Mars is dry, cold, and quiet. But that hasn’t always been the case. Billions of years ago it was much busier – and perhaps a comfortable home for life. Mars has had three major geological ages. The oldest was the Noachian. It’s named for a large highlands region in the southern hemisphere. It began about 4.1 billion years ago, and lasted for 400 million years. The solar system was still packed with big “leftovers” from the birth of the planets then. Many of them slammed into Mars, forming wide basins that are still visible today. At the same time, giant volcanoes belched gases into the atmosphere. That trapped heat, making Mars much warmer. Clouds might have produced rain or snow. The precipitation carved rivers and filled lakes and maybe even a large ocean. Conditions could have allowed the formation of microscopic life. At the end of that period, there were fewer impacts and less volcanic activity. Mars cooled off, and the water dried up. So Mars became quieter as the Noachian Age ended, and the next age began. Mars is close to the right or upper right of the Moon early this evening. It looks like a fairly bright star. But it’s quite low in the sky, especially as seen from the northern half of the country, so you need a clear horizon to spot it. The star Spica, which is about twice as bright as Mars, stands to the upper left of the Moon. We’ll have more about Spica tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
In Episode 134, astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield dive into the cosmic blueprint of one of heavy metal music's most iconic couples: Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. Ozzy's chart reveals a bold Sagittarius Sun and a no-nonsense Sagittarius Mercury, while a Capricorn stellium opposed by Uranus perfectly explains why he became the poster child for heavy metal—blending discipline with rebellion. His Scorpio Venus only deepened his craving for intensity. Sharon's chart, on the other hand, features a Libra stellium, highlighting her natural gifts for partnership and negotiation. Yet, a challenging Saturn-Sun conjunction shows her path hasn't been easy, and with Uranus squaring her stellium, chaos and controversy were never far away. A Moon-Mars opposition further reveals her fiery, emotionally charged temper. Together, their charts tell a compelling story: their Suns form a harmonious sextile, aligning their love for social engagements and adventure, while a Venus conjunction in Scorpio points to a deep, intuitive understanding of passion and commitment. However, a Saturn-Moon square creates clashing perspectives on stability, and Uranus-Moon contacts ensure their home life was anything but predictable. Add a tense Mars-Uranus opposition, and it's clear volatility and explosive moments were part of their journey. Tune in to hear the Venus score we give this 41-year saga—and rest in power to the Prince of Darkness. Book a Reading with us! Our program with guest Jim Muncy covered NASA's current leadership situation and workforce challenges, including discussions about temporary administrators, potential job losses, and changes in federal government staffing policies. The conversation explored NASA's budget situation and space exploration priorities, with particular focus on the Appropriation Bill for Commerce, Justice, and Science, as well as the challenges posed by political divisions in Congress. Also discussed was the aging NASA workforce, modernization of engineering, and the need for younger innovative engineering and science. The discussion concluded with an examination of the commercial space industry's evolution and NASA's transition to new approaches for space exploration, emphasizing the need for effective leadership communication and bipartisanship in space policy.Jim Muncy discussed NASA's current leadership situation, explaining that NASA has had a temporary administrator since January and that Jarod Isaacman was nominated but not yet confirmed as administrator. He highlighted Jackie Jester's role as an excellent leader in legislative affairs and deputy chief of staff, noting her previous experience with Relativity and the Senate Commerce Committee. Jim also mentioned that NASA is currently dealing with uncertainty around 2,100 potential job losses, though he did not elaborate on this point other than pointing out the aging workforce and why plus the need for innovative engineering and science to be competitive with the private sector.Jim did spend time discussing the proposed changes in federal government staffing under the current administration, noting a reduction in the overall number of employees. He explained the implementation of a deferred retirement program that allows employees to announce their resignation in March, work remotely until September, and then officially retire. Jim also mentioned the administration's requirement for federal employees to return to in-office work, which has been met with resistance from some employees who had become accustomed to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our guest highlighted these NASA workforce challenges, noting that many employees are eligible for retirement and the agency has traditionally attracted long-term workers. He emphasized the contrast between NASA's older, more static workforce and the younger, more diverse nature of commercial industry, explaining that the Trump administration has shifted away from specific diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, resulting in some staff reductions. He suggested that changes in program priorities and funding may lead to some employees leaving NASA, but he did not anticipate mass departures or the closure of NASA centers.Jim mentioned the leadership changes at NASA, noting that Secretary Duffy was appointed as the interim administrator to provide political direction, while