When we talk about Mary we pay homage to the woman who gave birth to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the one who came as the Messiah to extend to us access to salvation. What we often take for granted is who Mary was as a believer and the evidence of who Mary was as a woman of God before becoming pregnant. Mary was committed and faithful to God and it showed apparent as the angel declared that God had blessed her. But the scripture said Mary was startled, even a little afraid by the presence of the angel.I imagine Mary to be a woman who knew scripture so she knew the story of an angel coming to Lot to forewarn him to leave the city before God annihilated it. She likely also knew the story of the angel coming to Daniel with an answer from God concerning his prayers. But the angel took the time to reiterate that God had shown her grace, assuring her that his presence was nothing for her to be afraid of.As the angel told her about the will and plans of God. Mary was inquisitive when she was told how she would be used to bring forth the son of God, she had no doubt this was a God thing and she was fully engaged and onboard.Despite, the rough road she knew she would have to bear, despite the oncoming discomfort, inconveniences, and ridicule she would face, Mary still chose to proclaim that she was up for the challenge of God using Her for His gloryLet's also be mindful that pregnancy in those days was not the easiest thing to bear. Women just imagine the painstaking chores women endured which required incredible physical demands, in high temperatures. Remember there was no air conditioning, no comfortable mattress to give a woman's back relief, not even gel insoles to soothe their feet. Then to add insult to injury, imagine a time when having a child outside of marriage was not popular, as a matter of fact, it was considered disgraceful and immoral, a woman who found herself in such a state was referred to as a lot of non-Sunday school words if you know what I mean. Notice in the opening passage of the story the angel says, “Greetings! The Lord has blessed you and is with you.” The angel proclamation indicated that at the time he came to her God had already blessed her, because God knew Mary's heart. And although Mary had the free will to deny to be used by God. God knew her character and her level of commitment, just like he knew Job's heart. And because of what He had already observed concerning her, He blessed her. In all honesty, she could have just dwelled in that blessed state and not taken on all the ridicule, gossip, and ugliness that would come with walking out the will of God. But imagine Mary knowing all of this was ahead of her, not to mention the first point of ridicule would come from the man she loved and was engaged to marry. Mary committed herself to the will and plans of God despite what folks would say, despite what they would think, even if it meant Joseph would walk away. Mary's faithfulness to God became real when she spoke the words “I am the servant of the Lord. Let this happen to me as you say!” Mary like each and every one of us today had access to free will, and the ability to guide her life according to her own will, her own desires, and her own plans, but despite the turbulent path ahead she chose to put the Kingdom of God first.
The Bible Has Always Been In Demand. Regardless of lingering opposition, disregard for scripture, and the lack of commitment to study from even amongst those who profess to be believers, there has always been and is a never-ending demand for the Bible. Because we measure success and status by numbers, dollars, and cents, let's review the numbers generated by The Holy Bible. The annual sales figures for the Bible average between $425 million and $650 million, repeatedly, year after year, it consistently dwarfs the sales of all other books. Because the Bible has always consistently been the bestselling book, it is no longer listed on the bestsellers list, as the “bestsellers” list is only interesting if the top spot is up for grabs, so the "real bestseller” has been indefinitely omitted from running. The Guinness Book of Records reports as of 2021 between 5 and 7 billion Bibles have been printed since 1815. According to Words Rated, an average of 20 million Bibles are sold each year with 1.66 million bibles sold each month. 384,615 bibles sold per week. 54,945 bibles are sold each and every day.Barna's research indicates that 92% of American households have at least one Bible and on average each has three. And the very popular YouVersion Bible app has reported over 500 million bibles have been downloaded just on their app since 2016 The Bible continues to embark on annual increasing sales and distribution totals, without any coercion. No government has ever required anyone to buy, own, read or believe in the Bible. Unbelievers are free to disagree with the Bible publicly. They can swear at GOD, find fault with the Bible, disagree with those who believe it and debate the issues all without any legal ramifications. The Bible's influence has always been implemented voluntarily. The same can't be said for Mao's book or the Qur'an. Mao's book is a book of quotations and statements from the speeches and writings of Mao Zedong, the former Chairman of the Communist Party of China. When this book came into print every home in China was legally required to have a copy and this regulation was enforced for many years. The penalty for not owning the book was severe and the Chinese population, being so large, accounts for several hundred million copies. The penalty for not owning a copy of Mao's book was still not as severe as the penalty for owning a Bible. One book was banned, the other lawfully required, however, despite the ban, Bible distribution is now catching up with Mao's books in China. Like Mao's book, the Qur'an's popularity is also the result of enforcement policies. It is used profoundly in the educational systems of Muslim countries. Based on its teachings, many cultures are shaped. In Muslim-dominated areas, the Qur'an also influences many areas of public life: what people wear, what they eat, and how they interact socially and politically. Some countries host contests to see who can quote the Qur'an verbatim. Christians in some Muslim countries are persecuted, beaten, and imprisoned regularly and conversion to Christianity is treated worse than murder. Amazingly enough, Mao's book of quotes and the Qur'an enjoy high print volumes due to political and cultural enforcements, and the Bible, which consistently, year after year, outsells any other book worldwide has never used force as a means of promotion.
