In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary. But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to. For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode. Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their two sons. Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with his disciples: “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and {broke} it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). That last meal together was essential to Jesus. He was their pastor and teacher—they were his little flock. Jesus stressed, “I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (v.15). Likewise, Brother Singh desires to be with his little flock to commemorate our Passover meal, for he has a true shepherd's heart. In this notable lesson, our teacher takes us beyond the religious symbolism of a communion service to explain why we need to share this observance together.

Hey friend! Do you find yourself still reeling from the extraordinary changes we've experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!) Today, I'm bringing back one of my favorite episodes from 2022 - the amazing Shauna Niequist ! I brought this conversation back from the archives because I don't know about you, friend, but this book and Shauna's message still feel relevant to what's going on around me right now. I hope you also find value in listening to this one once again with me. In this episode, Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can make us tender, demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives. Our pain doesn't define us; what we do with it does. You truly don't want to miss this one, my friend! Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her latest book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac. Listen in to hear all about: The concept of finding your next self. The importance of taking care of ourselves (and how to cultivate a desire to fight for our health!). How to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted. Favorite quotes: ~~If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone. ~~I need to not listen to the voices that are telling me who to be, I need to get quiet enough to listen to the voice deep inside of me to see what she has to say. ~~We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That's what gives us the courage to make changes. ~~I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself, inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor. ~~I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by. ~~Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what's good even in the face of what's been lost. In this episode I answered this question: Do you have quotes that you frame for inspiration? Even though communion is a sacrament we participate in every month, it can be easy to miss the deep connections from our communion table to the Passover meal and salvation of God's people in Egypt. Just as they were freed from slavery and rescued into a new life of promise, we are “freed from slavery to sin and death,” and invited to recommit to the life of Christ.

You've all heard the romantic stories of when a husband and wife first met. "It was love at first sight!" But is that true? Or were there very practical reasons you got together? Whenever I hear someone speak of a mentor or extra wise friend, I always think about my relationship with Shauna Niequist. We met working together at a summer camp when we were both young, and she then has offered me truth and guidance for more than two decades. Shauna Niequist is a NYT best-selling author of five books: Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, and Present Over Perfect. She lives in New York City with her husband Aaron and their two sons. I wrote about Shauna in Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First. in Chapter 2: Who was there? Shauna was there in one of the most important conversations of my life, when I called her heartbroken in Oklahoma and she answered the phone at exactly the right moment in Chicago. In this episode, we talk about belonging, and magical moments, and books (because we both just love to talk about books). As usual, she left me with several things to ponder after we were done speaking, specifically about what we're actually saying when we share our pain. The bread and wine of the Eucharist actually become what they symbolize and transmit what they contain, the body and blood of Christ, for our transformation. The Mass is both sacrifice and meal at the same time.
The night before Jesus was betrayed and arrested, He demonstrated His mission, His love, and His surrender to the Father's will in a way that we will never forget. 在主耶稣被背叛与被抓的前一夜,他展现出让我们无法忘怀的使命、爱、和对天父旨意的顺服。
1 Corinthians 10:16-17, Revelation 7:9-17 Bread and wine are staple items in diets both around the world and down through time. They each have a core set of ingredients that are constant, yet there are seemingly endless expressions of both that often reflect where they come from. This makes communion not simply the central act of the Church, but a pretty great illustration of it as well.

Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love – part memoir of a journey to six continents in pursuit of delicious and endangered tastes, part investigation of the loss of biodiversity from soil to plate – tells the story of what we are losing, how we are losing it, and the inspiring people and places that are bringing back the foods we love. This week on Eat Your Words, host Cathy Erway is in studio with author Simran Sethi talking how in America today, food often looks and tastes the same, whether at a San Francisco farmers market or at a Midwestern potluck. Shockingly, 95% of the world’s calories now come from only thirty species. Though supermarkets seem to be stocked with endless options, the differences between products are superficial, primarily in flavor and brand. Tune in for an enlightening conversation and learn what it takes to save the tastes that connect us with the world around us.

Jesus washed the dirty feet of his disciples to illustrate the all powerful truth: people don’t care what you know until they know that you care. Jesus broke bread with his disciples to illustrate the necessity of being bruised so that they could be blessed. Jesus drank wine with his disciples to illustrate the Superior power of his blood to cleanse our souls from sin and shame.
