Today's guest is Joanna Oakey. Joanna has more than 20 years of experience helping small businesses grow and maximise their value. She's the host of popular business podcasts The Deal Room and Talking Law, and the author of the new book Buy, Grow, Exit, which steps business owners through the three critical phases of business - acquisition, growth, and winding up. If you want to avoid mistakes that deplete the value of your business and grow your business with an end game in mind, Joanna has some great advice.
In this episode of The Deal Room Podcast, we speak with Mark Gardiner from our very own Aspect Legal. Mark, along with our host Joanna Oakey, talk with us about what we should be considering when entering into a new lease. Now, this was an episode that we featured on our sister podcast Talking Law, however, we thought it was great for The Deal Room too because all of the considerations when entering into a new lease are exactly the sorts of considerations that a buyer should be thinking when doing their due diligence. And of course, anything that a buyer should be thinking about is exactly what a seller should be thinking about when preparing their business for an exit as well! So this episode is a beauty if you're a buyer of the business, it's also a beauty if you're a seller of a business, and you want to know what to think about in terms of preparation of your lease for a future exit. Enjoy!
In this episode of Talking Law, we have an episode for you that comes from our sister podcast, The Deal Room. This is actually part three of a three-part series with Matt Alderton from BX Networking. We decided to play this episode on Talking Law because it provides such great insights for business owners on Matt's learnings on buying, starting, growing and exiting from 6 businesses - which ended in the sale of his last business for $16m to a listed entity. It also provides great insight into a topic that is not discussed anywhere near as often as it should be - the importance of failure, how to protect yourself from failure, and how to view failure in a business. We also have a rapid-fire question session with him, where we compare owning a franchise to other types of businesses, the best approach to employee retention, ways to maximise value in a business, and so much more. This week Sally Penni MBE is Talking Law with Leroy Logan. Leroy was a highly-decorated Superintendent with the Metropolitan Police – a career that culminated with his work on the Olympic Security Team overseeing the London 2012 games. He also started the Black Police Association, an organisation which he chaired for over 30 years. Leroy reveals how Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen came to make a BBC TV drama about his life as a police officer, and how Leroy even helped with scripting the show. Leroy also reflects on his life-long career with the police and the positive influence his parents had on his life. Now, Leroy's next ambition is to become a children's author. Currently less than 5% of children's books are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds and even fewer are from a male perspective so Leroy intends to offer an alternative discourse in children's literature.
