Playlist:Cuco, Jean Carter - My 45Loaded Honey - Don't SpeakKali Uchis - All I Can SayStereolab - Transmuted MatterBADBADNOTGOOD, V.C.R - Found A Light (Beale Street)Nosaj Thing, Jacques Greene - UnknownSofia Kourtesis, Daphni - UnidosCiutat - Quiero verte bailarBarry Can't Swim - About to BeginFazerdaze - MotorwaySmut - Touch & Gopableau - SACO DE BOXEO / BULERÍAS DE UN DOLIDOrestinga - Free BabyFillas de Cassandra - hibernarserusowsky - ALTAGAMAULTRALAGRIMA - DesintoxicarEscuchar audio

We're taking a moment to remember the life of soul singer Brenton Wood. He died earlier this month. He was 83. Brenton was also responsible for the hit songs Oogum Boogum Song, Gimme Little Sign and Baby You Got It. When Brenton joined us in 2023 he was still going on tour well into his 80s. He talked with Bullseye about that decision and his secret to sounding so great well into that age. He also got into his time growing up in San Pedro and the South Bay area of Los Angeles.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

His music has helped define, what these days are called, Lowrider Oldies. Brenton Wood is now in his 80s, and he's absolutely still got it. If you can, you should go see him live. He is currently wrapping up his farewell tour. It's called the Catch You On The Rebound Tour. Brenton Wood joins Bullseye to talk about his career in music and what keeps him performing. #741 - Brenton Wood The Brenton Wood Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. So, you're here to listen to the Brenton Wood interview that Paul had, right? He's a great singer, songwriter and recording artist with early roots in the Los Angeles area, but did you know he was born in Shreveport, Louisiana? Brenton Wood has written and recorded some great music, but don't you just love the songs “Oogum Boogum” and “Gimme Little Sign”? You could imagine Paul being the kind of guy that loves those two classic songs, can't you? This interview was originally for the radio, and would you believe this conversation with Brenton Wood took place really late at night? Yeah? Can't you hear the sounds coming out of the radio as the moon shined brightly? Maybe it's a night sky when you listen to this or is the sun out? Side note, would you like to help support The Paul Leslie Hour? Will you go to http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support? You do know that we appreciate you listening and supporting the show, don't you? Are you ready for the interview with Brenton Wood to start? You're nodding your head aren't you? But, you knew that I knew that, didn't you? The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
It's an entire episode of pranks as Murphy starts a chain reaction that brings about a fun episode and fun discussions. Includes: the mystery behind the unveiling of Watergate source “Deep Throat,” how Legend Nora Ephron used that knowledge to get back at her ex-husband, and more on Connie Chung's history! Plus the history behind the Brenton Wood “Gimme A Sign” sung by Brenton Wood. (wait until the end of the episode for something special!)
Frequent guest and music lover Camila Risso is always on the lookout for sounds that move her...or make her want to move! When she discovered then-25-year-old Leon Bridges and his debut album 'Coming Home' in 2015, she was immediately drawn to his smooth, soulful voice and deeply personal songs. You can brand it as 'retro', but the sound he created with Austin Jenkins and Josh Block of the Texas psych-rock band White Denim is both meticulously old-school and profoundly timeless. Songs featured in this episode: These Arms Of Mine - Otis Redding; Loveable - Sam Cooke; I've Got So Much To Give - Barry White; Oogum Boogum - Brenton Wood; Coming Home, Better Man, Brown Skin Girl, Smooth Sailin', Shine, Lisa Sawyer, Flowers, Pull Away, Twistin' & Groovin', River - Leon Bridges; Let's Talk About It - White Denim; Motorbike, River (live) - Leon Bridges
Tis Episode i talk about Brenton woods's Famous "Oogum Boogum" song and how it reminds me of good times with a passed family member
El momento Boza. Esa voz que remonta a las raíces más sureñas. Terence Boylan pidiéndole a la gran bailarina que no cuelgue sus zapatillas de gloria. James Taylor cantó al Rainy Day Man y Kat Edmonson a la Rainy Day Woman. The Main Ingrediente grabaron a su manera “Superwoman” de Stevie Wonder. This week's episode is for the fashion plates: we play & discuss four songs about “krazy klothes.” First up is Arnie “Woo Woo” Ginsburg and the 3Ds advertising a local clothier in “Pal Mal Rock” (3:33) – listen up so you'll know what to wear when you go to the hops! Next up is The Royal Teens and their immortal treatise on the proper display of the gluteus maximus: “Short Shorts.” (35:58) Who wears them? Do they like them? And, even though they tell you not to wear white after Labour Day, the Majorettes are firmly in favour of their baby's “White Levis” (1:06:39) (and his tennis shoes, and his surfing hat, and his big plaid Pendleton shirt.) Last but never least, Brenton Wood (1:28:53) returns (he appeared in Episode 2 – “Psychotic Reaction”) to soundtrack your strut down the street in your funky ensemble– but is it too much? Never!!

