On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Zoe Booth and Iona Italia. Booth is community engagement officer and Italia is managing editor at Quillette. An Australian, Booth has degrees in French, Politics and Law from the University of Newcastle. Italia is an erstwhile academic of British nationality and mixed Parsi and Scottish heritage, with a Ph.D. in English literature from Cambridge University. She is the author of Our Tango World, former editor-in-chief of Areo Magazine and the host of the Two for Tea Podcast. Razib discusses both of their trajectories into the heterodox intellectual sphere, Booth, from her starting point as a younger Millennial and Italia as a member of Generation X. While Booth recounts she had typical generational views on social justice and left-inflected politics, Italia admits despite being very left-wing most of her life she was never very well disposed to the identitarian trend that has crystallized into “woke” politics in the 2020s. Booth also addresses the reality that even if the existence of Quillette, a female-led bastion of free thought, with founding editor Claire Lehmann and now managing editor Italia might seem to suggest otherwise, it is not always easy to be a heterodox woman. Booth and Italia discuss how female personality orientation tends more toward making people feel comfortable and included rather than confrontations over truth claims that might hurt feelings. Italia and Razib also address her unique personality quirk of very high disagreeability, which might explain both her rejection of group-think and her earnest quest for the truth as she understands it. Booth and Italia talk about how the recent events around the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, have resulted in changes in their social life due to political polarization. Overall Quillette has taken a pro-Israel position across the editorial staff, which has resulted in some blowback among their readership. Italia also talks about her own change from solidarity to the global left because of their Hamas-friendly stance, and her continued rejection of conservative social movements, including Islam. Booth and Italia also address Quillette's consistent trend of touching cultural and political third rails, but in the service of classical liberal values. Italia believes any blowback toward her and the magazine comes disproportionately from a small group of malcontents, and that broadly liberal values are much more popular than most people realize.
Find out why Iona and Zoe hated the new Barbie movie. Iona Italia is an associate editor at Quillette. She is also the editor of Areo Magazine and host of the Two for Tea podcast. She writes for Substack at The Second Swim. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
When is a certain speech act an opinion versus a call to action? Does that distinction matter for censorship purposes? Why does it seem that human behavior tends towards censorship rather than towards freedom of expression? Is feeling emotionally or politically harmed a valid reason for censoring certain speech acts? Will it always be the case that, given enough time, truth will win out over ignorance, bullshit, misinformation, and lies? What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for creating a society in which truth wins at the end of the day? Why are citizens so often attracted to populist and/or fascist ideologies and political parties? What value does religion provide to a society?Iona Italia is the editor-in-chief of Areo Magazine and the host of its Two for Tea podcast. Iona is the author of two books: Anxious Employment (a study of eighteenth-century essayists) and Our Tango World (sociological and philosophical musings on dance and life). She holds a PhD in English Literature from Cambridge University and publishes weekly creative non-fiction pieces on her Substack, The Second Swim. Her background includes a decade in academe and a 12-year career as a tango dancer and teacher. Iona lives in London with four old friends. She loves dancing, running, choral singing, chess, dogs, and sci-fi.[Read more]
By most objective measures, the Covid pandemic is over. Because of impressively rapid technological innovations, most people are now able to easily manage risks to their health posed by the virus. But not everyone agrees that this means the pandemic is over. Some argue that as long as even a handful of high-risk individuals are threatened by Covid, we should not think it proper to resume normal life. What ideas are responsible for this approach to the ethics of infectious disease? What attitude does it betray toward healthy people and toward the innovations that allow us to preserve and perfect it? What has been the impact of this approach? By contrast, what is a rational approach to the ethics of infectious disease? Join Ben Bayer as he interviews Dr. Amesh Adalja to discuss these and other issues addressed by a recent article by Adalja in Areo Magazine.
