Managing Director of Leslie James Acquisitions. In conversation with Boston Tullis' Sarah Myerscough, he grants listeners a deep dive into the M&A (mergers and acquisitions) insurance market, focusing on what makes vendor businesses attractive to acquirers, and the intricacies of the valuations process. If you're thinking about selling your business, listen now to find out how! Quote of the Episode “People are very important, particularly client-facing people within a business, because to disrupt those relationships between those people and the clients can have an adverse effect. Equally, brand is very important. Most acquirers recognised the importance of brand. Consequently, most acquirers will not seek to change the name and branding of an acquisition, certainly not for a good number of years.” While a business acquisition can superficially seem to be a somewhat cutthroat affair, in the episode, David Leslie demystifies this notion, by emphasising that acquirers ultimately do not wish to disrupt the relationships between vendor businesses and their customers. He emphasises that in gearing up to a sale, vendors should have succession management in place, so that following the acquisition, the new owners will enable the business to continue operating smoothly. Furthermore, due to the importance of your business' brand to the sale, it must be clear to the acquirer that this reputation, and the core values underpinning it, will remain unchanged through the transition of ownership. In a previous podcast, linked below, Tim Johnson emphasised that the community element of vendors is crucial to their valuation. Key Takeaways Acquirers are not seeking to fundamentally uproot the businesses they purchase, but to capitalise on the reputation that they have already established through the quality of their brand and their people. While in some situations, the acquirer will insert its own people into the business, a concern for many vendors, David notes that this tends to be from an oversight standpoint. The brand value of a vendor may seem difficult to quantify. David notes that it is measured by its overall image, the impression of its professionalism, how well-known it is for quality customer service, will all increase the appetite of an acquirer. Therefore, you'd like to sell either soon or further down the line, building up your brand should be a priority. Ultimately, when valuing a vendor, the first thing on the acquirer's mind is a business' EBIT DA and its income multiples. A lot of false figures have been thrown around regarding this topic. For a predominantly commercial broking business, David suggests that an acquirer is generally looking at income multiples between roughly two and two and a half times. However, David has seen businesses sold for less than those multiples, and others that have been sold for more. Fundamentally a valuation boils down to acquirer appetite. The more interest a business has, the more it will sell for, in spite of EBIT DA. To get sufficient interest, its EBIT DA and income multiples will likely be very good, but there are other variables at stake – its brand and people. As such, David asserts that the reputation of a vendor is crucial, perhaps even above all else. Best Moments/Key Quotes “The value of the brand inherently relates to its image, its quality, its professionalism, all of these sorts of things. And the more well-known the brand is for quality, [good] customer service, and so on, the appetite of an acquirer will increase. And inevitably, increased appetite would lead to an increase in valuation.” ‘[As an acquirer], you are generally, for a predominantly commercial broking business, looking at income multiples somewhere between roughly two and two-and-a-half times.' ‘It's very much a seller's market, but it's down to acquirers' appetite.' “For vendors, there are two types of sales essentially, one is a share purchase, or shared sale, where the company and its shares are being bought. So, the shareholders are selling their shares to the acquirer. The other is an asset often referred to as a book sale, where the vendor is essentially selling their book of business, possibly also, the premises, leasehold or freehold plus their staff.” Resources The Insurance Broker Podcast – Mergers and Acquisitions with Tim Johnson Leslie James Acquisitions - https://lesliejamesacquisitions.com/ About the Guest David Leslie is the Founder and Managing Director of Leslie James Acquisitions, an M&A mergers and acquisitions business operating solely within the insurance sector. When you listen to a radio programme, watch an animated film, or even receive a phone call, it's unlikely you'll question whether the words you're hearing are coming from the mouth of a human being. But all that could be about to change thanks to the rise of ‘voice cloning'. Elaine Moore is a tech columnist at the Financial Times and she's interested in the ramifications of this new technology. Thanks to artificial intelligence, cloning a human voice can be achieved with just a few minutes of recorded audio. As the