JOYBOMB!

Life is a Festival Podcast

Welcome to a year of Life is a Festival! It has been 12 months and 40 conversations since I launched this project, and what a project it has become! In fact today’s episode opens with the announcement of some incredible news for the show: I have been asked to perform a live version of Life is a Festival for Spotify’s end of year parties in London and Stockholm next month. This exciting honor bubbled up as life’s treasures often do, thanks to the support and belief of you, my community. I will publish those interviews together as a special Holiday episode so keep you ears open for that. Today’s episode is perfect for an anniversary. If there’s one resounding theme of Life is a Festival, it is integration. Indeed, integrating festivals, psychedelics and even our regular yoga practice into our daily, sometimes prosaic, experience is the key to living life as a festival. As my mother used to say, only Hanuman the Monkey Man can leap from peak to peak. The rest of us must wander down into the deep valleys in order to ascend to lofty heights. But perhaps we might someday become like Hanuman, if we can only remember our true power. This is brief but mighty. I am interviewing my yoga teacher, Janet Stone. With her expertise in all aspects of the eight limbed path, Janet manages to pack a curriculum of knowledge into 40 minutes of casual conversation. Now in her 18th year at Yoga Tree in San Francisco, Janet teaches around the world including pretty much every yoga festival in the world from Bali Spirit to Wanderlust. On the podcast we talk about how to take yoga off the mat and assimilate asanas into our daily lives. We discuss the importance of humor and service, including Janet’s passionate dedication to the environment. Finally Janet tells the story of Hanuman, whose deep devotion to Sita and Rama gave him the power to leap all the way to the island of Sri Lanka. From Burning Man to the bake sale, Janet Stone teaches us to live life like a festival both on the mat and off it.

With an MD (focus in psychiatry) and a Masters in Public Health, Siva brings a unique and integrative approach to ayurveda. This combined with her personal and professional studies in Vedic thought have nurtured her niche: expanding ayurveda with psychospiritual healing.Siva teaches at festivals and conferences (e.g. Bhaktifest, Bali Spirit, Moksha, Assn. of Ayurvedic Physicians); develops curriculum and teaches for YogaWorks; and teaches at the nation’s premier Yoga Studies Masters Program at Loyola Marymount University in LA. Siva is the founder/director of LA’s annual celebration of the Vedic arts, Veda MeLA.Siva Mohan is a woman who figured out how to be on her path, how to prioritize her internal state of harmony, and take back control of her life experience. She changed her career, learned how to feel supported, cleaned up my relationships, cut out drama, and revolutionized how she showed up for herself. Along the way, she remedied IBS, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, nodulocystic acne, eczema, and chronic sinusitis. Of course it was all related, and being the science dork obsessed with the mind-body connection that she is, she immersed myself in learning how. Ayurveda, and yoga were vehicles for my healing and spiritual growth, and these are the tools I share with you.  Ayurveda can be complex. It is. It’s also simultaneously basic (non dualism at it’s best).  Her goal is to make it simple, and enjoyable, because then, you’re more likely to use it.Life doesn’t always feel easy, and that ayurveda can be really effective in helping us feel good even when practiced imperfectly.

My interview with Gwyn Williams at Bali Spirit festival discussing the 3 Treasures. Greetings beloved rainbow warriors. I’m coming to you today from Goa india where I’ve been for a couple months now teaching and learning and teaching again. What a blessing to be here spending time in the nourishing sea Gwyn has been teaching his entire adult life. Earlier as a physical education teacher, martial arts instructor and later as a yoga teacher and Zenthai facilitator. His passion for alternative therapies and connecting his heart with his hands led to him teaching Zen Shiatsu at his created Mt. Ninderry Healing Centre in 1999. Since this initial class he has become a national and international teacher of his own form of bodywork/movement and awareness he calls Zenthai. I have to share from his website this explanation of what zenthai is to give you an understanding of who Gywn is. On Zenthai … ‘On the surface we may see a creative form of bodywork integrating techniques and philosophy from Zen Shiatsu, Thai massage and osteopathy. However, at its core is an invitation to  freedom. Freedom not only of the structural and energetic bodies but also, if we are adventurous enough, also the mental and emotional. Experiencing true freedom is not about ‘taking on’ anything new but more-so about letting go of the traps and blockages within our body/mind that prevent us from experiencing our true nature – joyful and free.  It becomes the focused intention for both giver and receiver using tools such as touch, breath, movement, awareness and honest self inquiry that is not confined to a yoga mat or futon but each moment of our daily life.’ I find Gwyn to be an experienced and passionate advocate and educator for wellness in both energy and form. He’s a bright light himself and I’m so proud to share this uplifting AND INFORMATION PACKED EPISODE WITH YOU. Today Gwyn walks us through what in Chinese medicine is known as the 3 treasures. This is really useful information to grasp and find ways to integrate into your daily life for better health and vitality. Gwyn does give some practical tips for cultivating and caring for your three treasures so make sure you have a notebook. These two are a serious yogi power couple! Insiya and I  connected about yoga, wellness, and Ayurveda, and we set a mutual intention to do this interview but we flew in different directions before we got the chance at that time, and finally came back together to do it after the next Bali Spirit Festival. This is actually the last interview I did in Bali, but am starting the season with it because it’s honestly the one I’m most excited about right now, especially because I am doing this deep dive on Ayurveda at the moment. My panchakarma retreat in Rishikesh, India is coming up in March, and I’m launching a video series in my facebook group later this month to talk about all this Ayurveda business too. Welcome tribe! This is the final episode of season one of the Visionary Lifestyle podcast! It feels really good that I succeeded in launching the show from india and publishing the first season , mostly recorder in LA, from here. I assure It was NO small feat with the snail slow internet and intermittent power outages! Love you Mother India!!! Season 2 will launch very soon, and contains all the interviews I did at the International Yoga festival here in  in Rishikesh. It’s completely packed with amazing conversations with saints and sages, and lots of the sounds of India. I got access to some very high level teachers who are dropping a LOT of wisdom so make sure you stay tuned in next season. So One of my huge take-aways from my time in India is that it’s NOT quiet! Ha My fantasies about meditating in a silent ashram were quickly squashed haha. The beauty of that though is it became a recurring conversation and a reminder lesson that we must seek the quiet within, and develop the ability to find our center and stillness anywhere we are, and no matter what is going on around us. This is true yoga. In this episode I’m coming to you from a meditation hut in The Beatles Ashram, also known as  the Maharishi Ashram in Rishikesh India. You’ll notice the sound quality difference in this and in future episodes , because I’m now recording out in the open on the road digital nomad style. So you’ll be getting a lot more sounds of the atmosphere. I hope you embrace that and can just think of it as me bringing the world to you:) I was stressed about having the best possible sound quality for you and eventually had to surrender to what I can’t control, which is random voices and sounds that sometimes found their way into the middle of interviews.  You’ll see what I mean. I think it really adds to the charm of the interviews. So I’m  wrapping up this first season of the podcast with a heartfelt share about my time in india, which was a  bucket list item that I’m really thrilled I can now cross off my list. I’ll be sharing my insights as a first time yogi in India, as well as some practical packing and travel advice. This episode was recorded after my Ayurvedic panchakarma treatment,  and just before the International yoga festival started. Look out for an interview with my amazing panchakarma doctor coming up in the next season, I’m really happy to be bringing you some deep insight about Ayurveda. You can Check the show notes to find links to a lot of what I talk about in this episode. And please get in touch with me  and email me your feedback and questions to : Guide@visionary-lifestyle.com I’d looooove to hear from you! Have you guys rated and reviewed the show in itunes yet?
