Two musicians with Diné roots give audiences distinctly different takes on their desert Southwest origins. The Phoenix-based band Mogley and the Zoniez have built their sound playing for years in the Southwest café and bar circuit. The melodic and energetic indie-alt sound and distinctive vocals have become a favorite for a growing number of fans. They have a new EP to add to their set list, Better Late Than Never. We'll hear from lead singer Quenton Oney about how they reach their audience and what's next. Hataałii's new album, "I'll Be Around", is an affirming and beautifully dark low-fi project. He ditched the professional studio route for a DIY production in a shed in Albuquerque. The result is a personal and intimate set of songs sure to find far-reaching resonance.

The Spinners' story is one of perseverance, evolution, and timeless music that continues to resonate with fans of Motown, Philly Soul, funk, and classic R&B. Their smooth harmonies, intricate vocal arrangements, and signature choreography have made them one of the most enduring groups in soul music history. From their early days in Detroit with Motown to their meteoric rise with Atlantic Records, The Spinners are true legends of the genre.Formed in the '50s in Michigan, The Spinners came together as a vocal group determined to make their mark in the burgeoning R&B scene. They found themselves signed to Motown Records in the '60s, a label that was home to acts like The Temptations, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. But The Spinners never quite achieved the same success as their labelmates during their time there. They struggled to break through in a roster filled with some of the biggest names in soul music.Their fate changed in the early '70s when they made a decision that would define their career. Leaving Motown, the band joined Atlantic, under the guidance of producer Thom Bell. With Bell at the helm, The Spinners recorded a string of hits that defined an era. Songs like I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling in Love, One of a Kind (Love Affair), Mighty Love, and Then Came You—their duet with Dionne Warwick—all became massive hits. Their run of success continued throughout the '70s, with classic tracks like Games People Play and Rubberband Man. The group became known not only for their vocal prowess but also for their stage presence. Their synchronized dance moves and sharp suits made them one of the most exciting live acts of the era.As time passed, The Spinners underwent several lineup changes. They continued to tour and perform, keeping their music fresh for new generations of fans. Even as the music industry evolved, The Spinners remained a staple of classic soul, their songs continuing to be played on R&B stations and featured in movies, commercials, and TV shows.Amidst the transitions, one of the most significant moments in the group's more recent history was the inclusion of Jessie Peck. A longtime fan of The Spinners, Jessie grew up admiring them as a child, wishing one day to be a part of their act. Before joining the group, Jessie had already made a name for himself as a talented vocalist with a deep appreciation for classic R&B. His rich baritone and smooth delivery made him a natural fit for The Spinners' sound, and when the opportunity arose for him to join the legendary group, it was a dream come true.Jessie's arrival injected new energy into the group while maintaining the signature style that fans had come to love. He stepped into his role with the utmost respect for the foundation laid by those who came before him. His passion for the music, combined with his natural talent and stage presence, made him a seamless addition to the lineup. As a performer, Jessie embraced The Spinners' commitment to delivering not just great music but an unforgettable show. The Spinners have always been about more than just singing—they're entertainers in the truest sense, combining tight harmonies with choreographed moves that keep audiences engaged from the first note to the last.Even after decades in the industry, The Spinners continue to thrive, bringing their soulful sound to audiences around the world. Their influence can be heard in countless artists who followed in their footsteps, and their ability to bridge generations of music lovers is a testament to the timeless nature of their songs. Jessie Peck's presence in the group is a reflection of their commitment to excellence, ensuring that The Spinners remain not just a nostalgic act but a living, breathing force in the world of soul, R&B, and classic funk.Jessie Peck joins us this week to share some amazing stories about The Spinners.#classichits #r&b #musiclegends