Angel Eduardo (http://angeleduardo.com/) is a writer, musician, photographer, and designer based in New York City, who serves an Advisory Board member, FAIR in the Arts Fellow, and Director of Messaging & Editorial for the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism (FAIR - https://www.fairforall.org/), where he helps shape the organization's pro-human approach to our often contentious and divided discourse. He is also a contributor to the Center for Inquiry's blog, where he writes on science, communication, skepticism, and morality for a column entitled Searching for Better Angels, and is best-known for coining and promoting the rhetorical concept of star-manning. Angel holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from CUNY Hunter College, and has had writing featured in Newsweek, Areo Magazine, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood, and The Caribbean Writer, among other print and online publications. Angel's photographs have been featured in various exhibitions and used as cover art for books—most notably in Personal Effects: Essays on Memoir, Teaching and Culture in the Work of Louise DeSalvo for Fordham University Press, which makes use of his photograph, “Early Bird.” Angel has been writing, performing, and recording music since the age of 15, and has been intimately involved in every creative facet of his projects, from songwriting, producing, mixing, and mastering, to designing and overseeing the creation of album artwork, concert posters, and merchandise. Be it with music, writing, photography, or design, Angel is an artist inspired to inspire. His hope is to pay it forward—providing others with the same solace, inspiration, perspective, and opportunity for personal and intellectual growth that the work of others has done for him. In the social realm, Angel advocates for a compassionate, honest, and civil approach to discourse, even when we're incentivized to bare our teeth and dig in our heels. Through his work he hopes to foster more productive conversations on the topics of the day, all bolstered by his own six words of advice: Be kind; we're all first drafts.
In this pre-season special which will also act as S3E1, Daniel Sharp of Areo Magazine and I discuss the recent attack and attempted murder of Salman Rushdie and the importance and value of free speech in a free and open society, the current attempts once again to censor free speech, the voices of dissent within groups and society, progress and free expression, and the racism of low expectations. All this and more on MOI ! Thanks, Daniel!

Wokery within Alan's own discipline of music. 11:45 What is going wrong in Australian universities? The example of implicit bias training, based on the discredited implicit association test, being used in higher education. 16:02 Cultish mindsets in academia and the discouragement of scepticism. 18:25 The corporatisation and marketisation of academia. The “perfect storm”: the combination of identity politics and brand/risk-aware corporatisation in academia. 22:12 How is the culture of diversity training affecting universities? 26:30 Is testing for implicit bias simply workplace totalitarianism? The ‘who you are' over ‘what you do/say' mindset. Clumsy and counterproductive attempts to measure injustice and “redress the balance.” ‘Representation' in music, particularly orchestral music. Does dealing with economic inequalities earlier in the ‘pipeline' matter more? 40:30 Socioeconomic and cultural factors in inequalities. 44:25 Discussions of Alan's evolutionary psychological/memetic approaches to understanding the success and influence of postmodern critical theory and Iona's view that tribalism is a universal heuristic, including in the ‘anti-woke' circle. Alan: “Resist the heuristic!” The risk of orthodoxy taking over. 1:00:46 What universities should be and the decline of public trust in higher education. Alan's defence of universities. What are the risks to universities? 1:11:00 How has the atmosphere on campus changed since Alan began his academic career? 1:12:10 Last words and outro.
