In this first of our new weekly RunAlive Intervals, listen to this excerpt of our conversation with Beth Potter, where she shares her story of getting into triathlon as a novice, why she did it and what she's learnt. What it was like training with the Brownlees as she was just taking up the sport and how she had to draw on her self belief and turn her negative thoughts into positive ones. We hear how she took learnings from her time as a physics teacher, and how now, looking back, she gives the same advice to her training partners.Follow us on social media:You can drop us a DM, send us a picture or tag us on instagram, linkedin or twitter or send us an email: hello@runalive.co.ukThis season of the podcast is sponsored by Run Unbound Endurance Coaching. It gives me great pleasure to observe the success of Yorkshire triathletes, especially when I've watched them from a young age, and then see them progress to the international stage. First, it was the Brownlees, then Jess Learmonth, and now this week's podcast guest Dominic Coy. Dominic started out as a junior member of my own club Leeds Bradford Tri and progressed up to the Yorkshire Academy. After leaving school he went to University in Cardiff and is part of the triathlon squad, training there with Coach Luke Watson. Just a few short weeks ago Dom represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in both the individual race and the team relay where he won a gold medal with his 3 teammates including Non Stanford. Dom clearly has a bright future so it's a great pleasure to chat with him today as we cover: The benefits of being a triathlete in Leeds Moving to Wales Typical training schedule Commonwealth Games Can he make it on the big stage? If you'd like to follow the adventures of Dom Coy please go to: Instagram - dom.c113 Twitter @DomCoy02 Dominic also recommended a couple of books: Range : Why generalists triumph in a world of specialists by David Epstein Around the world in 80 days - Mark Beaumont To download your FREE 4-week mobility plan, please click here. We interview local lad James Scott Farrington who lead the field home at the recent UK 70.3 event in Bolton. We discuss training with the Brownlees, going from a non-swimmer to leading out of the water and what the future holds now he has a pro licence.
Beth Potter left her life as an Olympic runner and a teacher to move to Leeds, train with the Brownlees and become a world-class triathlete. Bouncing back from self doubt in Hamburg, 2020 finished well with a World Cup gold and silver. More recently, the Scot scored hit the headlines with a 5,000m World Record time of 14.41 and now has the famous five rings in her sights once more.
This week we were very lucky to have a chat with Simon Ward. Simon is one of the top coaches in the UK although he would hesitate to call himself a Triathlon coach nowadays. More a life coach with a specialism in Triathlon. We talked to Simon about what it is he think's he's done to be named 220 Triathlon Magazine Coach of the Year a whopping 6 times! As well as his concept of a physical pension, thoughts on the PTO and Ironman, creating the programme that discovered the Brownlees and how we could all do with a different perspective on what being physically active actually is. We were very lucky to have Simon on the show and if you want to know more about him then you can find him at the following; Website www.simonward.co.uk & www.TheTriathlonCoach.com Podcast - https://simonward.podbean.com Facebook Group - The Triathlon Coach Cafe And as always you can find us at; Ben - www.ThisMessyHappy.com & https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnnOksyxFnRBGHK1ZyLRJGA Ben's Insta - @thismessyhappy Sam's Insta - @beggsam George's Insta - @george_steele_
This week we were lucky enough to chat to professional triathlete Tom Davis fresh from his awesome performance and 12th place finish at the PTO/Challenge backed Daytona middle distance triathlon. It was an absolutely stellar field including both Brownlees, Javi Gomez, Lionel Sanders, Identikits, Schoeman, Luis and that's only just scratching the surface. So what was it like to finds himself in 1st place at one stage? We also got Tom's opinion on hoe the PTO are doing it differently for our pro's, his love of middle distance racing and his future goals in the sport. What a legend. Thoroughly nice guy and we wish him all of the luck in the work. It's definitely a bright future ahead for Tom!
An interview with Elite athlete - David Hauss It's been a few weeks since we recorded. But this show's guest is a world class athlete. David Hauss finished 4th at the 2012 London Olympics in the triathlon, narrowly missing out on a medal to Gomez and the Brownlees. Now, 8 years on, David is focused on a future in ultrarunning and has some BIG race targets. Hailing from the island of Reunion, David has an eye on winning the Diagonale des Fous after a successful first tilt where he came 6th in 2019. In this show David tells us: - How he got into triathlon - The decision by the French federation which led him to look to nature for his exercise kicks after being left out of the Rio 2016 team - How he has journeyed into ultras via a couple of very good results in Reunion - What races he has ambitions for - And whether an Olympic medal or winning Diagonale would be bigger for him And you may be surprised at the answer to that last one. This interview is the last in our Compressport series. We are grateful to Compressport for the support. Please like, share and subscribe if you enjoy the show. And if you want to connect with us you can get Paul at his handle @pyllon on most social media outlets. James is @james_stewart13 on Twitter.