Janet Petro previously served as the acting administrator focusing on executive orders. He predicted that a new associate administrator would soon be named to serve as a general manager and oversee the implementation of the President's and Secretary's directives into actual programs. Jim expressed optimism about the shift towards an economic focus for space exploration, suggesting that someone with expertise in public-private partnerships would be ideal for the associate administrator role. He also explained the current tension between the executive and legislative branches regarding budget allocation and implementation, emphasizing the administration's belief in the executive branch's authority to manage day-to-day operations without significant legislative interference.Concerning the budget and Congress, the Appropriation Bill for Commerce, Justice, and Science stood out noting that NASA funding was planned on being maintained at last year's levels despite initial concerns about a 24.3% cut. Muncy expressed approval of the administration's approach to space exploration, which integrates human spaceflight and robotic missions, allowing for common hardware and technology across missions. Our guest criticized JPL's lack of innovation in the Mars sample return project, suggesting alternative methods and emphasizing the need for a more integrated and cost-effective approach to space exploration.Jim continued focusing on the challenges NASA faces due to political divisions in Congress, predicting a likely continuing resolution instead of a normal appropriation process. He suggested that the administration might prioritize a 4th Artemis mission using SLS without the Exploration Upper Stage and utilize existing gateway elements in a restructured approach combining commercial LEO destinations. Muncy also mentioned the possibility of using a 5-meter Centaur upper stage to replace the interim boosters and proposed a compromise where one additional SLS flight could be funded alongside commercial and space science initiatives. He emphasized that under a continuing resolution, NASA may terminate programs not prioritized by the administration, and he expressed a preference for increased funding in planetary science, lunar exploration, and astrophysics.Jim emphasized the need to transition NASA's focus from an unsustainable to an affordable and sustainable architecture for human exploration, aiming to make the moon part of Earth's economy. He suggested reducing unnecessary fixed costs and increasing public-private partnerships, commercial activities, and research in areas like mining and life support systems. In addition, he highlighted the importance of lowering the cost of keeping people alive and productive in space, enabling more economic and scientific experiments. He proposed setting clear metrics, such as the number of people living and working in space, to measure NASA's success and drive down costs further. When I asked Jim the path forward in implementing what Jim wanted as a space program, he discussed the Space Frontier Foundation's mission to promote the idea of space as a frontier for humanity, emphasizing that it is a place with unique resources like unfiltered solar energy and microgravity. He contrasted this view with the government's approach, which he sees as a program focused on national security and economic benefits. Muncy did introduce a third perspective, viewing space as an industry, which he sees as a transitional stage between government-led programs and a fully developed space economy. We discussed the evolution of the commercial space industry, highlighting its growth and competition since 2005. Our guest noted the success of multiple U.S. launch companies and the shift from a government monopoly to a competitive market, expressing hope that the current administration would support this vibrant industry, comparing it to the real estate industry in New York. He also addressed the need for congressional approval and suggested explaining the vision to both Congress and their constituents. Jim did emphasize that the industry has come a long way since 2009-2010, when there was only one operational commercial launch provider.Nearing the close of the program and in the form of a brief summary, Jim discussed the evolution of the commercial crew program and NASA's transition to new approaches for space exploration, emphasizing the need for leadership to communicate these changes effectively to Congress and the public. He highlighted the importance of selecting a change-oriented NASA administrator and suggested that former administrator Jarod Isaacman could play a key role in advocating for these shifts. He expressed cautious optimism about the current administration's space policy, noting potential improvements in commercial partnerships and licensing reform, while acknowledging that progress may be slower than desired. Jim also touched on the need for bipartisanship in space policy and criticized the lack of constructive dialogue on NASA's budget, urging a more balanced discussion of its merits and flaws.Note that Jim received two detailed and lengthy listener phone calls, one from John Hunt and the other from Dr. Kothari We also we received several email listener questions and comments. Artemis, SLS, Orion were additional topics discussed as was the use of Falcon Heavy to get us to the Moon faster and cheaper.Special thanks to our sponsors:Northrup Grumman, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.comThe Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. The Moon and Mars are flirting with danger – they’re sneaking up on the Beehive star cluster, in the constellation Cancer. The cluster doesn’t have much of a “sting,” though – it’s about 600 light-years away. The Beehive contains about a thousand stars, which are maybe 700 million years old – fairly