TLYG talks to thought leader and writer, Salomé Sibonex, about the growing authoritarianism taking place in governments and populations around the world in the time of Covid19. She argues that authoritarianism has been growing since the invention of social media, coming from self-censorship and shutting down of our ideological opposites taking place online and now spreading to our institutions. Salomé Sibonex is a writer and artist known for her distinct style of truth-telling, melding philosophy and psychology to diagnose modern issues. She's written for Areo Magazine, writes the cult-favorite newsletter Spiritual Soap, and examines film as modern mythology on her podcast, the Silver Eye Society. Yes, we're back with Jimmy Concepts, reliable source of dishonest idiocy. This time, as a kind of 'bonus feature' to our last episode, Daniel reads out a representative selection of reviewer comments on some of the fake papers submitted to academic journals by Lindsay, Pluckrose and Boghossian during the so-called 'Sokal Squared' prank. It's very revealing... albeit of something we already knew: namely that Lindsay and his cohorts are absolutely full of shit. Content Warnings. "BJ-Gay" reviewer's comment: - This paper claims to apply a combination of psychoanalysis and feminism to examine and critique styles of masculinity evident within grappling-based martial arts subcultures. Overall, I found the paper very difficult to read and cannot recommend it for publication. This is due to a combination of factors, namely: - A densely theoretical, often confusing style of prose in many parts of the paper; - An inconsistent application of theoretical concepts, most of which were not defined with any clarity for the reader; - Overuse of certain source material, as well as a fairly consistent tendency to misuse sources in support of claims that the papers/books in question do not actually support; - Many sweeping generalizations about (all) men involved in (all) grappling-based martial arts; - A tokenistic inclusion of discussions of women in these spaces, which was not reconciled with the analysis in any meaningful way; - A central thesis which is not, to my knowledge, supported by any of the empirical research in this area (despite the fact that several such studies were cited in the paper); - Bizarre, even farcical concluding recommendations which indicate a lack of knowledge about the martial arts in question, as well as a tenuous and selective grasp of feminism as applied to sport. - There is simply too much wrong with the paper to offer a more robust criticism as a reviewer. I recommend that the author spends far more time acquainting themselves with both the theoretical and empirical literature at the intersection of sport, martial arts and masculinity studies before attempting a re-write. The current offering sits far short of the standards of scholarship expected of academic publication, particularly in a journal such as Men and Masculinities. https://twitter.com/deonteleologist/status/1444709707864674306 https://twitter.com/deonteleologist/status/1402338497617285120 "The Joke's On You" reviewer comment: - Another sign of lack of integration is that there is not clear definition of the comedic. The very first paragraph offers one too narrow for the essay. Northrup Frye provides some useful definitions of irony, parody, and satire in his classic work, Anatomy of Criticism. Note, too, that Cynthia Willett, in Irony in the Age of Empire, shares a similar thesis with this essay, namely that irony works against arrogance and ignorance. That source should be acknowledged even as the author discusses her own different approach, and might help the author clarify definitions of the comedic and integrate argument. - Yet another sign of lack of integration are the mixed references from Oliver to Dotson, Bailey, et al.-- Oliver would support a strong postmodern or poststructuralist stance that would render claims to speak "truth" to power finally ironic or that would yield to a very serious act of witnessing alterity. The latter group of epistemologists (including Dotson and Bailey) seem to affirm a pluralism but also a truth that allows for objective claims. Humor that makes use of the latter approach would typically tend toward satire, not irony. Satire and irony just do not function the same way, and the author would want to decide which direction or use of them would most assist the argument. "Fat Body Builders" reviewer comment: - For instance, statements like these, “In order for fat to be seen as ordinary and familiar, we need to insert ourselves in the extraordinary and unfamiliar. Competitive bodybuilding venues may be unfamiliar, even intrinsically fat-exclusionary, but this can change” and “Though it goes beyond the scope of this paper to provide more specific methods for institutionalizing fat bodybuilding” illustrate the issue with the paper. The author has highlighted the negative implication of fat stigma, but with a lack of connection to implementation, it negates the reason for why fat bodybuilding is a solution over other means or methods. - This reader would encourage the author to improve the connection between fat bodybuilding and its role as a means of fat activism. The author certainly has a wealth of information about the field of bodybuilding and the author should use that experience to strengthen the connections mentioned previously. "Hooters" reviewer comment: - This then takes me to a core challenge in moving forward with your paper at Sex Roles: trustworthiness. All three reviewers share my concern about the lack of demonstrated methodological