This year, KBIS brought a whole new energy. This new energy and vibe was brought on by a number of issues on the minds of both design creatives, their clients and the brands that hope to be included in future projects. I think it was also fueled by a discomfort. One that many if not most of us are feeling by the political chaos created by this new administration. Now listen, before you get tribal on me, hear me out. Regardless for whom you voted, when a new administration comes in, they get to make the changes they see fit. And it doesn't really matter if you agree or disagree, it is a fact of life and elections have consequences. That was the topic of discussion that elevated above all others and I believe that this discomfort being felt has motivated many creatives to reengage in their business and recommit to to their craft despite the head winds headed our way. And you are going to hear some of those conversations! KBIS, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, in partnership with the National Kitchen and Bath Association is one of the few “must attend” shows. The event itself is 3 days of brands, talks, programming, events and happenings while combined with the International Builders Show in the same footprint of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Every first-time attendee to the show is gobsmacked by the sheer volume of people and product. Even those who are veterans of the event seem annually surprised by the amount of walking, talking and lack of physical preparedness required to fully navigate this show. KBIS is on my list of annual must-attend events for specifiers, designers, architects and design-build firms. Why? There are a few reasons for this and following is a comprehensive, possibly incomplete, but significant nonetheless. Networking - If there is someone in the industry that you are hoping to meet, there is a very good chance that they are at KBIS. Even if they aren't, you will certainly meet others with whom you can find strategic opportunities. The event itself is optimally conducive to unplanned “run ins”, scheduled meetings and introductions. Surprise and Delight - Finding new products, materials and services are what makes the idea of a trade show so enticing. You don't know what you don't know and an event of this size makes the process of discovery fun and effective. The amount of product interaction over 3 days in over 1 million square feet of convention space is certainly an opportunity to find new products to incorporate into your designs. Learning and Education - The amount of programming that takes place over these three days is significant. There are opportunities to learn a great deal about a vast number of topics in a short period of time making this one of those rare opportunities that matches your preparedness and willingness to learn equal to the number of opportunities available. In other words, there are more available to you than you could possibly attend. We explore what's cooking at this year's KBIS. John shares what SKS is most excited about, the can't-miss products from the brand, and even reveals which SKS products he has in his own home. Plus, we dive into the future of SKS, discuss creative design installations, and get John's take on the latest trends in kitchen innovation. Topics discussed include; The SKS advantage What is a Technicurean Advantages to cooking with modern appliances Product design How SKS supports the design community through opportunity and education Benefits of a national service team Technological approach to cooking

Heather Brooks, CAPS, SRES, is an aging specialist and community educator focused on helping older adults age in the right place. She shares her ‘secret sauce' for aging well in community—including universal design, age friendly home modifications, respite care, age-tech, and access to crucial social determinants of health. About Heather Heather Brooks is the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) Housing Committee Chair and Founding Chapter Chair for NAIPC in SE Florida. She has spent nearly three decades in real estate, specializing in helping seniors "Modify or Move." She is Certified Aging In-Place Specialist (CAPS)Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) and Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) and SFR® certifications National Association of Home Builders National Association of Home Builders. Heather is the founder of "How 2 Age Your Way" and "Step Up Housing", connecting communities and promoting affordable housing for seniors. She is actively involved in NAIPC and SE Florida's founding chapter chair. She has been featured on top podcasts like the NKBA Webinar Series, spoken at the International Builders Show and advocate for aging in place through education and neighborhood initiatives. Key Takeaways The nation's housing infrastructure is insufficient to support the aging population. The average home is 44 years old and less than 5% of our nation's housing units can accommodate individuals with mobility issues. Sixty percent of falls happen at home, and one in four adults report taking a fall. Key aging in place features include step free entries and access to a bedroom and full bathroom on the 1st floor. Important home modifications include installing grab bars, non-slip flooring surfaces, improved lighting, multi-level countertops and replacing doorknobs with lever handles. Universal design goes beyond ADA requirements to design environments that are accessible and usable by all ages and all abilities, whether you have a wheelchair or a stroller. Age-friendly communities are huge drivers of aging well. They encompass more than the home you live in. Social determinants of health like access to transportation, medical care and connections to family and friends are crucial for healthy longevity. There are 4,130 licensed adult day centers in the US servicing 237,000 people daily. The industry is experiencing huge growth as families recognize the importance of taking breaks from caregiving. Adult daycare combats caregiver burnout and is significantly less expensive than homecare.

