When it comes to influencing people to change their behaviour, we tend to use logic. That doesn't work, says behavioural specialist Bri Williams. Humans are emotional creatures: we're lazy, scared and confused, she insists. By lazy, she means we're creatures of habit and therefore behaving in a new way takes effort. We're scared because we don't want to try something different in case it fails. And we're confused, because we don't know where to start. Believing that we're rational is the biggest of the many behavioural myths that Bri outlines in this episode. Numbers have a magnetic effect on people and can anchor their behaviour. Behavioural specialist, Bri Williams discusses a golf study which found that professional golfers tended to take fewer strokes when the same hole was labelled as a par four compared to when it was labelled as a par five. The implications of this research extend beyond golf and into daily business life. It highlights how expectations are framed can significantly influence behaviour. Objective reality may be less important than the subjective perception of difficulty. A Load of BS: The Behavioural Science Podcast with Daniel Ross
Bri Williams is one of the foremost behavioural scientists in Australia. She's obsessed with application rather than theory, and I buy that approach 100%. She majored in accounting and psychology (a rare but actually quite sensible combination), built a corporate career in product design and marketing, the BS switch was flicked in 2008 when she read Dan Ariely's ‘Predictably Irrational'; a book that would change her life.It crystallised why she had been experiencing a nagging irritation throughout her 15 year corporate career. And it started to address questions like why people get frustrated with their colleagues, why campaigns fail and why products flop. She realised ‘we've been doing it wrong'. Our assumptions about why and how to influence behaviour had been wrong. That book inspired Bri to start People Patterns, one of Australia's first consultancies to apply behavioural economics to everyday business and personal effectiveness, to write books on the topic and work with businesses to make their lives easier.Show notesBri's funny hats, visual devices and other beh sci propsHow do I use beh sci in my podcast to get the most out of my guests? The story of my podcast theme tune and the tone it setsBri's background: precision and creativityInfluence of Dan Ariely's writingThe 3 barriers to action: Bri's BS modelMarginal gains and the problems Bri loves solvingWhat the best communicators do? Behaviour specialist Bri Williams from People Patterns joins this week's episode to discuss behaviour change. Bri’s reputation has gained her the title of “The Behaviour Explainer”, as she specialises in working with clients to maximise interaction using behavioural economics. People Patterns is one of Australia’s first consultancies to apply behavioural economics to everyday business and personal effectiveness. Primarily, Bri identifies how to get people to do what you want them to do. This not only helps overcome resistance, but also makes business less frustrating and projects better results. Her expertise lies in the knowledge of making or breaking habits, influencing internal stakeholders and investors and delivering better conversion from sales and marketing activities. With an extensive background in finance, accounting, HR and product management, Bri has recognised a through line in all of these fields: psychology. However usually, this dimension is overlooked. She claims that at the core of every challenge we face in business is changing someone’s behaviour from what they are currently doing, to what you want them to do. This lens brings human resistance to the fore so you can easily identify the issue, and how you are going to address it. Bri’s experience lies in the best and most efficient way to accomplish this.

My special guest in this episode is Bri Williams, an expert in behavioral influence from Melbourne, Australia. Recently, Bri had a brilliant talk at Nudgestock, World’s Leading Festival of Behavioural Science and Creativity organized by Ogilvy, presenting a very practical framework to apply the essence of behavioral science into personal or business struggles.Besides her model we talked about her unusual but comprehensive education on accounting and psychology, her first encounter with behavioral science and how she became aware of difference between intended behavior and natural behavior. Bri Williams has lots of free resources and tools at her web site, as well as books you can buy online (I'd recommend you "22 minutes to a better business" as a practical manual or "Behavioral Economics for Business" for the science savvy).Bri Williams' web sitehttps://www.briwilliams.com.au/Bri Williams' presentation at Nudgestockhttps://youtu.be/OzukCBhxSZ8Bri's Trianglehttps://www.briwilliams.com.au/Bris-TriangleBookstorehttps://www.blurb.com/user/PeoplePat?filter=bookstore

Is it good or bad? 25:11 - What's the idea behind behavioral economics Key Takeaways: “I agree the good, better, best is a really appropriate sort of structure to work on the cues. Like this is the bestseller or this is what most other people buy. The use of social proofing and social norms to perhaps suggest to people what the preferred option should be. When in doubt, people tend to do what other people do. So signal that to them.” - Bri Williams “And this is what happens throughout our decision-making. We're playing tennis all the time. When there's nothing at stake to lose, we're going to be more aggressive. We're going to be more open to risk. But as soon as those stakes have changed, then we're going to withdraw a little. So as a business, we want people to feel very confident that if they take the desired action, it's going to be okay.” - Bri Williams “We're endeavoring any way to try and get people to do things. Unfortunately, people's lack of understanding of behavioral science or behavioral economics means that they're doing it based on this assumption that people do make decisions rationally when in fact we don't.” - Bri Williams “Always think of price in context. So oftentimes we think of price as a number when in actual fact the person receiving that price, it's going to be receiving it in a whole range of contexts. And so it's your opportunity and in fact, your responsibility as a business to set that context.” - Bri Williams People / Resources Mentioned: Daniel Kahneman Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman Behavioral Economics for Business by Bri Williams The Little Book of Pricing and Payment by Bri Williams Connect With Bri Williams: BriWilliams.com.au LinkedIn Connect with Mark Stiving: Email: mark@impactpricing.com LinkedIn Twitter

How do you convert people to paid? In this episode of Ask Christina 1st, we go through 7 steps that will help you convert people from free to paid. Digging up an article written by Bri Williams, Christina shares both her ideas and Bri’s ideas. One of the first steps is to offer people a free service that they will eventually have to pay for. 3 months is the perfect time frame as it will give you and your clients time to prepare for a service and or product that people are now paying for. Embed a reward system that your future clients can appreciate that will allow them to still feel like your service or products are worth both their time and more importantly their money. Rewarding people for their loyalty gives them the opportunity to see how much you are also invested in them and what they bring you and your business. Exclusivity also holds value however, that should not be the focus or your bottom line unless you are a luxury product. Offer your clients products and services that are different from what you offered them before. Going from free to paid requires an upgrade in services offered. The key to this is differentiating your products so that your clients feel as though their now paid products or services hold more value than what they were receiving for free.In this episode you will learn:1. How to convert people from free to paid.2. Why differentiating your products is a great way to uphold their new investment.3. How to reward your clients for their loyalty.

Bri Williams is an Australian pioneer in the application of behavioral sciences. She was an early follower of Dan Ariely, BJ Fogg and Richard Thaler, but soon believed the business community needed something more than a framework: they needed tools. She founded PeoplePatterns to turn the esoteric philosophies of behavioral science into practical applications for business leaders. In our discussion with Bri, we discussed her model that uniquely focuses on three key elements for removing barriers to behavior change: apathy, paralysis and anxiety. We talked about priming and Lou Carbone's work on the origami of toilet paper along with Bri's incredible observations of nudges in the world. Bri's most recent book, "Behavioural Economics for Business," was highlighted and, of course, we went down some rabbit holes! In our musical discussion, we touched on one of Kurt's favorite bands (a secret you must listen for), as well as a classical guitar busker in Sydney named Santos Bocelli. (Love that street music vibe!) In our grooving session, Tim mentioned an emerging EDM artist, Pauline Herr. Her fresh and melodic approach is thoroughly engaging. We hope you enjoy the discussion with Bri and please share this episode with a friend. It goes a long way in expanding the community of behavioral science nerds! Behavioral Grooves
We spend a lot of time and money on perfecting our brand and message, but do we really understand the minds of our audience? Bri Williams told us a few home truths this week about just how much businesses are missing out on because of a lack of understanding of behavioural economics. Bri has broken it down into a simple three-part process that anyone can apply across pretty much any area of their business. She has written a critically acclaimed book on the matter, but she was kind enough to share the simple outline of her system with us, as well as some of the following tips: ** Understand how environment can shape somebody’s behaviour. The decisions they make are often swayed by superficial things in the environment, irrespective of the ‘logic’ you may have outlined with your product/service. ** To make behavioural economics work for you, you need to think beyond the end goal of what you want your audience to do. The key is understanding how they can get from the point of not taking action to the end point of taking action. ** When someone’s potential effort is greater than their potential reward, they won’t take action. ** Make your calls to action stand out from the rest of your design. Slick design should not be prioritised over the prominence of calls to action. ** Consider using testimonials higher up your website. To build trust from the beginning is fundamental to the decision your audience makes at the end. ** Understand the power of ‘tension’ in your marketing message. Positive tension, i.e. “only two tickets left” will encourage action. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** The three central elements of behavioural economics ** The Say V Do gap ** “Button anxiety” ** How to create social proof ** The “now me” and “future me” Resources mentioned in this episode: ** Bri’s website: http://www.briwilliams.com.au ** Bri’s book “Behavioural Economics For Business”: http://www.briwilliams.com.au/be-for-business ** Facebook: facebook.com/businessbrainfood ** Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood ** Twitter: https://twitter.com/bfewtrell ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes ** ActionCOACH: http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher Bri summed it up perfectly: “if you’ve ever had a day where you’re bashing your head against a brick wall saying ‘I don’t get it, I don’t know why people don’t do what they say they do and I don’t know why my customers aren’t buying,’ then you need behavioural economics” Also, if you are enjoying these Business Brain Food podcasts, then make sure to share them via social media sites or email the links to family and friends. A lot of time and effort goes into producing each of these podcasts with the goal in mind of the more people we can inspire about business the better. You can help us do just that! Until next time, have a profitable day. Cheers, Ben Fewtrell (02) 9111 5000