This week Craig hits the 'rewind' button on the third episode of the new Twilight Zone and, well... the third time’s the charm, as they say. With "Replay," the series (mostly) overcomes its rocky start and presents a worthwhile--- and important--- episode about the black experience in America…. and not from a historical standpoint, either. This is now. This is real. There’s less humor this week than usual, which is completely appropriate. “Neither Here Nor There (‘Really? Another Revision?’ Revision)” by Twin Loops “Oogum Boogum Song” performed by Brenton Wood (from the album Oogum Boogum, copyright 1967 by Double Shot Records) “Oogum Boogum Song” performed by Twinkle Twinkle Little Rock Star (from the album Lowrider Baby! Lullaby Versions of Cruisin’ Classics, copyright 2019 by Roma Music Group) “On Danse a la Villette” performed by Basil Bunelik (solo accordian) “Steganos” performed by The Honey Sacrifice (from the album Nights in Columbus, copyright 2010 by Neo Ouija Records) “Backspace Unwind” performed by Lamb (from the album Backspace Unwind, copyright 2014 by Butler Records) The Twilight Zone is a trademark of CBS, Inc. Honey Cone [00:23] a side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part I)" b side: "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (Part II)" Hot Wax HS 7110 1971 Of course the show is going on when I've got more monkey tunes to spin. Fun fact: lead singer Edna Wright is the sister of Darlene Love. Reached #5 on the R&B charts and #15 on the Hot 100. Another fun fact: Hot Wax was started by the great Holland, Dozier and Holland when they left Motown in 1968. Murray Head [07:20] a side: "One Night in Bangkok" b side: "Merano" MCA Records PB-13988 1984 The sound of 80s musicals is alive and well in this production from ABBA's Bjorn and Benny teaming up with Tim Rice, featuring Murray Head doing to the spoken word bits. Oh right, it's a musical about Chess... called Chess. The great Frank Rich described the Broadway production thusly: "a suite of temper tantrums, [where] the characters ... yell at one another to rock music". INXS [19:35] a side: "The One Thing" b side: "Phantim of the Opera" ATCO Records 7-99905 1982 The lead single from their 1982 album Shabooh Shoobah, released in the US in 1983. The b-side is a tongue in cheek reference to yes, the Phantom of the Opera and INXS lead guitarist Tim Farriss. The Damned [26:15] a side: "One Way Love" b side: "Don't Cry Wolf" Stiff Records BUY 24 1977 A 1981 Re-release of their second single originally release in 1977, this time with the sides flipped around. Interestingly enough, this was produced by Nick Mason after the band originally tried to get the ever reclusive Syd Barrett to produce. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy [34:39] a side: "One with the Birds" b side: "Southside of the World" Palace Records PR20 1998 The first official release of the newly minted Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, after a brief spell recording and performing as Will Oldham, after a slightly longer spell recording and performing of all the Palace iterations. Brenton Wood [42:53] a side: "The Oogum Boogum Song" b side: "I Like the Way You Love Me" Double Shot Records 111 1967 Hot stuff and cool stuff from Brenton Wood. This single reached #19 on the R&B charts and #34 on the Hot 100 in 1967. Seems like it should have gone much higher than that if you ask me. The Marmalade [48:25] a side: "Otherwise It's Been a Perfect Day" b side: "I See the Rain" Epic Records 5-10236 1967 Sorta Kinksian, sort Bacharachian a-side from these Glaswegians. But that flipside! Some excellent psyche pop. Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart [55:07] a side: "Out & About" b side: "My Little Chickadee" A&M Records 858 Or as they say in Canada, Oot and Aboot. Super singer/songwriters release a bit of their own magic that reached #39 on the Hot 100 in 1967. And the nostalgic b-side sort of sets us up for when we reach Sonny & Cher's 1967 single "Podunk" in a few episodes from now. Fun fact: Jeanie was their drummer, and Phil Spector approves. due to a low amount of listeners for the last 3 episodes of this show (but I did see a steady increase of listenership since recording this episode) I'm going to do the two parts of the show all in one episode for this week and get back to the two part episodes next week. in this week's episode of the podcast, I talk about one of my all time favorite R&B/Soul records from the 60's and break it down for you and show you what makes it so good and why I think you would love it as well, and then I dive into the song's history which will include the studio the song was recorded at and the name of the band used on the recording and who played the iconic organ solo on this song.here's the link to this week's song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W79LIAy_qp8You can Also follow me and reach out to me on IG right here:https://www.instagram.com/iheartoldies/You can also check out more of my original music right herehttp://www.samwilliamsmusic.netIf you liked my analysis on this week's song and you found the information I talked about on this week's episode interesting, and you listened to this song for the first time and you fell in love with it and I turned you on to a brand new artist/song that you've never heard of before, you can reach out to me at sam@hickeywilliams.com or DM in on instagram @iheartoldies.

On 1982's Big Ship, Freddie McGregor's love of African-American soul music comes through loud and clear -- even though many of the more Rastafarian-oriented lyrics are very much a product of the Jamaican experience. True to form, the singer provides a variety of political and apolitical songs. While gems like "Holy Mount Zion" and "Get United" underscore his political/spiritual beliefs as a Rastafarian, McGregor favors more of a lovers rock approach on "Let Me Be the One," "Stop Loving You," and "Sweet Lady." In reggae circles, the term lovers rock refers to reggae that chooses romantic themes over social or political topics -- essentially, it is the reggae equivalent of romantic R&B. And any soul lover who has spent a lot of time savoring the romantic sweet soul of the Delfonics or Brenton Wood should have no problem getting into the lovers rock on this album. For that matter, McGregor's more sociopolitical songs have just as much classic soul appeal. Reissued on CD in 2001, Big Ship is among the best and most consistent albums that McGregor provided in the 1980s.

This week Sam sits down with singer-songwriter Brenton Wood. Throughout most of is career, Wood was cheated out of the money and rights to the songs he wrote. In this interview, he and Sam talk about this and how he's been able to remain happy throughout the years despite it all. Brenton's music is infectious and positive, as he is himself. Plus, you get to hear Sam sing with Brenton a bit--and they don't sound all that bad. ------------------------------------------------- Music for the show provided by @Vanilla and @jinsangbeats.