integrity in the present paper. This is where Reviewer 3 comes in. I recruited Reviewer 3 after the other reviewers, and because she is a member of our in-house staff, I shared both reviewers' (masked) comments with her. I asked her first if she felt there was enough evidence of rigor to pursue a revision. Because we (at this point) have incomplete methodological information, I cannot commit to making a positive judgment here, but I am committing to giving it a try. - Thus my second challenge to Reviewer 3 was to outline what next steps you will need to take (in addition to addressing the other reviewers' comments) to fill in these methodological gaps. As you can see from Reviewer 3's comments, this starts by laying out your procedural details and analytic strategy. My guess is that you will need to focus more specifically on theme development and justification (e.g., thematic analysis) rather than taking this aspect from grounded theory (in that your goal is not to develop theory). I have attached a recently published paper in Sex Roles by Sheryl Chatfield that lays out various approaches to qualitative methodologies and outlines our standards here at Sex Roles. My expectation is that Reviewer 3's comments and this paper will help you address this critical point, as well as to move one from there to fully flesh out your methods, analyses, and findings. "Dildos" reviewer comment: - In the opening sections, the author notes that "though Allan lays out psychoanalytic theoretical considerations that are strongly suggestive of the co-constitutive relationship between masculinity, thevariables listed above, and anality, currently there is no scholarly literature that engages the topic of straight male penetrative sex toy directly and substantively" (3). The author here is referring to Allan's article, "Phallic Affect," however, Allan's book, Reading from Behind: A Cultural Analysis of the Anus (2016) might prove to be more useful in the context of this study. - The author writes that "there exists a far more extensive and applicable treatment in the book, The Ultimate Guide to Prostate Pleasure, but unfortunately this insightful volumes falls considerably outside of the scholarly academic canon" (3). I'm not certain that this is a problem, perhaps this is a difference of approach, but it seems to me that sex manuals are highly valuable resources in scholarly work and if there is a problem that the problem rests not with The Ultimate Guide but the Academy's inability to imagine value outside of itself. Indeed, the author might consider expanding this to include books like, The Adventurous Couple's Guide to Strap-On Sex by Violet Blue. Nestor de Buen, Anti-Science Humping in the Dog Park. https://conceptualdisinformation.substack.com/p/anti-science-humping-in-the-dog-park "What is even more striking is that if the research had actually been conducted and the results showed what the paper says they show, there is absolutely no reason why it should not have been published. And moreover, what it proves is the opposite of what its intention is. It shows that one can make scientifically testable claims based on the conceptual framework of gender studies, and that the field has all the markings of a perfectly functional research programme." "Yes, the dog park paper is based on false data and, like Sokal's, contains a lot of unnecessary jargon, but it is not nonsense, and the distinction is far from trivial. Nonsense implies one cannot even obtain a truth value from a proposition. In fact, the paper being false, if anything, proves that it is not nonsense, yet the grievance hoaxers try to pass falsity as nonsense. Nonsense is something like Chomsky's famous sentence “colorless green ideas sleep furiously.” It is nonsense because it is impossible to decide how one might evaluate whether it is true. A false sentence would be “the moon is cubical.” It has a definite meaning, it just happens not to be true. "So, if the original Sokal Hoax is like Chomsky's sentence, the dog park paper is much more like “the moon is cubical.” And in fact, a more accurate analogy would be “the moon is cubical and here is a picture that proves it,” and an attached doctored picture of the cubical moon." Reviewer 2 Comments on the Dog-Park Paper "I am a bit curious about your methodology. Can you say more? You describe your methods here (procedures for collecting data), but not really your overall approach to methodology. Did you just show up, observe, write copious notes, talk to people when necessary, and then leave? If so, it might be helpful to explicitly state this. It sounds to me like you did a kind of ethnography (methodology — maybe multispecies ethnography?) but that's not entirely clear here. In many ways, this exciting discussion encapsulates why I started this podcast, living at the nexus of Art, Culture, and Society; it also serves as an example of the perils of ignoring Art and Artists in our ever-escalating "Culture Wars", as many have seen fit to do--unless they are complaining about how bad our Art has gotten.A Cuban-American whose mother experienced the ravages of Communism firsthand, the fiery and vivacious Salomé Sibonex deeply understands the corrosive effect of the authoritarian impulse on creative expression. She is a writer and artist known for her distinct style of truth-telling, melding philosophy and psychology to diagnose modern issues. She's written for Areo Magazine, writes the cult-favorite newsletter "Weird & Güd", and examines film as modern mythology on her podcast, The Silver Eye Society, and you can find her on Twitter and Instagram via @SalomeSibonex.
