Welcome to Discograffiti's exploration of Brian Wilson's Outside Productions, of which there are very many, discussed with both Endless Summer Quarterly's Editor-In-Chief David Beard, who is currently entrenched in a year-long series on this very topic (!), as well as Producer/Songwriter Russ Titelman—Brian's pal and confidante during this time, as well as producer of all the classic 1970s Randy Newman LPs and Brian's first solo album. In this episode, we talk about what Brian wound up getting out of his non-Beach Boy production work, what he brought back into the Beach Boy fold from all this work, the various regrets of some of the artists who worked with him but never quite hit the big time, and Russ's in-depth ruminations on the two classic songs he co-wrote with Brian: “Guess I'm Dumb” & “Sherry, She Needs Me.”There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. In today's bonus episode, Discograffiti is thrilled to introduce the passionate David Beard, whose Endless Summer Quarterly, The Beach Boys Publication of Record, is mandatory reading for Beach Boys fans. In this podcast, we talk about ESQ's origin story, how a chance meeting with Lee Dempsey changed the course of his life, our shared love of Smile and how he first learned of it, and how the memory of Carl Wilson has guided his hand over the years.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiSubscribe to Discograffiti's Patreon and receive a ceaseless barrage (4 shows a week!) of must-hear binge-listening: Patreon.com/DiscograffitiEndless Summer Quarterly [ESQ] is The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson publication of record. Steffan is back - on of the warmer days of the year to date! A Biden and Fetterman recap from PA. Hunter Biden reaches a ridiculous deal with the DOJ - nothing about that pesky laptop. Meet Al Bowman. He started out working in the LA Music Scene owning, and driving limos for such superstars as Whitney Houston, who introduced him into the world of celebrity seat filling. That provided an introduction to such luminaries as Patti LaBelle, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, The Beach Boys Brian Wilson, and even silver screen star Martha Ray. Through a chain of events, including the 1992 LA Riots, and the emerging grunge rock scene in Hollywood, his focus changed from driving stars, to creating awards shows for stars to walk the red carpet. Enter Bill Gazzarri (“The Godfather of Rock” and the owner of the legendary Sunset Strip rock club "Gazzarri's"), and The honorary mayor of Hollywood Johnny Grant, who became mentors and the inspiration for Al Bowman to begin producing music awards shows in Los Angeles for the independent artist, with the same flair, and fanfare as the big shows provided. Bowman's awards shows included: The Los Angeles Music Awards, Hollywood Fame Awards, Phoenix Music Awards, Producer Choice Honors, and the Las Vegas Fame Awards. Al has now created The Nashville Music Awards, along with creating a non-profit organization called “The Nashville Music Foundation”, providing something to the independent creative community. Al's goal is to inspire the future of music by honoring the past. Bowman explains how a simple act as walking the red carpet at special events, can assist in elevating your exposure on a national, and Global level. Unbeknownst to me, Van Dyke Parks is seated at his piano. This fact becomes clear numerous times during our conversation, as he tickles the ivory to punctate points. It’s not as if he requires the tool during the interview. Parks is a raconteur, above all. He seemingly has a story for everything, winding his way through fascinating avenues to make profound points about life, music, politics and art. Parks have lived several lives by popular culture standards, with a professional career that began as a child actor in the 50s. Ten years later, a musical break found him working as an arranger for Disney’s The Jungle Book. After a brief stint in Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, he was paired with The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, writing lyrics for Smile. The following year, he released his wildly ambitious solo debut, Song Cycle. In 2015, Parks gave his final piano performance, following unsuccessful hand surgery. But he continues to remain active. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his underrated reunion with Wilson, Orange Crate Art, we spoke to Parks about his work and the role music can play in one of the most dire moments in our country’s history.
In this episode of Mentoring for the Modern Musician the Scharff Brothers chat with Scott McCormick (blogger extraordinaire from Disc Makers and all around knowledgeable dude) about the production and arranging brilliance and prowess of the Beach Boys Brian Wilson! In anticipation for Wordstock 2017, which announced its return on Nov. 11, we take a step into the time machine and revisit last year's wordsmiths. The big news is that the subject of one of their books, a musician you might know from the soles of his shows, is coming to Oregon.Peter Ames Carlin on Paul SimonPeter Ames Carlin has written about some of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century — Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson — and his new book is no exception.Paul Simon soundtracked the 1960s, together with his soul mate, frenemy and long-time musical partner, Art Garfunkel. But as Carlin’s book “Homeward Bound” shows, the road to Graceland was strewn with contradictions, and the man who gave us some of the sweetest harmonies of the 20th century was not the guy you would want to cross over song royalties. But if he's someone you want to see, you can catch Paul Simon in all his glory at the Les Schwab Ampitheater in Bend on June 24.Lindy WestHow exactly is it Lindy West ended up at the center of so many white-hot flash points in pop culture? She has thought through difficult subjects with rigor, creativity and brio: misogyny in comedy, fat acceptance, trolling on Twitter and more. The celebrated columnist for "The Guardian" talks to us about her memoir, “Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman,” her roots at Seattle’s alt-weekly "The Stranger," and how her parents contributed to the fireproofing that lets her fight her battles.Rivka GalchenThe exquisite essays and stories of Rivka Galchen delight readers of the "New Yorker," the "New York Times" and other hot spots. All great writers meet their match, and Galchen nearly hit her own wall four years ago. Her elegantly constructed idea for a book comparing two medieval Japanese women writers was neatly derailed by the birth of her daughter. Onstage at Wordstock, Galchen tells us how she learned to embrace the kind of thoughts she was having in the throes of baby inebriation. The resulting book, “Little Labors,” is a series of short, splendid essays that perfectly describe the altered state of maternity.
The toast of the literary season is Portland’s book festival, Wordstock. This week we bring you the first of several shows we taped: a bang-up time with three exceptional authors, and one song that left us starry-eyed, recorded in front of a packed audience at the Winningstad Theater. Peter Ames Carlin on Paul Simon - 1:00Peter Ames Carlin has written about some of the most iconic musicians of the 20th century: Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. His new book taps into one of the most complex characters in pop history. Paul Simon soundtracked the 1960s, together with his soul mate, frenemy, and long-time musical partner, Art Garfunkel. But as Carlin’s book, “Homeward Bound” shows, Simon’s path is piled with contradictions. The road to Graceland was strewn with misunderstandings, and the man who gave us some of the sweetest harmonies of the 20th century was not the guy you would want to cross over song royalties. We also invited Portland singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza, the incredible voice behind the bands Y La Bamba and Tiburones, to interpret Simon's iconic hits "The Sound of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," with bandmate Philip Rogers, as well as play an original of her own.Lindy West - 22:38How exactly is it Lindy West ended up at the center of so many white-hot flash points in pop culture? In 1966, Brian Wilson led The Beach Boys into the studio to begin work on the follow up to the critically acclaimed album, Pet Sounds. Â What should have been the band's masterpiece turned into their biggest calamity as the SMiLE album unraveled and collapsed around them. Â In this podcast, Dr. Darren R. Reid takes a look at the recently released SMiLE Sessions to assess what may have been. Â Is this album the lost masterpiece of legend? Would it have secured the band's place alongside The Beatles?