technology becomes more sophisticated and its use more widespread, how will this affect our society, our politics and our personal interactions? And is it time we were able to control what happens to our own voice both now and when we die? With contributions from: Carlton Daniel, lawyer at Squire Patton Boggs. Tom Lee, co-founder of LOVO. As investors go ‘back to the drawing board' amidst a changeable market outlook for 2021, private equity is an asset class to access now due to its bias for long duration assets with attractive growth profiles. As structural tailwinds for technology continue to accelerate, there is a dearth of listed options for Australian investors to hold; in contrast, private equity offers exposure to businesses with quality recurring revenues at discounts to listed peers. Often underrepresented in investor portfolios due to concerns around liquidity, private equity investing with a truly hands-on approach allows active investors to maximise their capital growth potential. - David Leslie, Ellerston Capital. The Rothko Chapel's biennial Óscar Romero Award has been given every two years since 1986 in recognition of courageous, grassroots human rights advocacy. The award is named in honor of Archbishop Óscar Romero of San Salvador who was assassinated on March 24, 1980, because of his vocal opposition to the violent oppression of his fellow citizens. Building upon climate change topics addressed at our 2019 Spring Symposium: “Toward a Better Future: Transforming the Climate Crisis,” the Chapel honors three recipients who are committed to climate justice, and together represent the Chapel's intersection of art, spirituality and human rights. 2020 Awardees include: Gérman Chirinos, Founder of MASSVIDA (Honduras); Bernadette Demientieff, Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee (Alaska); and Jorge Díaz, Co-Founder of AgitArte (Puerto Rico). The virtual ceremony was led by David Leslie, Executive Director of the Rothko Chapel and an invocation was given by Myokei Caine-Barrett, Shonin, the Resident Priest of Myoken-ji Temple in Houston. This year's Nomination Committee included Cassandra Carmichael, Executive Director at the National Religious Partnership for the Environment; Guillermo Kerber, former Program Executive for Climate Justice at the World Council of Churches; Cara Mertes, Project Director for Moving Image Strategies at the Ford Foundation; Marianne Møllmann. Director of Regional Programs at the Fund for Global Human Rights; Bryan Parras, Healthy Communities Campaign Organizer at the Sierra Club; and Nato Thompson, Artistic Director at Philadelphia Contemporary. About the Awardees: Gérman Chirinos is a land and water rights activist from Honduras. Over the past 10 years, protected and publicly held lands in southern Honduras have been privatized, and large-scale energy projects and logging have limited access to water and land. Motivated by this growing environmental crisis, Gérman joined other activists in 2014 to found the Southern Environmental Movement for Life (Movimiento Ambientalista del Sur por la Vida) or MASSVIDA, an association of 37 communities in active resistance to the destruction of land and water. When asked what difference the award will make for MASSVIDA, Gérman said: “We will no longer be silenced, our work will become known.” Bernadette Demientieff is the Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee and she is Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich’in. Bernadette stands strong to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge-Coastal Plain, the Porcupine Caribou Herd and the Gwich’in way of life. Bernadette is a council member for the Arctic Refuge Defense Council. She also serves as an advisory board member for NDN Collective, the Care of Creations Task Force, Native Movement Alaska, and Defend the Sacred Alaska. She is a tribal member of the Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich’in Tribal Government, and on the leadership council for ITR. When asked about her years of advocacy, Bernadette said, "We must all remember that we are on a spiritual path and that co-existing and respecting each other’s ways of life is important." Jorge Díaz co-founded AgitArte in 1997 based in Santurce, PR and is an editor of the book When We Fight, We Win! He is a puppeteer, popular educator and bicultural organizer with over 25 years of experience. He is deeply committed to working class struggles against oppressive systems, namely colonialism, patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism. Jorge is also a founding member of Papel Machete, a collective of radical artists and street theater/puppetry workers dedicated to education, agitation and solidarity work in 21st century Puerto Rico and its Diaspora. Upon announcement of receiving the award, Jorge said, "I take this award as an opportunity to reaffirm my individual commitment to continue in the collective struggle for a life in which we can be free from violence." This program was underwritten by The Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation.

