Today, Commander Divine speaks with Simon Drew, a multi-talented philosopher, poet, pianist, podcaster, and didgeridoo player. In his latest book, The Poet and the Sage, Simon digs deep into philosophy, mysticism, and metaphor. In this episode, Simon discusses his creative process, how philosophy and art are intertwined, and how to achieve enlightenment by playing the didgeridoo. Key Takeaways: Life is about asking better questions. Simon believes that life is a game with an objective, but it's up to us to ask the right questions to know what that objective is and how to seek it out. It's crucial to strengthen our questioning ability and face life with the degree of seriousness it deserves… and then being willing to hear the answers when we ask the questions. Not everybody is built as an artist. Simon says that inspiration typically hits him just a few minutes before he starts his writing routine, and it almost always comes to him easily and naturally. He says that the artistic experience is something that many people just don't necessarily have access to – not because some people are superior and others are inferior, but because not everybody is built as an artist. Different art forms play different roles. Simon plays music, writes poetry, and hosts a podcast because all of these mediums allow for completely different forms of expression. One format may get across to people in different ways that aren't possible with another medium. Practice “Po.” Simon talked about a beautiful principle called “po,” which means to sit with a question once it's posited, rather than trying to answer it immediately. Simon hopes that when people read poetry, they will sit with the question in the poem and allow it space to seep into the mind, body, and soul… and see what happens. Between two worlds. The stoic definition of wisdom is “a knowledge of things human and divine.” Since we are strange beings stretched between the heights and the depths, Simon asks: How much could you truly contribute in life if you became highly skilled at living between those two worlds?

In particular, the divine element in ancient Stoicism, which was central, has not been discarded by everyone involved in the recent Stoic revival. In this conversation, we talk about Stoicism, the Logos, the cosmos, Christianity, and the spiritual path of Dante's Divine Comedy. In episode 115 of Live Authentically, we are joined by an inspirational guest from Australia, Simon Drew. Simon characterizes himself as a poet, musician and philosopher. However, Simon reaches far beyond those labels as he helps people truly understand themselves through mentorships and his book, The Poet & The Sage– “a work born of the mystic tradition and delivered through the art of poetry and prose.” Throughout this episode, Simon and Pamela venture into many topics, including self-discovery, applying labels upon yourself, and more. Yet, before any of that, Pamela asks the question we love most, “How do you live authentically?”Simon says that it would be tough to answer such a good question without going on too long. Still, he does his best. Simon says, “The most helpful thing that I ever did to at least begin on the road towards some sort of authenticity was actually to assume that I perhaps didn't know what it would mean to live authentically. To assume that perhaps there were parts of myself that I did not yet fully awaken. [...] And then to go on the adventure of freely exploring who I could be if I was truly living authentically.”With such an insightful answer given, it leads Pamela and Simon to start discussing his book in more detail. He tells us what the creation of his book genuinely meant to him– beyond what you might be able to see on the surface level. And he gives us some insight into the journey he was taken on while weaving those pages together, revealing a lot about himself and how he chooses to live authentically. Simon and Pamela go on to discuss the process of opening the flood gates of creativity and stepping into who you are as a person. In addition to the importance of understanding the labels placed on us, either by ourselves or others. They then delve into other conversations about sitting in the theater of life and embodying stoicism. Later, towards the end of the episode, Simon gives us some real-world advice on living an examined life that even Socrates would endorse. If you want to hear the other conversations that Simon and Pamela had throughout this episode and more about the topics that we've mentioned, please watch this episode in its entirety! You can also catch up on everything that Simon Drew offers by visiting The Walled Garden, where you can find The Walled Garden podcast, information about the cofounders of the garden and find his book The Poet & The Sage.

