For the most part, the star cluster NGC 2281 has escaped the attention of astronomers. It hasn’t been studied in a lot of depth over the years. So many of its details haven’t really been locked down. So far, astronomers have cataloged more than 200 stars in the cluster. And they’ve ruled out many more stars that happen to line up in the same direction. That makes NGC 2281 a fairly puny cluster. The cluster’s distance is a bit uncertain as well. Measurements have been getting better in recent years, thanks in part to the Gaia space telescope. It’s obtained precise details on several of the stars in the cluster, including their distance. Those observations put NGC 2281 at more than 1700 light-years. And its age is still debated, too. Estimates in recent years have ranged from about 275 million to 630 million years. Various studies have used different techniques to plot the age. That includes the types of stars found in the cluster, the number of dead stars, and even how fast the Sun-like stars in the cluster spin; stars slow down as they age. NGC 2281 is in Auriga the charioteer, in the west-northwest as night falls. The “twins” of Gemini stand to its upper left, with the brilliant star Capella farther to its lower right. Under clear, dark skies, it’s visible to the unaided eye as a hazy patch of light – a star cluster that we’re still getting to know. Script by Damond Benningfield
When I decided to write about goats in folklore, I thought I would find plenty of content. After all, they appear in mythology. Look at Amalthea, the goat reputed to have raised Zeus in Greek myth. Or the goats associated with the goatherd in the Auriga constellation. That's before we get anywhere near the sign of Capricorn. Yet in terms of actual folklore, there's less than you would expect. Unlike pigs, there are few specific tales about goats. Instead, they pop up almost as a side character in relation to other animals. That said, they do have associations with fairies, and of course, we can't talk about goats without addressing the devil-shaped elephant in the room. So let's see what folklore we can find about the humble goat in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! The constellation Auriga is high in the eastern sky as night falls. It’s usually drawn as a pentagon. The brilliant star Capella is at the top left corner, with fainter Elnath – a star that’s shared with Taurus – at the lower right. A trail of three prominent star clusters winds through the pentagon – Messier 36, 37, and 38. M36 and 38 are inside the pentagon. M37 is just below it. All three are easy targets for binoculars. M37 is about 4500 light-years away. And it’s the largest of the trio of clusters. It spans a few dozen light-years. Astronomers have cataloged more than 500 member stars, but the total population could be much higher. The cluster includes more than 50 dead stars known as white dwarfs. The details of such stars help reveal the cluster’s age – roughly 400 million to 550 million years. And that’s a long time for a star cluster to hang together. M37 has orbited the center of the Milky Way Galaxy at least twice. As it orbits, the gravitational fingers of other stars and gas clouds pull away some of the stars on the fringes of the cluster. So far, Messier 37 appears to be maintaining a firm grip on most of its stars. But that won’t last forever. More stars will be pulled away on each trip through the galaxy – whittling down this tight family of stars. Script by Damond Benningfield

Capella is a big mismatch. It’s a system of four stars, divided into two widely separated pairs. The members of one pair are both about two and a half times the mass of the Sun. But the members of the other pair are only about half the Sun’s mass. As a result, the two pairs face quite different futures. Capella is the brightest star of Auriga, the charioteer, and the sixth-brightest star in the entire night sky. It climbs into good view in the northeast in early evening and soars high overhead during the night. The system appears to be about 600 million years old – four billion years younger than the Sun. Yet the stars in the heavier pair are both at the end of life. They’ve burned through the original hydrogen fuel in their cores. That’s made them puff up to giant proportions. Before long, both stars will shed their outer layers. The stars are close enough together that the expelled gas should act like a brake, causing the stars to spiral close together. But as the gas disperses, the stars will be much lighter. That will loosen their grip on each other, causing them to move farther apart. So no one is quite sure what the system’s final configuration will look like. The smaller stars, on the other hand, will remain in the prime phase of life for tens of billions of years longer. But as the heavier stars trim down, the two pairs are likely to drift apart – splitting up a stellar quartet. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Moon barges through a region that’s packed with bright points of light the next couple of nights. All of them will lose a bit of their luster in the glare of the moonlight, but they’ll still form a beautiful ensemble. They’re all in good view by about 10 or 10:30, forming an arc around the Moon. The pinpoint that’s closest to the Moon is the star Aldebaran. It represents the eye of Taurus, the bull. If you hold out your fist at arm’s length, it will neatly span the distance between the Moon and Aldebaran – about 10 degrees. The brightest member of the group is the planet Jupiter. It looks like a brilliant star – the brightest object in the sky at that hour other than the Moon. It’s about 17 degrees to the lower left of the Moon. Elnath, the star at the tip of one of the bull’s horns, is about the same distance from the Moon, to the upper left of Jupiter. It’s the faintest member of the group, but still pretty easy to see. The Moon will huddle especially close to Elnath tomorrow night. Finally, the point that’s farthest from the Moon is Capella, the brightest star of Auriga, the charioteer. It’s to the left of the Moon by about 25 degrees. That’s two and a half times the width of your fist. The star is quite bright, so you won’t have any trouble picking it out – a member of a quartet of bright pinpoints near the gibbous Moon. We’ll have more about this beautiful lineup tomorrow. Mark Aldred, Vice President, Sales International, Auriga – the banking evolutionBanks need to invest to innovate and meet users' needs. Recent service outages have also shown that banks must act to improve the resilience of their infrastructure in terms of both hardware and software. Further, legacy institutions in the UK appear to be rethinking their branch closure programmes, potentially opting instead to make the branch experience one of the building blocks of an omnichannel service offering. Where next for the banks – the topic of this discussion between Robin Amlôt of IBS Intelligence and Mark Aldred, Vice President, Sales International at Auriga.