young in astronomical terms. That means the Beehive maintains a mixture of stars of different masses. Its heaviest stars have burned out, leaving only their dead cores. About two-thirds of the remaining stars are red dwarfs – cool, faint embers only a fraction of the mass of the Sun. About a third are similar to the Sun. And about two percent are heavier than the Sun. Because more-massive stars burn through their nuclear fuel more quickly, those stars will expire first. The cluster’s brightest star is Epsilon Cancri. Although it looks like a single point of light, instruments reveal that it consists of at least three stars. All three are more than twice as massive as the Sun, so they’re nearing the end of the prime phase of life. Soon, they’ll puff up to giant proportions. After that, they’ll blow away their outer layers, exposing their dead cores – and the Beehive will lose some of its luster. The Beehive is close to the lower left of the Moon at nightfall, and is an easy target for binoculars. Mars looks like an orange star below the Moon. It’ll slip past the cluster over the next couple of days. Script by Damond Benningfield

The FRAM2 Astronauts have returned safetly after their "work-week" long mission in polar orbit. One thing about these private missions is that they can happen so fast! They don't stay up in space as long as NASA missions these days (ISS) so it's a fresh & interesting take on human spaceflight. And that's the theme for this week: discussing our top 3 favorite experiements shared live, in-flight by the FRAM 2 Crew. It also blends perfectly with our thoughts on how these private missions differ from the classic "NASA" spaceflight mission, and the future missions to the Moon & Mars. So buckle up - and let's dive in! Let us know what you think about the mission! In episode 118 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield take on NBA's greatest 3-point shooter, Stephen Curry and his entrepreneurial wife, Ayesha Curry. The two first met as teenagers and remained friends until a romantic spark was lit and they decided to take their relationship to the next level, eventually marrying and having four children together. First, we look into Ayesha's chart and see a willful, self-motivating Aries Sun. This, combined with a square from Uranus produces someone who makes her own rules and loves to move at lightening speed. However, finding balance is importanat to her as well thanks to her Libra Moon. We also notice an intuitive stellium in Pisces which makes the art of sacrifice easy for her. Next we look at Stephen's chart, and see a proud champion thanks to his Leo Rising sign and his Sun in the athletic and adventurous Ninth House. He's always on the hunt for bigger and better accomplishments. We also see an Aquarius Moon, giving him an outsider quality that sets him apart from other players. However, he also has a challenging T-Square from Venus and Pluto causing tension and issues with power dynamics in relationships. Looking at their compatibility, they have a strong, romantic conjunction between his Sun and her Venus in Pisces, creating feelings of true love and compassion. We also see a promising Sun/Moon sextile, telling us they're partners in crime, but also supportive of each other. But a Saturn/Sun square along with Moon/Mars square definitely adds challenges to the marriage. Careers versus Love, Impatience versus Sensitivity and a heavy sense of responsibility might not make this relationship so easy. Listen in to hear what Venus score this long-standing couple receives! NASA's planetary exploration program is in trouble. The Mars Sample Return program is verging on cancellation, and the VIPER mission to the moon already has been. Both are critical precursors to human exploration of these places, as Dr. Jim Bell of Arizona State University will tell us. We need to know more about the surface of Mars--with direct, in-the-lab studies of Mars rocks--and we certainly need to understand where the volatiles--another name for water and other resources of value--are on the moon. And, if you're the US government, you'd like to do both before China does--which is likely not far off. Does it matter who achieves these things first? And specific to the US, what role might private companies and individuals play in the drama? Headlines: SpaceX's Crew-9 mission is set to launch two astronauts to the International Space Station on Saturday, September 28th, with the primary objective of bringing back the Starliner astronauts who have been on the station for an extended period. A Seattle-based company, Iradian Aerospace, has unveiled plans for a new reusable orbital spaceplane that will utilize a revolutionary two-mile-long sled launch system. Earth is set to temporarily capture a small asteroid, 2024 PT5, which will remain in close proximity to our planet from September 29th to November 25th, providing scientists with an opportunity to study a near-Earth asteroid up close as it performs a de-facto flyby. Main Topic - Discussion with Dr. Jim Bell: Jim Bell discusses his early fascination with space exploration, inspired by the Apollo missions and Carl Sagan's acclaimed 1980s series "Cosmos," which led him to pursue a career in planetary science. The decadal survey process is explained, highlighting how it helps align the scientific community's priorities with NASA's mission planning and funding decisions. The challenges faced by the Mars Sample Return mission are discussed, with Jim expressing optimism that NASA will find a way to overcome the current budgetary hurdles and complete this groundbreaking mission. The cancellation of the VIPER lunar rover mission is addressed, with the hosts and guest emphasizing the importance of this mission for future human exploration of the Moon and the need for more transparency in NASA's decision-making process. Jim shares