So, in rank defiance of our recent promise to 'get back to the nazis' instead we continue our James Lindsay coverage. (What... me? Irony? How dare you?) This time, Daniel patiently walks a distracted, slightly hyperactive, and increasingly incredulous Jack through the infamous 'Grievance Studies Hoax' (AKA 'Sokal Squared') in which Lindsay and colleagues Helen Pluckrose and Peter Boghossian tried (and then claimed) to prove something or other about modern Humanities academia by submitting a load of stupid fake papers to various feminist and fat studies journals. As Daniel reveals, the episode was an orgy of dishonesty and tactical point-missing that actually proved the opposite of what the team of snickering tricksters thought they were proving. Sadly, however, because we live in Hell, the trio have only raised their profiles as a result. A particular highlight of the episode is Lindsay revealing his staggering ignorance when 'responding' to criticism. Content warnings, as ever. Have you ever had a conversation with someone and came away thinking, if the world had more thinkers such as this, the world would be a much calmer and better place for everyone? The deep thinker I'm talking about is Angel Eduardo and I'm grateful this week for having the opportunity to speak with Angel on the Derate the Hate podcast.I recently read a piece by Angel published in Newsweek, “Stop calling me “white” for having the wrong opinions”, which stood out to me as something that seems to happen with much greater frequency these days. It seems if people of color don't have the “correct” ideas or opinions, they are said to be “acting white” or called “white” as a pejorative. This is not only a disgusting form of racism and bullying, but it's a nonsensical attempt by some to keep us divided. Angel has more than a little to say about this so you're not going to want to miss this conversation!Who is Angel Eduardo?Angel Eduardo is a writer, musician, photographer, and designer based in New York City. Ever since the United States ceased to be a colony of the British Empire, immigration has been used as a tool of the ruling class to relegate labor. While xenophobic fears may ignite passionate debate, capitalism is the driving factor in the bipartisan draconian immigration legislation we see to this day. We'll discuss capitalism's role in the United States southern border policy and more. About Daniel: Daniel is an attorney and social critic who grew up in diverse cultural and political settings. His experience includes immigration law where he became an ally to progressive movements and organizations seeking migrant liberation. He has several essays published in Areo Magazine and Medium and he currently labors in the public sector to ensure migrant access to justice. He is the son of an immigrant and spent his adolescence with his parents and three brothers in the Dominican Republic. He and his family live in the American southeast. TELEMEDICINE CONSULTS WITH ME (EVEN IF YOU DONT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE): wellspringcare.org WELCOME TO EPISODE 13 OF BEST MEDICINE Each week, I dive in deep with experts from different industries to pull out the best ideas about how we may heal and strengthen our selves and our world. ✍ABOUT IONA ITALIA:
Angel Eduardo is a writer, musician and visual artist based in New York City. Last summer, he wrote an article that appeared in Areo Magazine called I'm a Nobody, The Harper's Letter Was For Me The now-infamous Open Letter on Justice and Debate published in Harper's Magazine, addressed a climate of growing intolerance for ideological diversity and was signed by more than 150 prominent artists and intellectuals. Among the criticisms of the so-called "Harper's Letter" was that it amounted to a bunch of elitists whining about having their voices muted by the democratization of opinion. But Angel, a 35-year-old millennial with immigrant parents, a day job and a fledgling artistic career, saw things differently. In this conversation, Angel talks with Meghan about why he wrote the article, why the new leftist groupthink reminds him of his own religious upbringing, why he thinks fetishizing the n-word does more to incite racism than fight it. He also explains a rhetorical concept he's come up with called "star-manning." Guest Bio: Angel Eduardo is a musician, photographer, and designer based in New York City. He is a staff writer and content creator for Idealist and contributes a monthly column for the Center for Inquiry called Searching for Better Angels. Learn more about him, see his visual art and hear his music on his official website, angeleduardo.com.