About Jonathan Church: Jonathan Church is an economist with two decades of experience working in the private and public sectors. His professional background is in antitrust, intellectual property, valuation, inflation, index number theory, statistics, and finance. In 2016, he began writing a weekly column for The Good Men Project, with a focus on current affairs, social justice, and masculinity. In 2018, he was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumor, which led not only to brain surgery and radiation, but also a decision to pursue his passion for writing and scholarship without restraint. Outside of his day job and time with his daughter, he spends most of his remaining time as an independent scholar writing on economics, finance, and social justice. He has been published in Quillette, Areo Magazine, Arc Digital, The Agonist Journal, Merion West, The Good Men Project, Culturico, New Discourses, The Washington Examiner, The Daily Stoic, and The Federalist. He has also published poetry in Lummox, Big Hammer, and Street Value, as well as short stories in Vending Machine Press and The Agonist Journal. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in economics and philosophy, and from Cornell University with an M.A in economics. He is also a CFA charter holder. Any time left over is spent exercising and playing chess.  The Walled Garden is a podcast and community of independent philosophers and seekers who are dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, virtue, and the divine. Led by Australian poet, philosopher, and musician Simon Drew, American philosopher, author, and speaker Sharon Lebell, and British philosopher and researcher Kai Whiting, The Walled Garden hosts regular live events and meetups with fascinating philosophers, theologians, artists, leaders, and seekers who can teach us all about how to live a flourishing existence. This is a conversation between Sharon Lebell, Peter Samis, and Simon Drew with a wide-ranging pool of topics, including being, forms, art, language, enlightenment, philosophy, and the importance of both reverence and irreverence. About Peter Samis (in his own words): My book "Creating the Visitor-centered Museum," co-authored with Mimi Michaelson, was published by Routledge in 2017. It documents innovative practices in museum interpretation through ten case study sites in the United States and Europe. I have spoken about it in China, the United States, and Italy over the past year and am happy to convey its messages to others. I am grateful to have worked at SFMOMA in a variety of capacities, paid and volunteer, for 35 years; my final position was Assoc. Curator of Interpretation. My initial studies at Columbia and in Paris were in anthropology and religion. Later, I went on to earn an M.A. in art history at U.C. Berkeley. Since then I have taught, curated, written, and been active in the development of interpretive technologies for cultural heritage. Way back in the 1990s, I served as the art historian/content expert for the first CD-ROM on modern art, "American Visions," and then spearheaded development of multimedia programs for SFMOMA's new building, which opened in 1995. Over the years, SFMOMA's Interactive Educational Technology programs received awards from sources as diverse as the American Association of Museums, the Webbys, Communication Arts, and I.D. Magazine. I taught for many years in the graduate program for Technology-Enhanced Communication for Cultural Heritage at Switzerland's University of Lugano, and served on advisory councils for many open source software initiatives. But around 2007, I realized that digital interpretation was not enough, and that visitors benefited most from a mix of analog and digital, interactive and environmental. That led to the research with Mimi Michaelson and our book. We discovered that as museums become more visitor-centered, hierarchies are dismantled and new teams emerge. We begin to listen to visitor feedback, and empathy builds. It turns out that "Nothing about us without us," that mantra of inclusive practice, counts for visitors, too! I am joined in conversation with Australia poet, philosopher, musician and Podcaster Simon Drew.  Simon and I began speaking in regards to the promotion of his new book The Poet and the Sage.  Simon shares two beautiful readings with us from the book.We cover some of Simon's work, I share some of my own and we discuss the experience and the calling that leads us through journeys of awakening and the paradox of simultaneous blessings and burdens one is asked to assume along the way.Simon and I have significant overlap and convergence in our areas of vocation, namely Poetry and Philosophy, and some interesting areas of digression namely academia and theology, but as you will tell, Simon has a humility around submitting himself to the process of a masters degree through academia, finding ways to challenge the limitations and find the room for creative expression within those boundaries.  As you will tell Simon has developed his previous intuitions very much within the context of Christianity, but again, as you will hear he has the heart and the mind to plumb the universal essence of that wisdom, and diplomatically but earnestly sidestep the dogma and haughtiness that usually typifies the Christian domain.Simon's Podcast: The Walled Gardeninfo@eyeswideopenlife.org

Today I had the opportunity to speak with podcast host, life coach, writer, and musician, Simon Drew. Our culture is heavily influenced by the various voices which dominate social and mainstream media, and when someone like Jordan Peterson speaks or says something that questions or even goes against the mainstream “gospel” so to speak, people lose their minds and all hell breaks loose. “You should conceptualize the highest possible good that you can conceive of that would be good for you, your family, your community, your country, your world. And then you should aim at that highest possible good because what have you got to do that’s better than that?” 14:44. We talk about why someone might still choose to do good even after leaving religion or the idea of God/an afterlife. Looking at Simon’s journey 5:07 The great thing about this culture 10:42 Something Jordan Peterson said that set Simon on a different course 14:44 Purpose 20:21 What keeps people good 34:46 Being at peace 39:23 Helping people to pay attention and ask the right questions 45:58 What Simon wants people to remember about him 51:31 Simon’s podcast 56:20 “I find it very comforting to constantly have that reassurance that I might also be on the wrong path and am likely on the wrong path, but that’s OK because the wrong path becomes the right path as long as we persist in seeking whatever is best.” 11:41 https://dailystoic.com/ https://www.simonjedrew.com/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