Okay, the Moron doesn't seem so moronic in this episode… well, I do, but we really have some divine inspirations in this episode. My guest is a real live Seminarian in the Catholic Church. Yes, THE Catholic church, not one of the knock offs. He's been pursuing his coronation… that's not right… ordination! That's what I was looking for… This conversation is all over the place, and I have to take responsibility for that. If I get him back I really need to try and keep my questions more focused. And because we are so all over the place, this guy drops some people and terms this Moron had to look up, especially if you're not Catholic or are a heathen moron like myself. Among them: Exegesis - not exit, Jesus - this is e-x-e-g-e-s-i-s and it's a critical explanation or interpretation of a text. Traditionally, for work with religious texts, especially the Bible St. Ignatius of Loyola - who was a Spanish Catholic Priest and theologian that was one of the founders of the Society of Jesus otherwise known as… the Jesuits. We might have to do a separate episode on those guys. A St. Paul Moment - which is explained in the episode, but it's basically an epiphany or a “moment of awakening”... I don't like to gossip but apparently he heard the voice of Jesus and was immediately blinded for three days until a guy named a-nan-ias restored his sight and he was baptized. The 14 Discernments of Spirits - no it's not a way to make bourbon, it is the path to living a holy life. is the interpretation of what St. Ignatius of Loyola called the “motions of the soul.” These interior movements consist of thoughts, imaginings, emotions, inclinations, desires, feelings, repulsions, and attractions, what the Buddha might call cravings and aversions. Spiritual discernment of spirits involves becoming sensitive to these movements, reflecting on them, and understanding where they come from and where they lead us. Yes, I plagiarized this from a site called IgnatianSpirituality.com and there is a link at the bottom of the episode description. Towards the beginning of our conversation there is the mention of a code blue. A code blue at a hospital Usually means cardiac arrest (when the heart stops) or respiratory arrest (when breathing stops). You may say, what the hell is a chaplain doing anywhere near a patient experiencing cardiac arrest? Usually they are on the sidelines, staying out of the way. However if family members are present, we will get with them and suggest they stay out of the way and perhaps go to a more quiet area while the team does there work. It can be very traumatizing to watch a loved one receive treatment for cardiac arrest and while we can't make a family member leave, it's usually best to just get out of the way and let them do what they were trained to do. Our guest entered the seminary straight out of high school and mentions leaving the Central Valley, that would be the Central Valley of California which is comprised of a LOT of farmland and ranching. You hear about how much of our country's Fruits and veggies are grown here under normal circumstances so for all of the approximately 18,000 square miles of that valley, a lot of that are the same folks you'd meet in the Midwest. It looks like the Midwest and it has a lot of the same values as the Midwest despite the libby-McLibberson label that California has. So, that's what he's referring to when he mentions the Central Valley. Towards the end of our conversation we end up talking about Star Wars as my friend the Father-to-be is a science fiction fan and loves Star Wars. I ask about the possible parallels between the Jedi Knights and the path of a priest which he disagrees with completely and being that he has also studied Philosophy as part of a Priest's curriculum, I had to get out the dictionary again as he compares priests to stoicism. Stoicism is from the Greeks and was the belief that we don't react to events; we react to our judgments about them, and the judgments are up to us. They would advise that we should not worry about things beyond our control as everything in life can be divided into two categories – things that are up to us and things that are not. Then…THEN he brings up philosopher Nietzsche. Look, I can barely pronounce his name let alone discuss his philosophy. So Nietzsche is this fatalist philosopher that thinks in the end nothing matters and everything is pointless, like they teach on Sesame Street! So Nietzsche had this concept called The Will To Power, that our Seminarian brings up which is according to Wikipedia like self-determination, the concept of actualizing one's will onto one's self or one's surroundings, and coincides heavily with egoism. Egoism! There's something I get get behind. We begin our conversation as I ask him how his last overnight shift went at the hospital. So, I hope you find this conversation interesting and do not try to look up words while you're driving. Let me handle stuff like that. CLOSE - Wow… that did not sound like your typical conversation between two morons, right? A lot of very interesting stuff there, and sometimes I have to just lean hard on the old “God is Love” bumper sticker. Either I am in acceptance of that ideology, tweaked allover the place to make it fit for me, I'm not and if you're not, then best of luck to you and may your blood pressure remain forever low. But scientifically speaking, I think you might find that having a faith in something, you could use the word God for the sake of convenience, but not the baggage that you might believe that word comes with… having that sense of faith and finding comfort in it, will actually lower your blood pressure and can relieve stress. Not necessarily clinically proven, but there are studies that show benefits. There are two articles at the bottom of the description on this point from North Dakota State University and from Psychology Today Magazine. There is a benefit. Just try not to get hung up on nomenclature. Don't like the word God, don't use it. Don't like meditation? Try silent prayer. Many thanks and all the best to my guest, more to come and hopefully we will speak with him again! Take care, stay cool if you're where its hot, stay dry if you're where it's flooding, may the road rise to meet you rather than the ocean and thank you for listening to the Modern Moron. Acts chapter focuses on the boldness of the Apostles when faced with the Sadducee's persecution of their faith and their dismissal of the miracle that had taken place before their eyes. Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, pokes holes in their arguments to dismiss this event as false.
