Veterinary pain management specialists who focus on anesthesia and analgesia are always looking for…
Liz describes several encounters with a black leopard visiting the farmyard where she and her husband feed the farm cats. She has been watched and advanced on by the large cat and is now fully alert to its potential presence. On one occasion Liz noticed a small panther like cat dart out of cover to catch up with the big cat, and realised it was a cub rushing to its mother. Liz reports how the farm cats change behaviour due to the bigger cats' presence, and she explains how she and her husband adapt their life, living in anticipation of their new stealthy neighbours. This week on Organic Matters, we speak to organic farmer Gerry Deegan from Co. Westmeath. Previously an organic dairy farmer, Gerry changed his system to forestry and beef some years ago. During the transition, he became obsessed with manure and even had a custom-built machine made to turn farmyard manure into compost. He speaks about the importance of high-quality manure on a farm.

In these years of war and adventure - American Military Rations were invented. And they rested squarely on barrels of salted meat. Just like today much of the ration went to soldiers hanging out in forts or camps waiting for something to happen. But unlike today - another big chunk of rations went to just getting soldiers to where they were gonna fight.Marching soldiers to where they're going to do battle in today's modern army takes up much less of the food pile than it used to. No more 2 - 5 month crossings of the Atlantic. Now we know at least within a day when the troops will get somewhere. And dang if the maps aren't better and the rations lighter and much, much tastier. To hear all about the challenges of supplying your late 18th century and early 19th century army or adventure squad, come along for this LONG DELAYED episode.Sorry about that... and glad to be back!Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot com Threads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood

A Farmyard Christmas with Natasha BoomerIn this heartwarming episode of The Insomnia Project originally aired in 2019, Marco Timpano welcomes the delightful Natasha Boomer to share enchanting tales of "Christmas on the Farm." The holiday spirit is set aglow with mouth trumpet melodies, the scent of dead trees being ushered indoors, and the charm of tall ceilings creating a festive ambiance. The episode unfolds like a cherished storybook, with Natasha reminiscing about the importance of Crackers and Cheese on Christmas Eve, fondly recalling a time when "Pumpernickel was still pumpernickel." Animal Farm by George Orwell chapter 10, narrated by Isaac BirchallSupport the showhttps://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-essential-reads/subscribeYears pass. Many animals pass, and the few that remain can hardly remember the rebellion. The animals have finally completed a windmill but instead of being used for electricity, is used to mill corn, the more profitable of the two… The farm indeed has grown richer, but only the pigs and dogs have profited from the hard work. The animals have been convinced to keep their sense of Pride in Animals Farm. They say, “at least we work for ourselves, and not humans.” One day, while working in the fields, Squealer leads a group of sheep into one of the fields, and secretly teacher them a new chant, and after a few weeks, the animals finally hear it. Squealer, the other pigs, and eventually Napoleon are seen walking through the Farmyard on their hind legs. The animals stare confusedly and swear that on the barn wall “4 Legs Good, 2 Legs Bad” was written. Before the animals can protest however, the sheep chime in with their new chant “4 Legs Good, 2 Legs Better.”Clover calls Benjamin over, and asks him to read the writing on the barn wall where the 7 commandments were transcribed. Only the last commandment remained; The others had been painted over. The only commandment left read “All Animals are Equal, but Some Animals are More Equal than Others.” One day, the pigs invite some of the other farmers in the area to inspect Animal Farm. They walk around, and are shocked and pleased to see that the pigs are treating their “comrades” even worse that they treat their own animals. The men and pigs then retire to the house, and start to drink and play cards. The animals hear a huge ruckus and decide to sneak a glimpse of the game through the window. To their astonishment, the animals can no longer tell the pigs apart from the humans…Get SurfShark andprotect yourself online todayVPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389Get data brokers to stop sellingyour information with:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Episode 5/5 : Farmyard France and the Struggle for Water Episode 5 heads west to the Marais Poitevin, the second largest wetland in France nicknamed “Green Venice”, 200 kilometres north of Bordeaux, where farmers and environmentalists are at loggerheads over a plan to build 16 large water reserves. France has always been proud of its countryside. It has the largest rural population and agricultural industry within the European Union. But faced with the onset of global warming, farmers are facing a new battle for water. With temperatures rising, farmers are stuck with the age-old problem of feeding their crops in summer. But the solution appears to be coming at the expense of France's wonderful natural landscapes and biodiversity: it is an existential crisis for the agriculture sector that is not singular to the French. The farmers in the Marais Poitevin largely view the project positively as the reserves will provide water during the dry months of summer but environmentalists, and even certain other smallhold farmers, believe it will weaken the marsh and reduce the availability of water. The demonstrations are currently local but with plans to export the reserve idea to other parts of the country, these are likely to be just the first salvos in a nationwide battle. We travel to the Marais Poitevin to hear from farmers from both sides of the hedge as well as environmentalists and ecology researchers who also look ahead to a France that will need greater self-sufficiency following the Ukraine War. In our first episode of 2022, we pay a visit to one of the lesser-known killing fields of WW1. Covering just a few acres of arable land between Cambrai and St Quentin, the strong points of Gillemont Farm, The Knoll, and Quennett Copse, were the scene of some of the most brutal hand-to-hand fighting between the British and Germans anywhere on the Western Front. One veteran described the aftermath of a British attack on the farmyard, as looking like an abattoir, with the blood of the dead running like a river through the farmyard drainage system. We hear the moving stories of some of the men involved in the fighting. The remarkable eulogy of a Major in the Queens Own Oxfordshire Hussars provides a unique insight into a much-loved officer and allows us to discover the story behind "M" of James Bond fame. We meet the macintosh-wearing "Chocolate Soldier" and hear the tragic tale of a severely wounded officer of the Gloucestershire Regiment who managed one last act of defiance in the face of horrific injuries, to win himself a posthumous Victoria Cross. Davida Allen and William Robinson, two of Australia's leading painters, are not only both Archibald winners and Queenslanders but have been friends for over 40 years. Although they share their thoughts about the art world and their work, their painting styles and personalities are very different - which might be part of the secret to their long friendship. Davida's current show with Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane runs until 28 March 2020 and William Robinson will be showing with the Gallery later this year. This interview focuses on Davida's show and an in-depth interview with William Robinson will be posted closer to his exhibition. Bill is one of Australia’s most important internationally acclaimed painters so to obtain his insights into Davida’s work was a privilege. Apart from winning the Archibald, Davida is also a four time finalist in the prize and has had 3 major survey exhibitions of her work, most recently in 2018. She’s had over 20 solo shows and her work is held in nearly every major state gallery as well as the National Gallery of Australia and the MOMA in New York. She’s also a novelist and has written and directed an internationally acclaimed film. William Robinson is one of Australia's most significant painters. He has won the Archibald prize twice, the Wynne prize twice and his work is held in over 30 public collections across the world. He is the first Australian artist to have a gallery dedicated to his works – the William Robinson Gallery is located in historic Old Government House in Brisbane. We met in William Robinson’s magnificent studio at his home in Brisbane. To hear our conversation click on the play button beneath the above photo. 2018 Grass 10 champion John McNamara joins Emma-Louise Coffey to talk through his farming career and some of the people who have helped him along the way. John explains that the farm has been in the McNamara family for three generations and he considers the changes that have taken place over the last 20 years since he returned home farming. At that time the McNamaras were milking between 50-60 cows on a 25 ha platform. John and his wife Olive now milk 250 cows on a land base of 116 ha. John explains that expansion happened on the basis of the ability to grow grass as the main source of feed. The McNamaras won Farmyard of the Year in 2009, 40 years on from his father winning a similar competition that recognises farms general neatness and work organisation. John explains that his parents instilled a strong work ethic as well as pride of place in their farm as divers that saw them being recognised on both occasions. Johns community spirit is evident throughout his farming career being involved in Macra and with his local community, and in particular the GAA. He highlights the importance of work, life balance having an outlet away from the farm. John believes dairy farming is a socially and financially rewarding career and offers a great way of life for farmers and their families.
The Popinjays special with Wendy Robinson in conversation The band was formed by Wendy Robinson (vocals) and Polly Hancock (vocals, guitar), initially with a drum machine. This line-up recorded the debut "Don't Go Back" EP on Big Cat UK (catalogue number BBA02) in August 1988) achieving "Single of the Week" in Melody Maker. A John Peel session, produced by Dale Griffin and recorded at the BBC studios in Golders Green, London, was first broadcast on 21 September 1988 and repeated on 11 October 1988. It featured four original songs; "Perfect Dream Home", "Fine Lines", "Dr Fell" and "Backward" Daydream. They then recruited Dana Baldinger (b. Seattle, WA), and signed to One Little Indian Records, releasing "Please Let Me Go" as a single in April 1990; this too attained Single of The Week in Melody Maker. Baldinger was eventually replaced by Anne Rogers of The Crowd Scene. In December 1989, the British music magazine NME reported that the Popinjays, along with others such as Power of Dreams, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Charlatans, were their pick as 'stars of tomorrow'. Their debut album Bang Up To Date With The Popinjays was released in April 1990 and was followed by a live tour in May and June 1990 with One Little Indian label mates Kitchens of Distinction. In the autumn of 1990 Seamus Feeney joined the line up on drums making the band a four-piece for the first time. The band continued with live shows through the autumn, touring with both Cud and The Heart Throbs. The next single Vote Elvis was produced by Jessica Corcoran at The Greenhouse studios in London. In 1991 The Popinjays signed to US Independent label Alpha International and the single Vote Elvis was released in the United States in April 1991 entering the billboard Modern Rock charts the following month peaking at number 17 in June 1991. In August 1991 the band played at the Reading Festival UK and in December of that year the second album Flying Down to Mono Valley was recorded at The Farmyard with Ian Broudie producing. On 11 May 1992 the single Monster Mouth was released by One Little Indian records and a UK tour to support the release of the album Flying Down to Mono Valley followed from August through to October 1992. In 1992 the rhythm section was replaced by two brothers and former members of the band Airhead, namely bassist Ben Kesteven and drummer Sam Kesteven. In 1994 the third and final album Tales from the Urban Prairie was recorded and released, again on One Little Indian Records. a BBC Radio live session with Mark Radcliffe was broadcast on 1 June 1994. After a 21-year hiatus, in April 2015 The Popinjays original line up of Wendy Robinson and Polly Hancock played their first live show in 21 years at The Lexington, London on April 4, 2015, and again at Indie Daze at The Forum London on October 3, 2015.

Courtney Banach has been spending time around Shelburne Farms for almost her whole life. About to enter her junior year of high school, her love of farming began when visiting the Farmyard in Shelburne, Vermont when she was very young and subsequently attending their summer camps. Her first summer camp experience led her to volunteering on the farm, when she became a Steward in Training (SIT for short) for both the animal side and the educational side of the farm. Courtney later became a weekly volunteer helping with chores on Saturdays and school vacations. Her volunteer work led her to joining the Farm’s 4-H club which in turn led her to a paid farm job. Working on a farm has become her life; she loves the work and how rewarding it feels, and she plans to pursue an agricultural field in college. Today’s show has been brought to you by Hearst Ranch. “If farming is something you’re interested in, you should definitely explore all of your options…It’s all about exploring and finding out what you want, and sticking with it even if it gets rough.” — Courtney Banach on Greenhorn Radio