056: Malcolm Brown on a career in coaching and lessons from the Brownlees This episode's guest is Malcolm Brown a Performance Coach based at the Leeds Triathlon Centre where he has partnered with Jack Maitland in coaching the Brownlee Brothers, that's Alastair and Jonny – two of the greatest triathlon racers of all time. He was previously the head endurance coach for UK Athletics, coaching athletes to international gold medals at Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic level Malcolm has journeyed through what would be considered one of the most traditional routes for a coach, being a PE teacher by trade, coaching in his spare time almost always on a volunteer basis and then as the system in the UK developed he began to coach professionally, first for athletics, then later in triathlon In this interview, Malcolm reflects over the long arc of his career and draws on the lessons that have kept him so stable, cogent and wise. Malcolm tells it like it is about the state of coaching and how it has been underinvested in, how it lacks the recognition and prominence that it deserves but ardently hopes for better and is active in creating that future for coaching. He's supposed to be retired, but he's still extremely active in the coaching community, having established the Leeds triathlon centre and recently the Endurance think tank. We start the conversation with a recent health scare for Malcolm, which it sounds as though many of his athletes ‘coached' him through. Show notes: Club Le Santa, Lanzarote and a heart attack How Malcolm occupied his mind when recuperating Context to Malcolm's 42 year coaching career Paternal role model, interest in multiple sports, Head down and Head up perspectives from academics Malcolm's athletic career and the insights provided by his own injuries! Finding the right words at the right time to support the athlete Working with Alistair and Jonny Brownlee and picking up body language indicators in order to adapt sessions clip Malcolm didn't want coaching to be his job, he enjoyed his independence and autonomy too much!! The common language of a team Coach with significant input from the athletes led the training environment Coach development roles, skills and competencies The benefits of the endurance think tank Malcolm's observations around successful junior athletes not progressing to being successful senior athletes and the reasons he identified The resourcefulness of the Brownlee brother's and the necessity for them to make their own decisions as they are the athlete How has Malcolm's input changed with the Brownlees over time Physiological efficiency Malcolm's nuggets of wisdom Fail better! Since 2004 my guest today, Jack Maitland, has been focussed on helping the cream of British Triathlon talent to perform on a world stage. During that time athletes in his care (The Brownlees, Non Stanford, Vicky Holland, Jessica Learmonth, Gordon Benson and more) have won Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, occupied 5/6 places on the GB Olympic triathlon team, won multiple world, commonwealth and European titles, and generally put the Leeds Triathlon performance centre on the map as one of the world’s leading triathlon training locations. In 2017 Jack left his role to start working closely with Kirsten Steffenson, his partner and our other guest on today’s show. Their new venture, Sports Ashram, combines their passion for Yoga with Jack’s triathlon skills to provide a different approach to training and preparing for endurance events. In this conversation you will discover: Mobility, flexibility and strength - how a weekly yoga practice can enhance all 3 Why balance in your life will enhance athletic performance How mindfulness learned through yoga can be transferred into your triathlon training sessions Why yoga is a practice, not a performance The positive benefits for your sleep patterns which come from even 10 minutes of daily meditation Why recovery and rest must occupy the same priority in your weekly schedule as training How to improve your Heart Rate Variability through meditation and breathing Find out more about Jack and Kirsten here on Facebook The Sports Ashram Jack mentioned Dr. Alan Watkins and Complete Coherence - see the video HERE which explains this Dr Alan Watkins - How to be brilliant every single day The influence of Yoga on heart rate variability Yoga and heart rate variability - a comprehensive review of the literature To listen to Simon and Jack's earlier podcast https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-and-jack-maitland/ To find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. He's the former Exeter University student who is also the European Age Group Triathlon Champion. And, still in his mid-20s, Jack is determined to make sure gay sportspeople get the representation they deserve. Devenport used to be one of the must do races in Australia – Macca infamously got banned from this race…….back in the day! The experts then cast their eyes over the upcoming events, notably IM Melbourne and Abu Dhabi. Will Crowie win Melbourne, can Supermodel finish the race?
