'You Talkin' to Me?’ Film Podcast

James and Dan had never seen John Schlesinger's Oscar-winning classic Midnight Cowboy, so they watched it together and recorded a podcast about it. In this episode, they explore Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight's unforgettable performances, the film's groundbreaking approach to taboo themes in late 1960s cinema, and its gritty portrayal of loneliness, friendship, and survival in a decaying New York. “I'm walkin' here!” — and so are they.Throughout this discussion, we use terms like ‘male prostitution' or ‘prostitute,' as they relate to the language that reflects the film's era and framing, as well as the term ‘sex worker' which is the preferred modern term.Stay Connected:Twitter: @talkinfilmTikTok: @talkin_filmFacebook: You Talkin' to Me? John Schlesinger's Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) is a deeply personal work, presaging New Hollywood while making something neither New Hollywood or the British New Wave would dare. We meet a middle-aged doctor, Daniel, and a 30 something divorced woman, Alex, who are both dating Bob, a young artist who makes them both feel alive even if he's a self-centered jerk most of the time. Like the average non-Lubitsch film about polyamory, this relationship is obviously doomed, but the exploration of Daniel and Alex's emotional journey in their final week with Bob is exquisite. Plus, we get to meet some of the most wonderfully precocious we've ever seen in a Criterion picture.

With a whip smart script by Steven Zaillian (his first-ever produced) and revelatory performances from Hutton and Penn, THE FALCON AND SNOWMAN received decent reviews upon release, but was only a muted box office success. I was thinking a lot about thrillers that I watched as a kid and how many of them stayed with me longer than more kid-friendly genres. It is probably because I found them confusing and it forced my kid-brain to work twice as hard trying to figure them out. On this week's episode, I wanted to look at some of these thrillers from the 70s and 80s that stuck with me after seeing them on cable TV. They were so evocative that years later I would purposefully seek them out to fill in the blanks.First up, we have "The Conversation" from 1974, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This thriller stars Gene Hackman as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who becomes paranoid after recording a mysterious conversation. Coppola wrote the script in the mid-1960s but couldn't get it made until after the success of "The Godfather"? So her directed it between that film and its sequel. Worth it alone for the sound design, it is groundbreaking, earning Walter Murch an Academy Award nomination.Next is "Marathon Man" from 1976, directed by John Schlesinger. This film features Dustin Hoffman as a graduate student who gets caught up in a conspiracy involving a former Nazi war criminal, played by Laurence Olivier. One of the most famous scenes involves Olivier's character using dental torture. It is not fun. Moving on, we have "Blow Out" from 1981, directed by Brian De Palma. This neo-noir thriller stars John Travolta as a sound effects technician who accidentally records evidence of a political assassination. De Palma was inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow-Up" (1966) and the real-life Chappaquiddick incident. Like “The Conversation,” the film's complex sound design plays a crucial role in the storytelling, making it a tremendous audio-visual experience. Finally, we have "Body Heat" from 1981, directed by Lawrence Kasdan. This steamy thriller features William Hurt and Kathleen Turner in a story of lust, deception, and murder. Turner's amazing performance as the femme fatale made her an instant star. The film was heavily influenced by classic film noir, particularly "Double Indemnity," and it brought the noir genre into the modern era with its explicit content and stylish direction. That's it for this episode of the Video Store Podcast. I hope you enjoy these picks as much as I do. Each of these films offers something unique, whether it's groundbreaking sound design, gripping suspense, or unforgettable performances. Until next time I see you in the shop, remember, be kind rewind.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. On our 80th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends what better way to follow up a Road House podcast than by looking at the highlights of pioneering gay director John Schlesinger? We're talking about 1969's Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban and Barnard Hughes as well as 1971's Sunday, Bloody Sunday starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson, Murry Head and Dame Peggy Ashcroft topped off with 1975's The Day of the Locust starring William Atherton, Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Bo Hopkins, Pepe Serna, Geraldine Paige, Richard Dysart, Lil' Jackie Earl Haley, an even littler Billy Barty and Mrs. Lovey Howell, herself, Natalie Schaeffer.  I'm joined this week by the reliably ab-fab crew of my kid-sister and lit major Roseanne Caputi as well as the sensitive cowhand himself, actor, photographer and snappy patter producer par excellence Gordon Alex Robertson!  Okay, before we don the fringed suede jackets and find a spot on 43rd St., the synopses:  In Midnight Cowboy big, dumb Texan Joe Buck quits his job as a dishwasher and hops on a Greyhound to the big town, New York City with dreams of making his fortune as a male prostitute servicing rich, bored housewives on Park Avenue. After a series of cringe-inducing misfires, Joe finds himself penniless and living in a squalid, condemned apartment with a sickly, limping con man named Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo. With Ratso serving as Joe's manager the only place they can go is straight down. Barely surviving a New York winter, Joe's fortunes finally start to change for the better until a dying Ratso implores Joe to get him to Florida.  Sunday, Bloody Sunday slowly--ever so slowly-- catalogues the highs and lows of two middle-aged, upper-class Londoners, one man, Dr. Daniel Hirsch, a perennially single doctor and one woman, Alex Greville a divorcee who both find purpose and vitality in a love triangle with Bob Elkin, a young sculptor in his 20's. The three must deal with abrupt change, loss and acceptance when Bob the sculptor moves to America.  The Day of the Locust, based on the 1939 novel by Nathaniel West, follows the course of three, tragic dreamers who came to Hollywood with eyes toward stardom but end up victims of its cold-hearted excess: Tod Hacket, a somewhat idealistic --if a bit rapey set designer from Yale-- who is in love with Fay Greener, a beautiful but talentless day playing actress who refuses to date men that aren't wealthy, and none other than Homer Simpson, a simple, religious and socially awkward accountant who naively takes Fay in to live with him.  Was Mr. Schlesinger an all time great? Or a one hit wonder?  Find out! Watch this podcast on Youtube: https://youtu.be/rVaMo465c8A Follow FF&F on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends

As the oldest film the trio have covered to this point, they each think it holds up spectacularly in numerous ways, such as its frenetic dual portrayals of youthful desire and repressed trauma, its iconic needle drops with Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'," and Dustin Hoffman's inimitable overbite. Aided by myriad anecdotes along the way on the film's production and release, director John Schlesinger's greater filmography, and, as it just so happens, Emilio's freshman year at NYU, the trio follow in the footsteps of Joe Buck and Rico "Ratso" Rizzo (luckily without being forced to yell "I'm walkin' here!") and go where the filmic sun keeps shining through the pouring rain.If you enjoy our podcast, please consider writing us a positive review on your podcast platform of choice. John Schlesinger rendezése, Dustin Hoffman és Jon Voight játéka máig elemzések és dokumentumfilmek tárgya. Vermes Dorka  rendező (Árni, Alba Vulva, Anyák napja) társaságában beszéltünk a filmről.  Milyen filmes közegben érkezett a vásznakra az Éjféli cowboy? Beszélünk arról, mivel érdemelte ki az X besorolást, szóba jön a Hays-kóddal jelzett éra vége, valamint a francia új hullámos ihletésekről is beszélünk. The film reflects an of-the-time fascination with the afterlife of the Nazi regime, and especially those Nazis who escaped to South America. The only movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture with an X rating, “Midnight Cowboy” is one of those movies that once you see it, you never forget it. It broke taboos and made American movies relevant again; it both reflected the changing times and was revolutionary. And it had Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman in the indelible roles of Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo. The late Nancy Buirski's final film, “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy”, masterfully captures the expanding universe of “Midnight Cowboy” and the creative powerhouses who turned James Leo Herlihy's novel into legend.   Producers Simon Kilmurry and Susan Margolin join Ken on the pod to discuss “Midnight Cowboy” director John Schlesinger's vision, his influences and constraints. In what ways did a gay novelist and gay director, and a blacklisted screenwriter, infuse the film with its outsider ethos? Is/is not “Midnight Cowboy” a queer film? And how does the documentary aesthetic invigorate the movie? Simon and Susan also reflect on the legendary career of Nancy Buirski, a creative force whose life and career impacted so many in the documentary field.   “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” is shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film.   Hidden Gems: Simon Kilmurry: “In the Shadow of Beirut” Susan Margolin: “Lovin' Stuff”   Follow: @midnight_cowboy_doc on Instagram and @SKilmurry twitter @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Episode 41: MIDNIGHT COWBOY We've made it into the twenties on our Best Picture countdown and get to chew over John Schlesinger's polarizing 1969 drama Midnight Cowboy. This is our third episode on a Dustin Hoffman film, following Rain Man and Kramer vs. Kramer. Hoffman plays Ratso Rizzo, a lowlife con man, and Jon Voigt shares the lead as Joe Buck, a naive Texas whose dreams are dashed in the Big Apple. A sordid tale of a couple of men on the lowest rung of society, is it a humanistic masterpiece or just a slog? Turn in to find out our takes on Midnight Cowboy. It ranks at number 29 on our Best Picture Countdown,* so it can't be all bad, right? Join us next week for The Sound of Music, which is pretty much the same movie. Spoiler Alert: We talk about the movie in its entirety, so if you haven't yet seen it, check it out. Or not. That ball is in your court. *What is this list? We explain it in more detail in our Trailer and its Description, but as a high-level answer: we aggregated several different lists that rank the ninety-four winners of the Best Picture Academy Award in a rough attempt to get a consensus. It is not intended to be rigorous or definitive. It's just a framework to guide our journey through cinema history.

We're joined by freelance critic and friend of the show Noel Murray to talk over our responses to that reserved approach in relation to SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY as a product of its era and as a counterpoint to Schlesinger's previous film, MIDNIGHT COWBOY; how this portrayal of a love triangle balances desperation and dignity; and whether this movie actively hates kids, or if the Hodson children serve a greater thematic purpose. Encore! Writer & Director Nancy Buirski discusses with Jan Price her documentary, "Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy," -- available to watch in select theaters! A half-century after its release, Midnight Cowboy remains one of the most original and groundbreaking movies of the modern era. With beguiling performances from Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman as two loners who join forces out of desperation, blacklist survivor Waldo Salt's brilliant screenplay, and John Schlesinger's fearless direction, the 1969 film became the only Xrated film ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its vivid and compassionate depiction of a more realistic, unsanitized New York City and its inhabitants paved the way for a generation's worth of gritty movies with complex characters and adult themes. But this is not a documentary about the making of Midnight Cowboy: it is about the deeply gifted and flawed people behind a dark and difficult masterpiece, New York City in a troubled time of cultural ferment, and the era that made a movie and the movie that made an era. Featuring extensive archival material and compelling new interviews, director Nancy Buirski illuminates how one film captured the essence of a time and a place, reflecting a rapidly changing society with striking clarity. He's a great example of how to handle the responsibility of fatherhood and a shining example to all of you out there who are dealing with becoming a Dad at such an early age.You can catch more of Mark Valley at: https://twitter.com/yesmarkvalleyYou can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday Night 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentslounge#theparentslounge #markvalley #bostonlegal #parenthood #parentingpodcast #jamiekaler #jasongowin #katemulligan #comedians #parentingadvice #funnyparents #hilarious #cohosts #keeneddie #CSI #fathertime #dadlife #standupcomedy #parentinghumorJamie Kaler's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamiekaler/Jason Gowin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasongowin/Kate Mulligan's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/katestmomever/The Parent's Lounge TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentsloungeshow
