The episode kicks off with Mac, David and Lindsay discussing their own senses of fashion (or, lack thereof). They raise riveting questions including: does owning cufflinks make one fashionable? Lindsay recounts the way her style has not evolved—and looks back on her first day of Kindergarten, to which she wore a plum power suit. Guests Ashley Brooks and Donna Ricco join around 13:40. Ashley Brooks is the chair of the Fashion Department at Mount Mary University. Previously, she led design and art teams for children's, juniors and women's clothing at Kohl's, and worked at Saks Fifth Ave and the VF Corporation. Donna Ricco is an Executive Fellow at Mount Mary, she is also an alum of Mount Mary University, and started and led her own brand: Donna Ricco New York. During the conversation, they reflect on fashion design as both a creative and pragmatic enterprise, and an industry with many career paths. They speak about the origins of the MM Fashion Program, which began in the 1960's under the leadership of Sister Aloyse. Milwaukee's place in the fashion industry at that time was buoyed by a diversity of manufacturing outlets that were based in the region, and Milwaukee's history as a tanning center and fur trading outpost. The Milwaukee of today does not have the same diversity of manufacturing expertise needed to support a large-scale fashion industry—but the graduates of the program are eking out new niches through creative collaborations, as part of their participation in a wider artistic ecosystem. “Designers can't cut it on their own,” as Ricco says. Many fashion puns are woven into the conversation. Mount Mary will host the CREO Fashion Show: Prismatic Parallel, at 3pm and 7 pm in Notre Dame Hall on Saturday, May 14. Friends, in this episode we're keeping things real -- and we're keeping things local -- with the amazing Ashley Brooks. Ashley is an entrepreneur and hospitality designer, co-founder of nationally-acclaimed restaurant, Milktooth, and the co-founder Garfield Farmers Market (where I personally do most of my grocery shopping during the summer). That's just a portion of her professional bio, by the way. As you can see, Ashley wears many hats -- but all of her projects center around her passion for connecting with people through food. She is a passionate advocate for local food and a strong, sustainable food system. And today she's going to help us understand how and why to incorporate local foods into our lives. In addition to sharing her own entrepreneurial journey, as well as how she evolved from a diet based on convenience to a diet based on locally and sustainably sourced foods, Ashley also unpacks: What defines local food vs. healthy food vs. “slow food” Why supporting local food creates a more sustainable food and agriculture system Why local, seasonal food tastes better! What “slow food” is -- and why local doesn't necessarily mean healthy or sustainable How to navigate your local market and ask where/how your produce is grown If you're in Indy, join Ashley and I at the Garfield Park Farmers Market next summer! In the meantime, you can follow Ashley on Instagram at @a.rose.brooks. Wherever you live, get to know your local slow food community at www.slowfoodusa.org! Don't forget to get to grab your free local food worksheet, specifically designed to help you eat and shop local. Like the show? Please leave us a review here -- even one sentence helps. We’ve all done it: said we had no time to get everything done, let alone do something creative. Sometimes, that’s true. And other times, we need to take a look at how we are actually spending those little moments throughout the day and ask ourselves if not having enough time is the issue, or if we are maybe just wasting a little more than we think. Chasing the Supernatural- Haunt ME is a web series focusing on haunted or supposedly haunted Maine locations. Our team goes in to learn about the history of the place and then investigates to see if there is any validity to the claims. We use a variety of equipment and techniques to make this determination, and each one of our members has a specific style or job so we are sure that we can cover all bases. Our show is very much like a TV show in that we have episodes that will air each week after our premiere date, but this release will occur online. We are very excited to be a part of the online web series community, which is an exciting new way to experience programs. We have four investigators who appear in our episodes. They each have a specific job title and you will see them working on related tasks throughout each episode. They are Ashley Brooks (group leader), Carol Cleveland (manesologist), Ty Gowen (audio analyst/location scout), and Katie Webb (occultist). We have a dedicated crew that works diligently to make our episodes and adventures possible. The tech team includes the talents of Nick Nordfors, Mike Strout, Krista Bertalan, Erin Cross, Johnny Speckman, Anna Halloran, and Charlie Widdis.
