In this episode, John is joined by James Blake to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘Playing Robots Into Heaven'. With the idea of simplifying his solo work primarily with synths and drums, James shares his process of crafting an album with the purpose of getting away from the computer, reflecting on the impact it had on his creativity and mental health. A true master of modular synths, he talks us through the long journey learning to create ‘listenable' music with them, discussing the ways in which they are able to create sounds that he couldn't have imagined.  Listen to discover the enlightening advice James received from Universal's Head A&R, how to best record your voice if you plan to pitch it, and how to adopt the mindset of making music for fun. Want to achieve your goals?  Don't listen to the marketers…We are continually bombarded by messages that to cater to, and encourage, our short attention span. There is no shortage of “life hacks,” quick-fix remedies, and promises of miraculous overnight success.  Like a blow from Thor's mighty hammer, we're led to expect quick resolution to our problems, and rapid attainment of our goals. But something I saw recently reminded me that most of that is not helpful.  When it comes to achieving your goals, there is a better approach you can employ. This may be best explained using an oddly shaped chunk of apple tree.Notes and Resources:Prefer to read?  Here's the full post:  Big Hammer or Small Blade? What it Really Takes to Achieve Your GoalsHere's a short video of craftsman Matt Jordan turning a burled apple tree limb into a beautiful coffee mug. Here's the slow motion video of what is really happening with every turn of the spindle, thanks to Bailey Woodworks. Here's a short description of the Habit Cycle and how you can use it to help you stick to your plan. For more skills to help you achieve your goals, be sure to check out my Goal Setting Mastery Course to help you build the habits that will turn your future into the one you envision. Quotable: “Progress is not measured in a few giant swings of a hammer but in thousands of little chips from a blade.”  - Ken Downer“Focus small instead of big.  Know that every tiny little bit matters, and all those little bits can add up to something amazing.”  - Ken Downer“Missing a day is like working with dull tools or a saw with missing teeth; it's going to take longer and the outcome may not be as good; steady persistence is a multiplier.”  - Ken Downer“One great workout will not win a race. 30-40 good workouts strung together in close proximity is what wins races!”  - Lionel Sanders, Professional TriathleteRelated posts: How to Communicate the Vision: Striking the Right Chord3 Ways to Keep Going When the Going Gets ToughWhy I Resolve to do Nothing Next Year

As CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, Chad Nelsen drops hammers on the people who tread on your surfing experience. And he's damn good at it. From saving Trestles, to stopping off-shore drilling to banning single-use plastic bags in California, Chad has directed Surfrider through their most successful year ever in 2016, with 60 coastal victories achieving outcomes such as stopping the flow of up to 240 million gallons of waste into Huntington Beach waters each day, and ending the way gambling boats used to dump 44 million gallons of waste into the sea each year in Florida. See, if you've ever ridden a wave in North America, there's a good chance the Surfrider Foundation has, at least in a small way, enabled your ability to enjoy whatever surf break you got wet at, and that's the reason we asked Chad to join us for this episode of The Wire - he is uncommonly good at organizing action and influencing change. This episode is both a mood enhancer and a how-to guide; listening to it will make you happy if you surf because we discuss the many ways surfers won in 2016 and the progress being made this year, and anyone in a non-profit or startup will benefit from Chad's perspective on everything from fundraising to spending funds effectively for maximum benefit. Please enjoy, and rate this podcast 5 stars if you want to make it easy for others to find, but of course, the choice is yours.

A new study suggests that even if there was liquid water on the surface of Mars billions of years ago, there wasn't enough atmospheric pressure to keep it liquid for long. The UK Government has stockpiled over £500m worth of the antiviral drug Tamiflu. A study now finds that the drug would have little to know effect on the spread of influenza or the duration of flu symptoms. According to medical journalist Ben Goldacre, this finding is symbolic of substantial transparency issues within the pharmaceutical industry. Ten world-class violinists tested expensive 'Old Italians' - Stradivarius and del Gesu violins - against modern, much cheaper instruments. The modern instruments were overwhelmingly preferred.

Pam asks: I really enjoy dry roasted, in the shell, unsalted peanuts. Do you know if microwaving the peanuts for a couple of minutes will eliminate the afflatoxin? In my response to Pam, I talk about Inner Circle Podcast #1 - Is Microwaving Food Bad? This is the form of flower pollen extract I recommend to Joe Joe asks: I've heard you tout the benefits of pollen extract paired with zinc for increasing testosterone levels. I went to my local health food store and couldn't find pollen extract. I did find Bee Pollen (nature's way brand). Is there an appreciable difference between the extract you suggest and the bee pollen that is readily available? Nicki asks: Today during the Tour of California coverage elliptical chain rings were brought up. Is there any benefit for triathlon? Will it help to save legs for run? Jeremy asks: I heard the Ben Greenfield podcast recently about colostrum so I ended up here: http://www.pacificfit.net/supplements.php#colostrum. My question is can you tell me why this product is better than, say, the Swanson vitamins brand? The one you recommend is from goats, and most others seem to be from cows. Also, it appears yours is almost 1500 mg  which is three times the 500 mg on the Swanson brand. Jackie asks: Hi Ben. I've heard chia seeds have all the essential omega-3/omega-6's. Is this true, and are they in the correct ratio? Can chia seeds replace fish oil as a vegetarian option? (And are they better to or comparable to flax seed?)   Mark asks: Just bought a new stationary bike trainer (with Power Meter) to add additional cross-training to my marathon training. Love the bike and the additional training at odd hours and bad weather is great. The problem I'm having is the toe clips (I think), I believe they are causing achilles pain that I feel when I run. The pain is real close to the heal. I switched shoes but that didn't make a difference. I lowered the saddle that didn't make a difference. I've decided to remove the toe clips next. Any ideas that might help? hksparky asks: As I've learned we train at the top of the Fat Burning Zone in order to teach our bodies how to burn fat. (1) Why bother teaching our bodies that when we race well into our Carb Burning zone? What race benefits do I get if my body will never see that low HR in a race? (2) Is it possible to train my body so that the top of my Fat Burning HR zone allows me to run at my race pace? (3) When you run your 1:30 Half Marathon in the Half Ironman's are you burning predominately Fat? Paul asks: I am planning on running a 50 mile ultramarathon. My question is what type of training would your recommend. I would think 5 days of running per week with some type of interval/hill work each week, but not sure. Also with high running mileage I assume that cross training would be minimal? Paul asks: I had something really strange happen to me after a race recently. After completing a 14 mile trail race, I took a seat. When I stood back up and reached down for my water, I got this crazy taste in my mouth. To me it tasted like my fillings. My hands also seemed to tingle. It lasted about a minute or two. Granted, I was a bit undertrained, and probably a bit dehydrated, but never had this happen before. So far, the most distant listener of Murphy's Saloon is in Singapore, while the listener who lives the furthest north resides in the Shetland Islands of the United Kingdom (he's a new listener, too). Do I have any listeners in Africa, South America or central Asia? I dunno - but if you live in those places and listen to Murphy's Saloon, please put a pin in the map.
