After at least a 16 hour flight with his two-year-old twin toddlers, and a pit stop in LA to accept the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award on behalf of the Maui community at the ESPYs, Kai joins the Lineup with Dave to discuss season 4 of his biopic with Red Bull, Life of Kai. He explains his strongest gut feeling he's ever had to wear a helmet at Pipe, the very same helmet that ended up saving his life earlier this year. Kai dives deeper into his injuries, the importance of taking tabs on your mental health, and one of the most bizarre micro concussions he's ever experienced after a wipeout at Jaws in 2018. He and Dave muse over the big wave pioneers, like Shane Dorian, Ian Walsh, and Laird Hamilton, and how their contributions to the sport helped pave the road for the next generation to become even better than their predecessors. He also talks about how being a father makes him more calculated about when he decides to paddle out into big waves, the importance of confidence, and how that is the true talent of every champion in every sport. 805 Beer Authentico, Lakey Peterson, joins the Cold Beer Surf Club. After just barely missing the cut on the CT this year, Lakey cruised up to WSL HQ in El Segundo, CA to catch up with Conner. They reflect on growing up in the 805 and Lakey's decision to move down to San Clemente. Catching up with the Stoked Bloke (Barton Lynch) in the New Earth Project Pipeline Studios on the North Shore of Oahu. After two months of travel there is much to catch up on. Barton was on assignment as the announcer at the ISA World Games in El Salvador and also the US Boardriders Championships at Trestles in Southern California. Nobody has reported on more World Title Showdowns than 23-time Gold Cone Piece Award Winner Nick Carroll (of House Frotherian). He was at Waikiki in 1914 when Duke Kahanamoku flogged Tom Blake's much loathed kook-box design on nothing but a piece of driftwood. He was at Manly in 64 when Phyllis O'Donnel and Midget shoved it fair up the seppo blow-ins to record the first "official" global championships. He saw the Wounded Gull steal everyone's chippies for four years straight, watched Layne and then Steph win 7 a piece, he sniffed the blood on the sand at Backdoor at the height of the Slater/AI war of 03, and he even watched his younger bruv, Sir Thomas Victor, throw away the un-losable crown in 88. World No. 3 Tatiana Weston-Webb joins the podcast before she competes for the World Title at the Rip Curl WSL Finals. 2021 Rip Curl WSL Final 5 competitor, Santa Barbara torchbearer, and one of the most powerful surfers in the world Conner Coffin returns to the podcast to talk about his past year.
