The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

When it comes to instruments that are not easily designed for improvising soloists, there is perhaps none more difficult to handle than the harp. And when it comes to contemporary jazz harpists, there is perhaps none more influential in this moment than Brandee Younger.  From the very beginning, as a young music student growing up on Long Island, Brandee Younger was toeing the line between her classical, orchestral musical education and the hiphop, soul and pop music that she grew up loving. She spent her early years musically code switching, trying to figure out how to make sense of her sensibilities.  But for those who listened closely to the samples on records by Jay Z, Pete Rock, The Pharcyde, J. Dilla, or Common it was clear that the sound of the harp had become part of the language of modern music.  Many of the harp samples heard on those in early hip hop records featured two African American women, who, like Brandee, learned to thrive beyond their perceived limitations: Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. Eventually both Ashby and Coltrane would become two of her biggest influences.  Younger eventually made history as the first Black female solo artist to be nominated for a Grammy - for Best Instrumental Composition in 2021, for “Beautiful is Black” from her album Somewhere Different. She has also worked with the likes of Beyonce, John Legend, Drake & Lauryn Hill, as well as jazz artists including Christian McBride, Kat Edmonson, Marcus Strickland, Kassa Overall, Makaya Mccraven, and Ravi Coltrane. On her recently released album Brand New Life she honors Dorothy Ashby and enlists icons of hip-hop and R&B, including Pete Rock, Mumu Fresh & Meshell Ndegeocello. The album was produced by Makaya Mccraven.  We spoke recently about her journey from orchestra girl to emerging icon, the challenges of playing the harp in a contemporary context, and why she's done running from the harp police and the jazz police. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

We are enjoying the music of the women of Celtic music this week on the podcast. There are some who continue to devalue women and strip them of their rights. But this podcast believes strongly that women too need representation. That's why I play at least one podcast a quarter highlighting the women of Celtic music. And I'll be honest. That's not nearly enough. FairPle is an organization based in Ireland that seeks to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion, and development of Irish traditional and folk music. They advocate for equal opportunity and balanced representation for all. A recent look at the top festivals in Ireland revealed that less than a quarter of all musicians featured at festivals were women. Headliners are even less. And I get it. Again, I do this feature on women in Celtic music every quarter. That's not a lot. I hope to increase the number of these shows and to continue to highlight Celtic women. But it's a tough process with my time constraints. If you have ideas or suggestions or want to help, make something happen, please drop me a line. And make sure you sign up for the FairPle.com website for more details about the work they are doing. “The Kat Edmonson Show!” Machine Dazzle! Flying blind!Vocalist, Kat Edmonson RETURNS to the show! With all the familiarity of talking to an old friend, we dive into bucket list goals of the past and future, finding inspiration in the unlikeliest of places, and a show where even the best soundcheck can lead to surprises at downbeat! FEATURED RELEASE:Kat Edmonson“Dreamers Do” (2020) Getting to Know: Kat!Kat Edmonson is an award-winning songwriter and singer "with an equal foothold in jazz, cabaret and vintage cosmopolitanism pop" (The New York Times).  She has been featured on Austin City Limits, Tiny Desk Concerts, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Late Show with David Letterman.Raised on the music and film of the early-to-mid-twentieth century, Kat is a rare artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant. She performs original songs and familair classics in her live show, interweaving humorous anecdotes, philosophical musings, and her love of film with disarming candor and vulnerability. Her longtime band members' keen and sensitive accompaniment allows Kat to freely veer off-script as she's often inclined to do.Kat is equally comfortable on the stage, in the recording studio, on a movie set, or recording The Kat Edmonson Show from the intimacy of her own home. She has played major stages across the United States, Europe, and Asia from Carnegie Hall to the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Blue Note in Japan. In 2016, she appeared in Woody Allen's Cafe Society as a 1930s jazz singer and was highlighted on the official soundtrack performing her version of “Mountain Greenery.” Her experience in Allen's film inspired the artist to study the craft of acting. She subsequently spent two years in conservatory at The William Esper Studio in New York City. Watch the interview on our YouTube channel here!

Today, I'm joined by American vintage pop singer/songwriter, Kat Edmonson. there's something very special about her voice, and Kat's music is unlike anything we've had on the show before. We talk about her career, how she found her love for music, and how she ended up singing such a unique genre.  Next Kat sings us two songs from her new album ‘Dreamers Do', leaving me speechless.  Finally we talk about food, Kat's love of cooking and the different foods we love from around the world.  “I noticed music very much as a kid. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kat Edmonson over Zoom video! Edmonson’s new album Dreamers Do is out now via Spinnerette Records.Dreamers Do reached the #1 spot on Billboard’s Traditional Jazz chart, and the album debuted #1 at iTunes Jazz, #2 Most Added at Jazzweek and was named Deezer’s Album of the Week upon release. The album combines mid-20th century Disney songs (from Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Bedknobs on Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Babes in Toyland), with familiar classics (“What A Wonderful World” as well as “All I Do is Dream of You” from Singin in the Rain), and features two new original songs from Edmonson (“Too Late to Dream” and “Someone’s In The House.”)“Dreamers Do takes place in a single night, from bedtime till morning. It's about our concepts around dreaming- all of the wonderful things and the fearful things, the things that keep us awake in the middle of the night,” Edmonson explains of the new album, “It's also about the quiet power of merely having a dream. There are interludes between the songs indicating different points in this nocturnal journey and if someone wants to listen to the entire record as an experience, it's available to them.”The LP follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.” NPR Music raves the album is “a handsome showcase for her songwriting, which has grown ever more confident over the last decade,” while the Associated Press says the record “sounds like an alternate soundtrack to an Audrey Hepburn film.”In 2014 Edmonson released The Big Picture, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers, #1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart, and #2 on Total Jazz Chart. Her 2015 performance on “CBS This Morning: Saturday” garnered the program’s highest rated viewership since 2006. Her 2012 LP Way Down Low was described by The New York Times as “fresh as a spring bouquet,” and her performances at WNYC’s Soundcheck and Daytrotter were included in “Best Live Performances” and “Best Sessions of 2012,” respectively. The Texas native began crafting her signature sound while performing in Austin’s local club circuit for years before releasing her debut LP Take To The Sky in 2009. She went on to tour worldwide with high profile acts including Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak, Gary Clark Jr., Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Nick Lowe and more.We want to hear from you!