So what's the lesson I want you to take away from the International Builders Show? The lesson is:There is so much out there. The world is bursting with brilliant, beautiful, unique ideas. But you're not going to find the extraordinary just sitting on a shelf in ordinary places. Treasures are usually hidden. To find a buried treasure there are maps that need following and digging to be done … but you can.As it is with your home, so it is with your life.It doesn't cost you anything to think big thoughts and dream big dreams. Nothing good ever came of dismissing your true desires. You don't necessarily have to act on them, but hear them out. Certainly don't dismiss them just because they may be inconvenient. Extraordinary is never convenient.Don't settle. Do the work. When my father was teaching me to shoot he used the old adage, “Aim small. Miss small.”It means that hitting a target dead center is difficult. Failure is likely. So aim as tightly as you can on the the most specific target possible, and when you do miss it, it's likely still a pretty good shot. Aim small. Miss small. And when you fail, don't stop. Do all you can to learn from failure, but don't let it stop you from taking the next shot. Otherwise what's the point of learning? Taking the next shot is the point.Doing something out of the ordinary, something extraordinary, something out of the box, is unusual because climbing out of the box takes work. But if you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary. As T. S. Elliot once put it, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.”As the Great One, Wayne Gretzky once put it, “100 percent of the shots you don't take, don't go in.”Risk is unavoidable. Failures are certain. But if you don't risk making your own mistakes you'll spend your life taking orders from someone who does.I'm here today to encourage you to not simply accept what's been handed to you but to design the life you really want. Dream the dream. Do the work. Aim for something extraordinary. Take the risk. Things will not end up exactly as you imagined. Things never do. But if you try, take the risk, dare to fail, things always end up more extraordinary than if you never set sail at all.A ship is safe in the harbor, but that's not what ships are for.So set sail. Aim small. Miss small. Fail forward. Then pick yourself up and get right back to building yourself a beautiful life.
The newest kitchen and bath ideas are always introduced at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show that was combined with the International Builders Show which was held in Las Vegas. The combined attendance for both shows was over 117,000 people who viewed more than 2,400 exhibits and walked 678,000 square feet. Whew! That is a lot of walking. Jason Miller, current president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association's Arizona North Chapter, is back with us to talk about the new trends and ideas that impressed him and will most likely be available in 2024. Sustainability from many of the manufacturers seemed to be the common theme at the show. Jason talks about the sustainable methods from some of the manufactures and what we can expect in that forum. Natural, warmer, calming colors seems to be prevalent in many of the booths but appliances and plumbing fixtures introduced their colorful items to add to the softer color palettes. Jason also described cabinet ideas for kitchens and bathrooms and new applications for countertop materials. Listen for more innovative, unique and fun ideas for your home. In life, we come across people who change us. Some in small bits, some larger but they, in some way shape our journey and inform who we become. Two of those individuals in my life left us last week. What I find so interesting about it is that these two individuals and i interacted for about one hour each yet they had an immense impact on my life. That led me to think about you, those who listen to the show, this podcast and it reminded me that is the reason that I do this, in the hopes that what I do could impact others, that it could have a lasting impact on your life and shape your journey. You might be wondering about who these people were. One was actor Tom SIzemore who you might recognize from Heat, Saving Private Ryan and countless others. The second was Wayne Shorter, legendary jazz musician. I interviewed both of these icons and each had a sizable impact on me and inform the way I think about things. Wayne Shorter told me a story about how he envisioned his music as a journey, bigger than an instrument playing notes with a band for fans. An actual journey of life, this became a philosophy for him and his story made me think about the journey we all take, the work we create and how that composition changes us. Tom Sizemore left an indelible mark on me. He told a story about being saved by a friend. That reminded me that none of us get to impact points along that journey without others along the way. So, a journey is nothing without the people along the way. Just wanted to share that and remember 2 people who made a tremendous impact on me in a very short amount of time. I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with a colorful conversation for this year's International Builders Show in Las Vegas. Nothing changes the nature and language of design more than color, right? While I can't see you, many are nodding, others are shaking their heads because we in the industry can rarely agree on anything like this and that is just a small part of what makes the current state of design so amazing and wonderful. We shouldn't be agreeing about anything related to design or color. The moment we all begin to love something and think it permanent, we lose finding what's next and I hope that never happens. I also think that very cycle is what transitions design thought leadership and trending ideas to the trendy, which I believe is when creative ideas die. The following is a conversation I had with Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin Williams. We were talking about color and the opportunities designers and specifiers have with Sherwin Williams family of products. We'll get to that, right after this. Thank you, Sue. Loved our chat and I'm looking forward to doing this again soon. Thank you Convo By Design sponsors, ThermaSol, Moya Living and Design Hardware for your partnership. I appreciate you and I love the way you support the design industry. For those listening who want to learn more, please check the show notes for links. Thank you for listening to the show. This week, I have the privilege of conversing with Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) which is a dynamic network of more than 96,000 architects and design professionals throughout 200 chapters committed to enhancing the built environment.
