By Far The Greatest Team Football Podcast

In the latest episode of *By Far The Greatest Team*, hosts Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney take us on a journey back to the early 20th century, where they dissect Great Britain's double gold medal triumphs in the 1908 and 1912 Olympic Games. As always, their conversation is a delightful blend of historical insight and light-hearted banter. They start by discussing the broader history of football in the Olympics, touching on the complexities of Great Britain's representation in the Games. Graham and Jamie also reminisce about the nostalgic TV show *Going for Gold*, with its iconic theme song composed by none other than Hans Zimmer, and share some fun facts about defunct Olympic sports like tug-of-war and hot air ballooning. The core of the episode focuses on the GB Olympic football team, which dominated the 1908 and 1912 tournaments. The hosts explore the controversies surrounding these events, including the walkovers in 1908 and the competitive spirit of the 1912 final against Denmark, where GB secured a 4-2 victory. They delve into how these triumphs have been overshadowed in history, despite the team's pioneering role in Olympic football. The episode wraps up with a thoughtful discussion on the place of football in the Olympic Games, reflecting on how these early successes set the stage for future generations. Tune in for an insightful and entertaining deep dive into a lesser-known chapter of football history. If you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!Or visit our website at www.thegreatestteam.co

He is in Paris currently, and by the time this is out may have bagged a hatful more medals. Ahead of Duncan taking to the pool in Paris, we caught up to speak about the habits that have taken him to the top of his sport. From accountability to boundaries and avoiding too much digital distraction, as well as switching off through connection and comedy, Duncan shares so many valuable life lessons. The Paris Olympics start this week, and I have clear memories dating back to the first one I can remember: Munich 1972.   Every 4 years we witness amazing performances and emotional moments. Hopefully, 2024 in Paris will be the same. For our podcast guest this week it will be a magical moment, when he steps onto the pontoon for the Men's Individual Triathlon next week.   Sam Dickinson is a professional triathlete based in Leeds, and he is one of 5 who have been selected for the GB Olympic triathlon team for the Paris Olympics. He will race in the men's individual event as well as the team relay over the next 2 weeks.   It's a great pleasure to welcome Sam back as he was a guest on this show 6 years ago, almost to the day. If you are interested in listening to the 18 year old Sam, you can listen using the above link. Back then, Sam had just arrived in Leeds to start his journey as a full time triathlete at the Leeds Performance Centre. And since then, Sam has slowly and patiently built his fitness and learned his race craft in the various levels leading to World Triathlon series and the Olympics. This journey has not been without its challenges of injury, illness, and disappointment. But as you will hear from Sam, each of these experiences have been valuable lessons which have helped him to build resilience, and ultimately to achieve what for many athletes is a lifetime goal: To represent their country at the Olympic Games. To find out more about Sam please visit his Instagram Channel samdickotri.   This is the first podcast we recorded back in 2018.   Sam's favourite book is Atomic Habits by James Clear - a book which I can highly recommend as well. Sam says it's “a great book about moulding your environment to help you reach desired outcomes." Clearly it has had a huge influence on Sam's career so far!   For chilling out, Sam likes to listen to 'The Rest is Politics' podcast.   **To get a free copy of my personal daily mobility routine, please click HERE** To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Quillan Isidore is one of my favorite pros. I've followed him on social media to YouTube for years. So when I started my own podcast he was one person I wanted to interview. Meeting someone you admire doesn't always turn out how you want it. But with him I had a blast getting the chance to know him. In this episode we talked about him getting 3rd in round 10 of the World Cup in Argentina. Both weekends in Argentina according to Isidore were his most consistent. He even says it changed his mentality. Isidore had an up and down season with winning races in Tours, France, a couple Euro cups, a British Championship, and injuries. He has a no give up attitude I admire. We touched on his long time friendship with Tre and Kye Whyte, the changing of the guard from coach Marcus Bloomfield to former pro Kyle Evans, and the young guns Ross Cullen to the ever stylish Paddy Sharrock. At the moment Isidore is back in training for the new season and hopefully a place on the GB Olympic team in Paris.

Shining a light on the nature part of the nature, nurture equation is the key to understanding and provides information that can be used to successfully improve outcomes for any individual.   KEY TAKEAWAYS When the environment is the same but people’s outcomes are different the question is what is the other factor? DNA testing highlights the nature part of the nature-nurture equation. It provides another piece of information that can be used by individuals to improve their outcomes. You can use genetic data to help you reach your goals, it will help you to get better quicker. For nutrition genetic data helps with sustained changes in behaviours. People have a specific internal motivation as to ‘why’. They know they are made in a particular way and require particular nutrition. There is self-motivation for making one choice over another. There is a complete spectrum of diets that we are familiar with and individuals will have greatly differing experiences with them. There are 2 macronutrient groups that can be looked at; -Response to saturated fats -Response to refined carbohydrates This layer of ‘why’ and understanding how it is different for each person is important in making a difference. It’s a powerful motivation tool when you understand the impact of your genetics. Circle is the world’s most comprehensive DNA test reporting on 500 different genetic traits across 20 categories. Whole enzyme sequencing looks at every single part of the active or protein-coding part of the human genome.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Healthy lifestyle options are key, it’s about influencing our epigenetics’ ‘I’ve aligned my diet with my genetics’ ‘DNA testing is about shining a light on the nature part of the nature-nurture equation’   VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization  High Performance website DNA Fit website   ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster Angela is a Nutritionist, Health and Performance Coach. It was the biggest win of his ultrarunning career. https://303triathlon.com/boulders-ryan-smith-wins-2019-leadville-100-with-consistent-second-half-pacing/   Endurance News: Last week we spoke about the Tokyo Olympic Test Event and the story of the two brits who were disqualified. We have a little more information on that story and information about a rule change that allowed for that disqualification. Remember when Alistair Brownlee threw is brother Jonathon across the line at the ________. The rule that disqualified this year's Brits was not in place when the Brownlee brothers raced. Follow up to the Womens Olympic test event last week: Learmonth and Taylor-Brown's disqualification meant compatriot Vicky Holland was bumped up to third, with Bermuda's Flora Duffy and Italy's Alice Betto taking first and second respectively. Two other Britons were also in the top ten; Non Stanford in seventh and Sophie Coldwell in ninth. Despite their feel-good ending being ruined, Taylor-Brown and Learmonth will no doubt take comfort in the knowledge they had no chance of qualifying for the GB Olympic team at this race regardless of their placing, due to results earlier this year. Holland was the only British woman eligible to automatically qualify for the Games here, thanks to her bronze medal in Rio, but the shortened distance meant the race lost its Olympic qualification status. Afterwards Holland was sympathetic to Learmonth and Taylor-Brown's situation.   Though the American contingent was strong and deep, boasting five of the world’s top 20-ranked triathletes among the starting field of 65, none finished on the podium and only one, fifth-place finisher Summer Rappaport of Thornton, Colo., clinched a spot for the Tokyo Games with her performance. Under USA Triathlon’s Olympic qualifying rules, as many as two spots were at stake for American women in the competition. But one would have had to finish on the podium in order for the second spot to be available. The U.S. is expected to send three female triathletes to the Tokyo Games, and there will be other opportunities to qualify next spring. Don't Fry Bacon Naked: Know Your Sport's Rules: The rule states that "athletes who finish in a contrived tie situation, where no effort to separate their finish times has been made, will be disqualified".  You might remember British Olympic medallists and brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee's show of sportsmanship at a 2016 World Triathlon Series race in Mexico. Legal at the time, an exhausted Jonny was helped to the line by his brother Alistair, who pushed him ahead at the finish, but an ITU disqualification rule, similar to the one employed [at the trial event], has since been introduced to stop any comparable incident. Speaking of rule changes? Do you remember when Chrissy Wellington had a flat during her second Ironman World Championship and Rebekah Keat tossed her a CO2 cartridge? I was reading Mike Reilly's book "Finding My Voice" and he talks about how the rule that allowed another competitor to provide assistance was changed. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/new-cycling-world-speed-record-neil-campbell-yorkshire-porsche-a9064286.html   Discussion kickoff: Johannes Herrmann 1 week ago How as triathletes can we complain about people drafting or Patrick Lange littering 200 meters before the finish line in Kona - saying people are not upholding the rules - and find it stupid if someone upholds the rules. 1. Those are all pros earning their living with this sport and they should know the rules as every electirician and tax advisor for their particular job. 2. We should challenge the rules as such in order to make triathlon more attractive as a sport. Question which we should try to answer to challenge the existing rule : Would anyone care or even disqualify two athletes crossing the line together and finishing in for example 14th place jointly instead of 14th and 15th? My guess - no one cares. So change the rule!     Upcoming Interviews: Dr. Kirk Parsley, sleep specialist and former Navy SEAL returning to share some new information about the most effective recovery method - sleep.   Closing: Please support our affiliate brands that support the show and help you get faster! Since 2004 my guest today, Jack Maitland, has been focussed on helping the cream of British Triathlon talent to perform on a world stage.  During that time athletes in his care (The Brownlees, Non Stanford, Vicky Holland, Jessica Learmonth, Gordon Benson and more) have won Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, occupied 5/6 places on the GB Olympic triathlon team, won multiple world, commonwealth and European titles, and generally put the Leeds Triathlon performance centre on the map as one of the world’s leading triathlon training locations. In 2017 Jack left his role to start working closely with Kirsten Steffenson, his partner and our other guest on today’s show. Their new venture, Sports Ashram, combines their passion for Yoga with Jack’s triathlon skills to provide a different approach to training and preparing for endurance events. In this conversation you will discover: Mobility, flexibility and strength - how a weekly yoga practice can enhance all 3 Why balance in your life will enhance athletic performance How mindfulness learned through yoga can be transferred into your triathlon training sessions Why yoga is a practice, not a performance The positive benefits for your sleep patterns which come from even 10 minutes of daily meditation Why recovery and rest must occupy the same priority in your weekly schedule as training How to improve your Heart Rate Variability through meditation and breathing Find out more about Jack and Kirsten here on Facebook The Sports Ashram Jack mentioned Dr. Alan Watkins and Complete Coherence - see the video HERE which explains this Dr Alan Watkins - How to be brilliant every single day The influence of Yoga on heart rate variability Yoga and heart rate variability - a comprehensive review of the literature To listen to Simon and Jack's earlier podcast https://simonward.podbean.com/e/simon-ward-and-jack-maitland/ To find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. ONE STEP AHEAD: Chlorine. WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Becoming heat adapted with a hot bath. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEW - VICKY HOLLAND: Vicky Holland is a British triathlete who is part of the GB Olympic set up. At school Vicky was a nationally ranked swimmer before switching to athletics and taking up the 1500 metres. She didn’t start competing in triathlon until her second year at Loughborough University in 2005 when she was approached by British Triathlon. Vicky was selected for the London Olympics in 2012, however due to an unfortunate bike crash placed 26th, but since then she has become a figure head in the world of women’s triathlon. The 2014 Commonwealth Games were a positive turning point as she secured her first major individual medal with a Bronze and bettered that with a Gold in the Mixed Team Relay alongside the Brownlee brothers. Vicky has had a sensational 2015 season proving she is one of the world’s best. She has notched up two individual wins on the ITU circuit, one in Cape Town and one recently in Edmonton. Along with these impressive wins she has consistently achieved podium finishes throughout the season with a crucial 3rd at the Grand Final in Chicago, which has secured her place at the Rio Olympics. GEEK OUT: This week our geeky contributors ‘Plews and Prof’ talk to us about Dr. Jeff Volek’s ‘FASTER’ study. Jeff S. Volek, Ph.D., R.D., is a registered dietitian and Professor at the Department of Human Sciences, Ohio State University. His study is aimed at discovering the role diet plays in how our bodies metabolize fat vs. carbohydrate during exercise. The geeks talk to us about some of the exciting new data coming back from this study for fat adapted endurance athletes. 5 MIN FOCUS: Electrostimulation. This week Bevan talks to Ryan Heaney, President of Marc Pro. The Marc Pro is a device intended for muscle conditioning by stimulating muscle in order to improve or facilitate muscle performance. For athletes this is great news - faster recovery times, maximising the results of training, injury prevention and improved conditioning and performance http://marcpro.com/ CONTACT US: Go to http://www.fitter.co.nz to learn more about us.