his perspective on the increasing involvement of commercial space companies in planetary exploration, stressing the importance of developing sustainable business models to ensure the long-term viability of these ventures. The conversation touches on the balance between NASA's priorities, such as the Artemis program, and the funding allocated to robotic scientific missions, with Jim highlighting the need for better communication and collaboration between the human spaceflight and robotic exploration divisions of NASA. On modern maps of the universe, every star belongs to a single constellation. But in ages past, some stars were known as connecting stars – they belonged to two constellations. And one of those stars is close to the Moon early tomorrow. The star is Elnath. Its name means “the butting one” – a reference to its position at the tip of one of the horns of Taurus, the bull. In fact, a second name for the star is Beta Tauri – an indication that it’s the second-brightest star in the constellation. But until almost a century ago, Elnath was also known as Gamma Aurigae. That name indicated that it was one of the brighter stars of Auriga the charioteer. And in many older star atlases, it’s depicted as part of the charioteer’s outline. Until the early 20th century, there were no rules about where a star might belong – it could be a member of more than one constellation with no problem. In the 1920s, though, the International Astronomical Union tidied up the geography of the heavens. It designated 88 official constellations. And it defined precise boundaries for each one. So every star was given its own home in the cosmos – including Elnath, the horn of the bull. Elnath stands close to the Moon at dawn. Three other bright lights form a triangle to the upper right of the Moon: Mars, at the top of the triangle; brilliant Jupiter, at the lower left; and Aldebaran, the bull’s eye, at the lower right. Dr. James Kenyon, Director of NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OhioThe road to the Moon goes through Cleveland. With a budget of approximately $900 million, a staff of more than 3,200 civil servants, over 725 patents, and over 120 R&D 100 Awards, Glenn — under Dr. Kenyon's leadership and in accordance with NASA's mandates — is providing integral support to Artemis, NASA's mission to return us to the Moon, overseeing the service module that will propel the Orion Space Capsule out of Earth's orbit and around the Moon.Founded in 1941, Glenn Research Center has led NASA's electric propulsion development efforts and been integral in many of NASA's most famous missions transforming aviation and space exploration — from Mercury and Apollo to the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station; playing important roles in robotic exploration missions, including the Mars rovers and Cassini's mission to Saturn.Prior to becoming Glenn's director. Dr. Kenyon served as director of the Advanced Air Vehicles Program in the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, led advanced programs and technology at Pratt & Whitney, and worked for 17 years in the Department of Defense where he was responsible for strategic planning, policy guidance and management oversight of DoD aerospace science and technology programs. This conversation tapped into my latent childhood love and curiosity for exploring the great cosmos around spaceship Earth — Dr. Kenyon and I explore his passion for aerospace and path to NASA, the history and evolution of the Glenn Research Center, and its significant impact here in Cleveland, his reflections on leadership, decision making and talent, and ultimately what's on the horizon, for exploring the unknown in both air and space.-----LINKS:Connect with Dr. James Kenyon: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-kenyon-204174172NASA's Office of STEM Engagement: https://www.nasa.gov/glenn-stem/NASA's Internships: https://www.nasa.gov/learning-resources/internship-programs/Doing Business with NASA Glenn: https://www.nasa.gov/glenn-business-and-partnerships/NASA Glenn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nasaglenn/NASA Glenn's X: https://twitter.com/NASAglenn-----SPONSORS: John Carroll University Boler College of Business || Impact Architects & NinetyJohn Carroll University Boler College of Business: https://business.jcu.edu/ As we've heard time and time again from entrepreneurs on Lay of The Land — many of whom are proud alumni of John Carroll University — success in this ever-changing world of business requires a dynamic and innovative mindset, deep understanding of emerging technology and systems, strong ethics, leadership prowess, acute business acumen… all qualities nurtured through the Boler College of Business! With 4 different MBA programs of study — spanning Professional, Online, Hybrid, and 1-Year-Flexible — The Boler College of Business provides flexible timelines and various class structures for each MBA Track — including online, in-person, hybrid and asynchronous — to offer the most effective options for you, in addition to the ability to participate in an elective International Study Tour, providing unparalleled opportunities to expand your global business knowledge by networking with local companies overseas and experiencing a new culture. The career impact of a Boler MBA is formative and will help prepare you for this future of business and get more out of your career. Astronomy Cast Ep. 707: What Goes Into A Sample Return Mission? Moon & Mars by Fraser Cain & Dr. Pamela Gay Streamed live on Feb 5, 2024. We've sent robots to other worlds, but the amount of science we can deploy to another planet can't compare with the vast science labs we have on Earth. That's why more and more missions are for a sample return, bringing pieces of alien worlds back to Earth, where we study them with proper equipment.