A recording of an Academy of Ideas Lockdown Debate on Tuesday 11 August 2020: www.academyofideas.org.uk/events/archive/can_we_cancel_cancel_culture Donate to the Academy of Ideas: www.academyofideas.org.uk/donate ‘Cancel culture’ has recently become a ubiquitous term, used widely to describe apparently new assaults on freedom of expression and belief. This seems to go beyond free-speech controversies around no-platforming and involves demands ‘to punish and also banish from the community a respectable opinion’. When Harper’s Magazine published a joint letter from 153 prominent writers, academics and entertainers - across ideologies, ethnicities, religions and sexual preferences - it expressed concern that ‘the free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted’. The letter itself has proven to be hugely controversial, and has led to a vociferous denial that cancel culture even exists. Critics claim that powerful people with large followings are complaining about censorship, when the reality is that newly empowered activists are merely holding them to account, whether it is writer JK Rowling or grime artist Wiley. Nesrine Malik, a Guardian columnist, writes that such well-known figures are not used to having their views challenged and have ‘confused a lack of reverence from people who are able to air their views for the very first time with an attack on their right to free speech’. Her fellow Guardian columnist, Zoe Williams, says the Harpers letter is a ‘coded attack on marginalised minorities for having the gall to criticise people with power and platforms’. In other words, freedom of speech can’t be freedom from consequences, and when people argue that certain views and opinions make you unfit for a certain job, that’s just more freedom of speech. But how then do we explain that often those most fearful of being cancelled themselves lack power, especially in the workplace? The Harpers letter was a response to an upsurge of sackings, resignations and public shamings over allegedly harmful words, deeds, opinions, often as a result of ‘institutional leaders, in a spirit of panicked damage control… delivering hasty and disproportionate punishments’. Examples abound of employees falling foul of overzealous HR departments for having the ‘wrong’ responses to diversity initiatives. Many ‘ordinary people’, therefore, are understandably fearful of the consequences of not signing up to a range of ‘correct’ views, especially those views associated with Black Lives Matter. Even the wisdom of debating such issues is now being questioned. Labour MP Nadia Whittome attracted controversy when she tweeted: ‘We must not fetishise “debate” as though debate is itself an innocuous, neutral act. The very act of debate in these cases is an effective rollback of assumed equality and a foot in the door for doubt and hatred.’ What is to be done and how should people respond in such a climate? Is cancel culture leading to greater self-censorship and stifling open debate? Or are we just seeing a new generation who have found their voice? Indeed, some suggest that marginalising unpleasant and offensive people – not doing business with them, not giving them a platform, not employing them in your business – is an entirely reasonable, personal decision. When do such actions become a systematic marginalisation of certain views – and what’s wrong with marginalising repulsive views anyway? Many seem eager to ‘fight fire with fire’ – calling out the double standards of their opponents in a tit-for-tat round of cancellations – but how can we expect that to lead to a greater range of opinion and debate? Perhaps we need to ask a fundamental question: what does it mean to live in a genuinely tolerant democracy? SPEAKER(S): Nick Buckley - MBE founder and CEO, Mancunian Way charity; social commentator and activist Alex Deane - partner at a large City consultancy; regular political commentator in the media; founding director; Big Brother Watch; previously elected common councilman, City of London Corporation; author and editor, most recently of Big Brother Watch: The state of civil liberties in modern Britain Claire Fox - director, Academy of Ideas; author, I STILL Find That Offensive!
