Just in time for a holiday focused on food, we're proud to publish a special episode featuring a nonprofit that seeks to ensure that all members of our community have enough: the Anne Arundel County Food Bank (AACFB). We sat down with Leah Paley, CEO of the 37-year-old organization, to discuss: The many ways that AACFB works to alleviate food insecurity in Anne Arundel County, where 8.1% of residents (47,000+ people) don't know where their next meal is coming from - and over half of these individuals don't qualify for federal assistance. The many similarities between running the non-profit and running a business, from managing funds to maintaining a facility, and the many ways that its work benefits our local economy - including partnering with and purchasing from local farmers. Some of AACFB's newest initiatives - including a diaper program that supports 1,000 babies per month, a Backpack Buddies program that provides 14,000 AACPS students with out-of-school meals, and a brand new Maryland Department of Agriculture-funded mobile food pantry that distributes food all over Anne Arundel County, from Lothian to Brooklyn Park. The many ways that individuals and businesses can support AACFB, from donating food and time and money to hosting and attending food drives and charitable events, and why it's important to do so during the holiday season AND throughout the year. PLUS the episode includes the very special presentation of a $1,000 “golf check” from our Arundel Grown event, in honor of longtime Arundel Ag Director Lisa Barge, AND a very sincere promise that AAEDC looks forward to keeping on December 8. So tune in for an episode that's sure to make you thankful for what you have - and just might also inspire you to give!

Meet Lindsie: I'm passionate about a few things: My family (my husband and I have two young sons named Dante and Enzo) My community (I love being part of a real Vancouver neighbourhood) Travel (I even wrote a book about Traveling with Kids) Writing (Check out my latest article for REW.ca here) Wine (no need to explain!) People (my friends and my clients, who often become friends) Real Estate Being outdoors (especially hiking, SUP and biking) But I'm even more passionate about helping my clients find the home that is right for them. I specialize in helping families who have outgrown their current home, usually with the arrival of a wee one. Who knew someone so small could take up so much space? With the arrival of a baby, you start to think about things that you hadn't before. I love guiding clients through the process of finding the neighbourhood that they want to raise their children in. I also love helping first time home buyers through the excitement and nervousness of buying their first property. It doesn't have to be scary! WHERE I LIVE Before we had kids, my husband and I lived in a condo in Kits, which we adored. After our first son was born, our one bedroom and den condo suddenly became too small (sound familiar?!) so we bought a house near Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. If you live in the area and have kids, you've probably seen me around the playground, the ice rink or Community Centre at Trout Lake. If you live in the area and don't have kids, you've probably seen me shopping at Donald's Market, running around Trout Lake, sipping a coffee at The Prado cafe or enjoying a chocolate chip zucchini muffin at JJ Bean. WHICH NEIGHBORHOODS DO I SPECIALIZE IN? I work in all areas of Vancouver (including outside of Vancouver proper like North Van, Burnaby and Port Moody). I specialize in East Van because it's my 'hood and I know the schools, parks, restaurants, community centres and ammenities like the back of my hand. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A portion of every one of my sales go to the Children's Miracle Network as well as Backpack Buddies. The children's hospitals supported by the Children's Miracle Network provide comfort, treatment and hope to millions of sick kids each year. In Vancouver, our donations go directly to the BC Children's Hospital and last year, our RE/MAX office raised more than $24,105. Backpack Buddies is a unique program that addresses a very real need in Vancouver that most of us don't think about. There are many kids that attend inner city schools that rely on lunch programs throughout the school week. When the weekend rolls around, many of these kids will remain hungry until they return to school on Monday. Backpack Buddies provides a backpack filled with food for these kids to take home, because hunger doesn't take the weekend off. In 2002, I was a part of Joints in Motion, raising over $4,000 for the Arthritis Society of Canada and running my first marathon in Honolulu. In 2003 & 2005, I joined Team in Training, raising over $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. I also volunteer every year with the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and the Vancouver International Wine Festival (formerly the Playhouse International Wine Festival). I love heritage houses and wine! In this special installment of Stories from the 116, Greg talks with FUMC Director or Community Ministries & Mission, Dan Philips, about things we can do to help others whose personal struggles are not slowed down by the pandemic. Learn how our Loaves & Fish program has adapted to feed the needy around us, how Backpack Buddies is striving to continue to put meals in the hands of hungry young students, and what you can do to help. We may be social distancing, but the need around us is still close at hand.

Wright State University Newsroom

On Aug. 14, 16 Wright State students, including 12 freshmen, traveled south to Hampton, Tennessee, for a week to take part in the Freshmen Outdoor Orientation Trip (FOOT). FOOT is a unique wilderness experience that is led by trained upperclassmen along the Appalachian Trail. The trip gives incoming students the opportunity to meet a small group of new classmates and establish relationships with older student leaders. “This trip helped me make new friends,” said Maureen Roddy, a freshman majoring in medical laboratory science. Participants hiked Roan Mountain, camped under the stars, cooked outdoors, played games, swam in waterfalls and maintained and repaired hiking trails in the area. This was the 15-year for the FOOT trip, which is organized by Wright State’s Outdoor Resource Center. The trip is designed for students with all levels of hiking experience.

Nancy Carlisle and Linda Hernandez-Munguia took a seat at our table and shared their story.  Their soul-deep commitment to invest in the lives of others as others have invested in them is a key piece to stepping up and making a difference. Once again, it's clear that individuals who inspire us to rise above the circumstances change the trajectory of our story, making us want to be and do our best. While their lives would not intersect until years later, both Nancy and Linda faced challenges of adversity at a young age. Of course, rising above the hard of life requires grit and determination, a valuable asset to living our best.  The thing is .  . .  along the way . . . Nancy and Linda each formed the belief that no one needs to manage adversity alone.   This belief led them to a career path in the public school system.  Nancy is a registered nurse serving the North Clackamas School District and Linda serves as the Community Resource Specialist at Hoover Elementary School in the Salem-Keizer School District.  They finally met when Nancy set out to bring Backpack Buddies to Salem through her church, St. Mark Lutheran Church to impact children struggling with food insecurity. Backpack Buddies helps meet the needs of hungry children when other resources are unavailable.  They emphasized their goal is to give dignity to kids and their families through quietly putting bags filled with food in their backpacks.  The bags, referred to as bags of hope, are filled by a volunteer team and transported to the school.  We sat at the table in awe of how this relative simple service goes beyond giving food. Essentially, each bag of hope gives the powerful message, "You are not alone."   Nancy and Linda have inspired us by their story and service. There's no doubt that there will be kids and families who rise from adversity and set out to serve because of these two courageous women who choose to make a difference.   If you would like to serve, donate, or find out how to start BackPack Buddies for your community go to Saint Mark Lutheran's website @http://stmarksalem.org/ministries/backpack-buddies/.  Our daily podcast, "Think On This" can be found on our website under podcast, Think On This, as well as on itunes,  podbean, and on Amazon’s Alexa.