What's the best way to engage (or disengage) a contentious relative who wants to argue about politics, and how do we remain united as churches and families in these divided times? Professor, author, and preacher Tony Campolo died last week. Shane Claiborne returns to discuss his friendship with Campolo and his legacy of challenging the American church with the “red letters” of the Bible. Welcome back to The Round 12 MOTIVATIONAL MASTERY Podcast Show! Episode #114 "TRUST YOURSELF" Featuring: "I'LL BE AROUND!"... INTERVIEW OF MY YOUNGER SELF! (REPEAT EPISODE) As I have learned to negotiate the twists and turns of my full life, I believe I have come to a good place, and I hope to keep going because I am enjoying the journey more than ever now. And after my interview last week with my dear son, Omar as Co-Host, I realized that he had come a long way, and is at a good place too! For some reason, that makes me take a pause for a few moments of reflection. And, if you're a parent, or connected good friend or loved one of someone else that you have done right by, and they're ok... and You're OK... then maybe you can give yourself a figurative pat on the back for staying true. Makes me want to shout out my younger son, Ali here too in the same breath, because he is firing on all cylinders as well. (We wrestled on the mat a few rounds yesterday!) I know that I would not be where I am today, without all the various, cross-section of experiences I've had to get me here. What would YOU tell your younger self? How could you affect your own life if you could council yourself THEN! Well, what comes to me now is that if I was able to get my two babies over the road to manhood standing up... Then maybe this episode is firm proof that when you believe in the quality of your life, and your purpose, and your drive, your determination, and your grit... then you should TRUST YOURSELF!... Alec Wilder and Harold Arlen are both composers in the great American Songbook tradition. Chances are good you've never heard of Alec Wilder, even if you're familiar with some of his popular songs, like "I'll Be Around" or "While We're Young." He was also a prolific composer of chamber music, many of the best known virtuosos of the day were personal friends of his, and he wrote most of his chamber works with them in mind. Frank Sinatra was so enamored with Wilder's chamber music that he released a recording of several of his instrumental works as “conducted” by Sinatra! Harold Arlen is perhaps best remembered for his score for The Wizard of Oz and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is one of the most recorded songs of all time. It's easy to overlook the fact that he wrote over 500 songs during his career, a large number of which became standards, about which Irving Berlin said "He wasn't as well known as some of us, but he was a better songwriter than most of us, and he will be missed by all of us."

As part of a 10-concert European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today's finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist's 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter's latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Vivaldi and Bach to Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne. It is set for release on 10 November, with three taster tracks to be issued digitally, complete with videos: Williams's Theme from Schindler's List on 6 October; the Allegro finale from Vivaldi's Concerto for 3 Violins on 27 October; and the central Largo from Bologne's Violin Concerto in A major on the same day as the album. The Vienna concert was filmed as a Unitel production, in co-production with Deutsche Grammophon & ZDF, and in cooperation with Arte Concert & Wiener Musikverein. Viewers around the world can enjoy it now on STAGE+, with the exception of those in France and Germany, who will be able to access it on the platform from 29 December onwards. Track Listing:1 Vivaldi: Concerto for 3 violins in F major, RV 5512 Bach, J S: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, BWV10413 Previn: Nonet for two string quartets and double bass4 Saint-Georges: Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 25 Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV10486 Williams, John: Nice to Be Around (from Cinderella Liberty)7 Vivaldi: The Four Seasons: Summer, RV315 - Presto8 Williams, John: Schindler's List: ThemeClassical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcast with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

It's time for another edition of our series Chartbreakers, where we take a look at the trends and shakeups happening on the Billboard Hot 100. This week, however, the chart has been dominated by Drake and his album For All the Dogs, which takes up a grand total of 23 spots on the Hot 100. So, rather than do a story on that, Charlie and Nate take a look at the brand new TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, established only last month. This chart – which measures the most popular songs on the platform through each song's number of videos, views, and user engagement – perhaps best shows the things that are popular and pervasive among a contingent of younger music listeners. Here, there's room for everybody from Mitski to Sexyy Red to J. Dash, highlighting that the music that's popular isn't necessarily what hits the radio. JOY GENERATORSI first heard The Mills Brothers on a compilation disc in the 70's with their rendition of F.D.R. Jones (a song