Have you ever come home from the supermarket to discover one of the apples you bought is rotten? It's likely your trust for that grocer was diminished, or you might stop buying that particular brand of apples altogether. In this episode, we discuss how the quality controls in a production line need to use smart sampling methods in order to avoid sending bad products to the customer, which could ruin the reputation of both the brand and seller. To do this we describe a thought experiment called Apple Tasting. This allows us to demonstrate the concepts of regret and reward in a sampling process, giving rise to the use of Contextual Bandit Algorithms. Contextual Bandits come from the field of Reinforcement Learning which is a form of Machine Learning where an agent performs an action and tries to maximise the cumulative reward from its environment over time. Standard bandit algorithms simply choose between a number of actions and measure the reward in order to determine the average reward of each action. But a Contextual Bandit also uses information from its environment to inform both the likely reward and regret of subsequent actions. This is particularly useful in personalised product recommendation engines where the bandit algorithm is given some contextual information about the user.Back to Apple Tasting and product quality control. The contextual bandit in this scenario, consumes a signal from a benign test that is indicative, but not conclusive, of there being a fault and then makes the decision to perform a more in-depth test or not. So the answer for when you should discard or test your product depends on the relative costs of making the right decision (reward) or wrong decision (regret) and how your experience of the environment affected these in the past.We speak with Prof. David Leslie about how this logic can be applied to any manufacturing pipeline where there is a downside risk of not quality checking the product but a cost in a false positive detection of a bad product.Other areas of application include:Anomalous behaviour in a jet engine e.g. low fuel efficiency, which could be nothing or could be serious, so it might be worth taking the plane in for repair.Changepoints in network data time series - does it mean there's a fault on the line or does it mean the next series of The Queen's Gambit has just been released? Should we send an engineer out? With interview guest David Leslie, Professor of Statistical Learning in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University.Further ReadingPublication list for Prof. David Leslie (http://bitly.ws/bQ4a via Lancaster University)Paper on "Selecting Multiple Web Adverts - a Contextual Multi-armed Bandit with State Uncertainty" in Journal of the ORS (http://bitly.ws/bQ3X via Lancaster University)Paper on "Apple tasting" (http://bitly.ws/bQeW via ScienceDirect)Paper by Google Inc. on "AutoML for Contextual Bandits" (https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.03212 via arXiv)Some links above may require payment or login. By his own admission he was a generic Christian. Church, Work and social get togethers repeated themselves weekly. God called him out of this pattern into an impossible Assignment! He was picked out of 17,000 applicants to be trained by Reinhard Bonnke at CFAN in 2008. The 2008 Global Financial Crash changed everything! He was persecuted. Lost millions of dollars from his businesses, was struggling to put food on the table for his young family. At the depth of his despair GOD intervened. Showed him 4 Words that radically restored and changed his life. These 4 words brought him influence and affluence to powerfully build Gods Kingdom around the world. He is now running multiple companies he uses to fund the Kingdom. He is a co-leader of a ministry that has touched over 60 million people and growing rapidly! He recently had a meeting at the Whitehouse in Washington, but gives ALL credit to Jesus LEARN HOW TO RENEW YOUR MIND IN THIS FREE TRAINING THAT WE WANT TO GIFT YOU: fusebornformore.com/gift

The Rothko Chapel, established in 1971 in Houston, is both a sacred space and a modern art mainstay. Dedicated to non-denominational prayer and private contemplation -- and also to international peace and fellowship -- the building routinely hosts lectures, concerts, interfaith gatherings, and similar events. And at its heart, of course, are fourteen very dark, luminous, large-scale paintings by the late Mark Rothko. We speak with David Leslie, the executive director of the Rothko Chapel.