On modern maps of the universe, every star belongs to a single constellation. But in ages past, some stars were known as connecting stars – they belonged to two constellations. And one of those stars is close to the Moon early tomorrow. The star is Elnath. Its name means “the butting one” – a reference to its position at the tip of one of the horns of Taurus, the bull. In fact, a second name for the star is Beta Tauri – an indication that it’s the second-brightest star in the constellation. But until almost a century ago, Elnath was also known as Gamma Aurigae. That name indicated that it was one of the brighter stars of Auriga the charioteer. And in many older star atlases, it’s depicted as part of the charioteer’s outline. Until the early 20th century, there were no rules about where a star might belong – it could be a member of more than one constellation with no problem. In the 1920s, though, the International Astronomical Union tidied up the geography of the heavens. It designated 88 official constellations. And it defined precise boundaries for each one. So every star was given its own home in the cosmos – including Elnath, the horn of the bull. Elnath stands close to the Moon at dawn. Three other bright lights form a triangle to the upper right of the Moon: Mars, at the top of the triangle; brilliant Jupiter, at the lower left; and Aldebaran, the bull’s eye, at the lower right. Astronomers use many techniques to find planets in other star systems. One of those is looking where there doesn't appear to be anything — wide gaps in disks of dust around young stars. Most of these stars are only a few million years old — billions of years younger than the Sun. They're encircled by cold dust — raw materials for making planets. The disks are easy targets for ALMA — an array of telescopes in Chile that studies a form of radio waves. It sees the disks in good detail. And most of the disks have wide gaps — zones with very little dust. Such regions could have been cleared out by the gravity of orbiting planets. So astronomers are trying to find those planets. One system where they've been successful is A-b Aurigae. It's more than 500 light-years away, in Auriga, the charioteer. The constellation is high overhead at nightfall, although the star is too faint to see without a telescope. The star is bigger and heavier than the Sun. But it's an infant — it's not yet fully formed. It's encircled by a giant disk. And observations have revealed a likely planet in a gap in the disk. The planet is bigger and heavier than Jupiter, the giant of our own solar system. It's so far out that it takes hundreds of years to orbit the star. But that helped make it a little easier to spot. In fact, astronomers found it by taking its picture — a planet discovered lurking in a dark zone around an infant star. Script by Damond Benningfield
Astronomers have been studying the star cluster Messier 36 for almost four centuries. Yet they still aren’t sure about its details. There’s disagreement about its distance, its age, and the number of stars it contains.M36 is in Auriga the charioteer. The constellation is high in the eastern sky this evening. Its brightest star is Capella, one of the brighter stars in the night sky. M36 is one of four clusters to the lower right of Capella that are visible through binoculars.Estimates of the cluster’s distance vary by hundreds of light-years, with an average of about 4,000. Star counts place its population at up to 200 stars. And estimates of its age range from about 15 million to 30 million years. One recent study favored the lower age. In fact, it found several stars that are no more than 200 thousand years old. That suggests that even more stars could be born there in the future. As with many other details, though, there’s some uncertainty — it’s not confirmed that the infant stars are part of M36. They’re inside a small cloud of cold, dark gas and dust. It’s on the cluster’s edge. So it could be part of M36, or it could be a separate structure that happens to be close by.So it’s going to take more studies — and more years — to lock down the details of Messier 36.Tomorrow: synchronizing a close pair of stars. Giants flank the Moon tonight. They're among the brightest stars in the night sky, so you can't miss them, even from a light-polluted city. As night falls, look to the lower right of the Moon for Aldebaran, the eye of Taurus, the bull. Then look about twice that far to the upper left of the Moon for Capella. It's the brightest star of Auriga, the charioteer, and the sixth-brightest star in all the night sky. Aldebaran is a single giant. It's more than 40 times the diameter of the Sun. It's also a bit more massive than the Sun. It's 65 light-years away. Capella includes two giants. The system is closer than Aldebaran, at just 43 light-years. Both of the giants are about two-and-a-half times the mass of the Sun, and roughly 10 times the Sun's diameter. A star becomes a giant when it uses up the original hydrogen fuel in its core. The core shrinks and gets hotter, starting a new round of nuclear reactions. The hotter core pushes outward on the star's outer layers. That causes the star to puff up to many times its original size, making