with a complicated history). But, what struck me right off the bat was the fanfare of mouth trumpets, the infectious swinging groove, the unadulterated joy that gushed forth, and the perfectly in synch sibling harmony. This was one of the most enduring acts in American History: 54 years, 2000 recordings selling 50 million copies; the first African-American group to have their own radio show and a #1 on the Billboard Chart: Paper Doll, which is, of course, included on this collection. The cart is manufactured by GRT, a division of Paramount, but The Mills Brothers recorded multiple versions of their hits, so most likely these more mellow and mature evocations are third or fourth generation renderings, packaged for a nostalgic 8 track community.I had no clue the extent to which the “fart sound” that I learned to make by humming through my lips could be employed to such symphonic magnificence. The music these gentlemen created without instruments was mind blowing, and they employed their signature ensemble of ersatz trumpet, trombone, and tuba generously throughout their careers.  Listen, and be swept into the joyous vortex. Spanning from early jazz, through Doo-Wop, and vocal Rock n Roll, The Mills Brothers embodied the entire spectrum of 20th century American popular music. Such titles as Lazy River, Glow Worm, Basin Street Blues are timeless, and when you hear them, you hear the past, present, and the future blend together as smoothly as their unparalleled genetic synchronization. They were the children of a barber who helmed his own actual barbershop quartet, so these gentlemen were born to harmonize, which they did better than anyone.Song titles: Paper Doll, Nevertheless, Till Then, Cielito Lindo, Basin Street Blues, Rockin' Chair, You Always Hurt the One You Love, Across the Alley from the Alamo, I'll Be Around, Lazy River, Glow Worm, Be My Life's Companion.

Mike Cuenca! A conversation with a wonderful filmmaker Mike Cuenca, who was recommended to me by cinematographer Jessica Gallant, with whom we both have worked with. Jessica is currently shooting my feature film Reunion, which is getting done slowly but surely. Mike's episode can also be found on YouTube channel: With Miska Podcast Episodes. https://youtu.be/NTdVnJUzrp4 This is a wonderful, inspiring, and also a very down to earth conversation about the reality of making it happen in LA. Mike shares with us how it is to be a truly indie filmmaker. Mike wants to do his films in a way that they are true to his artistic vision, and he doesn't want to compromise this, even though it may be more difficult to get funding for his projects. He has made various indie films and series, and what makes his film I'll Be Around exceptional is how big it looks. The shooting style is very indie, but the film has many locations, a big cast, bands… lots of stuff. In our conversation Mike tells how he creates all this with a very low budget. I loved talking with Mike, he's a true artist and a cinephile. This talk is a wonderful reminder how good it is to stay true to your own artistic voice instead of trying to please everyone. We also talk lots about Mike's adventures as a musician, and we share few words about the Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki! “Shot Down” tells the story of the crew of the “Susan Ruth”, a WWII B-17 shot down on Feb. 8, 1944 over the French/Belgium Border. The name was given to the aircraft by Pilot Howard Snyder in honor of his young daughter. Steve Snyder, Howard's son, has written a meticulously researched and detailed book that describes the lives of the crew members and their harrowing months in hiding from German forces. The book also tells the stories of the brave Belgian citizens who risked all to keep the American crew members safe. Steve had a great deal of material to work with in putting together Shot Down. He had diaries and correspondence from the crew members as well as interviews with his father Howard before he died. There were also some surprises. He was able to get in contact with the German aviator who was one of the pilots that shot down his father's plane. (Both German fighters were also shot down by the B-17 in that action.) A random Facebook message also put him in touch with the granddaughter of one of the Belgian rescuers. Howard Snyder eventually got tired of hiding all the time and not being able to make the arduous escape journey through Spain. Because he had some infantry training before going to pilot school he decided to join The Maquis – a resistance fighter group. This was very unusual in the history of WWII. Of the 10 member crew of the Susan Ruth, only five were eventually able to return home. Two crewmembers were killed in the attack and three were captured and executed by the Germans – a war crime. Many of the other five families only knew that their loved ones were missing in action until they received telegrams that they were safe. TAKEAWAY: It was particularly impactful to talk with Steve while sitting a mere 20 feet away from the B-17 “I'll Be Around” on display at the 390th Memorial Museum in Tucson, AZ.

