Think you can't run a 100 mile ultra? Well the truth is....you absolutely can! Especially if you read this awesome new book by Jen Benson. This lunch we had such a lovely chat to Jen about 'The Path We Run', which charts the ups and downs of her 100 mile journey, with advice and inspiration along the way from ultra running greats and experts like Courtney Dauwalter, Jasmin Paris, Beth Pascall, Lucy Bartholemew and more. It's a great read, wonderfully written with some fascinating insights. For example, did you know, Courtney DNFed her first 100 miler? There are lots of great tips and bits of advice in our chat, but even more in the book, so pop it on your Christmas list NOW! Have you ever wondered how a world-class ultra-marathon runner and a paediatrician find balance? Meet our guest, Beth Pascall, winner of the Western States 100 in 2021... an embodiment of grit, tenacity, and perseverance. She unpacks her journey, addressing her battle with a recurring injury, the mental toll it's taken, and her unyielding determination to run again. We further delve into Beth's world, where she discusses letting go of sponsorship pressures and her thoughts on the differences between bike racing and running. She candidly shares her journey of preparing for the Western States and striking a balance between her medical career and her passion for running. Beth's reflections on her six-month sabbatical and her perspective on running as a selfish pursuit, but one that complements medicine, are genuinely thought-provoking. We also gained some practical advice from Beth on eating enough for injury prevention and performance enhancement. Our conversation doesn't stop there; we discuss current affairs surrounding the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) and the Dacia sponsorship, the decision of Killian Jornet not to participate, and the impact of sponsorship in races. Her story is a beautiful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. His attempt to break into the top ten at the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc was made into an award-winning film, Underdog; and the documentary Totally FKT followed him and John Kelly as they raced to break the 268-mile Pennine Way record in 2020. Damian has also set records on the Paddy Buckley Round, the South West Coast Path, the Cape Wrath Trail (with Beth Pascall), and Wainwright's Coast to Coast. Damian's journalism has featured in Runner's World, Women's Running and Trail Running and his previous books include In It for the Long Run, A Year on the Run and the official National Trail Guide to the Pennine Way.He is a UK Athletics running coach and is a founding member of The Green Runners, a community of runners working towards a fitter planet. His most recent book We Can't Run Away From This is an important and, indeed, vital examination of the impact of running in our climate and ecological emergency.Damian is a genuine, passionate and humble person and my assumption of him to be a 'thoroughly nice human' was not dispelled. This was an entertaining, thought-provoking and, at times, emotional conversation, and I hope that it inspires listeners as much as it did me. We discuss vulnerability; what 'challenge', 'competition' and 'toughness' actually look like; learning from failure; the meaning and strength of community; why we need collective action; speaking out; celebrating imperfection; puns; what inclusivity looks like, and, perhaps most importantly, his latest book and working towards a greener future for our planet.Damian Hall IG: @ultra_damoJoin: The Green RunnersReRun Clothing: www.rerunclothing.orgWhere There's a Hill- Sabrina VerjeeMore Fuel You- Renee McGregorBlack Sheep- Sabrina Pace-Humphreys Hosted on Acast. Straight outta the mighty West Coast, Ruth of course is no stranger to Dirt Church Radio, having appeared on episodes 021,078,124, 150, and 173!!!. Ruth went on a US College running scholarship as a promising junior but  fell out of love with running, moved to Taiwan, fell back in love with running, discovered she was incredible at trail running and began an astonishing career that we are lucky to bear witness to. After success at marathon-ish distance trail races, last year she ran her first 100 mile race, at Western States, no less, coming second behind Beth Pascall. This year, she lined up again for her second 100 miler and she went and won it. She also now has the third and sixth fastest women's times in history. You'll hear that her build-up did not exactly go smoothly this time - she had an achilles problem, two twisted ankles, and Covid when she got to the US, just five weeks out from the race. But it was that string of bumps in the road which made her turn to some help with the mental side and it brought about a new attitude and a real joy for running - which manifested itself in her being joined by dinosaur costume-clad crew members at the finish line. Eugene talks about all this and more with Ruth on this episode of Dirt Church Radio. Also! We give away our last Tarawera entry to a very special Greatest Run Ever . For Beth it was trying rowing, cycle touring and triathlon, until she found ultra-endurance running.  “I don't think I ever really believed I could Western States until 2018 when I got picked.”  The importance of confidence. “I came to realize that I thought my confidence was affecting my results because I truly never thought I could do well in a race. Just having people around me that really believed in me and gave me that confidence.” She's done 250-mile distances which add the sleep deprivation element into it  “It's possible to keep going and also learning to listen to your body, that way you'll know what it feels like when you need to back off.”   Resources: Beth Pascal Instagram   Beth Pascal Website   Beth Pascal Twitter   Beth Pascal's Interview at Western States     Thank you to BEAM, Generation UCAN, and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode.   A new product that I have been trying out is Beam. Thanks so much to Beth Pascall for chatting to us about her incredible Bob Graham Round women's record, 24th July 2020.   Original YouTube version here https://youtu.be/0_RDQVwPeQ8   In this film we talk about how Beth got into ultra running, how she trained for her record-breaking Bob Graham round during the pandemic, how she balances running with her work as a busy doctor, and why she has spent so much time on the bike recently...   She also gives us an insight into how she recovers between the Western States 100 and the UTMB (both of which she hopes to complete again in 2021).   Beth shares with us what she eats on her long distance challenges and races, and what qualities she looks for in her pacers and support crew.   She reveals what it's like to climb Broad Stand after 40miles of running, how she felt at the end coming into Keswick having broken the ladies' record, and how far she thinks women can go - can they beat Billy's time of 13 hours 53 like George Foster did recently with his 13:44?   Finally she talks about what's coming next for her in 2021 - we wish you all the best Beth!   ----   Support me on Patreon for perks & prizes https://www.patreon.com/WildGingerRunning   Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/wildgingerrunning/   Get a Wild Ginger Running t-shirt or buff here https://wildgingerrunning.co.uk/shop/   Book a place on my beginner - intermediate trail running training camp here https://wildgingerrunning.co.uk/trainingcamp/   Run in the 100-mile UTMB course over 6-days from Chamonix with me here! https://www.tracks-and-trails.com/holidays/mont-blanc-ultra-trail-wild-ginger-running

Beth Pascall, 32 is a true trail blazing ultra runner.  Even as a young girl, there was something about exploring the outer edges of comfort and challenging herself that appealed.  From begging her dad and brother to let her go on a long bike ride when she was young, this love of exploring the world we live in and the extremes to which the human mind and body go motivates her in all she does.  Listen for more on what motivates her and how lockdown forced her to focus on just one goal - smashing the Bob Graham record. In a loop starting and finishing in Keswick in the Lake District, the 65 mile challenge involves running 42 fells with an 8,2000m ascent.   She finished the Bob Graham Round in 14 hours 34 minutes - taking 50 minutes off the previous best.