it much brighter. Aldebaran, for example, is more than 400 times the Sun's total brightness, while each of Capella's giants is about 75 times the Sun's brightness. Eventually, each star will cast its outer layers into space, leaving only its small, hot core. The Sun faces the same fate — beginning in several billion years. More about the future of the Sun tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Families of stars almost always break up. Usually, members drift away gradually. Sometimes, though, some of them run away from the family group in a big hurry. An example is Mu Columbae. It's in the constellation Columba, the dove, which is low in the south as night falls. The star is about 1300 light-years away. But it's so brilliant that, under dark skies, it's visible to the eye alone — but just barely. Mu Columbae is one of the more impressive stars in our part of the galaxy. It's about 16 times the mass of the Sun, and perhaps 45,000 times brighter. And it's moving at about 260,000 miles per hour relative to the Sun. That's far zippier than all but a handful of other stars. Astronomers have discovered that Mu Columbae is moving in exactly the opposite direction from another runaway star, in Auriga the charioteer. Tracing their paths backward shows that they converge at a pair of massive stars in Orion. The leading idea says the runaways began their high-speed journeys about 2.6 million years ago. Two pairs of massive stars passed quite close to each other. They staged a fast, violent gravitational dance. The heaviest members of the two pairs changed partners, forming a new binary. The less-massive members of the original systems were kicked out. So instead of run-aways, the stars are actually kick-aways — stars kicked out of the family by their weightier siblings. For fans of geometric shapes, the night sky is a paradise. You can connect the bright stars to make just about any shape you can think of: triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and many more. One of the biggest and brightest of these figures is the Winter Circle or Hexagon — seven bright stars, with one more as its hub. It's in the east and southeast as night falls now. Its hub is Betelgeuse, the orange shoulder of Orion. It's about halfway up the sky at nightfall, in the east-southeast. To see the circle, drop the lower right of Betelgeuse until you come to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. It's in the big dog, so it's also known as the Dog Star. Using Betelgeuse as the center of your clock, sweep clockwise to Procyon. It is the brightest star of the little dog, so it's known as the Little Dog Star. Next up, in the east, are Pollux and Castor, the twins of Gemini. Capella, in Auriga the charioteer, is high above them. Then go to the right for Aldebaran, the eye of the bull. Right now, the planet Mars is close by, so it adds one more point to the circle. Then it's down to Rigel, Orion's bright blue-white foot, and back to Sirius to complete the shape. This is a good time to view this giant figure. The glare of the gibbous Moon overpowers most of the stars, but the bright lights of the Winter Circle shine through — a beautiful bit of celestial geometry for winter nights. We're back on the Auriga this time, to discuss the one sensible member of the Betty's crew, who just doesn't work. Vriess.

Maintenance therapy over the past several years has commonly included the use of Revlimid (lenalidomide) over a long period of time. Is more better? Does more maintenance therapy or certain combinations help extend remissions or help patients deepen their responses? Ashraf Badros, MD, of the University of Maryland will join the HealthTree Podcast for Multiple Myeloma to talk with us about the rationale behind the AURIGA clinical trial using daratumumab and lenalidomide following stem cell transplant for patients who are still MRD positive. Myeloma experts are working to identify more personalized approaches for each type of myeloma patient. We know that patients who are still MRD positive following high dose therapy are more likely to have shorter remissions and the use of a different maintenance therapy may help patients who aren't getting their deepest responses do better over time. What gets to count as work for queer and trans people? This is a question illustrator and comic artist Syan Rose's remarkable collection, Our Work is Everywhere: An Illustrated Oral History of Queer and Trans Resistance, explores through illustrations of her interviews with activists. Published this year, Rose provides an energetic source of connection and community. On our Queer Devotions podcast, we got a chance to ask Rose about the process of interviewing and illustrating so many activists across the country. Some highlights include: "Queer Muslim Family" with Mirna Haidar, “Everything You Love About New Orleans is Because of Black People,” a conversation with Phlegm, "Our Brown Divinity" with Dusty Lamay and “Auriga” with Jaye Sablan. This work also comes with naming Black, Indigenous and people of colour as originators of queer cultures, joy, community care, healing, and so much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/queerdevotions/message