Key Points, Top Takeaways, and Memorable Quotes“What you should be intending at the end of the season when you walk into the locker room you're either crying out sorrow or crying out of joy, but at least if you're doing that, it means your team is fully invested.” -Russell, Quoting Coach K @ 3:05“That agility and ability to adapt is the hallmark of a real icon.” -Wendy @ 4:57“There's not a team I've watched that represents their community like St. Peters.” 7:50“Coaches need great players more than great players need coaches.” 9:22“A great coach can take a great athlete and make them a better person.” -Wendy @ 10:04“Three things that are essential for moving someone from potential talent to performance on stage at their best are technique, discipline, then performing on demand.” 12:30“Coaches really have to look at understanding their own conception of failure and what that means to them because the last thing that you want is for failure to create a situation where kids can't succeed or can't be effective.”  18:09“Can we as parents and coaches provide access for our players, for our children to one, figure out what they love to do, give them opportunities to do that, to experience that.  Then once they find something that they love to do, how are we able to put them in positions where they're getting enough positive experiences where it builds on itself and crescendos and there's momentum building for them to follow it wherever it goes.” 30:00“Where we find ourselves now in society or how we view wins and losses, success and failure, is making this assumption that what kids are doing is a reflection of you being a great parent or a great coach. I tell coaches all the time you understand that you are basing your happiness and your sense of worth on 15, 16, 17, and 18-year-olds.” 34:12“We have to make the process, although hard, we have to make it fun.” 35:31“You can have your best game, best game plan, kids are on it, they're executing, they're playing together, and you can still lose the game.” 39:32“There has to be a certain level of obsessiveness to master something.” 40:24“Isn't that what we want for all our kids, whether you're a coach or a parent, you want them to feel enriched by what they are doing, you want it to become a part of them.” 42:29“One of the things we often talk about is the concept of safe people or safe places.” 50:35“You look at sports and you look at teams, you look at the coach-player relationship, you want to create a safe place for kids to be able to operate.  You want to create safe relationships between athletes and coaches so that real growth can happen.” 53:22“What is your main intent; to demonstrate your anger that they're not doing something, or they're doing it wrong or helping them to do it right? 57:42“If we're not asking the right questions, if we're not identifying what's really happening inside us or around us, then whatever collaboration or solution that we come up with, it will always miss the mark.” 1:02:03“Wisdom is pattern recognition.” -Wendy quoting Chip Conley @ 1:02:42“Our mission as coaches is to serve the greater good of our players, not our own selfish ego.” -Wendy quoting Russell @ 1:05:47“When one player or a group within the team is treated with different rules than the rest of the players, coach-player trust is broken and the team will fracture in pressure moments that will require team unity.” -Wendy quoting Russell @ 1:06:12“I have no problem, as a coach, taking an L if it meant that in the long run, the team would function better.  I have no problem taking an L and not having a player play if it emphasizes to that player the importance of being a good teammate,or being on time, or treating your teammates well.  It comes back to that self-awareness thing.” 1:12:26“It's about being in the moment and then doing the next right thing.” -Wendy @ 1:36:47“Through this whole process, I just realized that I'm high strung.” 1:39:12“Giving yourself permission to forgive yourself. Give yourself permission to say okay, that wasn't a great choice.” 1:40:53 Guest BioRussell Raypon is a credentialed school psychologist in Fresno, California, coaching consultant, author, and Associate Head Coach for Boys Varsity Basketball for the Washington Union High School Panthers.
